Volume III, Chapter 12: Comparison, Classification, and Evaluation · Speak and Write Mandarin Chinese: Independent Communication and Advanced Expression

Chapter Overview and Learning Objectives

Chapter 11 gave Xiao Chen and Xiao Lin's study group a decision framework — state an opinion, support it, acknowledge a counterpoint, and qualify a claim. In this chapter, the group has to apply that framework to something more concrete: choosing which of two possible study locations to use for the trial month with Xiao Wang. Doing that well means comparing options directly, sorting them into categories, and evaluating them with more precise language than 好 or 不好. This chapter expands your comparison system into more complex and classificatory uses, introduces 对于 and 关于 for marking a topic under discussion, adds the modal 可能 for probability, and extends the potential complement to two new verb-complement pairs.

By the end of this chapter, you will be able to:

  1. Compare two or more options directly using 比, 没有, 更, and 最 in extended, multi-point comparisons.
  2. Sort options into categories using 种类, 类, and 分类 vocabulary.
  3. Evaluate an option using precise evaluative language rather than only 好/不好.
  4. Mark a topic under discussion using 对于 and 关于.
  5. Express probability using 可能.
  6. Form and use two additional potential complements: 找得到/找不到 and 坐得下/坐不下.
  7. Read and respond to a short comparison-and-evaluation passage about two locations.
  8. Continue recognizing 被, 把, 未, and 无 in reading material without being required to produce them.

Communication Scenario

The study group has agreed to try a one-month trial with Xiao Wang, but first they need to choose where to meet: the library study room they have used before, or a nearby café with more space. You will follow their comparison of the two options, read a short passage evaluating each one, and then compare and evaluate two options of your own.

  1. You will read a short comparison passage about the library study room and the café.
  2. You will listen to a short recommendation in which a group member evaluates both options and gives a probability judgment.
  3. You will discuss the two options with a partner, comparing them point by point and giving your evaluation.
  4. You will write a short paragraph comparing and evaluating two real or imagined options and recommending one.

发音 — Pronunciation Focus

Pronunciation Focus: Rhythm in Multi-Point Comparison

Comparative sentences with 比 often stack several points in sequence — location, quiet, price, space. Practice giving each compared item its own light stress and a small pause before 比, so the comparison stays clear rather than running together into one long unbroken phrase.

PhrasePractice Focus
图书馆比咖啡馆安静。light stress on 图书馆 and 咖啡馆, brief pause before 比
咖啡馆的空间比较大,但是价格也比较高。connect 空间比较大 as one phrase, then a light pause before 但是
整体来说,我觉得咖啡馆更合适。light pause after the comma, then one connected phrase to the end
语法 — Grammar and Sentence Patterns

Grammar and Sentence Patterns

1. Extended Comparison: 比, 没有, 更, 最 in Multi-Point Comparisons

You have already used 比, 没有, 更, and 最 to compare single qualities. This chapter extends that system to comparisons across several points in the same discussion — location, noise level, space, and price — so that a comparison becomes a small structured argument rather than a single sentence.

图书馆比咖啡馆安静,但是咖啡馆的空间比图书馆大。
价格方面,图书馆没有咖啡馆贵,这也是一个优点。

2. Classification: 种类, 分类, 条件

种类 and 分类 introduce the idea of sorting options into categories, and 条件 names the criteria used to judge them. Together they let you organize a comparison before evaluating it.

我们可以先把地方分类:安静的和热闹的。
我们的条件是:安静、方便、价格合理。

3. Marking a Topic: 对于 and 关于

对于 and 关于 both introduce the topic being discussed, usually at the beginning of a sentence. 关于 is slightly broader and often introduces a general subject; 对于 more often introduces a specific issue or question on which people have a stance.

关于地点问题,我们还没有决定。
对于这两个选择,我的看法是咖啡馆更合适。

4. Probability with 可能

可能 expresses that something is probable or possible, usually placed before the verb phrase it modifies. It is weaker than a definite claim and pairs naturally with qualifying language from Chapter 11 such as 不一定.

周末咖啡馆可能人比较多。
这个条件可能不太容易满足,但不一定不可能。

5. The Potential Complement (续): 找得到/找不到 and 坐得下/坐不下

This chapter adds two more potential-complement pairs to the system introduced in Chapter 11: 找得到/找不到 (whether something can successfully be found) and 坐得下/坐不下 (whether a space can fit a certain number of seated people).

这个时间去图书馆,应该找得到位子。
咖啡馆的这张桌子坐得下我们五个人。

Putting It Together

关于地点问题,我觉得咖啡馆更合适。图书馆比咖啡馆安静,这是它的优点,但是咖啡馆的空间比较大,坐得下我们五个人。价格方面,图书馆没有咖啡馆贵。整体来说,两个地方各有优点和缺点,可能得看我们更看重哪个条件。

对话 — Model Dialogue

Model Dialogue:

Guided Practice

Guided Practice

  1. Complete the comparison: 图书馆______咖啡馆安静,但是咖啡馆的空间______图书馆大。
  2. Rewrite using 关于 to introduce the topic: 地点问题,我们还没决定。 → ______
  3. Add 可能 to soften this claim: 周末人比较多。
  4. Form the correct potential complement: 这个时间去,应该 (找/到) ______位子。
  5. Form the negative potential complement: 这张桌子太小了,(坐/下) ______我们五个人。
听力 — Listening Practice

Listening Practice

Listening script for independent use. Read aloud slowly, then at a natural pace, or have a fluent speaker record it.

小组成员的语音留言 — Voice message from a group member:
大家好,我是小周。关于地点问题,我也想说说我的看法。图书馆和咖啡馆各有优点:图书馆比较安静,价格也没有咖啡馆贵;咖啡馆的空间比较大,坐得下我们所有人。不过,我觉得周末咖啡馆可能人比较多,不一定找得到位子。整体来说,对于我们这个小组来说,我觉得安静更重要,所以我支持图书馆。

阅读 — Reading Practice

Reading Practice: A Comparison Notice

Read the short comparison passage below, then answer the questions. 被 is glossed for recognition only, as in earlier chapters.

我们把可能的地点分成两类:安静型和方便型。图书馆属于安静型,它的优点是安静、价格低;缺点是周末人多,位子不一定找得到。咖啡馆属于方便型,空间比较大,坐得下比较多的人;缺点是价格比较高,环境也可能比较吵。如果这个建议被大家接受,我们下周就可以先试一次咖啡馆。
Translation note: 被 in 如果这个建议被大家接受 marks a passive construction ("if this suggestion is accepted by everyone") and is glossed for recognition only.
  1. 这篇短文把地点分成了哪两类?
  2. 图书馆的优点和缺点分别是什么?
  3. 咖啡馆的优点和缺点分别是什么?
  4. 如果建议被接受,下周会发生什么?
口语 — Speaking Practice

Speaking Practice

交际任务 — Communicative task: 比较两个地方

With a partner, compare two real or imagined places to study, eat, or meet. Use 对于 or 关于 to introduce your topic, compare at least two points using 比/没有/更/最, sort the options using 种类 or 分类 language, and give an overall evaluation using 整体来说. Include 可能 at least once.

独立练习 — Solo alternative

Record yourself comparing and evaluating two options for one minute, including at least one potential complement from this chapter or Chapter 11.

写作 — Writing Workshop

Writing Workshop: A Comparison and Recommendation

Write a short paragraph comparing two options (real or imagined) and recommending one. Your writing must include:

  1. A topic-marking opening using 对于 or 关于.
  2. At least two comparison points, using 比, 没有, 更, or 最.
  3. One classification statement, using 种类 or 分类.
  4. One probability statement, using 可能.
  5. At least one potential complement from this chapter or Chapter 11, used naturally.
  6. An overall evaluation, using 整体来说.

修改清单 — Editing checklist:

  • The topic is clearly marked in the first sentence.
  • At least two points of comparison are stated clearly.
  • The classification statement is relevant to the comparison.
  • The probability statement is appropriately qualified, not stated as certain.
  • The potential complement is formed correctly.
  • Chinese punctuation (,。?!) is used correctly throughout.

Culture and Communication Check

Culture Note — Balanced evaluation before a recommendation

In many Mandarin-speaking academic and workplace settings, a recommendation is often introduced only after both options have been described fairly, naming an advantage and a drawback for each before stating a preference. This pattern is common in group decision-making and is not unique to any one region, though the degree of formality and directness in presenting a recommendation varies by relationship, setting, and individual style.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Overusing 更 and 最 without a clear comparison base: 更 and 最 need a stated or clearly implied set of options being compared, not a vague general statement.
  • Placing 可能 after the verb: 可能 normally comes before the verb phrase it modifies, not after.
  • Confusing 对于 and 关于: both introduce a topic, but 对于 more often introduces a stance-bearing issue, while 关于 more often introduces a general subject.
  • Trying to produce your own 被 sentences: 被 remains recognition-only at this stage; productive control comes later.

Chapter Summary

This chapter expanded your comparison system into multi-point comparisons using 比, 没有, 更, and 最; introduced classification language with 种类, 分类, and 条件; added 对于 and 关于 for marking a topic; introduced the modal 可能 for probability; and extended the potential complement with 找得到/找不到 and 坐得下/坐不下. You practiced these systems through the study group's comparison of two possible meeting locations, including a voice message, a written comparison notice, a spoken comparison task, and a written recommendation paragraph.
