사상적·문학적 산문Intellectual and Literary Prose

Continuing Volume V, Unit III · Speak and Write Korean: Mastery, Precision, Rhetoric, and Specialized Expression

Chapter Objectives

By the end of this chapter, you will be able to:

  1. Describe the stylistic character of a piece of prose — its tone, rhythm, and diction — using precise Korean stylistic vocabulary.
  2. Identify and interpret figurative language, including metaphor and simile, in a literary-adjacent Korean passage.
  3. Recognize intertextual reference — where one text echoes, responds to, or reworks an idea from another — and describe that relationship in Korean.
  4. Distinguish a literal reading of a passage from an interpretive or symbolic reading, marking each clearly.
  5. Analyze how word choice and sentence rhythm shape a reader's impression of a text.
  6. Write a short interpretive commentary on a fictional literary-adjacent passage, integrating attribution and critique language from Chapter 11.

This chapter introduces two major new productive systems: stylistic and figurative-language description, and intertextual/interpretive commentary. All literary passages in this chapter are original, fictional, general-purpose instructional texts; no real author, title, or published work is quoted, named, or excerpted.

Opening Scenario

  1. You will learn vocabulary and structures for describing style, tone, and diction.
  2. You will learn to identify and interpret metaphor and other figurative language.
  3. You will learn to describe intertextual relationships between texts and ideas.
  4. You will read a short literary-adjacent passage and distinguish literal from symbolic meaning.
  5. You will write a short interpretive commentary on a fictional passage.
단원 진행 — Unit III Progress

Unit III So Far: Research, Ideas, and Literary Language

Chapter 11 established method language, attribution, critique, and synthesis for reading and writing about research. This chapter builds on that analytical stance and turns it toward literary-adjacent prose, where the object of analysis is style and meaning rather than data and method.

ChapterDomainRelationship to Chapter 12
11연구 방법과 비평Established attribution, critique, and synthesis — the analytical stance this chapter now applies to literary reading.
12사상적·문학적 산문Adds stylistic description, figurative-language interpretation, and intertextual commentary.
13역사·문화 텍스트 읽기Will extend interpretive reading to historically and culturally embedded texts.
14고급 학술 에세이Will integrate method, critique, and interpretive commentary into a full academic essay.
15종합 과제 3Unit III synthesis: an integrated analytical and interpretive project.

Today's stylistic and interpretive vocabulary will recur throughout the rest of the unit, especially in Chapter 13's historical and cultural readings.

문법 — Grammar and Sentence Patterns

Grammar and Sentence Patterns: Style, Figuration, and Intertextual Commentary

This chapter introduces two closely related productive systems: (1) stylistic and figurative description — naming a stylistic feature and explaining the effect it creates, and identifying metaphor with 은유 versus simile with 처럼/같이; and (2) intertextual and interpretive commentary — describing how a text evokes or responds to another idea, and distinguishing literal from symbolic reading using 표면적으로는 ~지만 상징적으로는 ~.

1. Describing style: naming a feature and its effect

A stylistic observation names a concrete feature of the text — diction, sentence rhythm, tone — and then states the effect that feature produces on the reader, rather than offering a vague impression alone.

  • 이 글은 짧은 문장을 반복해서 사용함으로써 절제된 문체를 만들어 낸다.This piece creates a restrained style by repeatedly using short sentences.feature (짧은 문장 반복) + 문체를 만들어 내다 (effect)
  • 담담한 어조는 슬픈 사건을 오히려 더 깊은 여운으로 남긴다.The composed tone leaves the sad event with an even deeper resonance.어조 + 여운으로 남기다, effect-stating frame
  • 대구를 이루는 문장 구조는 두 인물의 대조를 강조한다.The parallel sentence structure emphasizes the contrast between the two characters.대구 + 강조하다

2. Identifying figurative language: metaphor, simile, and symbol

Distinguish an implicit comparison (은유) from an explicit one marked with 처럼 or 같이 (직유), and describe what a recurring image seems to symbolize (상징하다).

  • "시간은 강물이다"라는 표현은 은유이다.The expression "time is a river" is a metaphor.quoted fictional phrase + 은유이다, no 처럼/같이
  • "그의 목소리는 마른 나뭇잎처럼 부서졌다"는 직유를 사용한 표현이다."His voice broke like a dry leaf" is an expression that uses a simile.직유 + 처럼, explicit comparison marker
  • 이 글에서 창문은 단절과 그리움을 상징한다.In this piece, the window symbolizes separation and longing.상징하다 + abstract nouns as symbolized meaning

3. Literal versus symbolic reading, and intertextual commentary

Mark clearly which reading is literal and which is symbolic, and describe how a passage evokes or reworks an idea found elsewhere.

  • 표면적으로는 집을 떠나는 이야기이지만, 상징적으로는 정체성을 찾아가는 과정을 그린다.On the surface it is a story about leaving home, but symbolically it depicts a process of searching for identity.표면적으로는 ~지만 상징적으로는 ~, contrastive dual reading
  • 이 대목은 오래된 여행 이야기의 구조를 떠올리게 한다.This passage evokes the structure of an old travel narrative.~을/를 떠올리게 하다, intertextual echo
  • 작가는 이전 세대의 상실감에 응답하듯 비슷한 이미지를 되짚는다.The writer revisits a similar image, as if responding to the previous generation's sense of loss.~에 응답하다 + 되짚다, intertextual response
Building Block
[문체 관찰: 특징 + 효과] + [비유 식별: 은유/직유/상징] + [표면적 의미 vs 상징적 의미] + [상호텍스트적 연결]
An interpretive commentary names a concrete stylistic feature and its effect, identifies specific figurative language and states what it does, distinguishes the literal reading from the symbolic reading, and — where relevant — describes how the passage evokes or responds to another text or idea.
이 글은 짧고 절제된 문장을 반복하여 담담한 어조를 만들어 낸다. "시간은 강물이다"라는 은유는 되돌릴 수 없는 흐름을 나타낸다. 표면적으로는 한 인물이 고향을 떠나는 이야기이지만, 상징적으로는 상실과 정체성 찾기의 과정을 그린다. 이러한 이미지는 이전 세대의 이주 이야기를 떠올리게 하며, 그 상실감에 조용히 응답한다.
This piece repeats short, restrained sentences to create a composed tone. The metaphor "time is a river" represents an irreversible flow. On the surface it is a story of a character leaving their hometown, but symbolically it depicts a process of loss and searching for identity. This imagery evokes an earlier generation's migration narrative and quietly responds to that sense of loss.
Grammar Note — Keeping description, identification, and interpretation separate

A strong interpretive commentary keeps three moves distinct: naming a stylistic feature (문체 관찰), identifying a specific figure of speech (은유/직유/상징 식별), and offering an interpretation of meaning (해석). Do not skip directly to interpretation without first pointing to the concrete textual feature that supports it — a reader should be able to trace your interpretation back to a specific word, image, or sentence pattern.

Common Mistake — Interpreting without pointing to a textual feature

Error: 이 글은 슬프다. (a bare impression, with no textual feature named)

Correction: 짧고 절제된 문장이 슬픔을 직접 말하지 않으면서도 깊은 여운을 남긴다. Name the specific stylistic feature that produces the impression, rather than stating the impression alone.

본문 대화 — Model Exchange

Model Exchange: Seminar Discussion

대학원 세미나에서 수아와 선배의 문학적 산문 토론 (교육용 예시)

선배 이 글의 문체에서 가장 눈에 띄는 특징이 뭐라고 생각해요?What do you think is the most noticeable feature of this piece's style?
수아 짧은 문장을 반복해서 쓰면서 아주 절제된 어조를 만들어 내는 것 같아요.I think it creates a very restrained tone by repeatedly using short sentences.
선배 좋은 관찰이에요. 그럼 "시간은 강물이다"라는 표현은 어떻게 볼 수 있을까요?Good observation. Then how might we understand the expression "time is a river"?
수아 그건 은유예요. 되돌릴 수 없는 시간의 흐름을 나타내는 것 같습니다.That's a metaphor. It seems to represent the irreversible flow of time.
선배 표면적인 이야기와 상징적인 의미는 어떻게 다를까요?How do the surface story and the symbolic meaning differ?
수아 표면적으로는 고향을 떠나는 이야기이지만, 상징적으로는 정체성을 찾아가는 과정을 그리는 것 같아요.On the surface it's a story about leaving home, but symbolically it seems to depict a process of searching for identity.
읽기 연습 — Reading: Literary-Adjacent Prose Excerpt

Reading: A Short Literary-Adjacent Passage

Read the following short passage, written for this course as original, general-purpose instructional material. It is not excerpted from any published work, and no real author is named.

Analysis task:

  1. Identify one metaphor in the passage and explain what it represents.
  2. Identify one recurring image (for example, 지붕, 창문, 사진) and describe what it might symbolize.
  3. Describe one stylistic feature of the passage (sentence length, repetition, or tone) and the effect it creates.
  4. State the literal, surface-level story of the passage in one sentence, then state a possible symbolic reading in a second sentence.
  5. Write one original sentence describing how this passage might evoke or respond to another migration or departure narrative.

말하기 연습 — Speaking Practice

Speaking Practice

1단계 — 문체 관찰하기 — Describing style aloud

Choose a short fictional passage (your own or one from this chapter). Describe, in two to three sentences, one stylistic feature and the effect it produces.

2단계 — 비유와 상징 논의하기 — Discussing figuration aloud

With a partner, take turns identifying a metaphor, simile, or symbol in a fictional passage and explaining what it represents. Your partner should ask one follow-up question about an alternative interpretation.

혼자 하는 연습 — Solo alternative

Record yourself describing the reading passage above: name one stylistic feature, one figure of speech, the surface story, and a possible symbolic reading.

쓰기 워크숍 — Writing Workshop

Writing Workshop: A Short Interpretive Commentary

Choose the reading passage above, or a comparable fictional passage of your own invention, and write a short interpretive commentary.

  • 문체 관찰하기. Name one concrete stylistic feature of the passage and the effect it creates.
  • 비유 식별하기. Identify at least one metaphor, simile, or symbol and explain what it represents.
  • 표면적·상징적 의미 구분하기. State the literal story in one sentence and a symbolic reading in another, marked clearly with 표면적으로는 ~지만 상징적으로는 ~.
  • 상호텍스트적 연결 짓기. Write one sentence describing how the passage evokes or responds to another text, idea, or narrative pattern.
  • 점검하기. Compare your full draft against the checklist below before submitting.
  • 1차 초안 (impression stated without textual support) 이 글은 슬프고 좋다. 기차 장면이 인상적이다.
수정본 (feature named; interpretation supported) 짧고 절제된 문장이 슬픔을 직접 말하지 않으면서도 깊은 여운을 남긴다. "시간은 강물이다"라는 은유는 되돌릴 수 없는 상실을 나타낸다.

    체크리스트 — Checklist:

    • At least one stylistic feature is named along with the effect it creates.
    • At least one instance of figurative language is identified and correctly labeled (은유, 직유, or 상징).
    • The literal and symbolic readings are stated in separate, clearly marked sentences.
    • At least one sentence describes an intertextual connection.
    • No real author, title, or published work is named or quoted.
    • Hangeul, spacing, and particle use are accurate, with no romanization.
    • No structure appears beyond what is active through Volume V, Chapter 11, plus this chapter's two new systems.

    Culture and Communication

Culture in Context — Understatement and restraint in Korean literary prose

Contemporary Korean literary and literary-adjacent prose often favors a restrained, understated presentation of strong emotion, letting concrete images and spare sentence structure carry feeling rather than stating it directly. Recognizing this stylistic tendency helps learners avoid mistaking restraint for a lack of emotional content.

Institutional Note — Seminar discussion of a text

Graduate literature and humanities seminars, as modeled in this chapter's dialogue, commonly proceed by asking participants to point to a specific textual feature before offering an interpretation, rather than accepting an unsupported impression. Learners producing interpretive commentary should expect this same expectation of textually grounded reading.

    Common Mistakes to Avoid

Common Mistake — Confusing 은유 and 직유

Error: Labeling "그의 목소리는 마른 나뭇잎처럼 부서졌다" as 은유, despite the explicit comparison marker 처럼.

Correction: A comparison marked with 처럼 or 같이 is 직유 (simile); an implicit comparison with no such marker, such as 시간은 강물이다, is 은유 (metaphor).

Common Mistake — Treating the symbolic reading as the only correct reading

Error: Stating a symbolic interpretation as the single fixed meaning of a passage, as if no other reading were possible.

Correction: Present the literal reading first, then offer a symbolic reading as one plausible interpretation, using language such as 상징적으로 볼 수 있다 or ~로 해석될 수 있다 rather than an absolute claim.

Common Mistake — Naming an intertextual echo without specifying the connection

Error: 이 글은 다른 이야기 같다. (a vague claim of resemblance with no specific point of connection)

Correction: 이 글의 떠남과 상실의 이미지는 이전 세대의 이주 이야기를 떠올리게 한다. Name the specific image, theme, or structure that creates the intertextual echo.

    누적 복습 — Cumulative review

This chapter recycles attribution, critique, and synthesis language from Chapter 11 — an interpretive commentary can attribute a reading to a text feature, critique the limits of one interpretation, and synthesize literal and symbolic readings — and introduces stylistic, figurative, and intertextual commentary as the foundation for Unit III's historical and academic work in Chapters 13 and 14.

    Practical Performance Task

수행 과제 — Chapter 12 Performance Task

문학적 산문 해석 논평 작성 — Producing a Short Interpretive Commentary

Use the reading passage from this chapter, or invent a comparable fictional literary-adjacent passage of similar length. Produce a complete project with two parts.

    • Written interpretive commentary (Korean): A short passage (approximately 120–180 words) naming a stylistic feature and its effect, identifying at least one figure of speech, stating a literal reading and a symbolic reading, and describing one intertextual connection.
    • Oral summary: A 2–3 sentence spoken summary of your commentary, delivered aloud or recorded.

    Answer Key

    Reading analysis

    1. Sample response: "시간은 강물이다" is a metaphor representing time as an irreversible, unstoppable flow.
    2. Sample response: The recurring image of the roofs (지붕) growing more distant may symbolize the growing separation from home and childhood.
    3. Sample response: The passage uses short, spare sentences that create a restrained, composed tone even while describing an emotionally difficult departure.
    4. Sample response: Literally, a man leaves his hometown by train, looking back at a photograph. Symbolically, the passage may depict the impossibility of returning to a past self or a lost sense of belonging.
    5. Sample response: 이 글의 떠남과 되돌아갈 수 없는 시간의 이미지는 이전 세대의 이주와 실향의 이야기를 떠올리게 한다.

    Listening comprehension

    • Sample response: 수아 identifies the repetition of short sentences, saying it creates a very restrained tone.
    • Sample response: She labels "시간은 강물이다" as a metaphor (은유) representing the irreversible flow of time.
    • Sample response: She distinguishes the surface story of leaving home from the symbolic process of searching for identity, using 표면적으로는 ~지만 상징적으로는 ~.

Section D — Sample interpretive commentary (abridged)

이 글은 짧고 절제된 문장을 반복하여 담담한 어조를 만들어 낸다. "시간은 강물이다"라는 은유는 되돌릴 수 없는 흐름을 나타낸다. 표면적으로는 한 인물이 기차를 타고 고향을 떠나는 이야기이지만, 상징적으로는 과거의 자아와 소속감을 잃어 가는 과정을 그린다. 멀어지는 지붕들의 이미지는 이전 세대의 이주와 실향의 이야기를 떠올리게 한다.

    Section E — Sample discussion

Sample response: A well-constructed interpretive commentary names a specific stylistic feature and ties it to a concrete effect, correctly labels any figurative language it identifies, keeps the literal and symbolic readings in separate marked sentences, and closes by naming a specific intertextual connection rather than a vague claim of resemblance.

    Looking Ahead

지금 할 수 있는 것 — What you can do now

You can describe a passage's stylistic features and their effects, identify and label metaphor, simile, and symbol, distinguish literal from symbolic readings, and describe an intertextual connection between a passage and another text or narrative pattern.

    13장역사·문화 텍스트 읽기

Chapter 13 continues Unit III with historical and cultural texts, developing historical register and careful interpretation of culturally embedded material, while continuing to recycle the stylistic and interpretive skills developed in this chapter.
