Volume II, Chapter 14: Community, Environment, and Opinion · Speak and Write Mandarin Chinese: Everyday Independence and Connected Communication

Chapter Overview and Learning Objectives

This chapter moves from reading public notices toward talking about your own neighborhood and community. You will discuss local issues such as noise, recycling, parks, and traffic; give reasons for your opinions using 因为...所以..., which you have already been using since earlier chapters; and learn to recognize — but not yet freely produce — conditional sentences with 如果, which you will begin using productively in a later chapter. The chapter also introduces polite ways of stating and softening an opinion.

By the end of this chapter, you will be able to:

  1. Describe a local community or environmental issue using vocabulary you have learned.
  2. State an opinion and give a reason for it using 因为...所以....
  3. Recognize and understand simple conditional sentences with 如果 in context.
  4. Politely agree, disagree, or partially agree with someone else's opinion.
  5. Write a short paragraph expressing an opinion about a community or environmental issue.

Communication Scenario

Your neighborhood association is collecting residents' opinions about a proposed change to a local park. You will listen to neighbors discussing the proposal, read a short community survey, discuss your own opinion with a partner, and write a short paragraph giving your opinion and your reasons.

  1. You will listen to two neighbors discussing a proposed change to a local park.
  2. You will read a short community survey about a local issue.
  3. You will write a paragraph stating your opinion and your reasons.
  4. You will speak with a partner about a local issue and respond to their opinion.

Receptive only: the reading and listening passages in this chapter include sentences with 如果 (for example, 如果公园更大,大家会更高兴). You are expected to recognize and understand the pattern 如果 + condition, (就) + result, but you are not yet expected to build your own 如果 sentences freely; that productive control develops in a later chapter.

发音和读写 — Pronunciation and Literacy Focus

Pronunciation and Literacy Focus

  • Tone pair practice: 环境 (huánjìng) combines second and fourth tone; practice the rising-then-falling contour so the two syllables stay clearly distinct.
  • Opinion-sentence rhythm: when giving an opinion with 我觉得 or 我认为, the phrase is typically said as one connected unit before a short pause, then the opinion itself. Practice this phrasing with the sentences in the Grammar section.
  • Typing: practice typing 社区, 环境, 意见, and 调查 through Pinyin input, paying attention to selecting the correct characters among similar-sounding IME candidates.

No new handwriting characters are introduced beyond the productive inventory already scheduled through Chapter 13. This chapter's core vocabulary is a recognition and typing target; handwriting remains limited to the previously scheduled inventory.

语法 — Grammar and Sentence Patterns

Grammar and Sentence Patterns

1. Giving Reasons for an Opinion: 因为...所以...

You have already used 因为 and 所以 to explain reasons in earlier chapters. In this chapter, you use this familiar pattern to support an opinion rather than simply explain a fact.

我觉得公园应该扩大,因为附近的孩子越来越多,所以需要更大的空间。
Wǒ juéde gōngyuán yīnggāi kuòdà, yīnwèi fùjìn de háizi yuè lái yuè duō, suǒyǐ xūyào gèng dà de kōngjiān.
I think the park should be expanded, because there are more and more children in the area, so more space is needed.

Notice that 因为 and 所以 may both appear in the same sentence, or 所以 alone may connect two independent statements. Either pattern is acceptable in connected opinion-giving.

2. Stating an Opinion Politely: 我觉得 and 我认为

我觉得 + opinion — a common, slightly conversational way to introduce an opinion.
我觉得这个社区很干净。
Wǒ juéde zhège shèqū hěn gānjìng.
I think this community is very clean.

我认为 + opinion — a slightly more formal way to introduce an opinion, common in surveys and written statements.
我认为社区应该多种树。
Wǒ rènwéi shèqū yīnggāi duō zhòng shù.
I think the community should plant more trees.

3. Agreeing, Disagreeing, and Partially Agreeing

我同意你的看法。
Wǒ tóngyì nǐ de kànfǎ.
I agree with your view.

我不太同意,我觉得噪音不是最大的问题。
Wǒ bú tài tóngyì, wǒ juéde zàoyīn bú shì zuì dà de wèntí.
I don't quite agree; I think noise isn't the biggest problem.

你说得有道理,可是我还是觉得...
Nǐ shuō de yǒu dàolǐ, kěshì wǒ háishi juéde...
What you say makes sense, but I still think...

Softening disagreement with phrases such as 不太 (not quite) or 你说得有道理,可是... (that makes sense, but...) is a natural way to disagree politely in a discussion.

4. Recognizing 如果 Sentences (Receptive Only)

You will see 如果 in this chapter's survey and dialogue. 如果 introduces a condition, and the result often follows with 就.

如果公园更大,大家会更高兴。
Rúguǒ gōngyuán gèng dà, dàjiā huì gèng gāoxìng.
If the park were bigger, everyone would be happier.

For now, focus on recognizing the pattern 如果 + condition, (就) + result and understanding its meaning when you read or hear it. You are not yet expected to form new 如果 sentences on your own; that control develops later in the series.

对话 — Model Dialogue

Model Dialogue

Context: two neighbors discussing a proposed change to the local park, informal register

Mr. Chen: Did you see the community survey? They want to expand the park. Ms. Lin: Yes. I think it's a good idea. Mr. Chen: Why? Ms. Lin: Because there are more and more children nearby, and the park is too small now, so it needs more space. Mr. Chen: I agree, but I'm also worried about the noise issue. Ms. Lin: That makes sense, but if the park is well designed, the noise shouldn't be too much of a problem. Mr. Chen: Maybe you're right. What are you planning to write on the survey? Ms. Lin: I'm planning to write: I support this plan, but I hope the community will also consider the noise issue.

社区意见调查:关于公园扩大的计划

很多居民认为公园应该扩大,因为附近的孩子越来越多,公园现在太小了。如果公园更大,大家会更高兴,也会有更多地方运动和休息。

可是也有一些居民反对这个计划,因为扩大公园需要更多钱,而且可能会有更多噪音。

请写下你的意见:你支持还是反对这个计划?为什么?
Community opinion survey: about the plan to expand the park. Many residents think the park should be expanded, because there are more and more children in the area and the park is too small now. If the park were bigger, everyone would be happier and there would be more space to exercise and rest. However, some residents oppose the plan, because expanding the park requires more money and may bring more noise. Please write down your opinion: do you support or oppose this plan? Why?
  1. 为什么很多居民认为公园应该扩大?
  2. 为什么有一些居民反对这个计划?
  3. 如果公园更大,会有什么好处?
写作练习 — Writing Workshop

Writing Workshop

Write a short paragraph (five to eight sentences) giving your opinion about a community or environmental issue.

写作任务 — Writing task: Type your paragraph with Pinyin input. Your paragraph must include:

  1. A clear statement of your opinion, using 我觉得 or 我认为.
  2. At least one reason for your opinion, using 因为...所以....
  3. A response to a possible opposing view, using 可是 or 不过.
  4. A closing statement summarizing your position.
  5. Consistent, appropriate register throughout, matching a written community-survey response rather than casual speech.

修改清单 — Editing checklist:

  • 我觉得 and 我认为 are not mixed inconsistently within the same paragraph.
  • 因为 and 所以 are used correctly to connect a reason to an opinion.
  • The paragraph states its opinion within the first two sentences.
  • Chinese punctuation (,。?!) is used correctly throughout.

Culture and Communication

Culture Note — Discussing community opinions

In many Mandarin-speaking communities, disagreement in a group discussion is often softened rather than stated directly, especially with neighbors, older residents, or people one does not know well. Phrases such as 你说得有道理,可是... (what you say makes sense, but...) or 我不太同意 (I don't quite agree) allow a speaker to disagree while still acknowledging the other person's view. This pattern is common but not universal, and directness can vary by relationship, setting, generation, and region.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Using 我认为 in casual conversation: 我认为 is more natural in formal or written contexts; among friends, 我觉得 sounds more natural.
  • Disagreeing too directly: stating 我不同意 alone can sound abrupt; softening with 不太 or acknowledging the other view first is more natural in most everyday discussions.
  • Trying to produce new 如果 sentences at this stage: focus on recognizing and understanding 如果 sentences in reading and listening; productive control develops later in the series.
  • Forgetting to give a reason: an opinion without 因为...所以... can sound unsupported in a discussion or written response.

Chapter Summary

This chapter introduced vocabulary and patterns for discussing community and environmental issues, including 社区, 环境, 回收, 意见, and 调查. You practiced stating opinions with 我觉得 and 我认为, giving reasons with 因为...所以..., and agreeing, disagreeing, or partially agreeing with another person's view. You also practiced recognizing — without yet producing — conditional sentences with 如果, and you wrote your own short opinion paragraph.
