综合任务一:故事和分析
Chapter Overview and Learning Objectives
This chapter is the Unit I assessment. It introduces no new grammar, no new characters beyond ordinary recycling, and no new pronunciation system. Instead, it asks you to bring together everything Chapters 1 through 4 built: telling a connected story about a past experience (Chapter 2), explaining that experience using cause, result, and purpose (Chapter 3), and reporting and summarizing what someone else said about a similar experience (Chapter 4). You will listen to and read source material, then produce your own connected story paired with a short analytical summary — in speech and in writing.
By the end of this chapter, you will be able to:
- Narrate a personal experience or change in circumstances using appropriate aspect particles (了, 过, 着) and topic chains.
- Explain the causes, results, and purpose behind that experience using 因为/所以, 为了, and 结果.
- Report and summarize what another person said about a related experience, using 说/觉得/认为, 听说, 据...说, 简单来说, and 换句话说.
- Interpret controlled listening and reading input and respond with an organized spoken and written analysis.
- Complete an integrated listening, reading, speaking, and writing task that combines narration and analytical summary at the B1–B2 boundary.
Communication Scenario
A community website is collecting short "life change" stories. You will listen to one story, read a second, and then produce your own combined story-and-analysis piece for the same collection: what happened, why it happened, and what someone else said or thought about a similar situation.
- You will listen to a short personal narrative and identify the sequence of events and their causes.
- You will read a second personal narrative and identify its main points and the writer's reasoning.
- You will orally narrate and explain your own (real or invented) experience, incorporating reported information from a friend or family member.
- You will write a connected story-and-analysis paragraph set that narrates, explains, and reports/summarizes.
Core Vocabulary: Assessment Recycling
This chapter introduces no new productive vocabulary. It recycles vocabulary from the community and public-life domain of Chapters 1 through 4, with particular attention to the narration vocabulary of Chapter 2, the cause/result/purpose vocabulary of Chapter 3, and the reporting and summary vocabulary of Chapter 4.
| 汉字 | Pinyin | Part/Function | Meaning | Chapter of Origin |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 经验 | jīngyàn | noun | experience | Chapter 2 |
| 改变 | gǎibiàn | verb/noun | to change; a change | Chapter 2 |
| 因为...所以... | yīnwèi...suǒyǐ... | connector | because...so... | Chapter 3 |
| 为了 | wèile | connector | in order to | Chapter 3 |
| 结果 | jiéguǒ | noun/connector | result; as a result | Chapter 3 |
| 摘要 | zhāiyào | noun | summary | Chapter 4 |
| 转述 | zhuǎnshù | verb | to relate secondhand | Chapter 4 |
| 简单来说 | jiǎndān láishuō | discourse marker | simply put | Chapter 4 |
| 换句话说 | huàn jù huà shuō | discourse marker | in other words | Chapter 4 |
No unstudied vocabulary is required for independent production in this chapter. Any additional words appearing in the listening or reading passages are glossed and are receptive only.
Pronunciation Focus: Sustained Tone Accuracy Across a Longer Turn
This chapter introduces no new pronunciation system. The assessment focus is maintaining accurate tones, tone sandhi, and neutral tone across a longer, connected turn — a full narrated-and-explained story — rather than in isolated sentences. Pay particular attention to third-tone sandhi in strings of low tones, the toneless 说 in 听说, and clear separation of the reporting verb 说 from the reported clause that follows it.
| Feature | Review Note |
|---|---|
| third-tone sandhi | watch for strings such as 我也想 where more than one third tone occurs in sequence |
| toneless 说 in 听说 | keep 说 light and unstressed in 听说, but full and clear in 他说 |
| rhythm across connectors | 因为/所以, 为了, and 结果 should each begin a clear breath group, not blur into the surrounding clause |
Tone accuracy remains a structural requirement for this assessment, but feedback should prioritize intelligibility across the full turn rather than perfect isolated-syllable production.
Grammar and Sentence Patterns: Combining Narration, Explanation, and Report
This chapter introduces no new grammar. It requires you to combine three systems already consolidated in Chapters 1 through 4 within a single connected piece of communication.
1. Narration (Chapter 2 Review)
| Pattern | Use | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Topic + time expression + 了/过/着 + event | sequence events and background in a personal story | 大学的时候,我在一家小公司实习过。 |
2. Cause, Result, and Purpose (Chapter 3 Review)
| Pattern | Use | Example |
|---|---|---|
| 因为...,所以... | explain why something happened | 因为工作压力太大,所以我决定换一个方向。 |
| 为了 + goal,+ action | explain the purpose behind a decision | 为了有更多的选择,我去学了一个新专业。 |
| 结果,... | introduce the outcome of a decision or event | 结果,我找到了一份更适合我的工作。 |
3. Reporting and Summarizing (Chapter 4 Review)
| Pattern | Use | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Person + 说/觉得/认为 + clause | report what someone said or felt about a similar experience | 我朋友说,她也遇到过同样的问题。 |
| 听说 / 据...说 | mark secondhand information | 听说很多人都做过这样的决定。 |
| 简单来说 / 换句话说 | summarize or restate the point | 简单来说,这个改变虽然不轻松,但是很值得。 |
The assessment task requires you to move fluidly among these three systems within one connected piece — narrating events, explaining why they happened, and reporting what someone else thought about a similar experience — rather than treating them as separate, unrelated exercises.
Model Story and Analysis: 我的一次重要改变
Context: a learner tells a friend about a past decision, combining narration, explanation, and a reported comparison; semi-formal conversational register.
Xiaoyu: You mentioned before that you changed jobs — can you tell me about it? Daming: Sure. After I graduated from university, I worked at a large company for two years first. Because the work kept becoming less interesting, I started thinking about changing direction. Xiaoyu: So what did you do after that? Daming: In order to find work that suited me better, I went and took part in a training program. As a result, I met my current boss — his company happened to need someone like me. Xiaoyu: Simply put, this change was successful? Daming: Right, I think so. I've heard that a lot of colleagues have made similar decisions, and according to a friend, he's also been much happier since changing jobs. In other words, it's worth it to be brave enough to change.
Guided Practice
A. Complete each sentence with 因为/所以, 为了, 结果, 说/觉得, or 简单来说/换句话说, choosing the connector that fits the meaning.
- ______工作压力太大,______他决定换工作。
- ______有更多的选择,她去学了一个新专业。
- 他准备了很久,______,他找到了一份很好的工作。
- 我朋友______,她也遇到过同样的问题。
- ______,这个决定虽然不轻松,但是很值得。
B. Combine the three short notes below into one connected story-and-analysis sentence set, using narration, at least one cause/result/purpose connector, and one reporting or summary marker.
- 笔记一:小李大学学的是别的专业。
- 笔记二:她后来对设计产生了兴趣。
- 笔记三:一个朋友说,她现在的工作让她很有成就感。
C. Outline (in note form) your own story-and-analysis response before the Practical Performance Task: one narrated event, one cause/result/purpose explanation, and one reported comparison from someone you know.
Listening Practice
Listening script for independent use. Read aloud slowly, then at a natural pace, or have a fluent speaker record it.
一段个人故事 — A personal story:
陈老师以前在一家医院工作,后来决定去当老师。她说,因为她一直很喜欢跟年轻人交流,所以她开始考虑换工作。为了实现这个想法,她一边工作一边准备考试,花了差不多两年时间。结果,她通过了考试,找到了现在这份教学工作。她说,虽然一开始收入比以前少,但是她每天都觉得很有意义。据她的一个同事说,很多老师都是从别的行业转过来的。简单来说,陈老师觉得这个决定非常值得。
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| 陈老师为什么决定换工作?(用因为/所以回答) | ______ |
| 她为了实现这个想法做了什么?结果怎么样? | ______ |
| 简单来说,陈老师对这个决定的看法是什么? | ______ |
Speaking Practice
交际任务 — Communicative task: 故事和分析
With a partner, tell the story of a real or invented experience (a decision, a change, an accomplishment). Include at least one narrated sequence of events, one cause/result/purpose explanation, and one reported comparison ("我朋友说...", "听说...", or "据...说"). Close with a one-sentence summary using 简单来说 or 换句话说. Your partner should ask at least one follow-up question and then briefly restate your story back to you in their own words.
独立练习 — Solo alternative
Record yourself telling and analyzing your story in under two minutes, as though presenting it for the community website described in the Communication Scenario.
Reading Practice
Read the paragraph below, then answer the questions. Pinyin support remains reduced in this reading, continuing from earlier chapters in this unit.
- 周明为什么决定学编程?(用因为/所以回答)
- 他为了改变方向做了什么?结果怎么样?
- 同事怎么看公司里像周明这样的人?
Writing Workshop: Story and Analysis Paragraph Set
Write a connected story-and-analysis piece (eight to ten sentences) about a real or invented experience of your own, following the model of the Reading Practice passage above.
写作任务 — Writing task: Type your paragraphs using Pinyin input. Your writing must include:
- A narrated sequence of at least two events, using appropriate aspect particles (了, 过, 着).
- At least one cause/result explanation with 因为...所以... and one purpose or result sentence with 为了 or 结果.
- At least one reported comparison using 说/觉得/认为, 听说, or 据...说, describing what someone else said or thought about a similar experience.
- One closing summary sentence using 简单来说 or 换句话说.
- No direct quotation — report and paraphrase rather than copying exact words.
修改清单 — Editing checklist:
- The story presents a clear, connected sequence of events with appropriate aspect particles.
- The explanation clearly connects cause, purpose, and result to the events narrated.
- Reported information is clearly marked and distinguished from the writer's own experience.
- The closing sentence accurately summarizes the point of the story.
- Chinese punctuation (,。?!) is used correctly throughout, with no unnecessary quotation marks.
- No grammar or vocabulary beyond what was consolidated in Chapters 1 through 4 is required to complete the task.
Culture and Communication
When telling a personal story of change or difficulty in Mandarin, many speakers pair the narration with an explanation of reasoning (因为/所以, 为了) and often close with a brief evaluative summary (简单来说, 换句话说), rather than leaving the listener to draw their own conclusion. This pattern is common in casual conversation, interviews, and short written accounts alike, though the amount of explicit explanation and summary can vary by speaker, setting, and how personal the topic feels.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Narrating without explaining: a story-and-analysis task needs both the sequence of events and the reasoning behind them — do not leave out 因为/所以, 为了, or 结果.
- Explaining without narrating: do not replace the story with a list of reasons; events still need clear time sequencing and aspect marking.
- Dropping the reported comparison: the assessment requires connecting your story to what someone else said or experienced, not just describing your own experience in isolation.
- Introducing untaught grammar or vocabulary: this chapter should showcase fluent, connected use of systems from Chapters 1 through 4, not new material.
- Skipping the closing summary: end with 简单来说 or 换句话说 to give the piece a clear analytical close, not just a final event.
Chapter Summary
This chapter is the Unit I assessment. It introduced no new grammar, vocabulary, or pronunciation system. Instead, it required you to combine narration (Chapter 2), cause/result/purpose explanation (Chapter 3), and reporting and summarizing (Chapter 4) into one connected story-and-analysis task, tested through listening, reading, speaking, and writing. This chapter closes Unit I. Unit II, beginning with Chapter 6, moves into news, public information, technology, institutions, and formal correspondence.
