新闻和公共信息
Chapter Overview and Learning Objectives
This chapter opens Unit II and moves your Mandarin from personal narration into the language of news and public information. You will learn how Mandarin news items and public announcements are typically framed — who is reporting the information, where it comes from, and how a short report is organized — and you will begin using 根据 and 通过 as coverbs to introduce a source or a means, alongside the productive concession pattern 虽然...但是. You will also expand your public-information character set: words that appear on notices, in short news items, and in everyday announcements.
By the end of this chapter, you will be able to:
- Recognize and use basic news-style framing: identifying a source with 据...报道, 根据, and naming who said or reported something.
- Use 通过 and 根据 as coverbs to introduce a means or a source of information.
- Use 虽然...但是 productively to present a contrast within a short report or public statement.
- Read short public notices, announcements, and simplified news items with reduced Pinyin support.
- Listen to and summarize the main point of a short news item or public announcement.
- Write a short, source-framed news-style paragraph on a familiar public topic.
Communication Scenario
A community bulletin board and a local online news page both cover the same event: a new bike-share program opening in your area. You will listen to and read short reports about it, then write and present your own short news-style summary for a class news bulletin.
- You will listen to a short radio-style news item and identify its main point and source.
- You will read a public notice and a short online news item about the same topic.
- You will orally summarize a piece of public information for a partner, naming your source.
- You will write a short news-style paragraph that frames information with a source and includes at least one contrast using 虽然...但是.
Core Vocabulary: News and Public Information
| 汉字 | Pinyin | Part/Function | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 新闻 | xīnwén | noun | news | 我每天都看新闻。 |
| 报道 | bàodào | verb/noun | to report; a report | 这个消息是谁报道的? |
| 消息 | xiāoxi | noun | news item; piece of information | 我听到一个好消息。 |

| 通过 | tōngguò | coverb | through; by means of | 我们通过学校的网站看到了这个消息。 |
| 公告 | gōnggào | noun | public notice; announcement | 请大家看一下这个公告。 |

These words are productive for this chapter and its recycling in Chapters 7 through 10. Additional domain-specific words appearing in the listening or reading passages are glossed and remain receptive only.
Pronunciation Focus: News-Style Rhythm and Reporting Verbs
News and public-announcement style in Mandarin tends to move at a measured, evenly paced rhythm, with a clear pause after the source phrase before the reported information begins. Practice separating the source-framing phrase from the content that follows it, and keep 报道 and 根据 clear and unrushed at the start of a sentence.
| Feature | Review Note |
|---|---|
| pause after source phrase | leave a brief, natural pause after 据...报道 or 根据... before continuing |
| third-tone sandhi in 根据 | 根据 begins on a neutral first-tone syllable followed by a falling tone; keep the two syllables distinct and even |
| 连读 rhythm in 虽然...但是 | treat each half of the pair as its own breath group; do not rush 虽然 into the clause that follows it |
No new tone or sound system is introduced in this chapter. This is a rhythm and phrasing focus building on the tone control already consolidated in Chapters 1 through 5.
Grammar and Sentence Patterns: Framing Information by Source
1. 据...报道 and 根据 — Naming a Source
| Pattern | Use | Example |
|---|---|---|
| 据 + source + 报道,+ information | attribute a news item to a source | 据当地新闻报道,市中心明年会有一个新的公园。 |
| 根据 + source,+ information | base a statement on a notice, document, or report | 根据这份公告,图书馆下周三不开门。 |
2. 通过 — Introducing a Means (Coverb, Introduced This Chapter)
| Pattern | Use | Example |
|---|---|---|
| 通过 + means + subject + verb phrase | describe how information was obtained or an action accomplished | 我们通过一个朋友知道了这个消息。 |
通过 joins the coverb system already active for 从, 到, 给, 跟, 用, 在, 往, and 向. Like those coverbs, 通过 and its phrase come before the main verb.
3. 虽然...但是... — Introducing a Contrast (Introduced This Chapter)
| Pattern | Use | Example |
|---|---|---|
| 虽然 + situation A,但是 + situation B | present a contrast or limitation within a report or statement | 虽然这个计划还没有最后确定,但是很多市民已经开始讨论了。 |
虽然 and 但是 each open their own clause. 虽然 does not need 可是 or 不过 to complete the contrast; 但是 alone is sufficient and is the default pairing for this chapter.
This chapter introduces no other new grammar system. Word order, negation, aspect, measure words, and the modal and complement systems from earlier chapters remain unchanged and continue to recycle throughout the reading, listening, speaking, and writing tasks below.
Model Exchange: 共享单车的消息
Context: two neighbors discuss a public notice about a new bike-share program; neutral, informative register.
王阿姨:你看到公告栏上的通知了吗?

王阿姨:是吗?这是怎么开始的?
小刘:据当地新闻报道,是几个市民先提出的想法,后来市政府决定支持。
王阿姨:听起来不错。不过,自行车放在哪儿呢?
小刘:虽然公告上没有说得很清楚,但是我通过朋友知道,车站附近会有专门的停车点。
王阿姨:那目前计划是什么时候开始?
小刘:公告说目前还没有最后的日期,专家还在讨论细节。
Auntie Wang: Did you see the notice on the bulletin board? Xiao Liu: I did. According to this notice, there will be a bike-share program downtown starting next month. Auntie Wang: Really? How did this get started? Xiao Liu: According to local news reports, a few residents first raised the idea, and later the city government decided to support it. Auntie Wang: Sounds good. But where will the bikes be kept? Xiao Liu: Although the notice doesn't say very clearly, I found out through a friend that there will be dedicated parking spots near the stations. Auntie Wang: So when is the plan currently set to start? Xiao Liu: The notice says there isn't a final date yet — experts are still discussing the details.

Writing Workshop: A Short News-Style Paragraph
Write a short news-style paragraph (six to eight sentences) about a real or invented piece of local public information, following the model of the Reading Practice passage above.
写作任务 — Writing task: Type your paragraph using Pinyin input. Your writing must include:
- A clear source-framing opening, using 据...报道 or 根据.
- At least one use of 通过 to describe how information was obtained or how something was accomplished.
- At least one contrast using 虽然...但是.
- At least two public-information vocabulary items from this chapter's core vocabulary list, used naturally.
- No direct quotation — report and paraphrase the information rather than copying exact wording.
修改清单 — Editing checklist:
- The paragraph opens by clearly naming its source.
- 通过 is used correctly to introduce a means, before the main verb.
- 虽然 and 但是 each open a complete clause and are not mixed with 可是 or 不过.
- Chinese punctuation (,。?!) is used correctly throughout, with no unnecessary quotation marks.
- No grammar or vocabulary beyond what has been consolidated through Chapter 6 is required to complete the task.
Culture and Communication
Public notices in Mandarin-speaking contexts commonly name their issuing body or source directly, whether that is a government office, a school, a workplace, or a news outlet, and they often state clearly what is confirmed versus what is still being decided. This pattern — naming a source, then distinguishing settled information from pending details — appears in many settings, from a printed community bulletin board to an online city-government announcement, though the exact format and level of formality vary by publication and region.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Dropping the source: a news-style report should name where the information comes from; do not state public information as if it were the writer's own unattributed claim.
- Confusing 根据 and 通过: 根据 introduces the basis for a statement (a document, notice, or report); 通过 introduces a means or channel by which something was learned or accomplished. They are not interchangeable.
- Splitting 虽然...但是 with the wrong pairing: keep 虽然 paired with 但是 in this chapter rather than substituting 可是 or 不过, which are not yet productive here.
- Overloading the paragraph with new vocabulary: this chapter's writing task should showcase the source-framing and coverb patterns clearly, not a long list of unfamiliar public-affairs terms.
- Treating 目前 as interchangeable with 现在: 目前 is a more formal, report-appropriate way of saying "at present," well suited to public-information writing.
