旅行经历和文化活动
Chapter Overview and Learning Objectives
This chapter opens Unit IV by moving your storytelling into fuller experience paragraphs. You have already used 了 and 过 to talk about single past actions and general experience; this chapter connects those particles into longer travel narratives, adds directional complements such as 进去 and 回来 to describe movement more precisely, and gives you controlled tools for comparing cultural practices without treating any single region as representative of every Mandarin-speaking community. The chapter task asks you to describe a real or imagined trip from beginning to end.
By the end of this chapter, you will be able to:
- Narrate a multi-step travel experience using 了, 过, and time-sequence words in connected order.
- Use basic directional complements (进去, 出来, 上去, 下来, 回来) to describe movement into, out of, up, down, and back.
- Understand a short spoken travel account and a written travel journal entry.
- Compare a cultural practice across two labeled regions or contexts without presenting either as universal.
- Write a short travel-experience paragraph combining narrative sequence and one labeled cultural observation.
Communication Scenario
A friend who is planning a first trip to a Mandarin-speaking region has asked you to share a travel story and a few cultural observations. You will listen to a classmate's account of a weekend trip, read a short travel journal entry, discuss your own travel experience with a partner, and write a paragraph narrating a trip and comparing one cultural practice you noticed, labeled by region.
- You will listen to a short account of a weekend trip to another city.
- You will read a travel journal entry describing a day of sightseeing.
- You will tell a partner about a real or imagined trip, using sequence and directional complements.
- You will write a short travel-experience paragraph with one labeled cultural comparison.
Core Vocabulary
| 汉字 | Pinyin | Part/Function | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 旅行 | lǚxíng | verb/noun | to travel; a trip | 我去年旅行了三次。 |
| 经历 | jīnglì | noun | experience | 这是一次特别的经历。 |
| 出发 | chūfā | verb | to set off, depart | 我们八点出发。 |
| 到达 | dàodá | verb | to arrive | 我们中午到达了那个城市。 |
| 参观 | cānguān | verb | to visit (a place) | 我们参观了一个老房子。 |
| 风景 | fēngjǐng | noun | scenery | 那里的风景很美。 |
| 印象 | yìnxiàng | noun | impression | 我对那个地方印象很深。 |
| 当地 | dāngdì | attributive noun | local | 我们吃了当地的小吃。 |
| 习俗 | xísú | noun | custom | 每个地方的习俗不一样。 |
| 进去 | jìnqù | directional complement | to go in | 我们走进去了。 |
| 出来 | chūlái | directional complement | to come out | 他从店里走出来了。 |
| 回来 | huílái | directional complement | to come back | 我们晚上八点回来了。 |
All entries above are productive for this chapter. Additional place names, food terms, and transportation vocabulary from earlier chapters should be recycled freely in speaking and writing tasks.
Pronunciation Focus: 不 Sandhi in Connected Narration
This chapter activates productive control of 不 tone sandhi in longer stretches of speech. Recall that 不 (bù, fourth tone in isolation) changes to second tone (bú) immediately before another fourth-tone syllable.
| Written Pinyin | Spoken realization | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| 不去 (bù qù) | bú qù | not going |
| 不是 (bù shì) | bú shì | is not |
| 不错 (bù cuò) | bú cuò | not bad |
Tone marks in this textbook continue to show the underlying (written) tone, following standard Pinyin convention; the spoken realization is a pronunciation note, not a spelling change. Practice reading the narration in the Model Dialogue aloud, applying 不 sandhi automatically before fourth-tone syllables.
Grammar and Sentence Patterns
1. Connected Narration with 了 and 过
Longer travel narratives link a sequence of completed actions with 了 and mark general life experience with 过. These are not interchangeable: 了 reports that a specific event happened or a state changed; 过 reports that an experience has occurred at some point, without pinpointing a single completed event in the narrative chain.
我们先坐火车到了上海,然后参观了一个博物馆,晚上吃了当地的小吃。我以前没去过上海,所以这次旅行对我很特别。
We first took the train and arrived in Shanghai, then visited a museum, and in the evening ate local snacks. I had never been to Shanghai before, so this trip was special for me.
Note that 过 here appears in the negative frame 没...过 to state prior lack of experience, a pattern already consolidated from earlier chapters.
2. Directional Complements: 进去, 出来, 上去, 下来, 回来
A directional complement follows a verb of motion to show the path of movement relative to the speaker or a reference point.
| Pattern | Direction | Example |
|---|---|---|
| 走 + 进去 | in, away from speaker | 他走进去了。(He walked in.) |
| 走 + 出来 | out, toward speaker | 她从房子里走出来了。(She walked out of the house.) |
| 爬 + 上去 | up, away from speaker | 我们爬上去看风景。(We climbed up to see the scenery.) |
| 走 + 下来 | down, toward speaker | 他慢慢走下来了。(He walked down slowly.) |
| V + 回来 | back, toward speaker | 我们晚上回来了。(We came back in the evening.) |
This chapter introduces the simple directional complement pattern only. Compound directional complements built on these forms (for example combining a direction with a further result) are developed in the next chapter; do not extend the pattern beyond the forms above.
3. Sequencing a Narrative: 先...然后...最后...
Use 先 (first), 然后 (then), and 最后 (finally) to organize a multi-step account, recycling the time-place-manner ordering consolidated earlier in the volume.
我们先坐飞机去了那个城市,然后参观了几个地方,最后回酒店休息了。
We first flew to the city, then visited a few places, and finally returned to the hotel to rest.
4. Labeled Cultural Comparison with 在...,而在...
To compare a practice across two labeled contexts without implying either is universal, use a simple contrastive frame such as 在...,而在...(In..., whereas in...).
在这个城市,很多人早上喝豆浆,而在我的家乡,很多人早上喝咖啡。
In this city, many people drink soy milk in the morning, whereas in my hometown, many people drink coffee in the morning.
Always attach a specific place, city, or labeled community to a cultural observation. Avoid unlabeled statements such as "Chinese people always..." — these misrepresent the diversity of Mandarin-speaking communities and are not accurate cultural claims.
Model Dialogue: 周末去了哪儿?
Context: two classmates, informal register, talking after the weekend.
Xiao Lin: Where did you go this weekend? Xiao Chen: I went to Suzhou by train with a friend; I had never been to Suzhou before. Xiao Lin: What did you do? Xiao Chen: We first visited a garden, then walked in and saw a lot of old buildings — the scenery was really beautiful. At noon we went out and ate local noodles. Xiao Lin: What time did you come back? Xiao Chen: We took the train back at seven in the evening. This trip left a really deep impression on me, because Suzhou's gardens are quite different from the parks in my hometown. In Suzhou, many gardens have a very old history, whereas in my hometown, most parks are newly built.
Guided Practice
A. Fill in the correct directional complement (进去 / 出来 / 上去 / 下来 / 回来).
- 我们爬______,看到了很美的风景。
- 他从房子里走______了,手里拿着一本书。
- 我们晚上十点才______,很累了。
B. Choose 了 or 过 to complete each sentence.
- 我以前没去______北京,这次是第一次。
- 我们昨天参观______一个博物馆。
- 你吃______当地的小吃吗?
C. Combine each pair of sentences using 先...然后...
- 我们坐火车去了那个城市。 / 我们参观了一个公园。
- 她走进花园。 / 她拍了很多照片。
Listening Practice
Listening script for independent use. Read aloud slowly, then at a natural pace, or have a fluent speaker record it.
独白 — Monologue:
上个周末,我跟家人一起去了一个小城市旅行。我们坐火车出发,中午到达了。我们先参观了一个老公园,走进去看到很多老树,风景很安静。然后我们去吃了当地的小吃,很好吃。下午我们爬上去看了一个老塔,从上面看整个城市,特别漂亮。晚上我们坐火车回来了。这是我第一次去那个城市,以前没去过,印象特别深。
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| 他们是怎么去的?什么时候到达的? | ______ |
| 他们先做了什么?然后做了什么? | ______ |
| 说话人以前去过那个城市吗?你怎么知道? | ______ |
Speaking Practice
交际任务 — Communicative task: 我的旅行经历
With a partner, tell a real or imagined travel story. Use 先...然后...最后... to sequence at least three actions, include at least one directional complement, and use 了 and 过 accurately. Ask your partner at least one follow-up question about their trip.
独立练习 — Solo alternative
Record yourself narrating a one-minute travel story following the same requirements, then add one labeled cultural comparison using 在...,而在....
Reading Practice
Read the travel journal entry, then answer the questions.
Writing Workshop
Write a short travel-experience paragraph (six to nine sentences) about a real or imagined trip.
写作任务 — Writing task: Type your paragraph with Pinyin input. Your paragraph must include:
- A clear sequence of at least three actions using 先...然后...最后....
- At least one 了 sentence and one 过 sentence, used accurately.
- At least one directional complement from this chapter (进去, 出来, 上去, 下来, or 回来).
- One labeled cultural comparison using 在...,而在..., naming two specific places.
- Consistent, natural register appropriate to an informal travel account.
修改清单 — Editing checklist:
- 了 and 过 are not used interchangeably; each matches its intended function.
- Directional complements follow a motion verb and match the intended direction.
- The cultural comparison names two specific places or communities rather than making an unlabeled general claim.
- Chinese punctuation (,。?!) is used correctly throughout.
- No new grammar beyond this chapter and prior consolidated systems is required to complete the task.
Culture and Communication
When travelers compare what they notice in a new place to what they know from home, it is easy to slip into overgeneralization. A useful habit is to always attach a comparison to a named place, city, or specific experience rather than to an entire country, ethnicity, or language community. Shop hours, meal customs, and greeting styles vary widely even within one country, and practices in one city are not necessarily practiced the same way elsewhere. The 在...,而在... pattern in this chapter is designed to build that habit directly into your sentence structure.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Confusing 了 and 过: 了 reports a specific completed action or change of state; 过 reports general experience. Do not substitute one for the other automatically.
- Misdirecting complements: 进去/出来 and 上去/下来 depend on the speaker's reference point; check whether the motion is toward or away from the speaker before choosing.
- Overloading the narrative with new grammar: keep sentences within 先...然后...最后..., 了/过, and the directional complements introduced here; compound directional complements are not yet productive.
- Unlabeled cultural claims: avoid statements that generalize an entire country or ethnicity; always name the specific place or community you are describing.
- Dropping sequence words: a string of 了-marked clauses without 先/然后/最后 can sound like an unconnected list rather than a narrative.
Chapter Summary
This chapter connected 了 and 过 into extended travel narratives, added simple directional complements (进去, 出来, 上去, 下来, 回来) to describe movement precisely, and introduced a controlled frame for labeled cultural comparison. You listened to and read connected travel accounts, told your own travel story with sequencing and directional complements, and wrote a short paragraph combining narrative and a responsibly labeled cultural observation.
