Unit II Integrated Assessment · Speak and Write Portuguese: Foundations of Practical Communication

Chapter Overview

This chapter is the Unit II integrated assessment. It does not introduce new grammar, vocabulary domains, pronunciation systems, or orthographic burdens. Instead, it asks you to combine everything activated in Chapters 6–9 — talking about food and preferences, describing your daily routine, locating places and moving through a neighborhood, and shopping for everyday items — into one connected day. You will follow a single narrator, Camila, through a Saturday in the city, and then use the same systems to plan and describe your own day.

Chapter Objectives

By the end of this chapter, you will be able to:

  1. Narrate a connected sequence of daily-life actions using regular -ar, -er, and -ir present-tense verbs, fazer, and ir.
  2. State food and drink preferences and order simply using gostar de and querer.
  3. Locate places and describe movement through a neighborhood using estar, ficar, ir a/para, and the contractions no/na/do/da.
  4. Ask prices, describe items, and complete a simple purchase using demonstratives, adjective agreement, precisar de, and poder.
  5. Combine these systems into one organized spoken and written account of a day in the city.

Communication Scenario

A conversation-group member is telling a friend about a Saturday spent running errands, eating, and shopping around the city — and then describing their own typical Saturday the same way.

  1. This chapter assesses only material activated in Chapters 6–9. No new productive grammar is introduced.
  2. You may invent your own city, places, foods, and purchases if you prefer not to describe a real day.
  3. Chapters 1–5 systems (greetings, ser, estar, ter, identity, family, days, dates, and times) continue to recycle throughout this chapter.

Unit II Systems Map

These four chapters work together to build one connected day. Review the map below before continuing.

Cap. 6 — O que você come?

Regular -ar present, gostar de, articles, querer, ordering with por favor.

Cap. 7 — Minha rotina

Regular -er/-ir, formulaic reflexive routines, a gente, frequency words, fazer, ir.

Cap. 8 — Onde fica?

Model Passage: Um dia na cidade

O sábado de Camila

No sábado, Camila acorda cedo e toma café da manhã em casa. Ela gosta de comer pão com queijo e tomar um suco de laranja. Às nove horas, ela sai de casa e vai ao mercado, que fica perto da praça. No mercado, ela compra frutas e legumes. Depois, ela vai a uma loja de roupas no centro. Ela precisa de uma camisa nova para o trabalho. Ela vê esta camisa branca e essa camisa azul; a azul custa setenta reais. Camila pergunta: "Posso pagar com cartão?" A vendedora responde: "Pode sim!" À tarde, Camila volta para casa, almoça com a família e descansa um pouco. À noite, ela sai com amigos para jantar em um restaurante perto do banco. Foi um bom sábado!

This passage combines routine verbs (Cap. 7), location and movement (Cap. 8), and shopping language (Cap. 9) into one connected narration. Notice that it stays in the present tense; narrating this same day in the past is developed beginning in Chapter 16.

Guided Practice

  1. Reread the model passage and underline every verb form. Identify which chapter (6, 7, 8, or 9) first activated each one.
  2. Complete each sentence with fica, vai, or gosta de: O mercado ______ perto da praça. / Camila ______ à loja de roupas. / Ela ______ pão com queijo.
  3. Rewrite each phrase with the correct contraction: em + a loja. de + o banco. em + o mercado.
  4. Complete each sentence with precisar de or poder: Camila ______ uma camisa nova. / Ela ______ pagar com cartão?

Listening Task

If no audio recording is available, ask a partner, instructor, or text-to-speech tool to read the script below aloud, or read it aloud to yourself slowly.

Listening script
Oi! Hoje é sábado e eu estou muito ocupado. De manhã, eu acordo cedo e tomo café da manhã. Depois, eu vou ao mercado, que fica perto da minha casa. Eu compro frutas e pão. À tarde, eu vou a uma loja perto do centro, porque eu preciso de sapatos novos. Os sapatos pretos custam cem reais, mas eu prefiro os sapatos marrons, que custam oitenta reais. Eu pergunto: "Posso pagar com cartão?" O vendedor diz: "Pode sim!" À noite, eu janto com a minha família.
Hi! Today is Saturday and I'm very busy. In the morning, I wake up early and have breakfast. Then, I go to the market, which is near my house. I buy fruit and bread. In the afternoon, I go to a store near downtown, because I need new shoes. The black shoes cost one hundred reais, but I prefer the brown shoes, which cost eighty reais. I ask: "Can I pay with a card?" The salesperson says: "Yes, you can!" At night, I have dinner with my family.
  1. What two things does the speaker buy at the market?
  2. Why does the speaker go to a store in the afternoon?
  3. Which shoes does the speaker prefer, and how much do they cost?

Speaking Task

Prática controlada — Controlled practice: four sentences

Say each sentence aloud about your own typical Saturday: Eu acordo ______. (a time); Eu gosto de ______. (a food); Eu vou a/ao/à ______. (a place); Eu preciso de ______. (an item)

Tarefa comunicativa — Communicative task: describe your day

With a partner, take turns describing a typical Saturday from morning to night. Include at least one food preference, one place with its location, and one shopping moment with a price. Your partner should ask at least one follow-up question using onde, quanto, or o que.

Prática individual — Solo alternative

Record yourself narrating your own version of Camila's Saturday, using the model passage as a structure but changing the places, foods, and items to match your own city or an invented one.

Reading Task

Uma mensagem de Camila

Oi, Rafael! Como você está? Hoje eu fui muito ocupada. De manhã, eu fui ao mercado perto da praça e comprei frutas. Depois, eu fui a uma loja no centro porque eu precisava de uma camisa nova. Eu vi uma camisa branca e uma camisa azul; a azul custava setenta reais. Eu comprei a azul e paguei com cartão. À noite, eu vou jantar com amigos perto do banco. E você, o que você fez hoje?

This message uses simple past forms (fui, comprei, vi, custava, paguei) for recognition only. Past-tense narration becomes an active productive system beginning in Chapter 16; here you only need to understand the message, not produce these forms yourself.

Tarefa de leitura — Reading task:

  1. Where did Camila go in the morning, and what did she buy?
  2. Which shirt did Camila buy, and how much did it cost?
  3. What does Camila plan to do tonight, and where?

Writing Task

Complete the following linked writing tasks in order to build a short message describing your own day in the city.

Tarefa 1 — Routine: Write two sentences describing your morning routine, using at least one regular -ar, -er, or -ir verb and one frequency word.

Tarefa 2 — Food: Write one sentence with gostar de or querer about something you eat or drink.

Fill in the blank
Oi! Hoje eu estou na cidade. De manhã, eu vou ______, que fica perto ______. Eu preciso de ______. Esta ______ custa ______ reais. Eu posso ______? À noite, eu vou ______.
Hi! Today I'm in the city. In the morning, I go to ______, which is near ______. I need ______. This ______ costs ______ reais. Can I ______? At night, I'm going to ______.

Tarefa 3 — Location and shopping: Write one sentence locating a place with ficar or a contraction, and one sentence about a purchase using a demonstrative and an adjective in correct agreement.

Tarefa 4 — Full message: Combine Tarefas 1–3 into one short message of five to six sentences for a friend describing your day in the city, following the model of Camila's message in the Reading Task.

  1. Draft each section separately. Write the routine, food, location, and shopping sentences one at a time before combining them.
  2. Combine the sections into one message. Add a greeting at the start, recycled from Chapter 1.
  3. Check verb agreement. Confirm that regular -ar/-er/-ir endings match the subject.
  4. Check contractions and demonstratives. Confirm that no/na/do/da and este/esse/aquele forms are correct and agree with their nouns.
  5. Check numbers and diacritics. Confirm that prices are written correctly and that accented forms such as é, está, and à are preserved.

Lista de revisão — Editing checklist:

  • The message includes a greeting, a routine detail, a food preference, a located place, and a shopping moment with a price.
  • Regular present-tense verbs agree with their subjects.
  • Contractions and demonstratives are used correctly and agree with their nouns.
  • precisar de and poder are used correctly for their functions.
  • All diacritics and number spellings are preserved.

Culture and Communication

Culture in Context — A Saturday out

In many Brazilian cities, Saturdays commonly combine errands, open-air or neighborhood markets, and unhurried meals with family or friends, though the exact rhythm of the day varies widely by city, household, and personal schedule. Weekend mealtimes often stretch longer than weekday meals, and evening plans with friends are common but not universal.

Regional Variation — Markets and neighborhood shops

Terms and habits around neighborhood markets, corner shops, and shopping districts vary across Brazil and across other Lusophone countries. This chapter continues to use the Brazilian production model established in Chapters 6–9; other regional patterns remain recognition only unless a later chapter labels and activates them.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Common Mistake — Confusing estar and ficar for location

Error: Saying O mercado está perto da praça when describing a place's fixed, permanent location.

Correction: Use ficar for a place's fixed location: O mercado fica perto da praça. Estar remains appropriate for people, movable objects, and temporary situations.

Common Mistake — Skipping the contraction

Error: Saying Eu vou a o mercado, leaving a and o uncontracted.

Correction: Contract the preposition and article: Eu vou ao mercado.

Common Mistake — Dropping adjective agreement in a longer sentence

Error: Saying Eu comprei uma camisa azul e um sapato marrom bonito without checking each adjective separately when a sentence names several items.

Correction: Check each noun-adjective pair on its own: uma camisa azul (feminine singular) and um sapato marrom bonito (masculine singular) are each correctly agreed, even within the same sentence.

Chapter Summary

O que você praticou — What you practiced

This chapter did not activate new grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, or orthography. It consolidated Chapters 6–9 by combining routine, food preferences, location and movement, and shopping into one connected narration and one connected message, and by requiring you to move between all four systems in listening, speaking, reading, and writing tasks.
