原因、结果和目的
Chapter Overview and Learning Objectives
Chapter 2 taught you to narrate a change over time. This chapter asks you to explain that change: why it happened, what it led to, and what you were trying to achieve. You will organize explanations using 因为...所以..., state purpose with 为了, and mark outcomes with 结果. These are not new sentence types — reason-result and purpose framing have been part of your Mandarin since Volume II — but this chapter develops them into fuller, more explicit explanatory writing and speech, and connects them to the narration skills from Chapter 2.
By the end of this chapter, you will be able to:
- Explain a cause and its result using 因为...所以... in both spoken and written form.
- State a goal or purpose behind an action using 为了.
- Report an outcome using 结果, distinguishing it from a simple sequence marked by 后来.
- Combine cause, purpose, and result in a short explanatory paragraph that also narrates events.
- Complete an integrated listening, reading, speaking, and writing task that explains why something happened.
Communication Scenario
A classmate wants to know why you made a recent decision — choosing a class, changing a habit, or making a change like the one you described in Chapter 2. You will listen to someone explain why they started a new habit, read a short passage explaining why someone made a decision, practice explaining your own reasons and goals with a partner, and write a short paragraph that explains a decision using cause, purpose, and result.
- You will listen to someone explain the reason and result behind a decision.
- You will read a passage that explains a decision using cause, purpose, and outcome.
- You will practice explaining your own reasons and goals with a partner.
- You will write a short paragraph explaining a decision you made.
Core Vocabulary: Explaining Reasons and Results
This chapter introduces a small set of new productive vocabulary connected to explaining causes, purposes, and results, continuing the community and public-life domain from Chapters 1 and 2.
| 汉字 | Pinyin | Part/Function | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 原因 | yuányīn | noun | reason; cause | 你能告诉我原因吗? |
| 结果 | jiéguǒ | noun/conjunction | result; as a result | 结果他决定换一份工作。 |
| 目的 | mùdì | noun | purpose; goal | 我学习中文的目的是找一份好工作。 |
| 决定 | juédìng | verb/noun | to decide; decision | 我决定搬到一个新城市。 |
| 机会 | jīhuì | noun | opportunity; chance | 这是一个很好的机会。 |
| 压力 | yālì | noun | pressure; stress | 工作的压力越来越大。 |
| 为了 | wèile | coverb | in order to; for the purpose of | 为了健康,他每天都运动。 |
| 于是 | yúshì | conjunction | so; thereupon | 我觉得很累,于是决定早点儿睡觉。 |
These words are productive from this chapter forward. All other vocabulary in this chapter — narration and change vocabulary from Chapter 2, and community and daily-life vocabulary from earlier chapters — is recycled and should already be familiar.
Pronunciation Focus: Rhythm in Explanatory Sentences
This chapter continues the -n versus -ng work from Chapters 1 and 2, and begins paying closer attention to syllable rhythm across longer explanatory sentences, especially those built from two clauses joined by 因为...所以... or a purpose clause with 为了.
| Phrase | Note |
|---|---|
| 原因 yuányīn | keep both syllables level and clear; do not rush the second syllable |
| 因为...所以... yīnwèi...suǒyǐ... | give each clause its own small pause; do not run the two clauses together as one breath group |
| 为了健康 wèile jiànkāng | practice the -n final in 健 and the -ng final in 康 without blending them |
As explanatory sentences grow longer, break them into clear clause-sized breath groups rather than speaking the whole sentence in one uninterrupted rush. This is a continued refinement target, not a new sound system.
Grammar and Sentence Patterns: Explaining Cause, Purpose, and Result
This chapter develops explanatory language by expanding the reason-result and purpose systems you already use into fuller, more explicit explanations, and by adding 结果 as a way to mark outcomes distinct from simple time sequence.
1. Explaining Cause and Result with 因为...所以...
| Pattern | Use | Example |
|---|---|---|
| 因为 + reason,所以 + result | explicitly connect a cause to its result | 因为工作的压力越来越大,所以我决定换一份工作。 |
| 因为 or 所以 alone | use only one half when the other is already clear from context | 所以我决定换一份工作。 |
2. Stating Purpose with 为了
| Pattern | Use | Example |
|---|---|---|
| 为了 + goal,Subject + Verb Phrase | state the purpose behind an action, placed before the main clause | 为了找到更好的机会,我开始学习新的技能。 |
3. Marking Outcomes with 结果
| Pattern | Use | Example |
|---|---|---|
| ..., 结果 + outcome | introduce an outcome, often one that was not fully expected or planned | 我申请了那份工作,结果真的被录取了。 |
结果 differs from 后来 (Chapter 2): 后来 simply continues a time sequence, while 结果 frames what follows as the outcome of what came before. Compare: 后来我换了工作 (a next event) versus 结果我换了工作 (the change is presented as a consequence).
4. Combining Cause, Purpose, and Result
| Pattern | Use | Example |
|---|---|---|
| 为了..., 因为..., 所以..., 结果... | build a short, fully connected explanation across several clauses | 为了减少压力,我开始每天运动。因为坚持了三个月,所以身体好了很多,结果我现在每天都很有精神。 |
The new skill in this chapter is combining cause, purpose, and result markers into one coherent explanation — not new individual grammar points, but a fuller, more deliberate use of connectors you have already met.
Model Explanation: 我为什么换了工作
Context: two classmates talk after class about why one of them changed jobs; casual, familiar register.
小美:你上次说你换工作了,能告诉我原因吗?
大伟:可以啊。因为以前那份工作的压力越来越大,所以我决定找一个新机会。
小美:那你为什么选了现在这份工作?
大伟:为了有更多学习新技能的机会,我申请了这份工作,结果真的被录取了。
小美:结果你现在觉得怎么样?
大伟:结果比我想的还好,工作虽然也不轻松,但是我觉得很有意思,压力也没有以前那么大了。
Xiaomei: You mentioned last time that you changed jobs — can you tell me the reason? Dawei: Sure. Because the pressure at my old job kept getting bigger, I decided to look for a new opportunity. Xiaomei: So why did you choose this current job? Dawei: In order to have more chances to learn new skills, I applied for this job, and it turned out I actually got hired. Xiaomei: So how do you feel now, as a result? Dawei: It turned out better than I expected — the work isn't exactly easy either, but I find it interesting, and the pressure isn't as big as before.
Guided Practice
A. Complete each sentence with 因为, 所以, 为了, or 结果.
- ______工作的压力越来越大,______我决定换一份工作。
- ______找到更好的机会,我开始学习新的技能。
- 我申请了那份工作,______真的被录取了。
B. Combine each pair of sentences using 因为...所以... or 为了.
- 工作的压力越来越大。我决定找一个新机会。(因为...所以...)
- 我想减少压力。我开始每天运动。(为了)
C. Write two or three sentences explaining a decision you made, using at least one cause-result clause and one purpose clause, and ending with a sentence marked by 结果.
Listening Practice
Listening script for independent use. Read aloud slowly, then at a natural pace, or have a fluent speaker record it.
一段解释 — A short explanation:
因为我一直觉得每天开车上班很累,所以我决定搬到公司附近住。为了找到合适的房子,我看了差不多两个月,结果找到了一个又方便又便宜的地方。搬家以后,我每天走路上班,压力也小了很多,结果我现在比以前更喜欢我的工作了。
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| 说话人为什么决定搬到公司附近住? | ______ |
| 说话人为了找房子做了什么? | ______ |
| 搬家的结果怎么样? | ______ |
Speaking Practice
交际任务 — Communicative task: 解释一个决定
With a partner, explain a decision you made — choosing a class, changing a habit, or a change like the one you described in Chapter 2. Use 因为...所以... to explain the cause, 为了 to state your goal, and end with a sentence using 结果 to describe the outcome. Your listener should ask at least one follow-up question about your reason or your goal.
独立练习 — Solo alternative
Record yourself explaining the same decision as one connected passage, moving clearly from cause, to purpose, to result.
Reading Practice
Read the paragraph below, then answer the questions. Pinyin support remains reduced in this reading, continuing from Chapters 1 and 2.
- 王强为什么开始想找别的机会?
- 王强为了什么决定去学一个新专业?
- 王强的决定,结果怎么样?
Writing Workshop: Explaining a Decision
Write a connected explanatory paragraph (six to eight sentences) explaining a decision you made, following the model in this chapter.
写作任务 — Writing task: Type your paragraph using Pinyin input. Your paragraph must include:
- One sentence using 因为...所以... to explain the reason behind your decision.
- One sentence using 为了 to state your goal.
- One sentence using 结果 to describe an outcome, distinct from a simple 后来 sequence.
- At least two words from this chapter's new vocabulary (原因, 结果, 目的, 决定, 机会, 压力, 为了, 于是).
- A closing sentence summarizing how you feel about the decision now.
修改清单 — Editing checklist:
- The paragraph reads as one connected explanation, not a list of separate sentences.
- 因为...所以..., 为了, and 结果 are each used correctly and in a context where they are appropriate.
- 结果 is used to mark an outcome, not simply to continue a time sequence better expressed with 后来.
- At least two new vocabulary words from this chapter appear naturally.
- Chinese punctuation (,。?!) is used correctly throughout.
- No grammar beyond what was consolidated in earlier chapters and reviewed in this chapter is required to complete the task.
Culture and Communication
When explaining a significant personal decision, such as changing jobs or fields of study, many Mandarin speakers take care to lay out the reasoning clearly and patiently for family members, since group input and understanding are often valued when a decision affects the wider family. This pattern is common in many everyday explanations, though individual families and speakers vary, and some prefer a brief, direct account, especially among close friends or in casual settings.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Using both 因为 and 所以 when only one is needed: in natural speech, one half is often dropped once the connection is clear from context; using both every time can sound overly formal or repetitive.
- Confusing 结果 and 后来: 后来 simply continues a time sequence, while 结果 frames what follows as a consequence of what came before.
- Placing 为了 after the main clause: the purpose clause with 为了 normally comes before the main clause it explains, not after it.
- Treating 因为 as equivalent to English "because" in every position: 因为 introduces a reason clause and does not need a comma-linked "so" in English, but Mandarin generally pairs it with 所以 when both halves are stated.
- Introducing untaught grammar or vocabulary: this chapter should showcase fluent explanation using systems you already control, combined in a new way.
Chapter Summary
This chapter developed explanatory language by expanding cause-result explanations with 因为...所以..., purpose statements with 为了, and outcome marking with 结果, distinguishing 结果 from the simple sequencing marker 后来. You practiced combining cause, purpose, and result into one coherent explanation and added a small set of new productive vocabulary for explaining decisions (原因, 结果, 目的, 决定, 机会, 压力, 为了, 于是). You continued refining rhythm and clause-level pausing in longer explanatory sentences. This chapter prepares you to summarize and paraphrase information from other sources in Chapter 4.
Chapter Review
