观点、证据和反驳
Chapter Overview and Learning Objectives
This chapter opens Unit III. Having followed a public process to its resolution in Chapter 10, Xiao Chen and Xiao Lin's study group must now decide something as a group: whether to invite a new member. The chapter introduces the language of stance, evidence, concession, and qualified disagreement — how to state an opinion clearly, support it, acknowledge a different view, and push back on a point without being impolite. It also introduces the potential complement, a new grammar system for describing whether an action is possible to complete.
By the end of this chapter, you will be able to:
- State a personal opinion clearly using 我觉得 and 我认为.
- Support an opinion with evidence using 根据 and specific reasons.
- Acknowledge an opposing point before disagreeing, using 虽然...但是 and 不过/可是.
- Qualify a strong statement so it does not sound absolute, using 一般来说 and 不一定.
- Form and use potential complements such as 听得懂/听不懂 and 看得出来/看不出来.
- Follow a short discussion or lecture-style excerpt and identify the speaker's main stance.
- Continue recognizing 被, 把, 未, and 无 in reading material without being required to produce them.
Communication Scenario
With their fixed study-room time confirmed, Xiao Chen, Xiao Lin, and their study-group members are discussing whether to invite a new classmate, Xiao Wang, to join. Not everyone agrees. You will follow their discussion, listen to a short recorded opinion from a group member who could not attend, and form and support your own opinion on the question.
- You will read a short group chat exchange in which members state and support opposing opinions.
- You will listen to a short voice message in which a group member gives a qualified opinion.
- You will discuss the question with a partner, stating your own opinion and responding to a different view.
- You will write a short paragraph giving your opinion, with evidence and one acknowledged counterpoint.

Pronunciation Focus: Connected Phrasing in Opinion Speech
This chapter introduces connected phrasing: grouping an opinion, its softener, and its reason into one smooth breath group rather than pausing after every word. Practice keeping 我觉得, 不过, and 一般来说 attached to the clause that follows them, the way a fluent speaker would say them as a single unit rather than as an isolated tag.
| Phrase | Practice Focus |
|---|---|
| 我觉得这个主意不错。 | say 我觉得 and 这个主意不错 as one connected phrase, no pause after 觉得 |
| 她很聪明,不过有点儿害羞。 | keep 不过 attached forward to 有点儿害羞, not isolated |
| 一般来说,新组员需要一点儿时间适应。 | light pause after the comma, then one connected phrase to the end |
Grammar and Sentence Patterns
1. Stating an Opinion: 我觉得 and 我认为
Both introduce a personal opinion. 我觉得 is more conversational; 我认为 is somewhat more formal and often used when the opinion is supported by reasoning.
我觉得我们应该请小王加入我们的小组。
我认为多一个人不一定会影响效率。
2. Softened Counterargument: 不过 and 可是
不过 and 可是 both mean "but," but they are softer in tone than 但是 in casual disagreement. Use them to introduce a gentle counterpoint after acknowledging the other person's point.
你说的有道理,不过我还是有点儿担心时间问题。
我明白你的理由,可是证据好像还不够。
3. Qualification: 一般来说 and 不一定
Qualification softens an absolute claim so it does not overstate the case. 一般来说 frames a statement as a general tendency rather than a rule; 不一定 directly denies necessity.
一般来说,小组人越多,安排时间越难。
人多不一定学习效果不好,这得看小组怎么合作。
4. The Potential Complement (新): V + 得/不 + Complement
The potential complement states whether an action's result is possible to achieve. It is formed by inserting 得 (possible) or 不 (not possible) between a verb and its result or directional complement.
听得懂 (can understand by listening) / 听不懂 (cannot understand by listening)
看得出来 (can tell by looking) / 看不出来 (cannot tell by looking)
At this stage, control is limited to the two verb-complement pairs above. Broader potential-complement patterns are developed in later chapters of this unit.
Putting It Together
我觉得我们应该请小王加入。她很努力,我看得出来。不过,人多了以后,时间可能更难安排,这是我们得考虑的问题。一般来说,小组人数不宜太多,但这不一定是绝对的规则。
Model Dialogue:
Guided Practice
- Complete each sentence with 我觉得 or 我认为, choosing the more natural option for the context: ______我们应该早点儿决定。
- Rewrite as a softened counterargument using 不过: 你的理由很好。但是证据不够。 → ______
- Add a qualifier using 不一定 to soften this absolute claim: 小组人多,效率就低。
- Form the correct potential complement: 她说得很快,我 (听/懂) ______。
- Form the negative potential complement: 这张照片太模糊了,我 (看/出来) ______这是谁。
Listening Practice
Listening script for independent use. Read aloud slowly, then at a natural pace, or have a fluent speaker record it.
小组成员的语音留言 — Voice message from a group member:
大家好,我是小周。我没办法参加今天的讨论,但是我想说说我的看法。我觉得请小王加入是个好主意,她很认真,这个我看得出来。不过,我也同意小林的担心:人多了,安排时间确实不容易。一般来说,我支持小组扩大,可是我认为我们应该先商量好新的时间安排,再正式邀请她。
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| 小周对请小王加入这件事的看法是什么? | ______ |
| 小周同意小林的什么担心? | ______ |
| 小周认为应该先做什么,再邀请小王? | ______ |
Reading Practice: A Group Chat Exchange
Read the group chat messages below, then answer the questions. 被 is glossed for recognition only, as in earlier chapters.
小周:我认为这个担心是有道理的,不过证据不多——我们还没试过,怎么知道效率一定会受影响?
小陈:对,我看得出来大家其实都不反对,只是想法不完全一样。要不我们先试一个月,看看效果?
小林:这个主意不错,如果被大家接受,我也同意。
- 小林最开始的担心是什么?
- 小周怎么回应小林的担心?
- 小陈提出了什么解决办法?
- 小林最后同意了吗?条件是什么?
Speaking Practice
交际任务 — Communicative task: 你的看法
With a partner, discuss whether your own study group (real or imagined) should add a new member. State your opinion using 我觉得 or 我认为, support it with a reason, acknowledge your partner's point using 不过 or 可是, and qualify at least one claim using 一般来说 or 不一定.
独立练习 — Solo alternative
Record yourself giving a one-minute opinion on the question, including a supported opinion, one acknowledged counterpoint, and one qualified statement.
Writing Workshop: An Opinion Paragraph
Write a short paragraph giving your opinion on whether the study group should invite a new member. Your writing must include:
- A clear opening opinion statement using 我觉得 or 我认为.
- At least one supporting reason, introduced with 因为 or 根据.
- One acknowledged counterpoint, introduced with 不过 or 可是.
- One qualified statement, using 一般来说 or 不一定.
- At least one potential complement from this chapter's vocabulary, used naturally.
修改清单 — Editing checklist:
- The opinion is stated clearly in the first sentence.
- The supporting reason is relevant and specific.
- The counterpoint is acknowledged respectfully, not dismissed.
- The qualifier avoids stating the claim as an absolute rule.
- The potential complement is formed correctly.
- Chinese punctuation (,。?!) is used correctly throughout.
Culture and Communication Check
In many Mandarin-speaking contexts, disagreement in a group setting is often introduced gently — acknowledging the other person's point before raising a concern — rather than stated as a flat contradiction. Words like 不过 and 可是 tend to soften a counterpoint more than 但是 does in casual conversation, though all three are grammatically similar. This is a tendency in many settings rather than a fixed rule, and directness varies by relationship, workplace, region, and individual style.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Using 我认为 in every casual context: 我认为 can sound overly formal in a relaxed conversation; 我觉得 is usually more natural among friends.
- Skipping the acknowledgment before disagreeing: jumping straight to 不过/可是 without recognizing the other person's point first can sound abrupt.
- Confusing 得 and 不 placement in potential complements: remember the pattern is verb + 得/不 + complement, not verb + complement + 得/不.
- Trying to produce your own 被 sentences: 被 remains recognition-only at this stage; productive control comes later.
Chapter Summary
This chapter opened Unit III by introducing the language of stance, evidence, concession, and qualified disagreement: 我觉得 and 我认为 for stating opinions, 不过 and 可是 for softened counterarguments, 一般来说 and 不一定 for qualification, and the potential complement for describing whether an action's result is achievable. You practiced these systems through a group discussion about adding a new member to the study group, including a voice message, a group chat, a spoken discussion, and a written opinion paragraph.
