Volume II, Chapter 19: Problems, Reasons, and Solutions · Speak and Write Mandarin Chinese: Everyday Independence and Connected Communication

Chapter Overview and Learning Objectives

This chapter continues Unit IV by moving from goals and plans toward explaining problems and proposing solutions. You will learn to state a problem clearly, explain its reason using 因为...所以..., acknowledge a complication with 虽然...但是..., and propose a solution using language you have already been consolidating, including 应该, 最好, and 可以. The chapter task asks you to describe a real or realistic problem, explain why it happened, note a complicating factor, and propose a workable solution.

By the end of this chapter, you will be able to:

  1. State a problem clearly using 问题 and related vocabulary.
  2. Explain a reason and its result using 因为...所以...
  3. Acknowledge a complication or contrast using 虽然...但是...
  4. Propose a solution using 可以, 应该, or 最好.
  5. Write a short paragraph that explains a problem, its reason, a complication, and a proposed solution.

Communication Scenario

A classmate or coworker has come to you with a problem and wants to think it through together. You will listen to a short conversation about someone's problem, read a short message describing a problem and a proposed solution, discuss a problem of your own with a partner and propose a solution together, and write a paragraph explaining a problem, its reason, a complication, and your proposed solution.

发音 — Pronunciation Focus

Pronunciation Focus: Rhythm and Phrasing in Longer Sentences

Explaining a problem often requires longer sentences with several clauses joined together. This chapter continues developing control of connected rhythm and phrasing, building on tone sandhi patterns you have already consolidated, so that longer explanations remain clear and intelligible rather than running together.

PhrasePinyinNote
因为...所以...yīnwèi... suǒyǐ...pause briefly after the reason clause before beginning the result clause, so the listener can follow the connection
虽然...但是...suīrán... dànshì...slightly stress 但是 at the start of the second clause to signal the contrast clearly
不太严重bú tài yánzhòngbù becomes second tone before the fourth-tone tài, a pattern you have already practiced

Practice reading this chapter's model dialogue aloud in short phrases rather than word by word, pausing naturally at commas and clause boundaries so your Mandarin sounds connected rather than choppy.

语法 — Grammar and Sentence Patterns

Grammar and Sentence Patterns

1. Stating a Problem: 问题, 遇到, and 发生

问题 names a problem or question. 遇到 describes encountering a problem, while 发生 describes something happening or occurring, often used for events rather than the person experiencing them.

PatternUseExample
(我) 遇到了一个问题state that you encountered a problem我上个星期遇到了一个问题。
这件事是...发生的describe when or how something happened这件事是昨天晚上发生的。
这个问题影响了...describe the effect of a problem这个问题影响了我的学习。

遇到 and 发生 both build on the aspect system you have already consolidated with 了. Use 遇到 when you want to describe your own experience of encountering a problem, and 发生 when you want to describe the event itself.

2. Explaining a Reason: 因为...所以...

因为...所以... connects a reason clause with a result clause. In everyday spoken Mandarin, either 因为 or 所以 may be dropped if the meaning is already clear from context, but using both together is the clearest and most complete pattern for this level.

因为我最近工作很忙,所以我没有时间做饭。

Because I've been very busy with work lately, I haven't had time to cook.

PatternUseExample
因为 + reason,所以 + resultfull reason-result explanation因为房子的问题没有解决,所以我们决定搬家。
...,因为...state the result first, then add the reason我没有去,因为我遇到了一个问题。
...的原因是...name the reason directly as a noun phrase这个问题的原因是沟通不够。

3. Acknowledging a Complication: 虽然...但是...

虽然...但是... introduces a complication or contrast: the first clause states something true, and 但是 introduces a contrasting fact that still matters.

虽然这个问题不太严重,但是我们还是应该尽快解决。

Although this problem isn't too serious, we should still resolve it as soon as possible.

PatternUseExample
虽然 + fact,但是 + contrastfull concession pattern虽然情况有点儿复杂,但是我们有办法解决。
虽然...,可是...informal alternative to 但是虽然我很忙,可是我会尽量帮你。

虽然...但是... builds on the contrast-clause system introduced earlier in this unit. Do not use 虽然 alone without 但是 or 可是 in a full sentence; the two halves work together as a pair.

4. Proposing a Solution: 可以, 应该, and 最好

This chapter recycles 可以, 应该, and 最好 from earlier chapters and applies them specifically to proposing solutions to a stated problem.

PatternUseExample
我们可以 + verb phraseoffer a possible solution我们可以先跟老师解释一下情况。
你应该 + verb phraserecommend a solution as advice你应该早点儿告诉他这个问题。
最好的办法是...name the best solution as a noun phrase最好的办法是先解决最严重的问题。
对话 — Model Dialogue

Model Dialogue: 我的一个问题

Context: two coworkers, informal-neutral register, discussing a work problem after a meeting.

Xiao Zhang: You don't look too happy today, did you run into a problem? Xiao Lin: Yes, I ran into a problem. Because the client changed the plan, our time isn't enough now. Xiao Zhang: That situation sounds a bit complicated. Do you know the reason for the problem? Xiao Lin: I do. The reason is the client only told us the new requirements last week. Although the problem isn't especially serious, we still need to resolve it as soon as possible. Xiao Zhang: We could first explain the situation to the client and ask whether we can have a bit more time. Xiao Lin: That's a good solution. I think the best solution is to talk with the client first, then decide the next step.

给同学的一条消息

我最近遇到了一个问题。因为我们小组的项目时间改了,所以我现在的计划都要重新安排。虽然这个问题不算特别严重,但是它还是影响了我这个星期的学习时间。

我觉得这个问题的原因是我们一开始没有说清楚每个人的时间安排。我想了想,最好的办法是我们先开一个小会,把新的时间安排说清楚,然后再决定谁负责哪部分。你觉得这个办法怎么样?你有没有别的建议?
A message to a classmate. I recently ran into a problem. Because our group project's schedule changed, all my current plans need to be rearranged. Although this problem isn't especially serious, it has still affected my study time this week. I think the reason for this problem is that we didn't clearly state everyone's schedule at the start. I've thought about it, and the best solution is for us to first have a short meeting, clearly state the new schedule, and then decide who is responsible for which part. What do you think of this solution? Do you have any other suggestions?

  2. 这个问题的原因是什么?
  3. 这个人觉得最好的办法是什么?
写作 — Writing Workshop

Writing Workshop

Write a short paragraph (six to nine sentences) explaining a problem, its reason, a complication, and a proposed solution.

写作任务 — Writing task: Type your paragraph with Pinyin input. Your paragraph must include:

  1. One problem stated clearly, using 问题.
  2. A reason-result explanation using 因为...所以...
  3. A complication using 虽然...但是...
  4. A proposed solution using 可以, 应该, or 最好的办法是...

修改清单 — Editing checklist:

  • The problem, reason, complication, and solution are clearly distinguished from each other.
  • 因为...所以... is used correctly to connect a reason and a result.
  • 虽然...但是... is used correctly to introduce a genuine complication or contrast.
  • The proposed solution uses 可以, 应该, or 最好的办法是... appropriately.
  • Chinese punctuation (,。?!) is used correctly throughout.
  • No new grammar beyond this chapter and prior consolidated systems is required to complete the task.

Culture and Communication

Culture Note — Explaining problems without assigning blame

Among many Mandarin speakers, explaining a problem in a workplace or community setting often focuses on the situation and the reason (原因) rather than directly assigning blame to a specific person. Phrases such as 情况有点儿复杂 or 这个问题的原因是... allow a speaker to describe a difficult situation while keeping the tone constructive and focused on finding a solution. This approach is especially common when discussing a problem with someone of higher status or when several people share responsibility for the outcome, though individual speakers and situations vary.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Using 虽然 without 但是 or 可是: 虽然 needs a paired contrast clause; a sentence with 虽然 alone sounds incomplete.
  • Dropping both 因为 and 所以 too early: at this level, keep both halves of 因为...所以... in your writing so the reason-result relationship stays clear, even though spoken Mandarin sometimes drops one half.
  • Confusing 问题 and 办法: 问题 names the problem; 办法 names the solution or method. They are not interchangeable.
  • Overusing 尽量 productively: 尽量 is receptive at this level; rely on 可以, 应该, and 最好 to propose your own solutions.
  • Losing rhythm in longer sentences: remember to pause briefly at clause boundaries in 因为...所以... and 虽然...但是... sentences so the connection between clauses stays clear.
