我每天学习中文

Volume I, Chapter 7: Daily Routines · Speak and Write Mandarin Chinese: Foundations of Practical Communication

Chapter Objectives

By the end of this chapter, you will be able to:

  1. Use 每天 and other 每 expressions to talk about habitual actions.
  2. Use 都 to say that something is true of every member of a group.
  3. Use 也 to add a similar fact about a new subject.
  4. Begin distinguishing 不 and 没 in simple habitual and completed-action contexts.
  5. Place adverbs such as 每天, 都, 也, and 不 correctly before the verb.
  6. Describe a simple daily routine in speech and in writing.

Communication Scenario

After the café gathering in Chapter 6, Sarah, 大卫, and 小林 start comparing their weekday schedules for a shared study plan. They need to describe what they do every day, what they have in common, and what they do not do.

  1. This chapter introduces 每, 都, 也, and the beginning of the 不/没 contrast, along with vocabulary for daily routines.
  2. Everything in this chapter builds on the identity, family, time, and preference systems from Chapters 1-6.

Where This Chapter Fits

Chapter 7 continues Unit II. It introduces one tightly related cluster of new material — 每, 都, 也, and the developing 不/没 contrast — inside the familiar daily-routine domain, while continuing to recycle 喜欢, 想, 要, and time-before-verb order from Chapter 6 and earlier.

Coming Into This Chapter

Identity, 的, 有/没有, time-before-verb order, 喜欢, 想, 要, and basic verb-object frames from Chapters 1-6.

New in This Chapter

每, 都, 也, the beginning 不/没 contrast, and adverb-before-verb placement.

Looking Forward

Chapter 8 continues Unit II with location and places, introducing 在, 哪儿/哪里, and existence with 有.

生词 — Core Vocabulary

Core Vocabulary

All items above are productive: you are expected to recognize, type, and use them in the tasks below. No traditional-character forms or regional variants are introduced in this chapter.

Pronunciation Focus

7.1 Third-tone sandhi with 每

Pronunciation Focus — 每天

每 (měi, third tone) is followed by 天 (tiān, first tone), so no sandhi applies here. But when 每 is followed by another third-tone syllable, such as 每晚 (měiwǎn, "every evening"), the same third-tone sandhi rule from Chapter 1's 你好 applies: the first third tone rises, producing méiwǎn in connected speech.

7.2 Neutral tone in 起床 and 休息

Pronunciation Focus — Neutral tone review

The second syllable of 休息 (xiūxi) is unstressed and carries no tone mark, following the same pattern as 喜欢 (xǐhuan) from Chapter 6. 起床 (qǐchuáng), by contrast, keeps a full tone on both syllables — do not neutralize it by analogy.

Continue to monitor 不 sandhi as it appears in this chapter's negation patterns, such as 不忙 (bù máng, fourth tone unchanged before a second tone) and 不休息 (bù xiūxi, fourth tone unchanged before a first tone).

Grammar and Sentence Patterns

7.3 每天 and habitual time expressions

Purpose: describe actions that happen regularly.

Language Building Block — [Subject] + 每天 + [Verb Phrase]
我每天学习中文。
每天 is a time word and, like the time expressions you learned in Chapter 4, it comes before the verb phrase, not after it. You can replace 天 with other time units, such as 每天 (every day), 每天早上 (every morning), or 每天晚上 (every evening).
  • 我每天七点起床。 Wǒ měitiān qī diǎn qǐchuáng. I get up at seven every day.
  • 他每天晚上学习中文。 Tā měitiān wǎnshang xuéxí Zhōngwén. He studies Chinese every evening.

This is the same time-before-verb principle from Chapter 4's 今天星期几? — Mandarin time expressions consistently precede the verb phrase.

7.4 都 for "all" or "both"

Purpose: state that something is true of an entire group already mentioned.

Language Building Block — [Plural Subject] + 都 + [Verb Phrase]
我们都喜欢喝茶。
都 always comes after the subject it refers to and before the verb. It sums up a group that has already been named or implied — it cannot introduce a new group on its own.
  • 莎拉和大卫都工作。 Shālā hé Dàwèi dōu gōngzuò. Both Sarah and David work.
  • 我们每天都很忙。 Wǒmen měitiān dōu hěn máng. We are all busy every day.

Notice that 每天 and 都 can appear together, both before the verb, as in 我们每天都很忙.

7.5 也 for "also"

Purpose: add a similar fact about a new subject.

Language Building Block — [Subject] + 也 + [Verb Phrase]
我也学习中文。
也 comes directly before the verb phrase, just like 都. Use it when a new subject shares a fact already stated about someone else.
  • 小林每天运动,我也每天运动。 Xiǎo Lín měitiān yùndòng, wǒ yě měitiān yùndòng. Xiao Lin exercises every day; I also exercise every day.

When both 也 and 都 apply to the same sentence, 也 normally comes first: 我们也都很忙 ("We are also all busy").

7.6 The 不/没 contrast begins

Purpose: begin distinguishing general/habitual negation from negation of a completed or existing thing.

Language Building Block — 不 for habits and general statements; 没(有) for what does not exist or has not happened
我不工作。 / 我没有工作。
In this chapter, use 不 to negate habitual actions, adjectival predicates, and general statements: 我不忙 ("I am not busy"), 我不每天运动 is incorrect — instead say 我每天不运动 or, more naturally, 我不常运动. Use 没有 to say something does not exist or is not possessed, exactly as you learned in Chapter 3: 我没有工作 ("I do not have a job").
  • 我不忙,我休息。 Wǒ bù máng, wǒ xiūxi. I am not busy; I am resting.
  • 她没有工作。 Tā méiyǒu gōngzuò. She does not have a job.

This chapter only asks you to keep 不 for habitual/general statements and 没有 for possession, following the pattern from Chapter 3. Negating a specific completed action with 没 alone is developed further in Chapter 16.

7.7 Adverb placement before the verb

Purpose: place 每天, 都, 也, and 不 correctly in a sentence.

  • 我们每天都不上班。 Wǒmen měitiān dōu bú shàngbān. None of us go to work, every day (i.e., we never work).

When several adverbs occur together, the general order in this chapter's sentences is: time word (每天) → 也/都 → 不 → verb. You do not need to memorize this as a rigid rule yet; use the model sentences above as your reference point.

Model Dialogue

Setting: Sarah, 大卫, and 小林 compare daily schedules while planning a study time.

莎拉 你们每天几点起床? Nǐmen měitiān jǐ diǎn qǐchuáng? What time do you two get up every day?
小林 我每天七点起床,然后上班。 Wǒ měitiān qī diǎn qǐchuáng, ránhòu shàngbān. I get up at seven every day, and then go to work.
大卫 我也七点起床,可是我不上班,我上课。 Wǒ yě qī diǎn qǐchuáng, kěshì wǒ bú shàngbān, wǒ shàngkè. I also get up at seven, but I don't go to work — I go to class.
莎拉 我们都很忙!你们每天运动吗? Wǒmen dōu hěn máng! Nǐmen měitiān yùndòng ma? We're all so busy! Do you two exercise every day?
小林 我每天运动,大卫不常运动,他晚上休息。 Wǒ měitiān yùndòng, Dàwèi bù cháng yùndòng, tā wǎnshang xiūxi. I exercise every day; David doesn't exercise often, he rests in the evening.

理解问题 — Comprehension questions:

  1. 小林和大卫每天几点起床? (What time do Xiao Lin and David get up every day?)
  2. 谁每天运动?谁不常运动? (Who exercises every day? Who does not exercise often?)

Listening Practice

Ask your instructor, a study partner, or a fluent Mandarin speaker to read the passage below aloud twice, at a natural pace. Complete the table using only what you have studied through Chapter 7.

If no speaker is available, this is a Listening Script for Independent Use. Read the passage aloud yourself, slowly at first, then at a more natural pace. Any spoken model should be verified by a fluent Mandarin speaker before being treated as a pronunciation standard.

我的一天 — My day:
"我每天七点起床。我不工作,我上课。我也每天运动。我的朋友马克每天工作,他不上课。我们都很忙,可是我们每天晚上都休息。"

听力任务 — Listening task:

QuestionAnswer
说话的人每天几点起床? (What time does the speaker get up every day?)______
说话的人上班还是上课? (Does the speaker go to work or attend class?)______
马克每天做什么? (What does Mark do every day?)______

Reading Practice

Read the short note below and answer the comprehension questions.

我们的一天 — Our Day
大家好!我是小林。我每天七点起床,然后运动。我不工作,我上课。我的朋友莎拉也每天七点起床,可是她工作,她不上课。我们都很忙,可是我们都喜欢我们的生活。晚上我们都休息,不学习。
Hello everyone! I am Xiao Lin. I get up at seven every day, and then I exercise. I don't work; I go to class. My friend Sarah also gets up at seven every day, but she works — she doesn't go to class. We are both busy, but we both like our lives. In the evening we both rest; we don't study.

理解问题 — Comprehension questions:

  1. 小林每天做什么? (What does Xiao Lin do every day?)
  2. 莎拉工作还是上课? (Does Sarah work or attend class?)

Writing Workshop

Write a short note describing your daily routine and comparing it to one other person's routine, following the models above. Use only vocabulary, characters, and grammar from Chapters 1-7.

写作任务 — Writing task: Write five or six sentences in simplified characters, typing them with Pinyin input if possible, or copying/handwriting the characters you have already been assigned for handwriting. Your note must include:

  1. A habitual action. Use 每天 with a time and a verb phrase.
  2. A shared fact. Use 都 to describe something true of two or more people.
  3. An added fact. Use 也 to add something true of a new subject.
  4. A negation. Use 不 for a general/habitual negative statement, or 没有 for something not possessed.

修改清单 — Editing checklist:

  • 每天 appears before the verb phrase, not after it.
  • 都 and 也 appear directly before the verb, after the subject.
  • 不 is used for habitual/general statements; 没有 is used for possession.
  • A Chinese period (。) or question mark (?) ends each sentence.

Speaking Practice

控制性练习 — Controlled practice: reading the model dialogue aloud

Read the model dialogue above aloud twice: once slowly, sounding out each tone, and once at a natural pace. Pay attention to the third-tone sandhi in 每晚-type words and the neutral tone in 休息.

交际任务 — Communicative task: comparing schedules

With a partner or small group, ask each other what time you get up, whether you work or study, and whether you exercise every day. Use 每天, 都, and 也 to summarize what you have in common.

独立练习 — Solo alternative

Record yourself describing your own daily routine in four or five sentences, then compare it to a friend's routine using 也 and 都. Listen back and check your adverb placement and third-tone sandhi.

Culture and Communication

Culture in Context — Talking about being busy

Describing oneself as 很忙 ("very busy") is a common, mild way to answer "how are you" in many everyday Mandarin conversations, without necessarily meaning a complaint. This tendency varies by relationship, setting, and region, so treat it as a general pattern rather than a fixed rule.

Culture in Context — Daily schedules and work/study balance

Typical daily schedules, including start times for work or class and attitudes toward rest, vary considerably across Mandarin-speaking regions, workplaces, and generations. Avoid assuming that any single schedule represents all Chinese-speaking communities.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Common Mistake — Placing 每天 after the verb

Error: Saying *我起床每天七点。

Correction: Time expressions come before the verb phrase: 我每天七点起床。 Review Grammar 7.3 and Chapter 4's time-before-verb rule.

Common Mistake — Using 都 to introduce a brand-new group

Error: Saying *都学生很忙。 to mean "All the students are busy," when no group has been mentioned yet.

Correction: Name the group first, then use 都 to sum it up: 学生都很忙。 Review Grammar 7.4.

Common Mistake — Confusing 不 and 没有

Error: Saying *我不有工作。 to mean "I don't have a job."

Correction: Possession is always negated with 没有, never 不有: 我没有工作。 Review Grammar 7.6 and Chapter 3's 有/没有 pattern.
