科技和网络生活
Chapter Overview and Learning Objectives
This chapter continues Unit II by moving your Mandarin into everyday digital life: apps, messaging, social media, and online reading. Rather than introducing a new grammar system, this chapter focuses on vocabulary and register — how the same idea can be expressed casually in a chat message and more formally in an online article or announcement. You will keep using the source-framing and coverb patterns from Chapter 6 (根据, 通过, 虽然...但是) inside new digital contexts, and you will build a working vocabulary of loanwords and internet-native terms, clearly labeled by register.
By the end of this chapter, you will be able to:
- Use core vocabulary for apps, devices, accounts, and everyday online activities.
- Recognize common Mandarin loanwords connected to technology and identify their labeled register.
- Distinguish informal chat-message language from more formal online-article language.
- Read a short informal chat exchange and a short online article on the same topic.
- Listen to a short description of someone's online habits and identify key details.
- Write a short informal message and a short formal online post about the same everyday topic, adjusting register appropriately.
Communication Scenario
A friend tells you about a new app for finding study groups near campus. You first hear about it through a casual chat message, then you read a short, more formal post about the same app on a student-life website. You will practice moving between these two registers yourself.
- You will listen to a short description of someone's daily online habits and take notes.
- You will read an informal chat exchange and a short formal online post about the same app.
- You will orally describe your own online habits to a partner, using at least one loanword.
- You will write both an informal message and a short formal post recommending something online, adjusting your register between the two.
Core Vocabulary: Technology and Online Life
| 汉字 | Pinyin | Part/Function | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|---|---|
These words are productive for this chapter and its recycling in Chapters 8 through 10. 博客/部落格 is labeled as a regional pair: 博客 is the common Mainland form and 部落格 is common in Taiwan; both are receptive comparison items, and 博客 is the productive default for this chapter. Additional platform names appearing in the reading or listening passages are glossed and remain receptive only.
Pronunciation Focus: Neutral Tone in Everyday Digital Words
Several common technology words carry a neutral tone on their final syllable, which learners sometimes over-articulate by mistake. This chapter formally introduces the neutral-tone pattern in everyday compound words, building on the neutral-tone awareness already active since Volume I.
| Feature | Practice Note |
|---|---|
| neutral tone on 们-type and word-final light syllables | keep the final syllable of 朋友-type words short and light; the same pattern applies to some casual digital vocabulary |
| neutral tone in 聊天 vs. stressed compounds | 聊天 keeps both syllables full; contrast this with words that do reduce, so learners do not over-generalize the neutral-tone pattern |
| connected phrasing in chat-style speech (receptive) | listen for how casual spoken Mandarin online video and voice messages run words together faster than the model dialogue; this is for recognition only at this stage, not production |
This chapter introduces neutral-tone word patterns as a controlled productive system for the first time (previously receptive). Connected phrasing in fast, casual speech remains receptive only and is not assessed productively in this volume.
Grammar and Sentence Patterns: Register, Not New Structure
This chapter introduces no new core grammar system. Instead, it develops your control of register — choosing different vocabulary and phrasing for the same idea depending on whether you are writing an informal chat message or a more formal online post. The coverb and source-framing patterns from Chapter 6 continue to develop here in a digital context.
1. Informal vs. Formal Framing of the Same Idea
| Informal (chat message) | Formal (online post/article) | English |
|---|---|---|
| 这个软件挺好用的! | 这个软件受到不少用户的好评。 | This app is quite good. / This app has received considerable positive feedback from users. |
| 我在网上看到的。 | 根据网上的消息。 | I saw it online. / According to information online. |
| 你试试看吧。 | 建议大家可以尝试一下。 | Give it a try. / It is suggested that readers may wish to try it. |
Notice that 根据 (Chapter 6) reappears here as the more formal way to introduce a source, replacing the casual 我在网上看到的. The underlying coverb and source-framing grammar is unchanged; only the vocabulary and tone shift.
2. 通过 in a Digital Context (Recycled, Chapter 6)
| Pattern | Use | Example |
|---|---|---|
| 通过 + app/platform + subject + verb phrase | describe how something was found, learned, or accomplished online | 我通过这个软件找到了一个学习群。 |
This chapter introduces no new complement, aspect, comparison, or modification system. Word order, negation, aspect, measure words, modals, complements, and 的/地/得 remain at their Chapter 6 status and continue to recycle in the tasks below.
Model Exchange: 找学习小组的软件
Context: two classmates chat informally, then one of them reads a more formal post about the same app aloud; informal register shifting briefly into formal quotation.
Xiao Chen: Hey, are you there? Xiao Lin: Yeah! What's up? Xiao Chen: I downloaded an app today that helps you find nearby study groups — it's really useful! Xiao Lin: Really? How do you register an account? Xiao Chen: It's simple — after you download it, you just register an account with your phone number. Xiao Lin: OK, I'll download it and try it too. How did you find out about this app? Xiao Chen: An online friend shared it in a group chat. He said the app is quite popular among students. Xiao Lin: So can we use this app to chat and study together? Xiao Chen: Sure! I also saw an article online introducing it — let me read it more formally: (Xiao Chen reads from the article on his phone) "According to information online, this app has received considerable positive feedback from many university students and is mainly used to find nearby study partners." Xiao Lin: Ha, you read that just like the news. Xiao Chen: That's exactly the difference! The way we talk casually isn't the same as the way things get written.
Guided Practice
A. Match each informal sentence with its more formal equivalent.
- 这个软件挺好用的!
- 你试试看吧。
- 我在网上看到的。
Formal options (in scrambled order): 建议大家可以尝试一下 / 根据网上的消息 / 这个软件受到不少用户的好评。
B. Complete each sentence with 通过, 根据, or 分享.
- 我______这个软件找到了一个学习小组。
- ______这篇文章,这个软件很受欢迎。
- 她把这个消息______给了她的网友。
C. Rewrite the informal chat sentence below as a short, formal sentence suitable for an online post, using 根据 or a formal verb from this chapter's vocabulary.
- 我朋友说这个群里的人都很好,大家常常互相帮忙。
Listening Practice
Listening script for independent use. Read aloud slowly, then at a natural pace, or have a fluent speaker record it.
一段自我介绍 — A short self-description of online habits:
我每天都会用手机上网。早上起床以后,我先看看有没有新消息,然后在几个群里跟朋友聊天。我平常喜欢在网上看新闻,也喜欢看别人写的博客。上个星期,我通过一个网友知道了一个新软件,可以用来分享学习笔记,我已经下载了,也上传了几份笔记。虽然这个软件目前用的人还不多,但是我觉得它以后会越来越受欢迎。
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| 她每天早上起床以后先做什么? | ______ |
| 她是怎么知道那个新软件的?(用通过回答) | ______ |
| 她用那个软件做了什么? | ______ |

Speaking Practice
交际任务 — Communicative task: 介绍你的网络生活
With a partner, describe your everyday online habits: which apps you use, how you found them, and what you use them for. Use at least one loanword from this chapter's vocabulary and at least one sentence with 通过. Your partner should ask at least one follow-up question.
独立练习 — Solo alternative
Record a one-minute description of your own online habits, then record a second, more formal thirty-second version of the same information, as though writing an online profile bio.
Reading Practice
Read the informal chat exchange and the short formal post below, both about the same app, then answer the questions. Pinyin support remains reduced in this reading, continuing the phase-out from earlier chapters.
小王:你用过"学伴"这个软件吗?
小张:用过!挺不错的,我是通过我表姐知道的。
小王:好用吗?
小张:好用,我已经加了两个学习群,大家常常分享笔记。
正式网上介绍:

- 目前这个软件有什么情况?(用虽然...但是回答)
Writing Workshop: Same Idea, Two Registers
Write two short pieces about the same real or invented app, website, or online tool: an informal chat message and a short formal online post.
写作任务 — Writing task: Type both pieces using Pinyin input. Your writing must include:
- An informal chat message (three to four sentences) to a friend, recommending the app or tool casually, including how you found out about it.
- A short formal post (five to six sentences) on the same topic, using 根据 or a formal verb to frame your information, at least one sentence with 通过, and at least one contrast with 虽然...但是.
- At least two vocabulary items from this chapter's core vocabulary list in each piece, used naturally.
- A visible shift in register between the two pieces — the same idea should sound noticeably more casual in the chat message and more formal in the post.
修改清单 — Editing checklist:
- The informal message sounds like something a friend would actually type.
- The formal post sounds more measured and does not use casual chat expressions.
- 通过 and 根据 are each used correctly and are not confused with one another.
- Chinese punctuation (,。?!) is used correctly throughout, with no unnecessary quotation marks.
- No grammar or vocabulary beyond what has been consolidated through Chapter 7 is required to complete the task.
Culture and Communication
Online Mandarin communication commonly shifts noticeably between casual chat register and the more measured register used in articles, official app descriptions, or public posts, much as in English. The specific platforms, apps, and even some vocabulary in wide use can vary considerably by region and by generation, and popular platforms in one Mandarin-speaking context are not necessarily the same as those in another. Loanwords connected to technology also vary: some are borrowed sounds, some are translated by meaning, and some differ between Mainland, Taiwan, and other script communities, so it is worth treating any single platform name or piece of internet vocabulary as representative of common practice rather than as universal.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Using chat-style language in a formal post: expressions like 挺...的 or 吧 at the end of a suggestion are natural in a chat message but sound out of place in a formal online post.
- Using overly formal language in a casual chat: a message to a friend that reads like a news article can sound stiff or unnatural; save 根据 and similarly formal framing for more formal writing.
- Confusing 根据 and 通过 in a digital context: 根据 introduces the basis for a claim (an article, official information); 通过 introduces the means by which you found out about or accomplished something. This distinction from Chapter 6 still applies.
- Treating all Mandarin-speaking online communities as identical: platform names, some vocabulary, and even script conventions can differ by region; label regional or platform-specific items rather than presenting them as universal.
- Over-flattening neutral tone: not every word-final light syllable behaves the same way; check new vocabulary rather than assuming every compound reduces its final syllable.
Chapter Summary
This chapter built a working vocabulary for apps, accounts, and everyday online activity, and developed your control of register by contrasting informal chat language with more formal online writing. You practiced recycling the source-framing and coverb patterns from Chapter 6 (根据, 通过, 虽然...但是) inside digital contexts, and you formally introduced neutral-tone word patterns as a productive pronunciation system. These systems continue to develop through Chapters 8 through 10 as Unit II moves into institutions, formal correspondence, and the Unit II assessment.
