我喜欢喝茶

Volume I, Chapter 6: Food, Drink, and Preferences · Speak and Write Mandarin Chinese: Foundations of Practical Communication

Chapter Objectives

By the end of this chapter, you will be able to:

  1. Use 喜欢 to say what you like, with both nouns and verb phrases.
  2. Use 想 and 要 to say what you would like to do or want to have.
  3. Name common foods and drinks and ask what someone would like to eat or drink.
  4. Form basic verb-object phrases such as 喝茶 and 吃饭.
  5. Pronounce the neutral tone correctly in 喜欢 and other familiar words.
  6. Read and write a short passage describing food and drink preferences.
  7. Order something to eat or drink in a simple, controlled exchange.

Communication Scenario

The class gathering that Sarah, 大卫, and 小林 planned in Chapters 4 and 5 has arrived. Everyone is at a small café before the gathering starts, and they need to decide what to order and talk about what they like to eat and drink.

  1. This chapter introduces 喜欢, 想, and 要, along with enough food and drink vocabulary to order something and talk about preferences.
  2. Everything in this chapter builds on the identity, family, and time systems from Chapters 1-5.

Where This Chapter Fits

Chapter 6 opens Unit II. It introduces one tightly related cluster of new material — 喜欢, 想, 要, and basic verb-object frames — inside the familiar food-and-drink domain, while continuing to recycle 是/不是, 的, 有/没有, and time-before-verb order from Unit I.

Coming Into This Chapter

Greetings and identity, 是/不是, 的, 有/没有, numbers, dates, and time-before-verb order from Chapters 1-5.

New in This Chapter

喜欢, 想, 要, basic verb-object frames, and food and drink vocabulary.

Looking Forward

Chapter 7 continues Unit II with daily routines, introducing 每, 都, and the 不/没 contrast.

生词 — Core Vocabulary

All items above are productive: you are expected to recognize, type, and use them in the tasks below. No traditional-character forms or regional variants are introduced in this chapter.

Pronunciation Focus

6.1 Neutral tone in 喜欢

Pronunciation Focus — Neutral tone

喜欢 is pronounced xǐhuan: the first syllable carries a third tone, and the second syllable, huan, is unstressed and carries no tone mark. Do not pronounce it as a full first, second, or fourth tone. This is the same pattern you have already met in words such as 朋友 (péngyou) and 什么 (shénme).

6.2 Third-tone sandhi review

Pronunciation Focus — 你喜欢吗?

When 你 (nǐ, third tone) is followed by 喜 (xǐ, also third tone), the first third tone shifts toward a rising tone in connected speech: ní xǐhuan. This is the same third-tone sandhi rule you practiced with 你好 in Chapter 1.

Continue to monitor the 一 and 不 sandhi patterns from Chapters 4 and 5 as they appear in this chapter's vocabulary, such as 一点儿 (yìdiǎnr, fourth tone before a third-tone syllable) and 不喝 (bù hē, fourth tone remains unchanged before a first-tone syllable).

Grammar and Sentence Patterns

6.3 喜欢 with nouns and verb phrases

Purpose: express likes and dislikes about things and activities.

Language Building Block — [Subject] + 喜欢 + [Noun / Verb Phrase]
我喜欢茶。 / 我喜欢喝茶。
喜欢 can take a simple noun (我喜欢茶, "I like tea") or a verb phrase (我喜欢喝茶, "I like drinking tea"). Both are correct; the verb phrase is more specific.
  • 你喜欢咖啡吗? Nǐ xǐhuan kāfēi ma? Do you like coffee?
  • 我不喜欢喝咖啡,我喜欢喝茶。 Wǒ bù xǐhuan hē kāfēi, wǒ xǐhuan hē chá. I don't like drinking coffee; I like drinking tea.

Negate 喜欢 with 不, following the general negation pattern you already know: 不喜欢.

6.4 想 and 要 for wants and intentions

Purpose: distinguish "would like to do something" from "want a specific thing."

Language Building Block — [Subject] + 想/要 + [Verb Phrase or Noun]
我想喝茶。 / 我要一杯茶。
想 introduces a verb phrase and expresses a wish or intention ("I would like to drink tea"). 要 can introduce either a verb phrase ("I want to drink tea") or a noun directly ("I want a cup of tea"), and often sounds more direct than 想.
  • 你想吃什么? Nǐ xiǎng chī shénme? What would you like to eat?
  • 我要一碗面条,谢谢。 Wǒ yào yì wǎn miàntiáo, xièxie. I want a bowl of noodles, thank you.

This chapter only asks you to choose between 想 and 要 in simple ordering and preference contexts. Finer distinctions between the two are developed further in later chapters.

6.5 Basic verb-object frames

Purpose: recognize and use common verb-object expressions for eating and drinking.

  • 我吃米饭,你喝水。 Wǒ chī mǐfàn, nǐ hē shuǐ. I'll eat rice, you drink water.

吃饭 and 喝茶 are verb-object expressions: a verb (吃/喝) plus its object (饭/茶). You can replace the object with other foods and drinks, as in 吃面条 or 喝咖啡.

Model Dialogue

Setting: Sarah, 大卫, and 小林 are ordering at the café before the class gathering.

莎拉 小林,你想喝什么? Xiǎo Lín, nǐ xiǎng hē shénme? Xiao Lin, what would you like to drink?
小林 我喜欢喝茶。我要一杯茶,谢谢。 Wǒ xǐhuan hē chá. Wǒ yào yì bēi chá, xièxie. I like drinking tea. I'd like a cup of tea, thank you.
大卫 我不喜欢喝茶,我喜欢喝咖啡。这个咖啡好喝吗? Wǒ bù xǐhuan hē chá, wǒ xǐhuan hē kāfēi. Zhège kāfēi hǎohē ma? I don't like tea, I like coffee. Is this coffee good?
莎拉 很好喝!你想吃一点儿东西吗? Hěn hǎohē! Nǐ xiǎng chī yìdiǎnr dōngxi ma? It's very good! Would you like to eat a little something?
大卫 好,我要一碗面条。 Hǎo, wǒ yào yì wǎn miàntiáo. Okay, I'll have a bowl of noodles.

理解问题 — Comprehension questions:

  1. 小林喜欢喝什么?大卫喜欢喝什么? (What does Xiao Lin like to drink? What does David like to drink?)
  2. 大卫要吃什么? (What does David want to eat?)

Listening Practice

Ask your instructor, a study partner, or a fluent Mandarin speaker to read the passage below aloud twice, at a natural pace. Complete the table using only what you have studied through Chapter 6.

If no speaker is available, this is a Listening Script for Independent Use. Read the passage aloud yourself, slowly at first, then at a more natural pace. Any spoken model should be verified by a fluent Mandarin speaker before being treated as a pronunciation standard.

在咖啡馆 — At the café:
"你好,你想喝什么?我喜欢喝茶,我要一杯茶。我朋友不喜欢喝茶,他喜欢喝咖啡。我们都想吃一点儿东西:我要米饭,我朋友要面条。"

听力任务 — Listening task:

QuestionAnswer
说话的人喜欢喝什么? (What does the speaker like to drink?)______
说话的人的朋友喜欢喝什么? (What does the speaker's friend like to drink?)______
说话的人要吃什么?朋友要吃什么? (What does the speaker want to eat? What does the friend want to eat?)______

Reading Practice

Read the short note below and answer the comprehension questions.

我喜欢的食物和饮料 — What I Like to Eat and Drink
大家好!我是马克。我喜欢喝茶,不喜欢喝咖啡。我也喜欢吃米饭,米饭很好吃。我妹妹喜欢吃面条,不喜欢吃米饭。今天我们想去咖啡馆,我要一杯茶和一点儿米饭。
Hello everyone! I am Mark. I like drinking tea, and I don't like coffee. I also like eating rice — rice is very tasty. My younger sister likes noodles, not rice. Today we want to go to the café; I want a cup of tea and a little rice.

理解问题 — Comprehension questions:

  1. 马克喜欢喝什么?不喜欢喝什么? (What does Mark like to drink? What does he not like?)
  2. 马克的妹妹喜欢吃什么? (What does Mark's younger sister like to eat?)

Writing Workshop

Write a short note describing what you and one other person like to eat and drink, following the models above. Use only vocabulary, characters, and grammar from Chapters 1-6.

写作任务 — Writing task: Write five or six sentences in simplified characters, typing them with Pinyin input if possible, or copying/handwriting the characters you have already been assigned for handwriting. Your note must include:

  1. A preference statement. Use 喜欢 with a noun or a verb phrase.
  2. A contrast. Use 不喜欢 to state something you do not like.
  3. A want statement. Use 想 or 要 to say what you would like to eat or drink today.
  4. A description of someone else. Use 的 and 有/没有 from earlier chapters if useful, together with a preference of theirs.

修改清单 — Editing checklist:

  • 喜欢 is followed by either a noun or a verb phrase, not left incomplete.
  • 想 and 要 are not confused with each other or with 喜欢.
  • Verb-object expressions such as 喝茶 and 吃饭 keep their verb and object together.
  • A Chinese period (。) or question mark (?) ends each sentence.

Speaking Practice

控制性练习 — Controlled practice: reading the model dialogue aloud

Read the model dialogue above aloud twice: once slowly, sounding out each tone, and once at a natural pace. Pay attention to the neutral tone in 喜欢 and the third-tone sandhi in 你喜欢.

交际任务 — Communicative task: ordering at a café

With a partner or small group, take turns playing a customer and a server. Ask what the other person would like to eat and drink, using 喜欢, 想, and 要, and respond with a preference and an order.

独立练习 — Solo alternative

Record yourself describing three things you like and one thing you do not like to eat or drink, and stating what you would like today. Listen back and check your neutral tone in 喜欢 and your verb-object word order.

Culture and Communication

Culture in Context — Ordering and offering food

In many Mandarin-speaking settings, offering a guest something to eat or drink is a common way of showing hospitality, and a guest may decline once or twice before accepting. This pattern varies by relationship, setting, and region, so treat it as a general tendency rather than a fixed rule.

Culture in Context — 谢谢 when ordering

Adding 谢谢 when placing an order, as 小林 does in the model dialogue, is common and polite in service settings, though the exact level of formality can vary by context and speaker.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Common Mistake — Leaving 喜欢 without a noun or verb phrase

Error: Saying *我喜欢。 with nothing following 喜欢.

Correction: 喜欢 needs an object: 我喜欢茶。 or 我喜欢喝茶。 Review Grammar 6.3.

Common Mistake — Confusing 想 and 要 with 喜欢

Error: Saying *我喜欢喝茶今天 to mean "I want to drink tea today."

Correction: Use 想 or 要 for a specific present want: 我今天想喝茶。 Reserve 喜欢 for general preferences. Review Grammar 6.4 and Chapter 4's time-before-verb rule.

Common Mistake — Splitting the verb-object expression

Error: Saying *我喝 alone to mean "I'll have a drink," without stating what.

Correction: Keep the verb and its object together unless context has already made the object clear: 我喝茶。 Review Grammar 6.5.
