综合任务二:使用公共信息
Chapter Overview and Learning Objectives
This chapter closes Unit II. It introduces no new grammar, no new high-burden character set, and no new pronunciation system. Instead, it asks you to bring together everything from Chapters 6 through 9 — reading and discussing news and public information, talking about technology and online life, handling institutional procedures and formal requests at a service counter, and writing a complete formal email — into one connected task. Xiao Chen and Xiao Lin's study group has now sent their formal email from Chapter 9 and must follow the process through to its resolution: reading a public notice, listening to an announcement, discussing the outcome, and writing a final message.
By the end of this chapter, you will be able to:
- Recognize and use vocabulary from news and public information, technology and online life, institutional procedures, and formal email in one connected task.
- Listen to a public announcement and extract the specific information it contains.
- Read a public notice and a follow-up email exchange and answer questions that require connecting information across both texts.
- Orally explain a public process from start to finish, using 根据, 通过, and 虽然...但是.
- Ask and answer confirmation questions and make polite requests in both spoken and written form.
- Write a complete, correctly formatted follow-up email that responds to new information.
- Continue recognizing 被, 把, 未, and 无 in public and institutional texts without being required to produce them.
Communication Scenario
It is now the Friday deadline mentioned in Chapter 9's posted notice. The student services office has posted an update about fixed study-room time applications, and has also sent a reply email to Xiao Chen and Xiao Lin. You will follow the whole process: an announcement about the update, the posted notice, the office's reply email, and a final message the study group must write in response.
- You will listen to a short public announcement about the fixed study-room time results.
- You will read an updated posted notice and the office's reply email to Xiao Chen and Xiao Lin.
- You will orally explain, from start to finish, what happened with the application and what should happen next.
- You will write a short follow-up email responding to the office's reply.

Pronunciation Check: -n/-ng and Formal Reading Aloud
This chapter does not introduce new pronunciation content. It checks your control of the -n/-ng contrast recycled across Chapters 8 and 9, and asks you to read a short formal passage aloud at an even pace, applying the formal reading-aloud awareness introduced receptively in Chapter 9.
| Feature | Check Task |
|---|---|
| -n vs. -ng contrast | read aloud 通知 (tōngzhī), 申请 (shēnqǐng), 尊敬 (zūnjìng), and 邮件 (yóujiàn) clearly distinguishing each final |
| even-paced formal reading aloud | read the posted notice in the Reading Assessment section aloud slowly, pausing at punctuation |
Grammar and Pattern Review
No new grammar is introduced in this chapter. The systems below, all consolidated by the end of Chapter 9, are what this chapter's tasks require you to use.
| Pattern | Function | Source |
|---|---|---|
| 根据… | explains what something is based on | Ch. 6–9 |
| 通过… | explains how something was done or communicated | Ch. 6–9 |
| 虽然…但是… | contrasts a rule with a special circumstance | Ch. 7–9 |
| 麻烦您 / 请 + verb phrase | polite spoken or written request | Ch. 8–9 |
| statement + 是不是?/ 对不对? | confirmation question, spoken or written | Ch. 8–9 |
| 尊敬的…: / 此致 敬礼 | formal email opening and closing | Ch. 9 |
被 and 把 (recognition-only since Chapter 8) and 未 and 无 (recognition-only since Chapter 9) continue to appear in this chapter's reading material for recognition only. You are not required to produce sentences using any of these four items.
Listening Assessment
Listening script for independent use. Read aloud slowly, then at a natural pace, or have a fluent speaker record it.
学生服务办公室的通知 — Announcement from the student services office:

Reading Assessment
Read the updated posted notice and the office's reply email below, then answer the questions. The sentences using 未 and 无 are glossed for recognition only, as in Chapter 9.

Speaking Assessment
交际任务 — Communicative task: 从申请到结果
With a partner, take turns explaining the whole process from Chapter 8 through this chapter: how the study group first asked about the room at the counter, how they wrote a formal email to apply for a fixed time, and what the office's reply said. Use 根据 and 通过 at least once each, and 虽然...但是 at least once. Ask each other at least one confirmation question about a detail in the story.
独立练习 — Solo alternative
Record yourself narrating the whole process in your own words, from the first visit to the study room to the final approval email, as if explaining it to a friend who missed the whole story.
Writing Assessment: A Follow-Up Email
Write a short, correctly formatted follow-up email from Xiao Chen and Xiao Lin, thanking the office for the approval and asking one confirmation question about the process for changing the time in the future.
写作任务 — Writing task: Type your email using Pinyin input. Your writing must include:
- A subject line that clearly reflects a thank-you and follow-up email.
- A formal opening address using 尊敬的 plus a title or name, followed by a colon.
- A body paragraph that thanks the office and briefly restates the approved time, using 根据 or 通过 at least once.
- At least one confirmation question, using 是不是 or ,对不对?, about the process for changing the time later.
- A formal closing, using 此致 and 敬礼 on separate lines, followed by your name.
修改清单 — Editing checklist:
- The subject line clearly reflects the purpose of the email.
- 尊敬的 + title/name + colon opens the email correctly.
- The body clearly connects to the approval described in the reading passage.
- The confirmation question is grammatically correct and genuinely checks a detail.
- 此致 and 敬礼 appear on separate lines before the sender's name.
- Chinese punctuation (,。?!:) is used correctly throughout.
- No grammar or vocabulary beyond what has been consolidated through Chapter 9 is required; 被, 把, 未, and 无 are not required in your own writing.
Culture and Communication Check
A follow-up or thank-you email after a request has been granted is common institutional practice in many settings, but it does not need to abandon the structure of the original formal email. Keeping the same opening and closing formulas across an exchange — even a short thank-you — signals consistency and respect for the relationship, much as replying "Dear [Name]... Sincerely" in English correspondence maintains the same register as the original message. As in Chapter 9, exact expectations for how much to say in a follow-up message vary by school, workplace, and region.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Dropping the formal structure in a short follow-up email: even a brief thank-you email should keep 尊敬的 and 此致/敬礼; shortness does not mean informality.
- Losing track of which information came from which source: this chapter connects a listening passage, a notice, and an email; check that your answers and your own writing use the correct detail from the correct source.
- Trying to produce your own 未, 无, 被, or 把 sentences: all four remain recognition-only through this chapter; productive control is scheduled for later study.
- Treating 根据 and 通过 as interchangeable: 根据 introduces what something is based on; 通过 introduces how something was done or communicated. Review Chapters 6–9 if the distinction feels unclear.
Chapter Summary
This chapter introduced no new grammar, vocabulary, or pronunciation systems. Instead, it brought together the news and public-information reading skills from Chapter 6, the technology and online-life vocabulary from Chapter 7, the institutional procedures and formal requests from Chapter 8, and the formal email structure from Chapter 9 into one connected story: a study group's request for a fixed study-room time, from first inquiry to final approval. You practiced listening to an announcement, reading a notice and a reply email together, narrating the whole process aloud, and writing a short, correctly formatted follow-up email. This closes Unit II — Media and Public Life.
