Volume III, Chapter 14: Discussion, Negotiation, and Concession · Speak and Write Mandarin Chinese: Independent Communication and Advanced Expression

Chapter Overview and Learning Objectives

Chapter 13 gave the study group a clear, numbers-based picture of how the café trial has gone. Now the group has to decide what to do next, and not everyone agrees. In this chapter, they hold a real discussion: some members want to keep meeting at the café, one member has doubts about the noise, and the group has to talk through the disagreement and reach a decision together. This chapter introduces language for taking turns in a discussion, agreeing and disagreeing politely, making and responding to suggestions, and expressing concession with 虽然...但是..., while continuing to recognize 尽管 as a more formal way of expressing the same idea.

By the end of this chapter, you will be able to:

  1. Take a turn in a discussion politely, including asking to speak and adding a point.
  2. Agree and disagree with an opinion using appropriate softening language.
  3. Make a suggestion and respond to someone else's suggestion.
  4. Express concession using 虽然...但是..., connecting an acknowledged point to a main point.
  5. Recognize 尽管 as a more formal alternative to 虽然 without being required to produce it.
  6. Follow a multi-speaker discussion and identify each speaker's position.
  7. Continue recognizing 被, 把, 未, and 无 in reading material without being required to produce them.

Communication Scenario

The study group meets to decide, based on the data from Chapter 13, whether to keep using the café as their regular meeting place. Most of the data looks positive, but one member, 小马, has concerns about the noise level during busy hours. You will follow the group as they take turns sharing opinions, respond to 小马's concern, and negotiate a decision that everyone can accept. Then you will practice discussing and resolving a disagreement of your own.

  1. You will read a short written record of the group's discussion points before the meeting.
  2. You will listen to part of the group's discussion and identify who agrees, who disagrees, and why.
  3. You will discuss a disagreement with a partner, taking turns, making a suggestion, and using concession language.
  4. You will write a short summary of a discussion and its outcome, real or imagined.

发音 — Pronunciation Focus

Pronunciation Focus: Turn-Taking Intonation

Discussion language depends heavily on intonation to signal politeness and stance. A rising, slightly softened tone on phrases like 打断一下 and 你的意思是 signals a polite interruption or check, rather than a challenge. A falling, steady tone on 我同意 or 我不太同意 signals a clear but calm stance.

PhrasePractice Focus
打断一下,我想补充一点。soften 打断一下 with a slight rise, then speak 我想补充一点 at a steady, even pace
我不太同意,我觉得还有问题。keep 不太同意 calm and even, not sharp or abrupt
你的意思是,噪音的问题比较大,对吗?slight rise on 对吗 at the end to invite confirmation
语法 — Grammar and Sentence Patterns

Grammar and Sentence Patterns

1. Taking a Turn: Asking to Speak and Adding a Point

打断一下 politely signals that you are about to interrupt briefly, and is normally followed by the point you want to make. 我想补充一点 introduces an additional point without directly contradicting what was said before. Both expressions soften the act of speaking up in a group discussion.

打断一下,我想补充一点:出席率的数据其实很不错。
我可以说一句吗?我觉得噪音也是一个问题。

2. Agreeing and Disagreeing Politely

同意 and 不同意 state a position directly. 不太同意 is softer than a flat 不同意, and is common when disagreeing with someone in a group setting. 你说的也有道理 acknowledges a point without necessarily agreeing with the whole position, and is often used just before introducing a different view.

我同意继续用咖啡馆。
我不太同意,我觉得噪音的问题还没有解决。
你说的也有道理,不过我还是有点担心。

3. Making and Responding to Suggestions

建议 introduces a suggestion and is often followed by 我们 plus a verb phrase. A suggestion can be accepted with 这个建议不错 or similar, or met with a softened alternative suggestion using 也许可以...

我建议我们换一个安静一点的时间。
也许可以试试看下午比较早的时间。

4. Concession with 虽然...但是...

虽然...但是... links an acknowledged point to a main point that the speaker still wants to emphasize. 虽然 introduces the acknowledged point, and 但是 introduces the point that follows despite it. The two halves normally appear in the same sentence, with 虽然 first.

虽然高峰时间有点吵,但是大部分时间还是很安静的。
虽然小马有一点担心,但是他也同意再试一个月。

5. Recognizing 尽管 (Receptive)

尽管 functions like 虽然 but is more common in formal spoken and written contexts, such as presentations, reports, or news. It is glossed for recognition only in this chapter; you are not expected to produce it yet.

尽管数据显示大部分人满意,但是仍然有一个问题需要解决。

Keep concession sentences to one clear acknowledged point and one clear main point for now. Longer or stacked concession structures are developed in later chapters.

Putting It Together

我们讨论了一下下一步怎么办。大部分人同意继续用咖啡馆,因为出席率和满意度都上升了。不过,小马提出了一个问题:高峰时间比较吵。他建议我们换一个安静一点的时间,或者换一个安静一点的位置。虽然高峰时间确实有点吵,但是大部分时间还是很安静的,所以我们决定妥协一下:继续用咖啡馆,但是把开始时间往前调一个小时。最后,大家达成了一致。

对话 — Model Dialogue

Model Dialogue:

Reading Practice

Reading Practice: A Discussion Summary

Read the short discussion summary below, then answer the questions. 被 and 把 are glossed for recognition only, as in earlier chapters.

Translation note: 被 in 这个决定被大家认为是... marks a passive construction ("this decision is considered by everyone to be..."), and 把 in 把见面时间...改成... marks a disposal construction ("take the meeting time and change it to..."). Both are glossed for recognition only.

Speaking Practice

交际任务 — Communicative task: 讨论一个分歧

With a partner, role-play a discussion about a disagreement (for example, choosing a meeting time, a study method, or a group project topic). One partner should raise a concern and politely interrupt to add a point; the other should acknowledge the point using 你说的也有道理, then make a suggestion. Use at least one 虽然...但是... sentence, and end by stating whether you reached 一致 or a 妥协.

独立练习 — Solo alternative

Record yourself narrating a disagreement and how it was resolved, including at least one polite interruption phrase, one agree/disagree phrase, and one 虽然...但是... sentence.

写作 — Writing Workshop

Writing Workshop: Summarizing a Discussion

Write a short paragraph summarizing a discussion and its outcome, real or imagined. Your writing must include:

  1. An opening statement naming the topic of the discussion.
  2. At least one expression of agreement and one of disagreement, using vocabulary from this chapter.
  3. At least one suggestion, using 建议.
  4. One 虽然...但是... sentence connecting an acknowledged point to a main point.
  5. A closing statement using 达成一致 or 妥协 to describe the outcome.

修改清单 — Editing checklist:

  • The topic of the discussion is clearly named in the first sentence.
  • At least one agreement and one disagreement are expressed clearly.
  • 建议 is used correctly to introduce a suggestion.
  • The 虽然...但是... sentence has both halves in the correct order.
  • The outcome is clearly described using 达成一致 or 妥协.
  • Chinese punctuation (,。?!) is used correctly throughout.

Culture and Communication Check

Culture Note — Disagreeing without confrontation

In many Mandarin-speaking group settings, direct disagreement is often softened with acknowledgment phrases such as 你说的也有道理 before a different view is introduced, and outright confrontation is generally avoided in favor of finding a workable compromise. How much softening is expected still varies by setting, relationship, and individual style, and some professional or academic contexts call for more direct disagreement than casual group settings.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Reversing 虽然 and 但是: 虽然 must introduce the acknowledged point first; 但是 introduces the main point that follows, not the other way around.
  • Dropping 但是 entirely: in this chapter's pattern, 虽然 is normally paired with 但是 in the same sentence; using 虽然 alone can sound incomplete.
  • Using 不同意 too bluntly in a group setting: 不太同意 or 你说的也有道理,不过... is usually softer and more natural than a flat 不同意.
  • Producing 尽管 instead of recognizing it: at this stage, 尽管 is for reading and listening recognition only; continue using 虽然 in your own speaking and writing.
