去图书馆怎么走?

Volume I, Chapter 12: Directions and Movement · Speak and Write Mandarin Chinese: Foundations of Practical Communication

Chapter Overview and Learning Objectives

Now that you can talk about ability, permission, and communication repair, it's time to put those tools to use getting around the city. This chapter teaches you to describe movement with 去, 来, 走, and 坐; to mark a route from one point to another with 从...到...; to link two actions in sequence the way Mandarin naturally does, without a word for "and then"; and to read and give simple directions using common map and street vocabulary.

By the end of this chapter, you will be able to:

  1. Use 去 and 来 correctly to describe going and coming.
  2. Use 走 and 坐 to describe walking somewhere versus taking a form of transportation.
  3. Mark a route's starting point and destination using 从...到....
  4. Link two actions in a single sentence using a serial verb sequence, without an extra connecting word.
  5. Read and produce simple map labels and directions, and ask 怎么走 to request directions.
  6. Combine directions and movement with the ability, permission, and repair language from Chapter 11 and the identity, family, time, food, routine, location, and shopping systems from Unit II.

Communication Scenario

安娜 is new to the neighborhood near school. She needs to find the library, the bus stop, and a coffee shop before the language exchange event, and she keeps asking 小林 and 大卫 how to get places.

  1. You will listen to and read short exchanges about giving and asking for directions.
  2. You will learn to describe a route from one place to another and to link two actions, like walking somewhere and then turning.
  3. Everything in this chapter builds directly on the ability, permission, and repair language from Chapter 11 and the location language from Chapter 8.

Where This Chapter Fits

Chapter 12 continues Unit III, building immediately on Chapter 11. This chapter adds a new communicative domain — directions and movement — while continuing to recycle ability, permission, repair phrases, and the location system from Chapter 8.

Coming Into This Chapter

Ability and permission with 会/能/可以, asking 怎么, and repair phrases (Ch. 11); location with 在 and existence with 有 (Ch. 8); and all Unit II systems, reviewed together in Chapter 10.

New in This Chapter

去/来/走/坐 for movement; 从...到... for marking a route; serial verb sequences for linking two actions; and map and street labels.

Looking Forward

Chapter 13 shifts from getting around the city to describing ongoing study and work, using 在/正在 and an expanded 的.

Recycled from Chapter 8: 在, 前面, 后面, 旁边. Receptive only, glossed in context: 十字路口 (shízì lùkǒu, "intersection") appears in the reading passage below for authenticity. You are not required to produce it independently.

发音 — Pronunciation Focus

Pronunciation and Listening Focus

This chapter continues tone-pair practice with several very common movement verbs, and adds one new listening target: distinguishing 4th-tone syllables that occur back-to-back.

  • 去 (qù, 4th tone) followed by another 4th-tone word — as in 去图书馆 — does not soften the way third tones do. Keep both falling tones clear and separate; do not let the second one collapse into the first.
  • 走 (zǒu, 3rd tone) vs 坐 (zuò, 4th tone): these two verbs are easy to confuse for beginners because both involve a similar vowel shape. Practice them in minimal contrast: zǒu (dipping) vs zuò (falling).
  • 从 (cóng) vs 走 (zǒu): practice the difference between the "c" affricate and the "z" affricate — both are unaspirated, but "c" pairs with a different vowel shape here.
  • 一直 (yìzhí): both syllables are 4th and 2nd tone respectively — make sure the falling yì does not bleed into a flat zhí.

Practice the model dialogue below aloud at least three times, paying special attention to keeping 去, 到, and 一直 as clear, distinct falling tones rather than letting them blur together in a fast string of directions.

语法 — Grammar and Sentence Patterns

Grammar and Sentence Patterns

去, 来, 走, and 坐: four ways to talk about movement

Mandarin distinguishes direction (going versus coming) from manner (walking versus riding). These four verbs are often combined with each other rather than used alone.

VerbCore meaningTypical useExample
去to go (away from speaker's reference point)heading toward a destination我去图书馆。 I'm going to the library.
来to come (toward speaker's reference point)heading toward where the speaker is or will be你可以来我家。 You can come to my place.
走to walk, to travel on footdescribing walking as the manner of movement我走去学校。 I walk to school.
坐to sit; to ride/take (a vehicle)describing riding as the manner of movement我坐地铁去。 I take the subway there.

走 and 坐 describe *how* you get somewhere; 去 and 来 describe *direction*. Mandarin often links them together in a single sentence, which brings us to serial verbs.

Serial verb sequences: linking two actions without an extra word

Mandarin frequently places two verbs (or a verb phrase and a movement verb) next to each other in one sentence to describe a single connected action. There is no separate word required for "and" or "and then" in this pattern.

Pattern: Subject + (Manner Verb) + (Destination) + 去/来

我走去图书馆。 Wǒ zǒu qù túshūguǎn. I walk to the library. (literally: I walk go library)

我坐公共汽车去学校。 Wǒ zuò gōnggòng qìchē qù xuéxiào. I take the bus to school.

This is a controlled introduction to serial verb sequences. In this chapter, practice only the pattern above: a manner verb (走 or 坐 + vehicle), optionally a destination, and 去 or 来. Do not attempt more complex serial verb chains yet — those are developed further in later chapters.

从...到...: marking a route

从 marks a starting point and 到 marks a destination. They are typically used together to describe a route or a distance.

Pattern: 从 + Starting Point + 到 + Destination + (Description)

从这儿到图书馆很近。 Cóng zhèr dào túshūguǎn hěn jìn. From here to the library is very close.

从学校到图书馆怎么走? Cóng xuéxiào dào túshūguǎn zěnme zǒu? How do you get from school to the library?

Asking and giving directions with 怎么走

Recall 怎么 from Chapter 11. Combined with 走, it becomes the standard way to ask for directions.

Pattern: (从...到...) + Place + 怎么走?

图书馆怎么走? Túshūguǎn zěnme zǒu? How do I get to the library?

Giving directions typically uses a short sequence: 一直走 (go straight), 往左/右拐弯 (turn left/right), and location phrases you already know from Chapter 8, such as 在...旁边 or 在...前面.

你一直走,到红绿灯往左拐弯,图书馆就在你旁边。 Nǐ yìzhí zǒu, dào hónglǜdēng wǎng zuǒ guǎi wān, túshūguǎn jiù zài nǐ pángbiān. Go straight, turn left at the traffic light, and the library will be right next to you.

就 appears here as a formulaic intensifier meaning roughly "right/precisely." You may use this expression as a fixed pattern; its full grammar is not analyzed until a later volume.

对话 — Model Dialogue

Model Dialogue

去图书馆 — Going to the Library:

Gloss: Anna asks Xiao Lin how to get to the library. He explains it's close: go straight, turn left at the traffic light, and it will be right next to her. She asks whether she can walk or should take the bus; he says walking is fine and actually faster. She then asks if he's going to the library today; he says he's going this afternoon and invites her to come study together. She agrees and asks what time; he tells her to come at three o'clock, where he'll be waiting.

Listening Practice

Ask a partner, instructor, or fluent speaker to read the passage below aloud twice at a natural pace before answering.

If no speaker is available, this is a Listening Script for Independent Use. Read it aloud yourself, slowly at first, then at a natural pace. Any spoken model should be verified by a fluent Mandarin speaker before being treated as a pronunciation standard.

大卫怎么去学校 — How David Gets to School:
大卫家离学校不远,可是他不走去,他坐公共汽车去。从他家到学校坐公共汽车只要十五分钟。他说:「我可以走去,可是坐公共汽车更快,也更容易。」他每天早上七点半坐公共汽车去学校,下午四点坐公共汽车回家。

听力任务 — Listening task:

QuestionAnswer
大卫怎么去学校? (How does David get to school?)______
从他家到学校坐公共汽车要多长时间? (How long does the bus take from his house to school?)______
大卫几点坐公共汽车去学校?几点回家? (What time does he take the bus to school? What time does he go home?)______

Reading Practice

Read the short message below and answer the comprehension questions.

大卫给安娜的短信 — David's Message to Anna
安娜,你好!你问的咖啡店,从图书馆到那儿很近。你从图书馆出来,一直走,过一个十字路口,往右拐弯,咖啡店就在你左边,在一个书店的旁边。你可以走去,也可以坐地铁,可是走去比较快,只要五分钟。
Hi Anna! About the coffee shop you asked about — it's very close from the library. Come out of the library, go straight, pass one intersection, turn right, and the coffee shop will be on your left, next to a bookstore. You can walk there, or take the subway, but walking is faster — it only takes five minutes.

理解问题 — Comprehension questions:

  1. 咖啡店从图书馆怎么走? (How do you get to the coffee shop from the library?)
  2. 咖啡店在哪儿? (Where is the coffee shop, relative to other places?)
  3. 走去咖啡店要多长时间? (How long does it take to walk to the coffee shop?)

Writing Workshop

Write a short set of directions of five to seven sentences, using only vocabulary and grammar from Chapters 1-12.

写作任务 — Writing task: Type your sentences with Pinyin input if possible, or copy/handwrite the characters you have already been assigned for handwriting. Your writing must include:

  1. A route marker. Use 从...到... to describe a route between two real or invented places.
  2. A manner-of-movement statement. Say whether you walk or take a form of transportation, using 走 or 坐.
  3. A serial verb sequence. Combine a manner verb with 去 or 来 in one sentence.
  4. A direction-asking question. Ask 怎么走 about a place.
  5. At least one map label or direction word, such as 一直, 左边, 右边, or 拐弯.

修改清单 — Editing checklist:

  • 从 and 到 are both included when marking a route, not just one.
  • The manner verb (走/坐) comes before 去/来, not after.
  • 怎么 stays in the position where the answer would go, as practiced in Chapter 11.
  • A Chinese period (。) or question mark (?) ends each sentence.

Speaking Practice

控制性练习 — Controlled practice: guided interview

With a partner, take turns asking and answering: 图书馆怎么走?你走去学校还是坐公共汽车?从你家到学校远不远?你可以来我家吗?你几点来?

交际任务 — Communicative task: giving directions role-play

With a partner, role-play one person asking for directions to a place near your school (real or invented) and the other giving directions using 一直走, 拐弯, and location language from Chapter 8.

独立练习 — Solo alternative

Record yourself describing how you get from your home to one place you go often, including the manner of travel, an estimate of time or distance, and at least one turn or landmark.

Culture and Communication

Culture Note — Giving directions in everyday conversation

In many Mandarin-speaking urban settings, people commonly describe distance in terms of walking or riding time rather than exact measurements, as in the reading passage above. Landmarks such as intersections, traffic lights, and well-known shops or stores are frequently used as reference points instead of formal addresses. This pattern is common in many everyday conversations; it is not universal, and practices vary by city, region, and speaker.

Common Mistakes

  • Reversing the manner-verb and 去/来 order: avoid *我去走学校. The manner verb comes first: 我走去学校。
  • Confusing 去 and 来: 来 is used only when movement is toward the speaker's location (or a shared reference point); use 去 for movement away from that point. 你可以来我家 is correct because "my home" is the speaker's reference point; *你可以去我家 sounds as if the speaker is not there.
  • Dropping 从 or 到: avoid *这儿到图书馆很近 without 从. Mandarin marks both ends of the route: 从这儿到图书馆很近。
  • Placing 怎么走 at the front of the sentence: keep the same word-order pattern from Chapter 11 — 图书馆怎么走?, not *怎么走图书馆?
