媒体和日常新闻
Chapter Overview and Learning Objectives
This chapter continues Unit IV by moving from personal narrative into short, everyday media content. You will learn how Mandarin speakers signal where information comes from — a habit that matters as much in casual conversation as in formal reporting — and you will extend last chapter's directional complements into compound patterns that place an object between the verb and its direction. You will also practice labeling regional vocabulary responsibly when a term or a practice differs from place to place. The chapter task asks you to summarize a short news item and explain, with a clear source, where you heard or read it.
By the end of this chapter, you will be able to:
- Understand and produce short, controlled news summaries about everyday topics.
- Use source-framing language such as 据...报道, 听说, and 网上说 to say where information comes from.
- Use compound directional complements (拿出来, 带回去, 寄回去, and similar patterns) with an object placed correctly in the sentence.
- Recognize and label regional vocabulary differences without presenting one term as the only correct one.
- Write a short paragraph summarizing a piece of everyday news with a clearly stated source.
Communication Scenario
A classmate missed today's class discussion and has asked you to catch them up on something you saw or heard in the news. You will listen to a short spoken news item, read a short online news summary, discuss a recent piece of everyday news with a partner, and write a paragraph summarizing a news item and naming your source.
- You will listen to a short spoken summary of local news.
- You will read a short online news item with a clearly marked source.
- You will tell a partner about something you read or heard recently, naming your source.
- You will write a short news-summary paragraph with a compound directional complement and a labeled source.
Core Vocabulary

| 网站 | wǎngzhàn | noun | website | 我在一个新闻网站上看到的。 |
| 来源 | láiyuán | noun | source (of information) | 这个消息的来源不太清楚。 |
| 据说 | jùshuō | expression | it is said that... | 据说明天会下雨。 |
| 地区 | dìqū | noun | area, region | 这个地区的天气变化很大。 |
| 全国 | quánguó | noun/attributive | the whole country, nationwide | 这是一条全国新闻。 |

| 寄回去 | jì huíqù | compound directional complement | to mail (something) back | 我把信寄回去了。 |
All entries above are productive for this chapter. Place names, transportation vocabulary, and travel vocabulary from earlier chapters should be recycled freely in speaking and writing tasks.
Pronunciation Focus: Apical Vowels in News Vocabulary
This chapter continues developing control of the apical vowels found in zhi, chi, shi, ri, zi, ci, si — syllables where the vowel is not a full "i" sound but a brief extension of the consonant. Several high-frequency words in this chapter's vocabulary use these syllables.
| Word | Pinyin | Note |
|---|---|---|
| 记者 | jìzhě | zhě uses the retroflex apical vowel, not an English "uh" sound |
| 是不是 | shì bu shì | shì uses the retroflex apical vowel |
| 消息 | xiāoxi | the neutral-tone final syllable stays short and light, not a full stressed vowel |
Practice reading the news items in this chapter aloud slowly, holding the retroflex position for zh/ch/sh/r syllables through the full syllable rather than releasing into a vowel-like glide.
Grammar and Sentence Patterns
1. Naming a Source: 据...报道, 听说, 网上说
Mandarin speakers regularly mark where information comes from, both in casual conversation and in written reporting. Three common frames are useful at this level.
| Pattern | Use | Example |
|---|---|---|
| 据...报道 | formal, written or spoken report | 据网上报道,这个地区明天会下雨。 |
| 听说 | casual, secondhand information | 听说那家餐厅要关门了。 |
| 网上说 | casual, online source | 网上说这个消息不完全对。 |
A source-framing expression does not guarantee the information is accurate; it simply tells the listener or reader where the speaker got it. Always attach a specific source rather than presenting secondhand information as a personal fact.
2. Compound Directional Complements with an Object
Last chapter introduced simple directional complements such as 进去 and 回来 following an intransitive motion verb. When the verb takes an object — for example 拿 (to take/hold) or 带 (to bring) — the object can appear in one of two positions.
他把手机拿出来了。
他拿出来了一个手机。
He took the phone out. / He took out a phone.
With a specific, known object, the 把 construction (他把手机拿出来了) is the more natural pattern at this level and keeps the object before the verb. With an unspecified or newly mentioned object, the object may follow 来/去 (拿出来了一个手机). This chapter activates both patterns for recognition, with the 把-fronted pattern as the primary productive target.
| Pattern | Example |
|---|---|
| 把 + object + V + 出来 | 她把报纸拿出来了。(She took the newspaper out.) |
| 把 + object + V + 回去 | 我把书带回去了。(I brought the book back.) |
| 把 + object + V + 回去 | 他把信寄回去了。(He mailed the letter back.) |
3. Recycled Connectors in Short Summaries: 因为...所以..., 虽然...但是...
Short news summaries often connect a cause and a result, or a fact and a contrasting fact. Continue using 因为...所以... and 虽然...但是..., consolidated in earlier chapters, to organize summary sentences.
因为这个地区下了很大的雨,所以很多学校今天不上课。虽然这只是一条地区新闻,但是网上很多人都在说这件事。
Because it rained heavily in this region, many schools are not in session today. Although this is only a regional news item, many people online are talking about it.
4. Labeling Regional Vocabulary Responsibly
When a word or expression differs from place to place, name the region rather than presenting one form as universally correct.
这条新闻里的"出租车",在台湾有的地方叫"计程车"。同一个意思,不同的地方用不同的说法。
The word "chūzūchē" (taxi) in this news item is called "jìchéngchē" in some parts of Taiwan. The same meaning has different expressions in different places.
Avoid statements such as "Chinese people call it..." without naming a specific place or community; regional labeling keeps vocabulary comparisons accurate.
Model Dialogue: 你看新闻了吗?
Context: two classmates, informal register, catching up before class.
Xiao Wang: Did you see the news today? Xiao Li: I saw a bit. According to an online report, this region got a lot of rain yesterday, so some schools aren't in session today. Xiao Wang: Really? Where did you see this? Xiao Li: A news website — I think it was reported by the local TV station. I even pulled up the article to show my roommate. Xiao Wang: I heard heavy rain like this is rare in this region. Xiao Li: Right, although it's only a regional news item, a lot of people online are talking about it. I'm planning to bring the report back with me and read it again tonight.
Guided Practice
A. Choose the best source-framing expression (据...报道 / 听说 / 网上说).
- ______,那家商店下个月要关门了。(casual, secondhand)
- ______当地电视台______,这个地区明天会有大雨。(formal report)
- ______这个消息不完全对,你得再查一查。(casual, online)
B. Rewrite each sentence using 把 and the compound directional complement in parentheses.
- 她拿出来了手机。(把...拿出来)
- 我带回去了那本书。(把...带回去)
- 他寄回去了那封信。(把...寄回去)
C. Combine each pair of sentences using 因为...所以... or 虽然...但是...
- 这个地区下了很大的雨。 / 很多学校今天不上课。
- 这只是一条地区新闻。 / 网上很多人都在说这件事。
Listening Practice
Listening script for independent use. Read aloud slowly, then at a natural pace, or have a fluent speaker record it.
播报 — Short broadcast:
据当地电视台报道,这个地区昨天下午下了一场大雨。因为雨下得很大,所以有几条路今天不能开车。一位记者把最新的消息拿出来告诉了大家:明天天气会好一点,但是后天可能还会下雨。网上也有很多人在说这件事,有的人说这种大雨这个地区很少见。
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| 这条新闻的来源是什么? | ______ |
| 因为下雨,发生了什么事? | ______ |
| 明天和后天的天气分别会怎么样? | ______ |
Speaking Practice
交际任务 — Communicative task: 最近的消息
With a partner, tell each other about a piece of everyday news you recently read, saw, or heard about (weather, a local event, a school notice, or similar). Use at least one source-framing expression, one compound directional complement, and one connector (因为...所以... or 虽然...但是...). Ask your partner at least one follow-up question about their news.
独立练习 — Solo alternative
Record yourself giving a one-minute spoken news summary following the same requirements, then add one labeled regional vocabulary comparison.
Reading Practice
Read the short online news item, then answer the questions.
Writing Workshop
Write a short news-summary paragraph (six to nine sentences) about a real or imagined everyday news item.
写作任务 — Writing task: Type your paragraph with Pinyin input. Your paragraph must include:
- One source-framing expression (据...报道, 听说, or 网上说), naming a specific source.
- At least one compound directional complement using the 把 pattern from this chapter (拿出来, 带回去, 寄回去, or similar).
- At least one connector (因为...所以... or 虽然...但是...) organizing your summary.
- One labeled regional vocabulary or cultural comparison naming two specific places.
- Consistent, natural register appropriate to a short everyday news summary.
修改清单 — Editing checklist:
- The source of the information is clearly named, not left vague.
- The 把 construction places the object correctly before the verb and directional complement.
- The regional comparison names two specific places rather than making an unlabeled general claim.
- Chinese punctuation (,。?!) is used correctly throughout.
- No new grammar beyond this chapter and prior consolidated systems is required to complete the task.
Culture and Communication
In everyday Mandarin conversation, casually marking a source — 听说, 网上说, 我朋友说 — is a normal part of passing along information, not a formal citation requirement. It signals to the listener how much weight to give the claim. This habit is useful for language learners too: naming a source keeps a summary honest about what is confirmed fact versus secondhand report, and it avoids presenting one region's news, vocabulary, or practice as representative of every Mandarin-speaking community.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Dropping the source: a summary that omits 据...报道, 听说, or 网上说 can make secondhand information sound like a personal, verified fact.
- Misplacing the object in compound directional complements: with a specific known object, use 把 + object + verb + 出来/回去, not verb + 出来/回去 + object.
- Overloading the summary with new grammar: keep sentences within the source-framing patterns, compound directional complements, and connectors introduced or recycled here.
- Unlabeled vocabulary or cultural claims: always name the specific place or community when a word, custom, or schedule differs by region.
- Treating 听说 as equally formal as 据...报道: match the framing expression to the register of the conversation.
