Volume I, Chapter 5: Unit I Assessment · Speak and Write Mandarin Chinese: Foundations of Practical Communication

Chapter Objectives

This is a cumulative assessment chapter. By completing it, you will demonstrate that you can:

  1. Greet someone, introduce yourself, and ask and answer 是/不是 and 这/那/什么/哪 questions from Chapters 1-2.
  2. Describe your family using 的, 有/没有, and 几/多少 from Chapter 3.
  3. Ask and state the day, the date, and the time using the systems from Chapter 4.
  4. Place time expressions correctly before the verb.
  5. Produce the 一 and 不 tone-sandhi patterns with reasonable accuracy in familiar words.
  6. Read and write short texts combining introductions, family, and schedule information using only the characters, Pinyin, and grammar activated in Chapters 1-4.
  7. Complete an integrated listening, speaking, reading, and writing task without new instruction.

Communication Scenario

A new student, 小林, is joining Sarah's Mandarin class this week. Before the class gathering that Sarah and 大卫 arranged in Chapter 4, Sarah wants to help 小林 get to know the class: who everyone is, a little about their families, and the schedule for the week, including the gathering itself.

  1. This chapter does not teach anything new. It asks you to bring together everything from Chapters 1 through 4 — greetings and identity, family, and numbers, dates, and time — to help welcome 小林 into the class.
  2. Every task below uses only vocabulary, characters, and grammar you have already studied.

Where This Chapter Fits

Chapter 5 closes Unit I. It does not introduce new productive grammar, new high-burden characters, or new pronunciation systems. Instead, it verifies that you can coordinate everything scheduled in Chapters 1-4 in one connected task: introducing people, describing family, and managing a simple schedule.

Coming Into This Chapter

Greetings, 是/不是, 这/那/什么/哪 from Chapters 1-2; 的, 有/没有, 几/多少 from Chapter 3; numbers 0-99, days, dates, clock time, time-before-verb order, and 一/不 sandhi from Chapter 4.

New in This Chapter

No new vocabulary, characters, or grammar. This chapter is entirely review and integrated assessment.

Looking Forward

Chapter 6 opens Unit II with food, drink, and preferences, introducing 喜欢, 想, and 要.

生词复习 — Vocabulary Review

Cumulative Vocabulary Review

The table below gathers the productive vocabulary from Chapters 1-4 that this chapter's tasks require. Nothing here is new; use it to check yourself before beginning the assessment tasks.

If any of these items feel unfamiliar, review the relevant chapter's vocabulary section before continuing. This chapter assesses only what appears above; no new words are introduced.

Cumulative Tones and Characters Review

5.1 Tone review

Pronunciation Focus — 一/不 sandhi, one more time

Before you begin, say these familiar words aloud and confirm the tone shift: 一个 (yí ge, second tone), 一天 (yì tiān, fourth tone), 不是 (bú shì, second tone), 不喝 (bù hē, fourth tone, from Chapter 6 preview vocabulary you may have already heard). This chapter does not add a new sandhi rule; it checks whether you can apply the rule from Chapter 4 in new combinations.

5.2 Character review

No new characters appear in this chapter. The devanagari-style chart below simply regroups characters you have already studied, organized by the chapter in which they were first introduced.

我wǒ — I/me (Ch. 1)
是shì — to be (Ch. 1)
学xué — to study (Ch. 2)
的de — possessive marker (Ch. 3)
有yǒu — to have (Ch. 3)
今jīn — present, in 今天 (Ch. 4)
点diǎn — o'clock (Ch. 4)

You are not asked to handwrite any character beyond what was already scheduled as a handwriting item in Chapters 1-4. This review does not raise your handwriting burden.

Cumulative Grammar Review

5.3 Identity and description

Purpose: confirm control of 是/不是 and 这/那/什么/哪 from Chapters 1-2.

  • 这是我的老师。 Zhè shì wǒ de lǎoshī. This is my teacher.
  • 那不是我的书。 Nà bú shì wǒ de shū. That is not my book.

5.4 Possession and quantity

Purpose: confirm control of 的, 有/没有, and 几/多少 from Chapter 3.

  • 你有几个姐姐? Nǐ yǒu jǐ ge jiějie? How many older sisters do you have?
  • 我没有姐姐,我有一个弟弟。 Wǒ méiyǒu jiějie, wǒ yǒu yí ge dìdi. I don't have an older sister; I have a younger brother.

5.5 Time-before-verb order

Purpose: confirm control of day, date, clock-time expressions, and their placement before the verb, from Chapter 4.

Language Building Block — Review: [Subject] + [Time] + [Verb Phrase]
小林今天九点见老师。
The time word 今天 and the clock time 九点 both appear before the verb 见, exactly as established in Chapter 4.

No new word-order rule is introduced here. This section only confirms that the Chapter 4 rule transfers correctly to new sentences about new people.

Model Dialogue

Setting: Sarah introduces the new student, 小林, to 大卫 before class.

莎拉 大卫,这是小林,他是新学生。 Dàwèi, zhè shì Xiǎo Lín, tā shì xīn xuésheng. David, this is Xiao Lin, he is a new student.
大卫 你好,小林!你有兄弟姐妹吗? Nǐ hǎo, Xiǎo Lín! Nǐ yǒu xiōngdì jiěmèi ma? Hello, Xiao Lin! Do you have any siblings?
小林 我有一个哥哥,没有姐姐。 Wǒ yǒu yí ge gēge, méiyǒu jiějie. I have one older brother, no older sister.
莎拉 小林,我们的聚会是星期五,九月十二号,六点半。 Xiǎo Lín, wǒmen de jùhuì shì xīngqīwǔ, jiǔ yuè shí'èr hào, liù diǎn bàn. Xiao Lin, our gathering is Friday, September 12th, at 6:30.
小林 好,我星期五六点半到。 Hǎo, wǒ xīngqīwǔ liù diǎn bàn dào. Okay, I'll arrive Friday at 6:30.

理解问题 — Comprehension questions:

  1. 小林有哥哥吗?有姐姐吗? (Does Xiao Lin have an older brother? An older sister?)
  2. 聚会是星期几?几月几号?几点? (What day, date, and time is the gathering?)

Listening Assessment

Ask your instructor, a study partner, or a fluent Mandarin speaker to read the passage below aloud twice, at a natural pace. Complete the table using only what you have studied in Chapters 1-4.

If no speaker is available, this is a Listening Script for Independent Use. Read the passage aloud yourself, slowly at first, then at a more natural pace. Any spoken model should be verified by a fluent Mandarin speaker before being treated as a pronunciation standard.

自我介绍 — Self-introduction:
"你好,我是小林,我是学生。我有一个哥哥,没有姐姐。今天是星期二,九月九号。我的聚会是星期五,九月十二号,六点半。"

听力任务 — Listening task:

QuestionAnswer
小林是谁?他是做什么的? (Who is 小林? What does he do?)______
小林有几个哥哥?有姐姐吗? (How many older brothers does 小林 have? An older sister?)______
今天星期几?几号? (What day and date is today?)______
聚会是星期几?几点? (What day and time is the gathering?)______

Reading Assessment

Read the short introduction note below and answer the comprehension questions.

自我介绍 — Introduction Note
大家好!我是马克,我是学生。这是我的家人:我有一个哥哥,一个妹妹,没有姐姐。我们家有四口人。今天星期三,九月十号。我明天九点上课,下午三点没有课。
Hello everyone! I am Mark, I am a student. This is my family: I have one older brother, one younger sister, no older sister. There are four people in my family. Today is Wednesday, September 10th. Tomorrow I have class at 9:00, and no class at 3:00 in the afternoon.

理解问题 — Comprehension questions:

  1. How many people are in Mark's family, and who are they?
  2. 马克明天几点上课?下午几点没有课? (What time does Mark have class tomorrow? What time does he not have class in the afternoon?)

Writing Assessment

Write a short introduction note welcoming 小林 to the class, following the models above. Use only vocabulary, characters, and grammar from Chapters 1-4.

写作任务 — Writing task: Write five or six sentences in simplified characters, typing them with Pinyin input if possible, or copying/handwriting the characters you have already been assigned for handwriting in Chapters 1-4. Your note must include:

  1. An introduction. State who you are, using 我是....
  2. A family statement. Use 有/没有 and, if useful, 几 to describe your family.
  3. Today's day and date. Use the 今天星期...,...月...号 pattern from Chapter 4.
  4. One scheduled time. Use a time-before-verb sentence with 点.

修改清单 — Editing checklist:

  • Every sentence uses only vocabulary and grammar already introduced in Chapters 1-4.
  • 是/不是 and 有/没有 are used correctly and are not confused with each other.
  • Time words appear before the verb, not after.
  • Dates follow the month-then-day order; clock times follow the hour-then-minute order.
  • A Chinese period (。) or question mark (?) ends each sentence.

Speaking Assessment

控制性练习 — Controlled practice: reading the model dialogue aloud

Read the model dialogue above aloud twice: once slowly, sounding out each tone, and once at a natural pace. Pay attention to the 一/不 sandhi in 一个 and 不是, and to placing every time word before its verb.

交际任务 — Communicative task: welcome interview

With a partner or small group, take turns playing 小林 and a classmate. Introduce yourselves, ask about family using 有/没有 and 几, and confirm the day, date, and time of an activity together.

独立练习 — Solo alternative

Record yourself introducing yourself, describing your family, and stating today's day, date, and one scheduled time, in five or six connected sentences. Listen back and check your 一/不 sandhi and your time-before-verb word order.

Culture and Communication Review

Culture in Context — Introducing a new person

In many Mandarin-speaking contexts, a third person is commonly introduced before the new person speaks for themselves, as Sarah does for 小林 above. This is a common pattern in classroom and social settings, though individual and regional practice varies.

Culture in Context — Talking about siblings

Mandarin distinguishes older and younger siblings by separate words, such as 哥哥 (older brother) and 弟弟 (younger brother), rather than a single word for "brother." Keep this distinction in mind when describing your own family.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Common Mistake — Confusing 是/不是 with 有/没有

Error: Saying *我不是哥哥 to mean "I don't have an older brother."

Correction: Possession uses 有/没有, not 是/不是: 我没有哥哥。 Review Grammar 5.3 and 5.4.

Common Mistake — Placing time words after the verb

Error: Saying *我上课星期五, placing the time word after the verb.

Correction: Time words come before the verb: 我星期五上课。 Review Grammar 5.5 and Chapter 4, Language Building Block 4.5.

Common Mistake — Forgetting 一/不 tone sandhi in new combinations

Error: Pronouncing 一个 as *yī ge instead of yí ge when speaking quickly.

Correction: The sandhi rule applies regardless of speaking speed: since 个 is fourth tone, 一 always shifts to second tone before it. Review Chapter 4, Pronunciation 4.1.

1. Return to the model dialogue and answer in English:

  1. Who is being introduced to whom?
  2. What day, date, and time is the gathering?
