因为我喜欢中文

Volume I, Chapter 19: Reasons, Opinions, and Connected Discourse · Speak and Write Mandarin Chinese: Foundations of Practical Communication

Chapter Overview and Learning Objectives

In Chapter 18, you compared cities and stated plans using 打算, 比, 更, and 最. This chapter turns to giving reasons and connecting ideas across more than one sentence. You will build full control of 因为...所以 to explain why something is true or why you made a choice. You will also begin productive work with 虽然...但是 to express a contrast, moving from the recognition you may have noticed in earlier readings toward guided production. Finally, you will develop early awareness of 得 as a marker that appears before a description of how an action is done, without yet being asked to produce it freely.

By the end of this chapter, you will be able to:

  1. Give a reason for a statement or opinion using 因为...所以....
  2. Answer 为什么 questions with a complete 因为 clause.
  3. Recognize and begin to produce simple contrasts using 虽然...但是... with guided support.
  4. Recognize 得 before a description of how an action is performed, such as 说得很好.
  5. State and support a simple opinion about a familiar topic.
  6. Read and interpret a short opinion paragraph that links two or more ideas.
  7. Write a short connected paragraph explaining a reason and a contrast.

Communication Scenario

Near the end of the semester, 安娜's teacher asks the class to share why they are studying Chinese and how they feel about the experience so far. 安娜 and 大卫 talk before class about what they will say.

  1. You will hear and read 安娜 and 大卫 explaining their reasons for studying Chinese using 因为...所以 and 虽然...但是.
  2. You will practice giving your own reasons and contrasts with a partner.
  3. You will write a short paragraph explaining why you are studying Chinese and one contrast in your experience.

发音重点 — Pronunciation Focus

Pronunciation Focus

This chapter introduces no new sounds or tone rules. Use the items below to review tone contrasts that come up often in this chapter's vocabulary.

  • The falling-rising shape of 因为 (yīnwèi) across two different tones — keep the first syllable high and level, then let the second syllable fall cleanly.
  • 所以 (suǒyǐ) combines two third-tone syllables in citation form; in connected speech, remember the third-tone sandhi rule from earlier chapters and pronounce the first syllable with a rising contour before the second, full third tone.
  • The falling tone of 但是 (dànshì) — both syllables fall, so keep the pitch from rising unnaturally between them.
  • Distinguishing 难 (nán), second tone, from 那 (nà), fourth tone, which you already know — practice both in short phrases to keep the contrast clear.
语法 — Grammar and Sentence Patterns

Grammar and Sentence Patterns

因为 + Reason, 所以 + Result — giving a reason

因为我喜欢中文,所以我每天学习。 Yīnwèi wǒ xǐhuan Zhōngwén, suǒyǐ wǒ měitiān xuéxí. Because I like Chinese, I study every day.

因为 introduces the reason clause and 所以 introduces the result clause. Unlike English "because," which can stand alone with its result implied, Mandarin commonly keeps both 因为 and 所以 together in the same sentence, especially in careful speech and writing.

因为 + Reason (alone) — answering 为什么

你为什么学习中文?因为我打算明年去中国。 Nǐ wèishénme xuéxí Zhōngwén? Yīnwèi wǒ dǎsuàn míngnián qù Zhōngguó. Why are you studying Chinese? Because I plan to go to China next year.

When answering a 为什么 question directly, 因为 can appear alone without 所以, since the result is already understood from the question.

虽然 + Contrast Point A, 但是 + Contrast Point B — expressing contrast

虽然中文有点儿难,但是很有意思。 Suīrán Zhōngwén yǒudiǎnr nán, dànshì hěn yǒu yìsi. Although Chinese is a bit difficult, it is very interesting.

虽然 introduces the first, concessive point, and 但是 introduces the contrasting point that follows. Both connectors usually appear together in a single sentence, similar to 因为...所以. This chapter introduces the pattern for guided, supported production; full independent control will continue to develop in later study.

Language Note — 得 before a description of how an action is done (recognition)

You may notice sentences like 她说得很好 (Tā shuō de hěn hǎo, "She speaks very well"). Here, 得 connects the verb 说 to a following description of how the action is performed. This 得 is written differently from the 的 you already use for possession and the 地 used before some verbs, even though all three can sound similar in casual speech. For now, focus on recognizing this pattern when you see or hear it; you are not yet expected to produce it freely.

我觉得 + Opinion — stating an opinion

我觉得学习中文很有意思。 Wǒ juéde xuéxí Zhōngwén hěn yǒu yìsi. I think studying Chinese is very interesting.

我觉得 is a natural, common way to soften an opinion, similar to the culture note in Chapter 18. It combines well with 因为...所以 and 虽然...但是 to build a short, connected opinion statement.

对话 — Model Dialogue

Model Dialogue

安娜和大卫 — Anna and David:
安娜:大卫,老师问我们为什么学习中文,你打算说什么?
大卫:因为我打算明年去中国旅游,所以我想学好中文。你呢?
安娜:我觉得中国文化很有意思,所以我决定学习中文。
大卫:你觉得中文难不难?
安娜:虽然汉字有点儿难,但是我每天练习,进步很快。
大卫:我也是。虽然一开始很难,但是现在容易多了。
安娜:太好了!我们应该继续努力,一起进步。

Notice how both speakers use 因为...所以 to give reasons and 虽然...但是 to show that something is true even though it involves a difficulty.

练习 — Guided Practice

Guided Practice

练习一 — Exercise 1: Complete each sentence with 因为 and 所以.

  1. _我喜欢中国文化,_我学习中文。 (Because I like Chinese culture, I study Chinese.)
  2. _她打算去北京,_她每天练习说中文。 (Because she plans to go to Beijing, she practices speaking Chinese every day.)

练习二 — Exercise 2: Complete each sentence with 虽然 and 但是.

  2. _今天很忙,_我还是学习了中文。 (Although today was very busy, I still studied Chinese.)

练习三 — Exercise 3: Answer each 为什么 question with a complete 因为 clause.

  1. 你为什么学习中文? (Why are you studying Chinese?)
  2. 你为什么喜欢中国文化? (Why do you like Chinese culture?)

Listening Practice

Ask a partner, instructor, or fluent speaker to read the passage below aloud twice at a natural pace before answering.

If no speaker is available, this is a Listening Script for Independent Use. Read it aloud yourself, slowly at first, then at a natural pace. Any spoken model should be verified by a fluent Mandarin speaker before being treated as a pronunciation standard.

安娜为什么学习中文 — Why Anna Studies Chinese:
安娜觉得中国文化很有意思,所以她决定学习中文。虽然汉字一开始很难,但是她每天练习写字和说话,进步很快。因为她打算明年跟大卫一起去中国,所以她很努力地学习。安娜说:「虽然学习中文不容易,但是我觉得很值得。」

听力任务 — Listening task:

QuestionAnswer
安娜为什么决定学习中文? (Why did Anna decide to study Chinese?)______
安娜觉得汉字怎么样? (What does Anna think about Chinese characters?)______
安娜为什么很努力地学习? (Why does Anna study so hard?)______

Speaking Practice

控制性练习 — Controlled practice: guided interview

With a partner, take turns asking and answering: 你为什么学习中文?你觉得中文难不难?虽然中文有点儿难,但是你为什么继续学习?

交际任务 — Communicative task: sharing reasons and contrasts

With a partner, take turns explaining one reason for something you do using 因为...所以, and one contrast in your experience using 虽然...但是. Listen to your partner and ask one follow-up question.

独立练习 — Solo alternative

Record yourself explaining why you are studying Chinese, using 因为...所以, and describing one thing that is difficult but still worthwhile, using 虽然...但是.

Reading Practice

Read the short opinion paragraph below, then answer the comprehension questions.

我叫大卫。我学习中文已经一年了。因为我打算明年去中国旅游,所以我每天都练习说中文和写汉字。虽然汉字一开始很难记,但是我觉得很有意思,因为每个字都有自己的故事。我的中文老师说我进步很快,我也觉得自己比以前说得更好。虽然还有很多要学,但是我打算继续努力,因为我真的很喜欢中文。
My name is David. I have been studying Chinese for a year now. Because I plan to travel to China next year, I practice speaking Chinese and writing characters every day. Although characters were hard to remember at first, I find them interesting, because every character has its own story. My Chinese teacher says I'm improving quickly, and I also feel I speak better than before. Although there is still a lot to learn, I plan to keep working hard, because I really like Chinese.

理解问题 — Comprehension questions:

  1. 大卫为什么每天练习说中文和写汉字? (Why does David practice speaking Chinese and writing characters every day?)
  2. 大卫觉得汉字怎么样?为什么? (What does David think about Chinese characters? Why?)
  3. 大卫打算怎么做? (What does David plan to do?)

Writing Workshop

Write a short paragraph of five to seven sentences explaining why you are studying Chinese and describing one contrast in your experience. Use only vocabulary and grammar from Chapters 1-19.

写作任务 — Writing task: Type your sentences with Pinyin input if possible, or copy/handwrite the characters you have already been assigned for handwriting. Your paragraph must include:

  1. At least one sentence using 因为...所以 to give a reason.
  2. At least one sentence using 虽然...但是 to express a contrast.
  3. At least one use of 我觉得 to state an opinion.
  4. A closing sentence about your plans for continuing to study.

修改清单 — Editing checklist:

  • 因为 and 所以 appear together in the same sentence unless directly answering a 为什么 question.
  • 虽然 and 但是 appear together in the same sentence.
  • Opinions are softened naturally with 我觉得 where appropriate.
  • The paragraph reads as connected ideas, not a disconnected list of sentences.
  • A Chinese period (。) ends each sentence.

Culture and Communication

Culture Note — Explaining reasons and modesty about progress

When explaining reasons for a decision, many Mandarin speakers value connecting the reason clearly to the result rather than leaving it implied, which is why 因为...所以 often appears together even in casual conversation. When discussing personal progress or ability, it is also common in many contexts to respond to praise with modest phrases rather than direct agreement, such as downplaying one's own skill even while acknowledging real improvement. This varies among individuals, generations, and settings, and should not be treated as a fixed rule for every speaker.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Dropping 所以: in careful speech and writing, avoid leaving out 所以 when 因为 is present, unless you are directly answering a 为什么 question.
  • Dropping 但是: similarly, avoid leaving out 但是 when 虽然 is present; the two normally appear together in one sentence.
  • Confusing 得, 的, and 地: these three sound similar but serve different functions. This chapter only asks you to recognize 得 before a description of how an action is done; you are not yet expected to choose among all three independently.
  • Overusing 因为...所以 for every sentence: not every statement needs an explicit reason. Use the pattern when a reason genuinely strengthens your meaning, not as a habitual filler.

Chapter Summary

This chapter developed full control of 因为...所以 for giving reasons, began guided productive work with 虽然...但是 for expressing contrast, and introduced recognition of 得 before a description of how an action is performed. You practiced stating and supporting opinions with 我觉得, and you read and wrote short connected paragraphs about your reasons for studying Chinese.
