Volume II, Chapter 10: Unit II Assessment — Independent Living · Speak and Write Mandarin Chinese: Everyday Independence and Connected Communication

Chapter Overview and Learning Objectives

This chapter is a cumulative assessment. It introduces no major new grammar, no new high-burden character set, and no new pronunciation or register system. Instead, it asks you to bring together everything from Chapters 6 through 9 — reporting a housing problem, making an appointment or requesting a service, describing a transportation plan, and comparing and buying something — into one connected set of tasks about managing daily life independently.

By the end of this chapter, you will be able to:

  1. Describe a housing or daily-life problem and request a repair or service using location expressions and result complements.
  2. Make or discuss an appointment politely using 给 and service-register language.
  3. Describe a travel plan or a route disruption using 从...到, 往/向, and related announcement vocabulary.
  4. Compare options, ask about and give prices, and explain a purchase decision.
  5. Complete an integrated listening, reading, speaking, and writing task that draws on all four preceding chapters at once.

Every system assessed in this chapter was already introduced and practiced in Chapters 6–9. If any pattern below feels unfamiliar, review the relevant chapter before continuing — this chapter measures what you can already do, rather than teaching something new.

Communication Scenario

It has been a busy week: something in your apartment needs fixing, you have an appointment to arrange, your usual bus route has a disruption, and you still need to buy a gift before the weekend. This chapter follows you through all four situations in one connected set of tasks.

  1. You will listen to a voicemail about an appointment change and a transportation delay.
  2. You will read a building notice about a repair schedule and a discount sign from a nearby shop.
  3. You will write a message to a friend or neighbor summarizing your week and your decisions.
  4. You will speak with a partner, handling a service request, a comparison, and a decision in one connected conversation.
生词复习 — Recycled Core Vocabulary

Core Vocabulary

No new productive vocabulary is introduced in this chapter. The table below recycles key words from Chapters 6–9 that this chapter's tasks depend on.

No new receptive vocabulary is required for independent completion of this chapter's tasks. Familiar receptive items from earlier chapters (such as measure words for vehicles and devices) may reappear in the listening and reading passages and remain recognition-only.

发音和读写 — Pronunciation and Literacy Focus

Pronunciation and Literacy Focus

No new pronunciation or literacy system is introduced. This chapter checks intelligibility and control of systems already active from Chapters 1–9:

  • Tone accuracy in familiar words: pay particular attention to 买/卖, third-tone sandhi in phrases like 你好, and the neutral tone in words such as 便宜 and 朋友.
  • Reading prices and times aloud: continue applying number tone sandhi when reading appointment times and prices in the listening and reading passages.
  • Typing: this chapter checks your ability to type a short connected message through Pinyin input, including correctly selecting characters that share Pinyin readings.

Handwriting is limited to the productive inventory already scheduled in Chapters 1–9. No new handwriting characters are introduced here.

语法复习 — Grammar and Sentence Patterns Review

Grammar and Sentence Patterns

No new grammar system is introduced in this chapter. The four patterns below are recycled together because this chapter's tasks require you to move between them smoothly within a single connected conversation or message.

1. Reporting a Problem and Requesting a Repair (Chapter 6)

我家的灯坏了,可以请人来修一下吗?
Wǒ jiā de dēng huài le, kěyǐ qǐng rén lái xiū yíxià ma?
The light in my apartment is broken — could someone come fix it?

2. Making or Adjusting an Appointment (Chapter 7)

我想把预约改到星期五,可以吗?
Wǒ xiǎng bǎ yùyuē gǎidào xīngqīwǔ, kěyǐ ma?
I'd like to change my appointment to Friday — is that possible?

3. Describing Route and Disruption (Chapter 8)

公共汽车晚点了,我们得往地铁站走。
Gōnggòng qìchē wǎndiǎn le, wǒmen děi wǎng dìtiězhàn zǒu.
The bus is delayed — we need to walk toward the subway station.

4. Comparing, Pricing, and Deciding (Chapter 9)

这个比那个便宜,我选好了,就买这个吧。
Zhège bǐ nàge piányi, wǒ xuǎn hǎo le, jiù mǎi zhège ba.
This one is cheaper than that one — I've decided, I'll buy this one.

The performance task below requires connecting these four systems within realistic transitions — for example, moving from a delayed bus, to arriving late for an appointment, to still finding time to compare and buy something on the way home.

对话 — Model Dialogue

Model Dialogue

Context: two neighbors catching up on a busy week, informal register

Lili: Are you busy this week? David: Very busy! The pipe in my apartment broke, and I only got someone to come fix it this morning. Lili: Is it fixed? David: It's fixed. But I also have to change my afternoon appointment — the doctor said to change it to tomorrow. Lili: So did you still go buy the gift? David: I did, but the bus was delayed, so I had to walk toward the subway station. After I got to the store, I looked at two cups — one was relatively expensive, one was relatively cheap, and the colors were different too. Lili: Did you decide? David: I decided — I bought the cheaper one, twenty-five kuai altogether.

Role-play a phone call to a neighbor or friend describing your busy week: a repair request, an appointment change, a transportation problem, and a shopping decision, connected as one natural conversation rather than four separate lists.

独立练习 — Solo alternative

Record yourself narrating a busy week using all four systems from Chapters 6–9 in a connected way.

阅读练习 — Reading Practice

  2. 如果家里还有别的问题,应该怎么办?
  3. 这个周末,鞋子打几折?
写作练习 — Writing Workshop

Writing Workshop

Write a message (eight to twelve sentences) to a friend or neighbor summarizing your week.

写作任务 — Writing task: Type your message with Pinyin input. Your message must include:

  1. A housing or daily-life problem and a repair request, using 坏了 and 修.
  2. An appointment change, using 预约 and 给.
  3. A transportation problem or route, using 从...到 or 往/向, and 晚点 if relevant.
  4. A shopping comparison and decision, using at least one comparison word and one result complement (选好, 决定好, or 找到).
  5. A closing sentence connecting the whole week together.

修改清单 — Editing checklist:

  • All four systems (housing/repair, appointment, transportation, shopping) appear and are clearly connected, not listed as unrelated sentences.
  • Comparison words and result complements are used accurately, not interchangeably.
  • Time and price expressions follow the guided patterns already introduced.
  • The message reads as one coherent topic chain with natural transitions.
  • Chinese punctuation (。,?) is used correctly throughout.

Culture and Communication

Culture Note — Managing daily-life logistics

Norms around scheduling, punctuality, and communicating changes to appointments or plans vary by setting, institution, and personal relationship across Mandarin-speaking communities; no single practice applies everywhere. In many contemporary urban settings, a polite phone call or text message explaining a delay or requesting a change, as modeled in this chapter, is a normal and expected part of managing daily responsibilities.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Treating this chapter as new material: every pattern here was already introduced in Chapters 6–9. If something feels unfamiliar, review the relevant chapter rather than trying to learn it for the first time here.
  • Listing systems instead of connecting them: the performance task rewards natural transitions between topics (repair → appointment → transportation → shopping), not four disconnected sentences.
  • Overextending result complements: continue to use only 选好, 决定好, and 找到 as modeled; the fuller complement system is not yet active.
  • Confusing 比较 and 比: continue to use 比较 for a general/relative comparison and 比 to compare two named things directly.

Chapter Summary

This chapter introduced no new grammar, vocabulary, or literacy systems. It brought together housing and repair language, appointment and service requests, transportation description and disruption, and shopping comparison and decision-making from Chapters 6–9 into one connected set of listening, reading, speaking, and writing tasks, verifying that these systems can be used together in natural, realistic communication.

Looking Ahead

现在你会做什么 — What you can do now

You can report a housing problem and request a repair, make or adjust an appointment politely, describe a transportation plan or disruption, and compare, price, and decide on a purchase — and you can connect all four of these into one natural, coherent account of your week.

继续前进:第十一章 — Continuing on: Chapter 11

Chapter 11, 学习方法和技能 (Learning Methods and Skills), begins Unit III by refining 会/能/可以 and introducing ability frames connected to study strategies, moving from independent daily-life logistics toward learning, work, and community participation.
