在哪儿?

Volume I, Chapter 8: Location and Places · Speak and Write Mandarin Chinese: Foundations of Practical Communication

Chapter Objectives

By the end of this chapter, you will be able to:

  1. Use 在 to say where a person or thing is located.
  2. Ask and answer location questions with 哪儿 and 哪里.
  3. Name common everyday places using productive vocabulary.
  4. Use 有 to say that something exists in a place.
  5. Use simple locative phrases such as 上面, 里面, and 旁边 to describe where something is.
  6. Describe the location of people, places, and objects in speech and in writing.

Communication Scenario

After comparing their daily routines in Chapter 7, Sarah, 大卫, and 小林 are trying to meet up between classes and work. They need to say where they are, ask where things are located, and describe what is near what.

  1. This chapter introduces 在, 哪儿/哪里, place vocabulary, 有 for existence, and simple locative phrases.
  2. Everything in this chapter builds on the identity, family, time, preference, and routine systems from Chapters 1-7.

Where This Chapter Fits

Chapter 8 continues Unit II. It introduces one tightly related cluster of new material — 在, 哪儿/哪里, place words, 有 for existence, and locative phrases — while continuing to recycle 每天, 都, 也, and the developing 不/没有 contrast from Chapter 7.

Coming Into This Chapter

Identity, 的, 有/没有 for possession, time-before-verb order, 每天, 都, 也, and the 不/没有 contrast from Chapters 1-7.

New in This Chapter

在 for location, 哪儿/哪里 questions, place vocabulary, 有 for existence, and locative phrases such as 上面, 里面, and 旁边.

Looking Forward

Chapter 9 continues Unit II with shopping and quantities, introducing prices, 个 and selected measure words, and 太...了.

生词 — Core Vocabulary

Core Vocabulary

All items above are productive: you are expected to recognize, type, and use them in the tasks below. No traditional-character forms or regional variants are introduced in this chapter.

Pronunciation Focus

8.1 Third-tone sandhi with 哪里 and 里面

Pronunciation Focus — 哪里 and 里面

哪 (nǎ, third tone) is followed by 里 (lǐ, also third tone). This is the same third-tone sandhi environment you practiced with 你好 in Chapter 1 and 每晚 in Chapter 7: the first third tone rises, producing náli in connected speech. The same rule applies inside 里面 whenever a third-tone syllable comes before it, as in 哪里面.

8.2 Neutral tone in 那儿 and 这儿

Pronunciation Focus — Erhua-influenced neutral tone

这儿 (zhèr) and 那儿 (nàr) use the 儿 ending as part of the standard word itself, not as an added regional feature. Pronounce them as single syllables with an r-colored vowel, rather than as two separate syllables. This is different from the neutral-tone words you learned in Chapter 7, such as 休息, where the second syllable is simply unstressed.

Continue to monitor 不 sandhi in this chapter's negative sentences, such as 不在 (bú zài, fourth tone changing to second tone before another fourth tone).

Grammar and Sentence Patterns

8.3 在 for location

Purpose: say where a person or thing is.

Language Building Block — [Subject] + 在 + [Place]
我在学校。
在 functions here as the main verb of the sentence, directly linking a subject to a place. It behaves differently from 是: use 在 to say where something is, not to identify what something is.
  • 莎拉在公司。 Shālā zài gōngsī. Sarah is at the company.
  • 我们不在家。 Wǒmen bú zài jiā. We are not at home.

Negate location with 不, following the same habitual/general negation pattern you learned in Chapter 7's Grammar 7.6.

8.4 Asking where with 哪儿 and 哪里

Purpose: ask about the location of a person, place, or thing.

Language Building Block — [Subject] + 在 + 哪儿/哪里?
图书馆在哪儿?
哪儿 and 哪里 both mean "where" and are largely interchangeable in this chapter. Like other question words you learned in earlier chapters, 哪儿/哪里 stays in the position where the answer would go — it does not move to the front of the sentence.
  • 你在哪儿? Nǐ zài nǎr? Where are you?
  • 大卫在哪里工作? Dàwèi zài nǎli gōngzuò? Where does David work?

In the second example, 在哪里 comes before the verb 工作, following the same place-before-verb order introduced in this chapter.

8.5 有 for existence

Purpose: say that something exists in a place.

Language Building Block — [Place] + 有 + [Thing]
桌子上有一本书。
When a place phrase begins the sentence, 有 introduces something that exists there. This is a different function from the possession use of 有 you learned in Chapter 3 (我有一个弟弟), even though it is the same word. Here, the sentence describes a place, not a person, as having something.
  • 学校里面有图书馆。 Xuéxiào lǐmiàn yǒu túshūguǎn. There is a library inside the school.

Do not confuse this pattern with 在: use 在 when the known thing is the subject (图书馆在学校里面), and use 有 when the known place is the subject and you are introducing something new (学校里面有图书馆).

8.6 Locative phrases: 上面, 里面, 旁边

Purpose: describe the position of something relative to another place or object.

Language Building Block — [Place/Object] + 上面/里面/旁边
书在桌子上面。
Locative words such as 上面 (on top of), 里面 (inside), and 旁边 (next to) follow the noun they describe, forming a place phrase that can then be used with 在 or 有.
  • 图书馆在学校旁边。 Túshūguǎn zài xuéxiào pángbiān. The library is next to the school.
  • 桌子上面有一本书。 Zhuōzi shàngmiàn yǒu yì běn shū. There is a book on the table.

This chapter limits locative phrases to 上面, 里面, and 旁边. Additional locative words are introduced in later chapters as directions and travel systems develop.

Model Dialogue

Setting: Sarah calls 小林 to find out where everyone is before meeting up.

莎拉 喂,你在哪儿? Wéi, nǐ zài nǎr? Hello, where are you?
小林 我在图书馆里面。图书馆在学校旁边。 Wǒ zài túshūguǎn lǐmiàn. Túshūguǎn zài xuéxiào pángbiān. I'm inside the library. The library is next to the school.
莎拉 大卫呢?他也在图书馆吗? Dàwèi ne? Tā yě zài túshūguǎn ma? What about David? Is he also at the library?
小林 不,他不在这儿,他在公司工作。 Bù, tā bú zài zhèr, tā zài gōngsī gōngzuò. No, he's not here, he's working at the company.
莎拉 好,我也去图书馆。图书馆里面有咖啡吗? Hǎo, wǒ yě qù túshūguǎn. Túshūguǎn lǐmiàn yǒu kāfēi ma? Okay, I'll go to the library too. Is there coffee inside the library?
小林 有,图书馆旁边也有咖啡馆。 Yǒu, túshūguǎn pángbiān yě yǒu kāfēiguǎn. Yes, and there's also a café next to the library.

理解问题 — Comprehension questions:

  1. 小林在哪儿? (Where is Xiao Lin?)
  2. 大卫在哪儿?他做什么? (Where is David? What is he doing?)

Listening Practice

Ask your instructor, a study partner, or a fluent Mandarin speaker to read the passage below aloud twice, at a natural pace. Complete the table using only what you have studied through Chapter 8.

If no speaker is available, this is a Listening Script for Independent Use. Read the passage aloud yourself, slowly at first, then at a more natural pace. Any spoken model should be verified by a fluent Mandarin speaker before being treated as a pronunciation standard.

我们的学校 — Our school:
"我的学校很大。图书馆在学校里面,图书馆旁边有一个咖啡馆。我每天都在图书馆学习。桌子上有我的书。我的朋友马克不在图书馆,他在公司工作,公司在学校旁边。"

听力任务 — Listening task:

QuestionAnswer
图书馆在哪儿? (Where is the library?)______
图书馆旁边有什么? (What is next to the library?)______
马克在哪儿? (Where is Mark?)______

Reading Practice

Read the short note below and answer the comprehension questions.

我的家 — My Home
大家好!我是大卫。我家在公司旁边,我每天走路上班。我家里面有一张桌子,桌子上面有我的书。我的学校不在这儿,我的学校在城市里面。莎拉的家也在公司旁边,我们都不常在家,可是我们都喜欢我们的家。
Hello everyone! I am David. My home is next to the company, and I walk to work every day. Inside my home there is a table, and on the table there are my books. My school is not here — my school is in the city. Sarah's home is also next to the company; we are both rarely at home, but we both like our homes.

理解问题 — Comprehension questions:

  1. 大卫的家在哪儿? (Where is David's home?)
  2. 桌子上面有什么? (What is on the table?)

Writing Workshop

Write a short note describing where you and one other person are, and what is near or inside those places, following the models above. Use only vocabulary, characters, and grammar from Chapters 1-8.

写作任务 — Writing task: Write five or six sentences in simplified characters, typing them with Pinyin input if possible, or copying/handwriting the characters you have already been assigned for handwriting. Your note must include:

  1. A location statement. Use 在 to say where you are.
  2. A location question and answer. Use 哪儿 or 哪里.
  3. An existence statement. Use 有 to say what exists in a place.
  4. A locative phrase. Use 上面, 里面, or 旁边.

修改清单 — Editing checklist:

  • 在 is used to say where something is, not to identify what it is.
  • 有 is used with a place phrase first, to introduce something new in that place.
  • Locative words such as 上面, 里面, and 旁边 follow the noun they describe.
  • A Chinese period (。) or question mark (?) ends each sentence.

Speaking Practice

控制性练习 — Controlled practice: reading the model dialogue aloud

Read the model dialogue above aloud twice: once slowly, sounding out each tone, and once at a natural pace. Pay attention to the third-tone sandhi in 哪里 and the single-syllable pronunciation of 这儿 and 那儿.

交际任务 — Communicative task: finding each other

With a partner or small group, ask each other where you are right now, describe what is near or inside that place, and say whether you are ever at each other's location using 也 and 都.

独立练习 — Solo alternative

Record yourself describing where three familiar places are located relative to each other, using 在, 有, and at least one locative phrase. Listen back and check your third-tone sandhi and word order.

Culture and Communication

Culture in Context — Giving directions and locations

When describing where a place is, many Mandarin speakers give the relative position first (such as 旁边 or 里面) before naming a well-known landmark, rather than relying only on street addresses. Practice matters, and this tendency is common rather than universal.

Culture in Context — Libraries and study spaces

School and public libraries serve as common study spaces across many Mandarin-speaking regions, though their hours, layout, and rules vary by institution, city, and country. Avoid assuming that any single description applies to all schools or all Chinese-speaking communities.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Common Mistake — Confusing 在 and 有

Error: Saying *图书馆有学校旁边。 to mean "The library is next to the school."

Correction: Use 在 when the known thing is the subject: 图书馆在学校旁边。 Save 有 for introducing something new in a place: 学校旁边有图书馆。 Review Grammar 8.3 and 8.5.

Common Mistake — Placing the locative word before the noun

Error: Saying *上面桌子有一本书。

Correction: Locative words follow the noun they describe: 桌子上面有一本书。 Review Grammar 8.6.

Common Mistake — Moving 哪儿 to the front of the sentence

Error: Saying *哪儿你在? by analogy with English "Where are you?"

Correction: Mandarin question words stay in the position where the answer would go: 你在哪儿? Review Grammar 8.4.

Chapter Review

Unit II Recognition Check

Say each of the following aloud and confirm accurate tones, including third-tone sandhi where relevant: 你在哪儿, 图书馆在学校旁边, 桌子上面有一本书, 他不在这儿. If any of these feel uncertain, review this chapter before moving on.

Practical Performance Task

Chapter 8 Performance Task

Finding People and Places

  1. Listen to the school passage, or a similar passage read by your instructor or partner, and complete the listening table above.
  2. Read David's note and answer the comprehension questions.
  3. Write your own note about where you and someone else are, following the Writing Workshop steps and editing checklist.
  4. Speak a complete location exchange with a partner, recording, or instructor, without reading from a script.
CriterionWhat is assessed
Location with 在在 is used correctly to say where a person or thing is.
Questions with 哪儿/哪里Location questions keep the question word in the correct position.
Existence with 有有 is used correctly to introduce something new in a named place.
Locative phrases上面, 里面, and 旁边 are placed correctly after the noun.
PronunciationThird-tone sandhi in 哪里 and the pronunciation of 这儿/那儿 are produced with reasonable, intelligible accuracy.

This task assesses only what Chapters 1-8 have taught. It does not require anything beyond the systems scheduled for this point in Unit II.
