Eu já viajei para o Brasil

Travel and Experience · Speak and Write Portuguese: Foundations of Practical Communication

Chapter Overview

In Chapter 16, you learned to narrate a single completed day using the preterite. This chapter widens that lens from a single day to an entire lifetime. You will use the preterite you already control to talk about travel, biography, and past experiences, and you will expand your control of já to mean "ever" as well as "already," paired with its counterpart nunca, "never." You will also meet a small set of new high-frequency preterites tied to travel — viajar, conhecer, chegar, voltar, and ficar — and you will practice describing a trip you took, a place you visited, or a country you have never been to. By the end of the chapter, you will be able to ask and answer Você já foi ao Brasil? and tell a short, connected story about your own travel experience.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this chapter, you will be able to:

  1. Use the preterite of high-frequency travel verbs, including viajar, conhecer, chegar, voltar, and ficar.
  2. Use já to ask and answer whether you have ever done something.
  3. Use nunca to say you have never done something.
  4. Describe a past trip: where you went, when, with whom, and for how long.
  5. Ask a partner about their travel experiences and report what you learned.
  6. Read and write a short biographical account of past experiences, preserving all diacritics.

Communication Scenario

You are getting to know a new acquaintance, and the conversation turns to travel. You want to ask whether they have ever visited certain places, tell them about a trip you took, and say whether you have or have not done certain things in your life. By the end of the chapter, you will be able to hold this kind of conversation and write a short paragraph about a memorable trip.

  1. This chapter activates an expanded set of preterite verbs tied to travel and experience.
  2. The chapter's productive target is já and nunca used with the preterite to talk about lifetime experience, building on the completion meaning of já from Chapter 16.
  3. The English present perfect ("I have traveled," "I have never been") is recognized here only as a translation aid; Portuguese expresses this meaning with the preterite.
  4. You may describe a real trip or invent one.

Core Vocabulary

This chapter's vocabulary supports talking about travel, lodging, and biography: verbs for taking a trip, words for accommodations and documents, and expressions for talking about lifetime experience.

All entries preserve required diacritics, including á and ê in conjugated forms introduced below.

Language Note — conhecer in the preterite

In the present tense, conhecer means "to know" or "to be familiar with" a person or place. In the preterite, it often shifts meaning to "met" or "visited for the first time": Eu conheci o Rio de Janeiro em 2019 means "I visited (got to know) Rio de Janeiro for the first time in 2019," not simply "I knew Rio de Janeiro."

Pronunciation Focus

Pronunciation Note — Stress recycling in new preterite verbs

The same stress pattern from Chapter 16 applies to every new regular verb in this chapter: the stress falls on the ending, not the stem. Practice the contrast between present eu viajo (stress on the first syllable) and preterite eu viajei (stress on the final syllable, spelled with ei).

Chegar keeps the spelling change you saw in Chapter 16: the eu form is cheguei, with a u inserted to preserve the hard g sound before e. Listen for this same pattern in fiquei (from ficar).

Grammar and Sentence Patterns

You already know how to form the preterite. This section extends that system to new travel verbs and teaches já and nunca as markers of lifetime experience.

New Regular Preterites: Travel Verbs

Preterite of viajar, conhecer, and voltar
Subjectviajarconhecervoltar
euviajeiconhecivoltei
você / ele / elaviajouconheceuvoltou
nósviajamosconhecemosvoltamos
vocês / eles / elasviajaramconheceramvoltaram

Chegar and ficar follow the same -car/-gar spelling-change pattern taught in Chapter 16: cheguei, fiquei in the eu form only; all other forms are fully regular.

Building Block — Travel narration
subject + preterite verb + destination/time expression
the same preterite system from Chapter 16, applied to a new vocabulary domain
Eu viajei para o Brasil em julho. Nós conhecemos a cidade em dois dias.
I traveled to Brazil in July. We got to know the city in two days.

Já and nunca for Lifetime Experience

In Chapter 16, you used já to mark whether something had already happened on a specific day. In this chapter, já expands to ask and answer whether something has ever happened at any point in your life, and nunca answers that a thing has never happened.

  • Você já foi ao Brasil? Have you ever been to Brazil? já + preterite question = "ever" asking about lifetime experience
  • Sim, eu já fui ao Brasil duas vezes. Yes, I have been to Brazil twice. já + preterite + count expression
  • Não, eu nunca fui ao Brasil. No, I have never been to Brazil. nunca + preterite = negative lifetime experience
  • Eu nunca viajei para a Europa, mas já conheci vários países da América do Sul. I have never traveled to Europe, but I have already visited several South American countries. nunca and já contrasted in one sentence
Language Note — English "have done" versus Portuguese preterite

English speakers often want to translate "I have traveled to Brazil" with a compound form. In Brazilian Portuguese, this meaning is normally expressed with the simple preterite plus já or nunca: Eu já viajei para o Brasil. A separate present-perfect-like construction exists in Portuguese, but it describes a different meaning — a repeated or ongoing action continuing into the present, such as Eu tenho viajado muito ultimamente ("I've been traveling a lot lately"). That construction is receptive only at this level and is not required for production in this chapter.

Prática guiada — Guided practice: Answer each question using já or nunca and the preterite.

  1. Você já viajou para outro país? (sim)
  2. Você já comeu feijoada? (não)
  3. Vocês já foram a uma praia brasileira? (sim, uma vez)
  4. Ela já conheceu Portugal? (não, nunca)
  5. Eles já voltaram de viagem? (sim, ontem)

Model Dialogue

Context: Two new acquaintances at a party, informal register, getting to know each other.
Beatriz Você viaja bastante? Do you travel a lot?
Thiago Mais ou menos. Eu já viajei para alguns países da América do Sul, mas nunca fui para a Europa. E você, você já foi ao Brasil? More or less. I've traveled to a few South American countries, but I've never been to Europe. And you, have you ever been to Brazil?
Beatriz Já, sim! Eu fui ao Rio de Janeiro no ano passado. Cheguei numa sexta-feira e fiquei uma semana. Yes, I have! I went to Rio de Janeiro last year. I arrived on a Friday and stayed a week.
Thiago Que legal! O que você fez lá? How cool! What did you do there?
Beatriz Eu conheci o Cristo Redentor, visitei duas praias e comi muita comida brasileira. Também fiz um passeio de barco. Foi uma viagem incrível. I visited Christ the Redeemer, went to two beaches, and ate a lot of Brazilian food. I also took a boat tour. It was an incredible trip.
Thiago Eu preciso conhecer o Rio um dia! Quando você voltou? I need to visit Rio someday! When did you get back?
Beatriz Eu voltei em setembro. Já quero viajar para lá de novo! I got back in September. I already want to travel there again!
  1. List everything Beatriz did during her trip to Rio de Janeiro.
  2. Has Thiago ever been to Europe? How do you know?
  3. Find one example of nunca in the dialogue and explain what it signals.

Guided Practice

Exercício A — Complete with the correct preterite form.

  1. Eu já ______ (viajar) para o Canadá duas vezes.
  2. Ela ______ (conhecer) Portugal no verão passado.
  3. Nós ______ (chegar) ao hotel muito tarde.
  4. Eles nunca ______ (ir) a um país estrangeiro.
  5. Vocês ______ (ficar) quanto tempo em São Paulo?

Exercício B — Answer in complete sentences using já or nunca.

  1. Você já viajou de avião?
  2. Você já comeu comida de outro país?
  3. Você já morou em outra cidade?

Exercício C — Build a short trip narration. Combine the elements into full preterite sentences, then put them in a logical order using primeiro, depois, and então.

  1. eu / chegar / ao aeroporto / cedo
  2. eu / conhecer / a cidade / a pé
  3. eu / voltar / para casa / cansado

Listening Practice

If no audio recording is available, ask a partner, instructor, or text-to-speech tool to read the script below aloud, or read it aloud to yourself slowly.

Listening script
No ano passado, eu viajei para Portugal com dois amigos. Nós chegamos a Lisboa numa quarta-feira e ficamos numa pousada perto do centro. Nos primeiros dias, nós conhecemos o centro histórico e visitamos vários museus. Eu nunca tinha comido tantos pastéis de nata na vida! Depois, nós viajamos de trem para o Porto e ficamos mais três dias lá. Voltamos para casa depois de uma semana, cansados mas felizes. Foi minha primeira viagem para a Europa.
Last year, I traveled to Portugal with two friends. We arrived in Lisbon on a Wednesday and stayed in a guesthouse near the center. In the first few days, we got to know the historic center and visited several museums. I had never eaten so many custard tarts in my life! Then, we traveled by train to Porto and stayed three more days there. We returned home after a week, tired but happy. It was my first trip to Europe.

Recognition note: eu nunca tinha comido is a past-perfect form. You are not expected to produce this form; understand it from context as "I had never eaten."

  1. List the speaker's activities in the order they happened.
  2. Where did the group stay in Lisbon, and for how long?
  3. Was this the speaker's first trip to Europe? How do you know?

Speaking Practice

Prática controlada — Controlled practice: three experience sentences

Say aloud three things you have already done and one thing you have never done, using já and nunca with a preterite verb each time.

Tarefa comunicativa — Communicative task: interview a partner about travel

With a partner, ask and answer Você já foi a...? for at least three different places, then ask two follow-up questions about a trip they took (Quando? Com quem? O que você fez lá?). Report one interesting detail about your partner's travel history back to the class or to yourself.

Prática individual — Solo alternative

Record yourself narrating a real or invented trip from arrival to departure, using at least five preterite verbs, one use of já, and one use of nunca.

Reading Practice

Notice viajou, chegaram, ficaram, conheceu, comeu, visitou, and voltou — the travel preterites from this chapter working together in one connected story.

Tarefa de leitura — Reading task:

  1. Where did Camila and her family go, and how did they get there?
  2. What did Camila do in Buenos Aires?
  3. Find three preterite forms in the passage and give their infinitives.

Writing Workshop

Write a short account of six to eight sentences describing a trip you took (real or invented), following the model of Camila's trip above.

  1. Choose your trip. Decide where you went, when, and with whom.
  2. Draft the arrival. Use at least one preterite verb from this chapter, such as chegar or ficar.
  3. Draft the activities. Use at least two more preterite verbs to describe what you did.
  4. Add a lifetime-experience sentence. Use já or nunca at least once.
  5. Draft the return. Use voltar and say how you felt.
  6. Connect the sections using primeiro, depois, and então.
  7. Check diacritics and spelling throughout, including forms such as já, até, and é.

Lista de revisão — Editing checklist:

  • The narrative uses at least three preterite verbs correctly conjugated.
  • já or nunca appears at least once with a clear meaning.
  • The trip includes an arrival, at least one activity, and a return.
  • The events are connected with sequence connectors.
  • All diacritics are preserved.
  • No unscheduled grammar, such as the imperfect or present perfect, appears productively.

Culture and Communication

Culture in Context — Talking about travel in Brazil

Asking Você já foi a...? about a well-known destination is a natural way to build conversation with someone new in many Brazilian social contexts. Brazil is a large country, and domestic travel between regions — the Northeast's beaches, the South's colder climate, the Amazon, and major cities like São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro — is just as common a conversation topic as international travel. Avoid assuming that every Brazilian has traveled internationally, or that travel experiences look the same across income levels and regions.

Regional Variation — o estrangeiro and o exterior

Both o estrangeiro and o exterior are commonly used in Brazilian Portuguese to mean "abroad," as in viajar para o exterior ("to travel abroad"). European Portuguese more often favors o estrangeiro in this sense. This is a recognition note only; the productive model for this course is Brazilian Portuguese, where either form is acceptable.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Common Mistake — Reaching for a compound tense

Error: Trying to build a form like eu tenho viajado ao Brasil to translate "I have traveled to Brazil."

Correction: Use the simple preterite with já: Eu já viajei para o Brasil. The compound form tenho viajado exists but expresses a different, ongoing meaning and is not the target structure of this chapter.

Common Mistake — Confusing conhecer and saber

Error: Saying Eu sei o Rio de Janeiro to mean "I know Rio de Janeiro."

Correction: Use conhecer for familiarity with places and people: Eu conheço o Rio de Janeiro. Reserve saber for facts and learned skills, as introduced in earlier chapters.

Common Mistake — Placing nunca incorrectly

Error: Saying Eu fui nunca ao Brasil.

Correction: Place nunca before the verb in everyday speech: Eu nunca fui ao Brasil. This mirrors the negative word order you practiced with não in earlier chapters.

Chapter Summary

O que você aprendeu — What you learned

This chapter expanded your preterite system into travel and biography, adding viajar, conhecer, chegar, voltar, and ficar to your active verbs. You learned to use já and nunca to talk about lifetime experience, and you practiced narrating a trip across listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
