Unit II integrated assessment · Speak and Write Russian: Foundations of Practical Communication

Chapter Objectives

This is a cumulative assessment chapter. By the end of this chapter, you will be able to:

  1. Describe a home and neighborhood, using prepositional location and existential statements with есть/нет.
  2. Narrate a daily routine using reflexive verbs, accusative objects, and time and frequency expressions.
  3. Order food and drink and request specific quantities using quantity genitive and numeral basics.
  4. Shop for clothing and goods, using accusative animacy, adjective agreement, demonstratives, and comparison.
  5. Combine home, routine, food, and shopping language into one connected practical day.
  6. Edit your own speaking and writing for the case, agreement, and vocabulary systems active in Chapters 1 through 9.

This chapter introduces no new productive grammar, case, aspect, motion, orthographic, or pronunciation system. Every task below draws on material already active from Chapters 1 through 9.

Communication Scenario

It is Anna's day off. She wakes up at home, tells a friend about her apartment and neighborhood, follows her usual morning routine, meets Nikolai for lunch, and then the two of them go shopping together, the same sequence of everyday situations built across Chapters 6 through 9. This chapter asks you to move through that whole day yourself, connecting home, routine, food, and shopping into one practical narrative.

  1. Every task below reuses a system already active from an earlier chapter, home and location from Chapter 6, routine and reflexive verbs from Chapter 7, food and quantity from Chapter 8, and shopping, animacy, and comparison from Chapter 9.
  2. No new case, aspect, or vocabulary domain appears in this chapter. The goal is to show that you can move between these systems smoothly within a single connected day.
  3. Treat the chapter as one integrated performance, not four separate quizzes, since a real day does not separate neatly into isolated topics.

Vocabulary Review

The words below are drawn from Chapters 6 through 9. All vocabulary from Chapters 1 through 9 remains fully productive in this chapter. No new vocabulary is introduced.

Pronunciation Review

Pronunciation Review — Stress, reduction, and adjective endings

No new pronunciation system is active in this chapter. Keep applying the stress and vowel reduction patterns from earlier chapters as you read the passages and dialogue below.

  • Continue reducing unstressed о and а, as in молоко́ and кварти́ра.
  • Continue distinguishing the reduced -ый ending of краси́вый from the fully stressed -о́й ending of дорого́й, as introduced in Chapter 9.
  • Continue devoicing a final -г, -б, or -д, as in друг.

Grammar Review

No new grammar system is introduced in this chapter. The four subsections below organize the systems from Chapters 6 through 9 for cumulative review and practice.

Home and Location Chapter 6

Use prepositional location and есть/нет to describe a home and neighborhood.

  • В кварти́ре есть ку́хня и две ко́мнаты.There is a kitchen and two rooms in the apartment.в + prepositional; есть + nominative
  • В на́шем райо́не нет па́рка.There is no park in our neighborhood.нет + genitive absence

Daily Routine Chapter 7

Use reflexive verbs, accusative objects, and frequency expressions to narrate a routine.

  • Ка́ждый день я встаю́ в семь часо́в и умыва́юсь.Every day I get up at seven o'clock and wash up.reflexive verbs, -ся; time expression
  • У́тром я не смотрю́ телеви́зор.In the morning I do not watch television.не + verb; accusative inanimate object

Food and Quantity Chapter 8

Use quantity genitive and polite request frames to order and shop for food.

  • Да́йте, пожа́луйста, кило́ сы́ра и литр молока́.Please give me a kilogram of cheese and a liter of milk.quantity genitive after кило́ and литр

Shopping Chapter 9

Use accusative animacy, adjective agreement, demonstratives, comparison, and object reference while shopping.

  • Я вижу дру́га и покупа́ю ему́ пода́рок.I see my friend and buy him a gift.друг → дру́га, animate accusative
  • Э́та ку́ртка деше́вле, чем та ку́ртка. Я хочу́ купи́ть её.This jacket is cheaper than that jacket. I want to buy it.demonstrative, comparison, object pronoun её
Language Focus — Moving between systems in one text

A single connected passage about a practical day will naturally move between prepositional location, reflexive verbs, quantity genitive, and accusative animacy within a few sentences. Watch for the shift from one system to the next as you read the Model Dialogue and the passages below, and practice making the same shifts yourself in the Writing Workshop.

Model Dialogue: Практи́ческий день

Context: Anna calls her friend Ле́на in the morning and tells her about her plans for the day.

Ле́на: Приве́т, А́нна! Что ты де́лаешь сего́дня? Hi, Anna! What are you doing today?
А́нна: Приве́т! У́тром я встаю́, умыва́юсь и убира́ю кварти́ру. В кварти́ре есть мно́го книг, и я их люблю́ чита́ть. Hi! In the morning I get up, wash up, and clean the apartment. There are a lot of books in the apartment, and I love reading them.
Ле́на: А днём? And in the afternoon?
А́нна: Днём я иду́ в магази́н. Мне нужны́ хлеб, сыр и молоко́. Я покупа́ю немно́го сы́ра и литр молока́. In the afternoon I go to the store. I need bread, cheese, and milk. I buy a little cheese and a liter of milk.
Ле́на: А ве́чером? And in the evening?
А́нна: Ве́чером я встреча́ю Никола́я. Мы идём в магази́н оде́жды. Он хо́чет купи́ть пода́рок для дру́га, а я хочу́ ку́пить но́вую ку́ртку. Мне нра́вится си́няя ку́ртка, она́ деше́вле, чем кра́сная. Я покупа́ю её. In the evening I am meeting Nikolai. We are going to a clothing store. He wants to buy a gift for a friend, and I want to buy a new jacket. I like the blue jacket, it is cheaper than the red one. I am buying it.
Ле́на: Хоро́ший план! Прия́тного дня. Good plan! Have a nice day.

Notice how the dialogue moves from home (Chapter 6) to routine (Chapter 7) to food and quantity (Chapter 8) to shopping (Chapter 9) within one short conversation.

Listening Practice

If no audio recording is available, ask a partner, instructor, or text to speech tool to read the passage below aloud, or read it aloud to yourself slowly.

Listening script
My name is Viktor. I live in a small apartment. There is a kitchen in the apartment, but there is no big room. Every day I get up early and go to the store. Today I am buying bread, cheese, and a little coffee. After the store I go to a clothing store, because I need a new suit for work. I see two suits. The black suit is better than the blue one, and I buy it.
  1. What does the apartment have, and what does it not have?
  2. What three items does Viktor buy at the food store?
  3. Which suit does Viktor buy, and why?

Speaking Practice

Управля́емая пра́ктика — Controlled practice: describe your day

With a partner, take turns describing one part of a typical day, home, routine, food, or shopping, using only vocabulary and grammar from Chapters 1 through 9.

Коммуникати́вное зада́ние — Communicative task: a full practical day

With a partner, narrate a complete day from morning to evening, moving through home, routine, a food purchase, and a shopping decision, as Anna does in the Model Dialogue.

Самостоя́тельная пра́ктика — Solo alternative

Record yourself narrating your own typical day, including at least one sentence about your home, your routine, a food item, and something you would like to buy. Listen back and check your case endings and adjective agreement.

Reading Practice

Оди́н день Мари́ны — One day in Marina's life

Reading task:

  1. What does Marina's apartment have, and what does it not have?
  2. What does Marina's friend buy, and for whom?
  3. Which jacket does Marina prefer, and why?

Writing Workshop

Complete the following linked writing tasks in order. This workshop reviews Chapters 6 through 9 and introduces no new writing system.

Зада́ние 1 — Complete the sentence: Choose the correct form to complete each sentence, drawing on the systems reviewed in this chapter.

Choose the correct form
1. В кварти́ре (есть/нет) ку́хня. 2. Ка́ждый день я (встаю́/встаёт) в семь часо́в. 3. Да́йте, пожа́луйста, кило́ (сыр/сы́ра). 4. Я ви́жу (друг/дру́га) в магази́не. 5. (Э́тот/Э́та) ку́ртка деше́вле, чем (тот/та) ку́ртка.
1. There is a kitchen in the apartment. 2. Every day I get up at seven o'clock. 3. Please give me a kilogram of cheese. 4. I see my friend in the store. 5. This jacket is cheaper than that jacket.

Зада́ние 2 — Practical day description: Write eight to ten sentences describing one connected practical day, moving through home, routine, food, and shopping, in that order.

  1. Review the Vocabulary Review tables above. Confirm the gender, case, and forms of any word you plan to use.
  2. Plan your four parts. Decide what you will say about your home, your routine, a food purchase, and a shopping decision.
  3. Draft your description. Include at least one prepositional location, one reflexive verb, one quantity genitive, one accusative animate noun, and one comparison.
  4. Read your description aloud once. Listen for correct stress and adjective agreement.
  5. Check each system against the Grammar Review section. Confirm every case ending and every agreement.

Спи́сок прове́рки — Editing checklist:

  • Prepositional location and есть/нет are used correctly for the home description.
  • Reflexive verbs and time expressions are used correctly for the routine description.
  • Quantity genitive is used correctly after a quantity word.
  • Accusative animacy is used correctly for any person mentioned as a direct object.
  • Adjective agreement, a demonstrative, and a comparison are used correctly in the shopping description.
  • No vocabulary or grammar from outside Chapters 1 through 9 has been used.

Culture and Communication

Culture in Context — A practical day is not the same for everyone

The daily sequence in this chapter, home, routine, a food purchase, and a shopping trip, reflects one common pattern, not a required schedule. Households, work patterns, and shopping habits differ widely among Russian-speaking communities, and a practical day for one person may look quite different from a practical day for another.

Regional Variation — Everyday services vary by place

The types of stores, markets, and shops used for food and clothing, and the way people typically combine errands in a single day, vary across regions and among Russian-speaking communities inside and outside the Russian Federation. Do not assume that the pattern in this chapter is universal.

Common Mistakes

Common Mistake — Confusing genitive absence with accusative direct objects

Error: Saying В кварти́ре нет ку́хню instead of В кварти́ре нет ку́хни.

Correction: After нет, use the genitive case, not the accusative case: нет ку́хни, not нет ку́хню.

Common Mistake — Forgetting the reflexive ending

Error: Saying Я умыва́ю у́тром instead of Я умыва́юсь у́тром.

Correction: Reflexive verbs like умыва́ться require the -ся ending in every conjugated form: я умыва́юсь, not я умыва́ю.

Common Mistake — Using the nominative form for an animate direct object

Error: Saying Я встреча́ю подру́га instead of Я встреча́ю подру́гу.

Correction: A feminine animate noun follows the same accusative pattern as a feminine inanimate noun: подру́га → подру́гу.
