你会说中文吗?

Volume I, Chapter 11: Ability and Communication · Speak and Write Mandarin Chinese: Foundations of Practical Communication

Chapter Overview and Learning Objectives

Unit III opens with a question every language learner eventually has to answer: what can you actually do in the language you are learning? This chapter teaches you to talk about ability, permission, and possibility using 会, 能, and 可以, to ask how something is done with 怎么, and to keep a conversation going with simple repair phrases when you don't understand or can't remember a word.

By the end of this chapter, you will be able to:

  1. Ask and answer whether someone can do something using 会.
  2. Distinguish 会 (learned skill), 能 (ability/circumstance), and 可以 (permission/possibility).
  3. Ask how to do or say something using 怎么.
  4. Use basic repair phrases to ask someone to repeat, speak more slowly, or explain a word.
  5. Combine ability, permission, and repair language with the identity, family, time, food, routine, location, and shopping systems from Chapters 1-9.

Communication Scenario

莎拉, 大卫, and 小林 are planning a small language exchange evening at school. Before the event, they need to find out who can speak which languages, who can help with what, and how to ask politely when something is unclear.

  1. You will listen to and read short exchanges about ability and permission.
  2. You will learn to ask "how do you say/do this?" and to signal politely when you need help following a conversation.
  3. Everything in this chapter builds directly on the identity, family, time, food, routine, location, and shopping language from Unit II.

Where This Chapter Fits

Chapter 11 opens Unit III. It is the first chapter to introduce new productive grammar since Chapter 9, since Chapter 10 was a review-only assessment chapter. This chapter adds a new communicative domain — ability and communication — while continuing to recycle everything from Chapters 1-9.

Coming Into This Chapter

Identity and greetings (Ch. 1-2), family and possession (Ch. 3), numbers, dates, and time (Ch. 4), food and drink preferences (Ch. 6), daily routines (Ch. 7), location with 在 (Ch. 8), and shopping and quantities (Ch. 9), all reviewed and assessed together in Chapter 10.

New in This Chapter

会, 能, and 可以 for ability, capability, and permission; 怎么 for asking how; and repair phrases for real conversation.

Looking Forward

Chapter 12 uses these tools immediately, combining ability language with movement verbs to ask for and give directions across the city.

Core Vocabulary

These words are productive: you should be able to recognize, type, and use them in the tasks below. Neutral-tone syllables are marked with no tone mark, following standard Pinyin convention.

Receptive only, glossed in context: 语言交流会 (yǔyán jiāoliú huì, "language exchange event") appears in this chapter's scenario for cultural context. You are not required to produce it independently.

发音 — Pronunciation Focus

Pronunciation and Listening Focus

This chapter reinforces tones you already know and adds one new listening skill: recognizing the aspirated/unaspirated contrast in a pair of frequent syllables you will now use often.

  • 会 (huì, 4th tone) vs 能 (néng, 2nd tone) vs 可以 (kěyǐ, 3rd + 3rd, becoming 2nd + 3rd in connected speech). Listen for these three distinct contours; confusing them changes meaning, not just pronunciation.
  • 可以 third-tone sandhi: two third-tone syllables in a row — the first (可) is pronounced as a rising (second) tone before the second third-tone syllable (以). Say it as ké-yǐ, not kě-yǐ.
  • 怎么 (zěnme): the second syllable is neutral tone — short and light, with no tone mark.
  • 请 (qǐng) vs 情/清 family: practice the aspirated q sound, distinct from English "ch" or "k."

Repeat each modal verb and the repair phrases aloud at least five times before moving to the dialogue below, focusing on tone accuracy rather than speed.

语法 — Grammar and Sentence Patterns

Grammar and Sentence Patterns

会, 能, and 可以: three different kinds of "can"

Mandarin does not have one all-purpose word for "can." Instead, three modal verbs cover different meanings. All three appear directly before the main verb.

ModalCore meaningTypical useExample
会can, know how toa learned skill acquired through study or practice我会说一点儿中文。 I can speak a little Chinese (I've learned it).
能can, be able tophysical ability or circumstances allow it我今天很忙,不能去。 I'm busy today, I can't go.
可以can, maypermission is granted, or something is possible/allowed你可以用我的书。 You can/may use my book.

In many everyday situations, native speakers accept some overlap between 能 and 可以. For this chapter, use 会 only for learned skills (languages, instruments, driving), and use 能 or 可以 for circumstances or permission. Do not treat the three as fully interchangeable synonyms of English "can."

Pattern: Subject + 会/能/可以 + Verb (+ Object)

你会说中文吗? Nǐ huì shuō Zhōngwén ma? Can you speak Chinese?

我会一点儿。 Wǒ huì yìdiǎnr. I can (do it) a little.

怎么 — asking how

怎么 asks about method or manner and, like other question words in Mandarin, stays in the position where the answer would go — it does not move to the front of the sentence.

Pattern: Subject + 怎么 + Verb (+ Object) + 吗/呢?

这个字怎么写? Zhège zì zěnme xiě? How do you write this character?

"谢谢"怎么说英文? "Xièxie" zěnme shuō Yīngwén? How do you say "xièxie" in English?

Repair phrases for real conversation

You will not always catch every word. These formulaic phrases let you stay in the conversation instead of stopping it.

ChinesePinyinFunction
对不起,我不懂。Duìbuqǐ, wǒ bù dǒng.Sorry, I don't understand.
请再说一次。Qǐng zài shuō yí cì.Please say it again.
请慢一点儿说。Qǐng màn yìdiǎnr shuō.Please speak a little more slowly.
这是什么意思?Zhè shì shénme yìsi?What does this mean?
"……"中文怎么说?"……" Zhōngwén zěnme shuō?How do you say "…" in Chinese?

These are treated as formulaic expressions in this chapter. You may use them fully before analyzing every internal grammar point — but note that they already use structures you know: 请 + verb, 再 + verb + 一次, and the 怎么 pattern above.

对话 — Model Dialogue

Model Dialogue

在语言交流会上 — At the Language Exchange:

Gloss: Xiao Lin asks Anna whether she can speak Chinese; Anna says she can speak a little, but slowly, and asks Xiao Lin to slow down. Xiao Lin agrees and asks whether Anna speaks English. Anna confirms she is American and asks the same back. When Xiao Lin doesn't understand a word Anna just used, he asks what it means and how to say "exchange" in Chinese; Anna teaches him 交流, and he confirms he now understands.

Listening Practice

Ask a partner, instructor, or fluent speaker to read the passage below aloud twice at a natural pace before answering.

If no speaker is available, this is a Listening Script for Independent Use. Read it aloud yourself, slowly at first, then at a natural pace. Any spoken model should be verified by a fluent Mandarin speaker before being treated as a pronunciation standard.

大卫会做什么 — What David Can Do:
大卫会说中文,也会说英文,可是他不会说法文。他会打篮球,可是他不会打网球。今天大卫很忙,他不能去图书馆,可是他可以明天去。他说:"对不起,我今天不能帮你,可是我明天可以帮你,可以吗?"

听力任务 — Listening task:

QuestionAnswer
大卫会说什么语言? (What languages can David speak?)______
大卫会打篮球吗?会打网球吗? (Can David play basketball? Tennis?)______
大卫今天能去图书馆吗?为什么? (Can David go to the library today? Why/why not?)______

Reading Practice

Read the short message below and answer the comprehension questions.

莎拉给小林的短信 — Sarah's Message to Xiao Lin
小林,你好!明天的语言交流会,我可以帮你买东西,可是我不会做饭,所以我不能做中国菜。你会做中国菜吗?还有,我不懂"交流会"这三个字里的"流"字怎么写,你可以教我吗?谢谢你!
Hi Xiao Lin! For tomorrow's language exchange, I can help you buy things, but I don't know how to cook, so I can't make Chinese food. Can you make Chinese food? Also, I don't understand how to write the character "流" in "交流会" — can you teach me? Thank you!

理解问题 — Comprehension questions:

  1. 莎拉可以帮小林做什么? (What can Sarah help Xiao Lin with?)
  2. 莎拉会做中国菜吗?为什么? (Can Sarah make Chinese food? Why/why not?)
  3. 莎拉想请小林教她什么? (What does Sarah want Xiao Lin to teach her?)

Writing Workshop

Write a short exchange of five to seven sentences about ability and permission, using only vocabulary and grammar from Chapters 1-11.

写作任务 — Writing task: Type your sentences with Pinyin input if possible, or copy/handwrite the characters you have already been assigned for handwriting. Your writing must include:

  1. A skill statement. Say what you can or cannot do using 会.
  2. A circumstance statement. Say what you can or cannot do today using 能.
  3. A permission question. Ask permission for something using 可以.
  4. A "how" question. Ask how to do or say something using 怎么.
  5. A repair phrase. Include at least one phrase for asking someone to repeat or slow down.

修改清单 — Editing checklist:

  • 会, 能, and 可以 are not used interchangeably without regard to meaning.
  • The modal verb comes directly before the main verb, not after.
  • 怎么 stays in the position where the answer would go.
  • A Chinese period (。) or question mark (?) ends each sentence.

Speaking Practice

控制性练习 — Controlled practice: guided interview

With a partner, take turns asking and answering: 你会说中文吗?你会做什么菜?你今天能不能去图书馆?我可以看你的书吗?"谢谢"英文怎么说?

交际任务 — Communicative task: language exchange role-play

With a partner, role-play meeting someone new at a language exchange. Ask what languages they can speak, ask them to slow down at least once, and ask how to say one word you choose in Chinese or English.

独立练习 — Solo alternative

Record yourself describing three things you can do (会), one thing you can't do today (不能), and one permission question. Listen back and check your modal-verb tones and the 可以 sandhi.

Culture and Communication

Culture Note — Asking for repetition politely

In many Mandarin-speaking learning and workplace contexts, asking someone to repeat or slow down is considered a normal, expected part of conversation rather than an admission of failure. Opening with 对不起 or 不好意思 before a repair request is common and signals politeness rather than weakness. This pattern is common in many classroom and service settings; it is not universal across every context or speaker, and directness norms vary by relationship and region.

Common Mistakes

  • Using 会 for temporary circumstances: *我今天会去,因为我很忙 is incorrect logic — busyness is a circumstance, not a lack of skill. Use 能: 我今天不能去,因为我很忙。
  • Placing 怎么 at the front of the sentence by analogy with English: avoid *怎么你去学校?. Keep it before the verb: 你怎么去学校? (How do you get to school?)
  • Mispronouncing 可以 as kě-yǐ instead of ké-yǐ: remember third-tone sandhi applies here just as it does in 你好.
  • Treating repair phrases as rude: 请再说一次 is polite and expected, not an interruption.

Chapter Review
