从B1到B2:表达更清楚

Volume III, Chapter 1: From B1 to B2 — Expressing Yourself More Clearly · Speak and Write Mandarin Chinese: Independent Communication and Advanced Expression

Chapter Overview and Learning Objectives

Welcome to Volume III. This chapter introduces no major new grammar and no new high-burden character set. Instead, it resets your Mandarin for the B1 → B2 transition by asking you to combine sentences you already control — descriptions, routines, plans, and simple reason-result and contrast patterns — into one connected paragraph rather than a list of separate sentences. You will also begin relying more on characters and less on Pinyin, and you will meet a small set of new vocabulary for talking about your neighborhood and community life.

By the end of this chapter, you will be able to:

  1. Combine several short, previously learned sentences into one connected spoken or written paragraph.
  2. Describe your neighborhood and community life using a small set of new productive vocabulary.
  3. Distinguish more clearly between everyday conversational register and a slightly more careful, organized register.
  4. Read short character-forward paragraphs with reduced Pinyin support.
  5. Complete an integrated listening, reading, speaking, and writing task that presents yourself and your community in one organized paragraph.

Communication Scenario

You are joining a new, more advanced Mandarin class. On the first day, the instructor asks each student to introduce themselves — not with three short disconnected sentences as before, but as one short connected paragraph describing who they are, their daily life, and the neighborhood or community where they live. You will listen to a model self-introduction, read a written version of a similar introduction, practice combining your own sentences with a partner, and write your own connected paragraph.

  1. You will listen to a new classmate's connected self-introduction.
  2. You will read a written paragraph that connects personal background with neighborhood description.
  3. You will practice combining short sentences into one paragraph with a partner.
  4. You will write your own connected self-introduction paragraph.
生词 — Core Vocabulary

Core Vocabulary: Neighborhood and Community Life

This chapter introduces a small set of new productive vocabulary connected to community and public life. All other vocabulary in this chapter is recycled from Volume II.

汉字PinyinPart/FunctionMeaningExample
社区shèqūnouncommunity我们的社区有一个小公园。
邻居línjūnounneighbor我的邻居都很热情。
附近fùjìnnoun/adverbnearby; vicinity附近有一家超市。
方便fāngbiànadjectiveconvenient住在这里很方便。
安静ānjìngadjectivequiet; peaceful这个社区很安静。
热闹rènaoadjectivelively; bustling周末这条街很热闹。
搬家bānjiāverb-objectto move house我们去年搬家了。
环境huánjìngnounenvironment; surroundings这里的环境不错。

These words are productive from this chapter forward. All other vocabulary in this chapter — greetings, daily routine, family, likes and dislikes, basic descriptions — is recycled from Volume II and should already be familiar.

发音 — Pronunciation Focus

Pronunciation Focus: -n versus -ng Finals

This chapter reviews a contrast that becomes more important as your sentences grow longer: the difference between finals ending in -n and finals ending in -ng. English speakers often blur this distinction, but in Mandarin it can change the meaning of a word.

-n final-ng finalNote
安 ān昂 ángkeep the tongue tip lightly touching behind the upper teeth for -n; let the back of the tongue rise for -ng
您 nín您 versus 能 néngdo not let -n drift toward -ng, especially in fast speech
安静 ānjìng—practice the -n in 安 and the -ng in 静 within the same word without blending them

As you begin combining sentences into longer paragraphs in this chapter, keep every -n and -ng final distinct, even when speaking at a natural pace. This is a review and refinement target, not a new sound system.

语法 — Grammar and Sentence Patterns

Grammar and Sentence Patterns: From Sentences to Paragraphs

This chapter introduces no new grammar. It asks you to combine grammar you already control — descriptive sentences, 因为...所以..., and 虽然...但是... from Volume II — into one connected paragraph instead of a list of separate sentences.

1. Connecting Background and Description

PatternUseExample
我是..., 我...connect identity to an ongoing action or habit我是学生,我每天都坐公交车上学。
...,而且...add a related detail smoothly我们的社区很安静,而且附近有一个小公园。

2. Reviewing 因为...所以... for Community Description

PatternUseExample
因为 + reason,所以 + resultexplain why a place is convenient, quiet, or lively因为附近有超市和地铁站,所以住在这里很方便。

3. Reviewing 虽然...但是... for Balanced Description

PatternUseExample
虽然 + one quality,但是 + a contrasting qualitydescribe a place with more than one side虽然我们的社区很安静,但是附近的大街很热闹。

The new skill in this chapter is not a new grammar point — it is using these familiar patterns one after another, in order, to build a short paragraph instead of three separate answers.

对话 — Model Dialogue

Model Introduction: 新同学的自我介绍

Context: a new student introduces herself to the class on the first day of a more advanced Mandarin course; neutral, semi-formal classroom register.

大家好,我叫王小美。我是一名学生,平时喜欢看书和跑步。我家在城市的东边,我们的社区很安静,而且附近有一个小公园,我常常去那里跑步。因为附近有超市、银行和地铁站,所以住在这里很方便。虽然我们的社区比较安静,但是附近的大街到了周末就很热闹,有很多人去那里买东西、吃饭。我很喜欢这个环境,希望大家也可以跟我说说你们的社区。

Hello everyone, my name is Wang Xiaomei. I'm a student, and in my free time I like reading and running. My home is on the east side of the city; our community is very quiet, and there's a small park nearby where I often go running. Because there's a supermarket, a bank, and a subway station nearby, it's very convenient to live here. Although our community is fairly quiet, the main street nearby gets lively on weekends, with many people going there to shop and eat. I really like this environment, and I hope you can also tell me about your communities.

同学:你搬到这个社区多久了?
王小美:我们去年搬家了,到现在差不多一年了。

Classmate: How long have you been in this community? Wang Xiaomei: We moved last year, so it's been about a year now.

练习 — Guided Practice

Guided Practice

A. Combine each pair of short sentences into one sentence using the pattern indicated.

  1. 我们的社区很安静。附近有一个小公园。(...,而且...)
  2. 附近有超市和地铁站。住在这里很方便。(因为...所以...)
  3. 我们的社区很安静。附近的大街很热闹。(虽然...但是...)

B. Complete each sentence about your own neighborhood with your own information.

  1. 我们的社区______。
  2. 因为附近有______,所以______。
  3. 虽然______,但是______。

C. Combine your answers from Part B into one short connected paragraph (three to four sentences).

听力 — Listening Practice

Listening Practice

Listening script for independent use. Read aloud slowly, then at a natural pace, or have a fluent speaker record it.

一段介绍 — A short introduction:
大家好,我叫李明。我在一家小公司工作,平时不太忙。我家附近有一条很热闹的街,那里有很多小吃店和商店。因为离我家很近,所以我常常晚上去那里散步、吃东西。虽然那条街很热闹,但是我住的这条小巷子很安静,晚上睡觉一点儿也不吵。

QuestionAnswer
李明家附近的那条街怎么样?______
李明为什么常常去那条街?______
李明住的地方晚上安静吗?______
口语 — Speaking Practice

Speaking Practice

交际任务 — Communicative task: 介绍你自己和你的社区

With a partner or small group, introduce yourself as you would on the first day of a new class: your name, what you do, and a short connected description of your neighborhood using at least one 因为...所以... sentence and one 虽然...但是... sentence. Your listener should ask at least one follow-up question, such as how long you have lived there or what is nearby.

独立练习 — Solo alternative

Record yourself giving the full introduction described above as one connected paragraph, without pausing between each idea as if they were separate answers.

阅读 — Reading Practice

Reading Practice

Read the paragraph below, then answer the questions. Pinyin support is reduced in this reading; try to read the characters directly before checking the gloss.

我叫张伟,是一名老师,在附近的一所小学教书。我们家去年搬家了,现在住的社区离学校很近,走路只要十分钟。这个社区不大,但是环境很不错,邻居们也都很热情。因为附近有菜市场和小超市,所以买东西很方便。虽然社区里没有大公园,但是有一个小小的花园,晚上很多人在那里散步、聊天。
My name is Zhang Wei, and I'm a teacher at a nearby elementary school. Our family moved last year, and the community we live in now is very close to the school — just a ten-minute walk. This community isn't large, but the environment is quite good, and the neighbors are all very warm. Because there's a vegetable market and a small supermarket nearby, shopping is very convenient. Although the community doesn't have a big park, there is a small garden, where many people walk and chat in the evening.
  1. 张伟在哪里工作?
  2. 张伟的社区为什么买东西很方便?
  3. 张伟的社区里有大公园吗?晚上人们在哪里散步?
写作 — Writing Workshop

Writing Workshop: Connected Self-Introduction Paragraph

Write a connected paragraph (six to eight sentences) introducing yourself and describing your neighborhood or community, following the model in this chapter.

写作任务 — Writing task: Type your paragraph using Pinyin input. Your paragraph must include:

  1. A brief personal introduction (name, occupation or role, one daily-life detail).
  2. A description of your neighborhood using at least two words from this chapter's new vocabulary (社区, 邻居, 附近, 方便, 安静, 热闹, 搬家, 环境).
  3. One reason-result sentence using 因为...所以...
  4. One contrast sentence using 虽然...但是...
  5. A closing sentence connecting back to your overall impression of the neighborhood.

修改清单 — Editing checklist:

  • The paragraph reads as one connected passage, not a list of separate sentences.
  • At least two new vocabulary words from this chapter appear naturally.
  • 因为...所以... and 虽然...但是... are each used correctly and only once.
  • Chinese punctuation (,。?!) is used correctly throughout.
  • No grammar beyond what was consolidated in Volume II is required to complete the task.

Culture and Communication

Culture Note — Describing where you live

In many Mandarin-speaking contexts, describing one's neighborhood often balances practical details, such as convenience and nearby services, with a comment on atmosphere, such as whether it is quiet or lively. Speakers commonly acknowledge both sides of a place, as in the 虽然...但是... pattern practiced in this chapter, rather than describing a neighborhood in only one dimension. This tendency is common in many settings, though individual speakers and communities vary, and more direct single-impression descriptions are also common, especially in casual conversation among friends.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Answering with three separate short sentences instead of one paragraph: this chapter asks you to link ideas together, not to list them.
  • Blurring -n and -ng finals: keep 安 (ān) and 昂 (áng), or 您 (nín) and 能 (néng), clearly distinct even in fast speech.
  • Using 虽然 without 但是 or 可是: keep the concession pattern paired, as consolidated in Volume II.
  • Overusing Pinyin for words you already know: try reading and writing familiar words directly in characters before turning to Pinyin support.
  • Introducing untaught grammar or vocabulary: this chapter should showcase fluent combination of systems you already control, not new material.

Chapter Summary

This chapter introduced no new grammar system. Instead, it asked you to combine familiar descriptive sentences, 因为...所以..., and 虽然...但是... into one connected self-introduction paragraph, while adding a small set of new productive vocabulary for describing neighborhoods and community life (社区, 邻居, 附近, 方便, 安静, 热闹, 搬家, 环境). You also reviewed the -n versus -ng final contrast and practiced reading a character-forward paragraph with reduced Pinyin support. This chapter resets your Mandarin for the more independent, connected communication expected across Volume III.

Chapter Review

部分 A — 听力和阅读 (Listening and Reading)

1. I can follow a short connected self-introduction describing someone's life and neighborhood.

2. I can read a character-forward paragraph with reduced Pinyin support and answer questions about it.

部分 B — 口语 (Speaking)

1. I can introduce myself and describe my neighborhood as one connected spoken paragraph.

部分 C — 写作 (Writing)

1. I can write a connected paragraph introducing myself and describing my community, using reason-result and contrast patterns correctly.

Recognition Check

Say each of the following aloud, paying attention to -n versus -ng: 社区, 邻居, 附近, 方便, 安静, 热闹. If any of these feel uncertain, review the pronunciation and vocabulary sections before continuing to Chapter 2.

Looking Ahead

现在你会做什么 — What you can do now

You can introduce yourself and describe your neighborhood as one connected paragraph, combining background description, reason-result, and contrast patterns, while relying more on characters and less on Pinyin.

继续前进 — Continuing on

Chapter 2, 经验、变化和背景 (Experience, Change, and Background), builds on this reset by developing extended narration, aspect integration, backgrounding, and topic chains, so that you can describe not only where you live now but how your life and surroundings have changed over time.
