我去过北京

Volume I, Chapter 17: Experience and Travel · Speak and Write Mandarin Chinese: Foundations of Practical Communication

Chapter Overview and Learning Objectives

In Chapter 16, you learned to narrate what you did on a particular day using perfective 了. This chapter introduces a different way of talking about the past: describing life experiences without tying them to one specific occasion. Experiential 过 lets you say that you have ever done something — visited a place, tried a food, seen a film — regardless of when. You will also learn 还 and 再 for talking about what you have not yet done and what you would like to do again, and you will practice 到 as a way of expressing arrival at a destination.

By the end of this chapter, you will be able to:

  1. Ask and answer whether someone has ever done something using experiential 过.
  2. Negate an experience with 没(有)...过, distinguishing it from perfective 了 negation.
  3. Use 次 to say how many times you have done something.
  4. Use 还 to say something has not happened yet, and 再 to say you want to do something again.
  5. Use 到 to talk about arriving at or reaching a destination.
  6. Read and interpret simple travel signage and a short travel narrative.
  7. Distinguish experiential 过 (have you ever...) from perfective 了 (what did you do on a specific occasion), which you already met in Chapter 16.

Communication Scenario

安娜 has finished her work report and is thinking about her next vacation. 大卫 mentions that his cousin just came back from China, which starts a conversation about places they have and have not been. 安娜 is especially curious about Beijing and the Great Wall.

  1. You will hear and read 安娜 and 大卫 talking about travel experiences using experiential 过.
  2. You will practice asking a partner about places they have or have not visited.
  3. You will write a short passage about a place you have been, using 过, 还, and 再.
生词 — Core Vocabulary

Grammar words used in the examples above — 了, 也, 想, measure words, and question words — were introduced in Chapters 1-16 and are reviewed, not retaught, here.

发音重点 — Pronunciation Focus

Pronunciation Focus

This chapter introduces no new sounds or tone rules. Use the items below to review tone contrasts that come up often in this chapter's vocabulary.

  • The two third tones in 旅游 (lǚyóu) — remember that the second syllable is actually a rising second tone, not a full third tone, so this is not a third-tone sandhi case.
  • The neutral, unstressed pronunciation of experiential 过 (guo) — like perfective 了, it is light and never emphasized in normal speech.
  • Distinguishing 还 (hái), rising second tone, from 孩 (hái)-sounding words you may know from other contexts — context, not tone, usually tells them apart here since both carry second tone; listen for the surrounding sentence.
  • The falling tone of 再 (zài) compared with the falling tone of 在 (zài) — these are different words with the same sound; rely on sentence position and meaning to tell them apart.
语法 — Grammar and Sentence Patterns

Grammar and Sentence Patterns

Subject + Verb + 过 (+ Object) — experiential aspect, marking a past experience

我去过北京。 Wǒ qùguo Běijīng. I have been to Beijing (at some point).

Experiential 过 tells the listener that an action has happened at least once at some unspecified time in the past. It does not say when, and it does not focus on a single completed occasion the way perfective 了 does.

没(有) + Verb + 过 (+ Object) — negating an experience

我没去过上海。 Wǒ méi qùguo Shànghǎi. I have never been to Shanghai.

Unlike perfective 了, which disappears in the negative, experiential 过 stays in the sentence when negated with 没 or 没有. Do not use 不 here.

Verb + 过 + Number + 次 (+ Object) — saying how many times

我去过两次北京。 Wǒ qùguo liǎng cì Běijīng. I have been to Beijing twice.

次 is a measure word for occurrences. It normally comes after 过 and before a place-name object.

还没(有) + Verb + 过 — not yet, up to now

我还没去过长城。 Wǒ hái méi qùguo Chángchéng. I still haven't been to the Great Wall.

还 before a negative sentence signals "not yet" rather than a flat "not." It implies the action may still happen in the future.

再 + Verb (+ 一 + 次) — doing something again

我想再去一次北京。 Wǒ xiǎng zài qù yí cì Běijīng. I want to go to Beijing again.

再 comes directly before the verb it modifies and usually pairs with a modal such as 想 or 要 when talking about a future repeat action.

Verb + 到 (+ Destination) — arriving at a place

我们到了北京。 Wǒmen dào le Běijīng. We arrived in Beijing.

到 can function as a verb meaning "to arrive" and can also attach to certain verbs as a result complement meaning the action reached its goal, as in 找到 (to find, literally "search and reach"). This chapter focuses on 到 as a destination verb.

Language Note — 过 versus 了

Both 过 and perfective 了, which you learned in Chapter 16, look back at the past, but they answer different questions. Perfective 了 answers "what happened" on a specific occasion: 昨天我去了北京 (Yesterday I went to Beijing — a single trip). Experiential 过 answers "have you ever" without pointing to one occasion: 我去过北京 (I have been to Beijing — at some point, possibly more than once). The two can even combine in more advanced sentences, but for now, focus on choosing the one that matches the question being asked.

对话 — Model Dialogue

Model Dialogue

大卫和安娜 — David and Anna:
大卫:安娜,我表弟上个星期从中国回来了。他去过北京和上海。
安娜:真的吗?我也去过北京!我去过两次。
大卫:你去过长城吗?
安娜:去过!长城很大,也很有名。你呢?你去过中国吗?
大卫:还没有,我还没去过中国,可是我想去。
安娜:你应该去!我想再去一次北京,也想去上海看看。
大卫:那我们可以一起计划一下!

Notice how 安娜 uses 过 to talk about her experiences without saying exactly when, while 大卫 uses 还没 to say what he has not yet done.

练习 — Guided Practice

Guided Practice

练习一 — Exercise 1: Add 过 in the correct position to show experience.

  1. 我_去_长城。 (I have been to the Great Wall.)
  2. 她_吃_中国菜吗? (Has she ever eaten Chinese food?)
  3. 我们_看_这个电影。 (We have seen this movie.)

练习二 — Exercise 2: Rewrite each sentence in the negative, using 没(有)...过.

  1. 我去过日本。 → ______
  2. 他吃过这个菜。 → ______
  3. 我们看过这本书。 → ______

练习三 — Exercise 3: Choose 还 or 再 to complete each sentence.

  1. 我_没去过北京。 (I still haven't been to Beijing.)
  2. 我想_去一次长城。 (I want to go to the Great Wall again.)

Listening Practice

Ask a partner, instructor, or fluent speaker to read the passage below aloud twice at a natural pace before answering.

If no speaker is available, this is a Listening Script for Independent Use. Read it aloud yourself, slowly at first, then at a natural pace. Any spoken model should be verified by a fluent Mandarin speaker before being treated as a pronunciation standard.

安娜的旅游经历 — Anna's Travel Experience:
安娜去过两次北京。第一次,她去了长城,也参观了很多地方。第二次,她跟朋友一起去的,玩儿了一个星期。安娜还没去过上海,可是她很想去。她说:「我想再去一次中国,这次我想去上海。」大卫还没出过国,可是他也很想去中国旅游。

听力任务 — Listening task:

QuestionAnswer
安娜去过几次北京? (How many times has Anna been to Beijing?)______
安娜去过上海吗? (Has Anna been to Shanghai?)______
大卫出过国吗? (Has David been abroad?)______

Speaking Practice

控制性练习 — Controlled practice: guided interview

With a partner, take turns asking and answering: 你去过中国吗?你去过长城吗?你去过几次?你还没去过什么地方?

交际任务 — Communicative task: travel experiences

Interview a partner about places they have and have not visited. Ask about at least three places, using 过, 还没, and 次 at least once each, then retell what you learned to the class or another partner.

独立练习 — Solo alternative

Record yourself talking about two or three places you have been, one place you have not yet been, and one place you would like to visit again, using 过, 还, and 再.

Reading Practice

Read the short passage and signs below, then answer the comprehension questions.

欢迎来长城!请带好护照和机票。长城很大,请跟老师或导游一起参观。如果你还没到过长城,这是一个很好的机会!参观以后,你可以在这儿买东西,也可以照相。
Welcome to the Great Wall! Please bring your passport and plane ticket. The Great Wall is very large, so please tour it together with your teacher or guide. If you haven't been to the Great Wall yet, this is a great opportunity! After the tour, you can shop here and also take photos.

理解问题 — Comprehension questions:

  1. 参观长城以前,你应该带什么? (What should you bring before touring the Great Wall?)
  2. 参观的时候,你应该跟谁一起? (Who should you tour with?)
  3. 参观以后,你可以做什么? (What can you do after the tour?)

Writing Workshop

Write a short passage of five to seven sentences about your own travel experiences. Use only vocabulary and grammar from Chapters 1-17.

写作任务 — Writing task: Type your sentences with Pinyin input if possible, or copy/handwrite the characters you have already been assigned for handwriting. Your passage must include:

  1. At least two experiences using experiential 过.
  2. At least one negative experience using 没(有)...过 or 还没...过.
  3. At least one use of 次 to say how many times you have done something.
  4. A closing sentence using 再 to say something you would like to do again or for the first time.

修改清单 — Editing checklist:

  • Experiential 过 is placed directly after the verb.
  • Negative experience sentences use 没(有) with 过 still present, not 不.
  • 次 appears after 过 and before the place-name object, matching the pattern practiced in this chapter.
  • The passage reads as a connected account of travel experiences, not a disconnected list.
  • A Chinese period (。) ends each sentence.

Culture and Communication

Culture Note — Talking about travel

Asking 你去过...吗? (Have you ever been to...?) is a common, friendly way to start a conversation about travel in many Mandarin-speaking contexts, similar to asking about someone's travel history in English. Well-known destinations such as 长城 often come up naturally in these conversations because of their cultural significance, but travel habits, favorite destinations, and how much detail people share vary widely by individual and region, so treat this as a common conversational pattern rather than a fixed rule.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Confusing 过 with perfective 了: 我去过北京 (I have been to Beijing at some point) is different from 我去了北京 (I went to Beijing — on a specific occasion, such as yesterday or last week). Choose based on whether you are describing a general experience or a specific event.
  • Dropping 过 in the negative: unlike perfective 了, experiential 过 does not disappear when negated — 我没去过日本, not 我没去日本, if you mean "I have never been."
  • Misplacing 次: the number and measure word usually come between 过 and the object — 去过两次北京 is correct; 去过北京两次 is also heard but less commonly modeled at this stage, so follow the pattern practiced here.
  • Confusing 还 and 再: 还 pairs with negation to mean "not yet," while 再 pairs with a future action to mean "again" — they are not interchangeable.

Chapter Summary

This chapter introduced experiential 过 for talking about life experiences, distinguished it from the perfective 了 you learned in Chapter 16, and added 次 for counting occurrences, 还 for "not yet," 再 for "again," and 到 for arriving at a destination. You practiced talking about places you have and have not visited, and you read simple travel signage.
