과학, 기술, 환경Science, Technology, and Environment
Chapter Objectives
By the end of this chapter, you will be able to:
- Read and interpret Korean texts that explain a scientific finding, a technological development, or an environmental issue, including short reports, explainer articles, and public announcements.
- Use specialized science, technology, and environmental vocabulary accurately, including terms for research, process, mechanism, measurement, and impact.
- Explain a technical process or a cause-and-effect chain clearly and in the correct sequence for a general audience.
- Distinguish an established scientific finding from a preliminary or projected result within a technical text.
- Present a short explanation of a technology or an environmental issue, moving logically from mechanism to consequence.
- Apply the register, argument, density, and mediation judgment consolidated in Chapter 5, and the attribution and balance skills applied to economic and political discourse in Chapter 7, to technical and environmental explanation.
This chapter introduces no new particles, endings, speech levels, honorific systems, counters, or sound changes. It applies systems already active through Chapter 7 to a new domain: science, technology, and environmental discourse. All practice material in this chapter is fictional and general-purpose; no real companies, products, research institutions, or individuals are named or characterized.

|---|---|---|
| 탄소 중립 | carbon neutrality | receptive — specialized environmental term |
| 동료 평가 | peer review | receptive — academic/research term |
| 시제품 | prototype | receptive — technical development term |
| 생분해성 | biodegradability | receptive — specialized materials-science term |
Pronunciation Focus: Loanwords and Technical Compounds
This chapter introduces no new sounds or sound changes. It reviews how already-active loanword pronunciation and Sino-Korean compound stress patterns apply to the frequent technical loanwords and dense compound nouns of this domain, such as 데이터, 시스템, and 에너지.
Long Sino-Korean technical compounds such as 재활용 소재 기술 or 온실가스 배출량 are read as a sequence of smaller meaningful chunks rather than as one unbroken string. Group the compound by its component nouns — for example, 재활용 / 소재 / 기술 — and place a very slight pause at each boundary rather than at random points, so that a listener can track which noun modifies which. Loanwords such as 데이터, 시스템, and 에너지 follow standard Korean syllable-block pronunciation; they are not read with English stress or vowel quality.
Grammar and Patterns: Explaining Process, Mechanism, and Status
This chapter introduces no new particles, endings, speech levels, or honorific systems. It applies structures already active through Chapter 7 — passive forms, causative-adjacent expressions, noun-modifying clauses, nominalization, and attribution — to the specific communicative demands of technical explanation, where sequencing a process correctly and marking the certainty of a finding are essential.
1. Describing mechanism with the passive
Technical explanation frequently describes what happens to a material, substance, or system rather than who acts on it. The already-active passive-form verbs such as -되다 and -지다 let a writer describe a mechanism from the perspective of the process itself.
- 이 소재는 열을 가하면 원래 형태로 되돌아가도록 설계되었다.This material is designed to return to its original shape when heat is applied.passive 설계되다, process-centered description
- 폐플라스틱은 세척과 분쇄 과정을 거쳐 새로운 소재로 재구성된다.Waste plastic is reconstituted into a new material after undergoing washing and grinding.passive 재구성되다, sequenced process
2. Sequencing a process clearly
Already-active sequence and result connectors — -(으)면, -아/어서, -고 나서, and the noun 단계 combined with ordinal reference — let a writer walk a reader through a process step by step without introducing new grammar.
- 먼저 원료를 분류한 다음, 세척 단계를 거쳐 마지막으로 성형 단계로 넘어간다.First the raw material is sorted, then it goes through a washing stage, and finally moves to a shaping stage.explicit stage sequencing
- 온도가 일정 수준 이상으로 올라가면 소재의 구조가 변형되기 시작한다.Once the temperature rises above a certain level, the material's structure begins to change.condition -(으)면 marking a mechanism trigger
3. Marking the certainty status of a finding
Public-facing science writing must distinguish an established finding from a preliminary or projected one. The already-active indirect quotation and evaluative framing patterns from Chapter 7 — -다고 밝히다, -다고 보다, and -(으)ㄹ 것으로 예상되다 — extend naturally to research status.
- 연구진은 이번 실험을 통해 소재의 내구성이 기존 제품보다 높다는 것을 확인했다고 밝혔다.The research team stated that they confirmed, through this experiment, that the material's durability is higher than that of existing products.confirmed finding, attributed to research team
- 다만 대량 생산에 적용했을 때도 같은 결과가 나올지는 추가 연구가 필요한 것으로 보인다.However, it appears that further research is needed to determine whether the same result will hold when applied to mass production.unresolved status marked with 것으로 보이다
4. Noun-modifying clauses identifying cause and effect
As in earlier chapters, noun-modifying clauses, already active since earlier volumes, precisely identify which cause produces which effect within a technical explanation.
- 온실가스 배출을 줄이는 데 기여하는 기술로 주목받고 있다.It is drawing attention as a technology that contributes to reducing greenhouse gas emissions.noun-modifying clause identifying function
- 기존 공정보다 에너지를 덜 사용하는 방식이 이번 연구의 핵심이다.A method that uses less energy than the existing process is the core of this research.noun-modifying clause defining the innovation
Every pattern in this section — passive forms, sequence connectors, indirect quotation, evaluative framing, and noun-modifying clauses — is already active from earlier chapters and volumes. What is new is the discipline of using these familiar structures to keep mechanism, confirmed result, and open question clearly distinct in a single technical passage.
Model Dialogue: Discussing a New Recycling Technology
수아가 동료와 최근 발표된 재활용 소재 기술에 대해 이야기하는 장면 (교육용 예시)
분석 — Analysis: Identify where 수아 describes the mechanism using passive and sequencing patterns, where she states a confirmed result, and where she marks a claim as still requiring further research.
Reading: A Research Summary and an Explainer Passage
Read the following two short texts, written for this course as general-purpose instructional material. No real company, research institution, or individual is named.
Analysis task:
- Identify the sentence in 자료 1 that states a confirmed experimental result, and the sentence that marks what still requires further research.
- Identify the sentence in 자료 2 that presents one expert's projection, and the sentence that presents a more cautious expert view.
- Identify the sentence in 자료 2 that signals the technology's commercial future as unresolved rather than settled.
- Using both texts, explain in one sentence why a careful reader should not treat the lab-scale durability result in 자료 1 as proof that the technology is ready for mass production.
- Write one sentence, following the Building Block pattern above, that summarizes the overall structure of 자료 2 in your own words.
Listening Practice
Ask your instructor, a language partner, or a text-to-speech tool to read the following short science news segment aloud. Listen once for the overall claim, then identify the source of the main claim, the confirmed result, and the point that remains unresolved.
라디오 과학 뉴스 진행자의 짧은 보도 (교육용 예시)
듣기 과제 — Listening task: Listen and answer in English.
| 질문 | 답 |
|---|---|
| What technology is reported, and what process does it involve? | ______ |
| What result was confirmed in the lab experiment? | ______ |
| What does the research team say still needs further verification? | ______ |
Speaking Practice
1단계 — 짝 활동 — Explaining a technology to a colleague
With a partner, one person plays a colleague asking about a recently developed technology (this chapter's recycling material or a similar fictional one you invent). The other explains how it works, what has been confirmed, and what still requires further research, being careful to keep the two clearly distinct.
2단계 — 균형 잡힌 해설 — Presenting two expert perspectives
Role-play a short exchange in which one speaker summarizes an optimistic expert projection and the other summarizes a more cautious expert view, using neutral framing language such as -(으)ㄹ 것으로 전망하다 and 아직 확실하지 않다고 지적하다 rather than endorsing either side.
혼자 하는 연습 — Solo alternative
Record yourself explaining 자료 1 and 자료 2's content aloud in your own words, as if briefing a colleague who has not read the originals. Confirm that you clearly sequence the process, state the confirmed result, and mark any unresolved question as unresolved.
Writing Workshop: A Clear Technical Explanation
Use 자료 1 and 자료 2 above, or a comparable fictional technology or environmental issue of your choosing, to complete the following writing tasks.
체크리스트 — Checklist:
- The mechanism or process is explained clearly and in the correct sequence.
- Confirmed results are stated plainly and distinguished from projections or unresolved questions.
- Every projection or claim is attributed to a specific source using an already-active pattern such as -다고 밝히다 or -것으로 전망하다.
- At least one limitation or open question is explicitly named.
- No real company, research institution, or individual is named or characterized.
- Register remains formal and consistent throughout.
- Spacing, particles, and Hangeul spelling are accurate, with no romanization.
- No structure appears beyond what is active through Volume V, Chapter 8.
Culture and Communication
South Korean science and technology reporting aimed at a general audience commonly distinguishes a laboratory-stage finding from a commercially proven result, and often notes explicitly when further verification or additional research is still needed. Explanatory writing that clearly separates what a research team has confirmed from what remains uncertain is commonly regarded as more credible than writing that presents early-stage findings as finished breakthroughs.
Different research institutions, companies, and media outlets in South Korea may use somewhat different conventions for describing research status, citing sources, and framing environmental claims. The vocabulary and patterns in this chapter reflect general, broadly applicable usage for reading and producing clear technical explanations; learners engaging with a specific institution's or outlet's coverage should remain attentive to that source's own framing choices rather than assuming all sources describe research status identically.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Error: Writing a lab-stage or early result as though it were already commercially proven, such as 이 기술로 문제가 다 해결됐다 stated flatly, when the source text presents this only as a laboratory result that still requires further research.
Correction: State the confirmed result precisely, then explicitly mark what remains unverified, as in 실험실 환경에서는 내구성이 향상된 것으로 확인되었으나, 대량 생산 적용 여부는 추가 연구가 필요하다.
Error: Summarizing a multi-stage technical process as a single vague action, so the reader cannot follow how the mechanism actually works.
Correction: Use already-active sequence connectors and stage vocabulary, as in 먼저 ... 다음 ... 마지막으로, to walk the reader through each stage in order.
Error: Substituting a real company, research institution, or individual's name into a practice sentence or exercise, or attributing a specific real-world finding to a named real source.
Correction: Keep practice material generic, using terms such as 연구진, 전문가들, and 한 연구팀 without naming a real organization or person, consistent with this chapter's fictional practice scenarios.

Answer Key
Reading analysis
- Sample response: The sentence stating the confirmed experimental result is the one describing improved durability confirmed in the lab experiment; the sentence marking what still requires research is the one about applying the technology to mass production.
- Sample response: One expert projection holds that the technology will contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions if commercialized; the more cautious view holds that it is not yet certain whether lab results will hold at mass-production scale.
- Sample response: The sentence stating that commercialization will depend on several more years of additional verification signals an unresolved future.
- Sample response: The lab-scale result in 자료 1 was obtained in a controlled experimental environment, and the text itself states that further research is needed to determine whether the same result holds under mass-production conditions, so it cannot yet be treated as proof of production readiness.
- Sample response: 새로운 재활용 소재 기술은 에너지 사용을 줄인다는 점에서 주목받고 있으나, 대량 생산 환경에서도 같은 효과가 유지될지는 전문가들 사이에서도 확실하지 않다는 지적이 있다.
Listening comprehension
- Sample response: A technology that reconstitutes waste plastic into a new, more durable material through sorting, washing, and reconstitution.
- Sample response: In lab experiments, the new material's durability was shown to be improved compared to existing products.
- Sample response: Whether the same result will hold in a mass-production environment still needs further verification.
Section D — Sample explanatory brief (abridged)
한 연구진이 폐플라스틱을 분류, 세척, 재구성하는 단계를 거쳐 내구성이 높은 새로운 소재를 만드는 기술을 개발했다고 밝혔다. 실험실 환경에서는 내구성이 향상된 것으로 확인되었으나, 대량 생산에 적용할 수 있을지는 추가 연구가 필요한 것으로 보인다.
Confirmed results: improved durability confirmed in lab experiments. Projections/unresolved questions: whether the same result will hold in mass production; whether the technology will meaningfully reduce emissions once commercialized.
Section E — Sample discussion
Sample response: A clear technical explanation sequences the mechanism using already-active passive and connector patterns, states the confirmed result plainly, and then explicitly marks any unresolved question using a pattern such as 추가 연구가 필요한 것으로 보인다, without presenting the finding as more settled than the source material supports.
