Antes y ahora

El imperfecto para describir hábitos, trasfondo y comparaciones entre el pasado y el presente · Speak and Write Spanish: Everyday Independence and Connected Communication

Chapter Objectives

By the end of this chapter, you will be able to:

  1. Conjugate regular -ar, -er, and -ir verbs in the imperfect to describe habitual and background actions.
  2. Use the three irregular imperfect verbs — ser, ir, and ver — accurately.
  3. Describe what people, places, and routines used to be like using time expressions such as de niño/a, siempre, and todos los días.
  4. Compare how something was before with how it is now.
  5. Write a short comparison paragraph contrasting past habits with present ones.
  6. Talk about childhood routines and past circumstances aloud with reasonably accurate imperfect forms.

Communication Scenario

Diego and Marisol continue their conversation from last week, but today the topic shifts. Marisol mentions that her new office reminds her of her first job years ago, and Diego asks her what things were like back then. As she describes her old routine, she is no longer reporting single completed events — she is painting a picture of how things used to be, again and again, over time. That is exactly the kind of description you will practice in this chapter.

  1. In English, think of a routine or a place from your past — your childhood home, an old school, a first job.
  2. List two or three things that were normally true or that used to happen regularly, not one-time events.
Vocabulario nuevo — Capítulo 7

Core Vocabulary

This chapter's vocabulary supports describing habits, routines, and background circumstances from the past: time expressions for repeated or ongoing actions, and words for talking about how life used to be.

Pronunciation Focus

Pronunciation Note — The Steady Rhythm of the Imperfect

Regular -ar imperfect forms are built on -aba, and the stress always falls on that syllable: hablaba, hablabas, hablábamos. Notice that the nosotros form is the only one that needs a written accent, on the á of -ábamos: jugábamos, caminábamos. Practice saying the -aba pattern aloud with a steady, even rhythm — the imperfect describes something ongoing or repeated, and its smooth sound reflects that.

-er and -ir imperfect forms are built on -ía, and every form of these verbs carries a written accent on that í: comía, vivíamos, tenían. Say comía and comí aloud and notice how different the two sound — the imperfect stretches across three syllables with a clear accent on the í, while the preterite yo form is shorter.

Grammar: El imperfecto

Purpose: the imperfect describes what was habitually true, what was going on, or what things were like in the past — not a single completed event. Chapter 6 introduced the preterite for completed actions; this chapter introduces the imperfect for habits and background. Chapter 8 will bring the two together to tell fuller stories.

7.3 Imperfecto regular

Sujeto-ar (caminar)-er (comer)-ir (vivir)
yocaminabacomíavivía
túcaminabascomíasvivías
usted / él / ellacaminabacomíavivía
nosotros/ascaminábamoscomíamosvivíamos
ustedes / ellos / ellascaminabancomíanvivían

The yo and usted/él/ella forms are identical in the imperfect. Context — usually a subject pronoun or the surrounding sentence — makes the meaning clear.

Grammar Note — Only Three Irregular Verbs

The imperfect has only three irregular verbs: ser, ir, and ver.

Sujetoserirver
yoeraibaveía
túerasibasveías
usted / él / ellaeraibaveía
nosotros/aséramosíbamosveíamos
ustedes / ellos / ellaseranibanveían
Grammar Note — When to Use the Imperfect

Use the imperfect to describe:

  • habitual or repeated past actions: Todos los días caminaba a la escuela.
  • background circumstances: Era un día tranquilo y hacía sol.
  • ongoing situations without a clear end point: Vivíamos en una casa pequeña.
  • age, time, and physical or emotional states in the past: Tenía diez años. Eran las tres. Estaba muy contento.

The imperfect does not tell the listener that an action finished — it describes what was normal, ongoing, or true at the time. Chapter 8 will contrast this directly with the preterite.

  • De niña, Marisol vivía en un pueblo pequeño con su familia. As a child, Marisol lived in a small town with her family.
  • Ella solía caminar a la escuela con sus primos. She used to walk to school with her cousins.
  • Su primer trabajo era muy diferente del trabajo que tiene ahora. Her first job was very different from the job she has now.
  • Todos los días íbamos al mercado después de la escuela.Every day we used to go to the market after school.

Hey, is this new job similar to your first job?
MARISOLPara nada. Mi primer trabajo era muy diferente. Yo trabajaba en una tienda pequeña y siempre estaba muy ocupada. Not at all. My first job was very different. I worked in a small store and I was always very busy.
DIEGO¿Cómo era un día típico allí?What was a typical day like there?
MARISOLTodos los días abría la tienda a las ocho y atendía a los clientes sola casi todo el tiempo. No teníamos mucha tecnología; hacíamos todo a mano.Every day I opened the store at eight and helped customers alone almost the whole time. We didn't have much technology; we did everything by hand.
DIEGOQué diferente de ahora, ¿no?How different from now, right?
MARISOLTotalmente. Ahora tengo un equipo grande y usamos un sistema digital para todo. Mientras que antes trabajaba sola, ahora siempre trabajo con otras personas.Totally. Now I have a big team and we use a digital system for everything. Whereas before I worked alone, now I always work with other people.
DIEGO¿Extrañas algo de esa época?Do you miss anything from that time?
MARISOLSí, un poco. Conocía a todos mis clientes por nombre, y eso era muy bonito. Pero prefiero mi trabajo de ahora.Yes, a little. I knew all my customers by name, and that was very nice. But I prefer my job now.
DIEGOTiene sentido. Las dos cosas pueden ser ciertas al mismo tiempo. That makes sense. Both things can be true at the same time.

Preguntas de comprensión:

  1. ¿Dónde trabajaba Marisol antes?
  2. ¿Cómo era un día típico en su primer trabajo?
  3. ¿Qué extraña Marisol de esa época?
  4. ¿Qué prefiere Marisol, su trabajo de antes o su trabajo de ahora?

Listening

Ask your instructor, a partner, or a text-to-speech tool to read the following short description aloud, twice. As you listen, mark whether each sentence describes a habit/background (H) or a single completed event (E).

Reading

Read the following message that Marisol wrote to a friend, comparing her old neighborhood with the one where she lives now.

  4. ¿Qué extraña Marisol de su pueblo?

Writing Workshop: Antes y ahora

Your writing task for this chapter is a short comparison paragraph about a place, routine, or stage of life that has changed — your childhood home, an old school, a past job, or any similar topic — contrasting how things used to be with how they are now.

  1. Estudia el modelo. Reread "Mi barrio de antes y mi barrio de ahora" above. Underline every imperfect verb and every present-tense verb used for comparison.
  2. Planifica. List three or four things that were true before and how each one is different now.
  3. Escribe el primer borrador. Write at least eight sentences in Spanish using the imperfect for the past description and the present tense for the current situation. Use mientras que at least once to introduce a comparison.
  4. Revisa. Check your draft against the editing checklist below.
  5. Escribe la versión final. Produce a clean final version that reads as one connected comparison, not two disconnected lists.

Lista de revisión:

  • My regular imperfect verbs have the correct -aba or -ía endings.
  • My irregular imperfect verbs (ser, ir, ver) are correctly formed.
  • My nosotros forms carry the required written accent (-ábamos, -íamos).
  • My present-tense verbs describing the current situation are correctly conjugated.
  • I used mientras que or another comparison word at least once.
  • My articles, nouns, and adjectives agree in gender and number.
  • My paragraph reads as one connected comparison, not two disconnected lists.

Speaking Practice

Práctica controlada

With a partner, take turns asking and answering about childhood routines: ¿Qué hacías de niño/niña? / De niño/niña, yo... Use at least three different imperfect verbs each.

Tarea comunicativa: Antes y ahora

With a partner, role-play the scenario from the model dialogue: one person describes what a place, job, or routine used to be like, and the other asks follow-up questions and compares it to the present. Use tú throughout, since you are speaking with a friend.

Alternativa individual

If you are studying independently: record a two-minute description comparing something from your past with how it is now, using regular and irregular imperfect verbs and at least one comparison expression.

Culture and Communication

Culture in Context

Describing how a neighborhood, family routine, or workplace has changed over time is a common way to build closeness in conversation across many Spanish-speaking communities, but how much nostalgia or detail feels appropriate can vary by relationship, generation, and personal style. Some speakers share detailed memories readily, while others prefer to keep such comparisons brief. Pay attention to how the people around you approach these conversations rather than assuming one fixed pattern applies everywhere.

Common Mistakes

Common Mistake

Error: Using preterite endings for regular imperfect verbs — caminé instead of caminaba when describing a repeated childhood action.

Correction: Habitual or repeated past actions use the imperfect: De niño, caminaba a la escuela todos los días, not caminé.

Common Mistake

Error: Omitting the written accent on -er/-ir imperfect forms — writing comia or viviamos instead of comía, vivíamos.

Correction: Every form of a regular -er or -ir imperfect verb carries a written accent on the í: comía, comías, comía, comíamos, comían.

Common Mistake

Error: Treating ser, ir, and ver as regular in the imperfect — writing seía, iba correctly by chance but veia without the accent, or inventing forms like sera.

Correction: These three verbs are the only irregular verbs in the imperfect. Learn their five forms as a set: era/eras/era/éramos/eran; iba/ibas/iba/íbamos/iban; veía/veías/veía/veíamos/veían.

Chapter Review — Parte D, modelo

De niño, vivía en una casa pequeña con mis padres. Todos los días caminaba a la escuela con mi hermano. Los fines de semana jugábamos en el parque cerca de casa. Mi madre siempre preparaba el desayuno antes de que saliéramos. Ahora vivo solo en un apartamento en la ciudad. Ya no camino a todas partes; normalmente tomo el metro. Mientras que antes veía a mi familia todos los días, ahora los veo solo los fines de semana. Extraño esa rutina, pero también me gusta mi vida actual… Other accurate, well-organized answers combining the required systems are equally acceptable.

Chapter Review — Parte E, modelo

A: ¿Cómo era tu barrio de niño? B: Era muy tranquilo. Todos los días jugaba en la calle con mis primos. ¿Y el tuyo? A: El mío era diferente; vivíamos en un edificio grande y no conocía a todos mis vecinos... Use this as a model, not as the only acceptable wording.

Looking Ahead

Lo que ya sabes

You can now describe habits, routines, and background circumstances from the past using the imperfect, and you can compare how something used to be with how it is now. Combined with the preterite from Chapter 6, you now have both tools needed to tell a fuller story.

Próximo capítulo

Chapter 8, Algo salió mal, brings the preterite and imperfect together to describe problems and their background — what was going on when something went wrong, and what happened as a result. Keep both your preterite and imperfect forms active, since this contrast is central to natural Spanish narration.
