El pretérito y el imperfecto juntos: problemas, trasfondo y quejas de servicio · Speak and Write Spanish: Everyday Independence and Connected Communication

Chapter Objectives

By the end of this chapter, you will be able to:

  1. Combine the preterite and the imperfect in the same passage to describe a problem and the background against which it happened.
  2. Explain what was going on (imperfect) when something specific interrupted it (preterite).
  3. Describe common problems with products, services, appointments, and travel.
  4. Make a polite complaint and request a solution in a service setting.
  5. Narrate a short account of something that went wrong and how it was resolved.
  6. Recognize and self-correct the most common preterite/imperfect mixing errors.

Communication Scenario

Marisol's new washing machine stopped working two days after it was delivered. She calls the store where she bought it to explain what happened and to ask for a solution. To tell the story clearly, she needs two different past tenses at once: the imperfect to set the scene — what she was doing, what the machine was supposed to do — and the preterite to report the specific moment things went wrong. This is the skill at the center of this chapter.

  1. In English, think of a time something went wrong with a purchase, a reservation, or an appointment.
  2. Separate your memory into two parts: what was normally happening or supposed to happen, and the one specific thing that went wrong.
Vocabulario nuevo — Capítulo 8

Core Vocabulary

This chapter's vocabulary supports describing problems, explaining what went wrong, and requesting a solution in service situations such as stores, repair shops, and travel.

Pronunciation Focus

Pronunciation Note — Hearing the Preterite/Imperfect Contrast

Because the preterite and imperfect often appear in the same sentence in this chapter, listening practice depends on hearing the difference clearly. Compare miraba (imperfect, three syllables, stress on the second-to-last syllable, no accent needed) with miré (preterite, two syllables, written accent on the final é). The preterite yo form of -ar verbs always carries a written accent and a sharp final stress: hablé, miré, llamé. The imperfect never carries that final stressed accent.

Practice saying pairs aloud: trabajaba / trabajé, estaba / estuve, tenía / tuve. Notice that the imperfect member of each pair sounds longer and more level, while the preterite member is shorter and ends on a clear stressed syllable.

Grammar: Pretérito e imperfecto juntos

Purpose: most real stories about problems require both past tenses working together. The imperfect sets the scene — what was going on, what was normal, what something was supposed to be like. The preterite reports the specific event that interrupted that scene. This chapter does not introduce new verb forms; it teaches learners to use the preterite (Chapter 6) and the imperfect (Chapter 7) together with purpose.

Grammar Note — Background Versus Event

A common and reliable pattern:

  • Imperfecto — describes the background: what was happening, what something was like, or what was normally true.
  • Pretérito — reports the specific action that happened, often interrupting the background.

Compare: Mientras yo lavaba la ropa, la máquina dejó de funcionar. (While I was washing the clothes, the machine stopped working.) The imperfect lavaba paints the ongoing scene; the preterite dejó marks the one moment something changed.

Grammar Note — Common Sentence Patterns

Three patterns are especially useful for describing problems:

  • Background + interruption: Yo dormía cuando el teléfono sonó. (I was sleeping when the phone rang.)
  • Two background actions happening at once: Mientras yo esperaba, el técnico revisaba la máquina. (While I waited, the technician was checking the machine.)
  • A sequence of specific completed events: Llamé a la tienda, expliqué el problema y pedí un reembolso. (I called the store, explained the problem, and asked for a refund.)

Not every sentence needs both tenses. Use the imperfect for scene-setting and the preterite for the events that actually move the story forward.

  • La lavadora funcionaba bien hasta que, de repente, dejó de funcionar. The washing machine was working fine until, suddenly, it stopped working.
  • Yo tenía una reservación para las siete, pero el restaurante estaba cerrado cuando llegué.I had a reservation for seven, but the restaurant was closed when I arrived.
  • Mientras el técnico revisaba la máquina, encontró el problema. While the technician was checking the machine, he found the problem.
  • Yo pensaba que el paquete llegaba el lunes, pero nunca llegó.I thought the package was arriving on Monday, but it never arrived.

Good afternoon, thank you for calling. How can I help you?
MARISOLBuenas tardes. Compré una lavadora hace dos semanas y ya no funciona. Quiero hacer un reclamo.Good afternoon. I bought a washing machine two weeks ago and it no longer works. I'd like to make a complaint.
REP.Lo siento mucho. ¿Me podría explicar qué pasó?I'm very sorry. Could you explain to me what happened?
MARISOLSí. Yo lavaba la ropa como siempre, y de repente la máquina dejó de funcionar. Empezó a hacer un ruido extraño y luego se apagó completamente.Yes. I was washing clothes as usual, and suddenly the machine stopped working. It started making a strange noise and then it turned off completely.
REP.Entiendo su frustración. ¿Todavía tiene el recibo y la garantía?I understand your frustration. Do you still have the receipt and the warranty?
MARISOLSí, los tengo aquí. La garantía dice que la máquina debía durar al menos dos años.Yes, I have them here. The warranty says the machine was supposed to last at least two years.
REP.Perfecto. Podemos enviar a un técnico esta semana, o si prefiere, podemos ofrecerle un cambio o un reembolso.Perfect. We can send a technician this week, or if you prefer, we can offer you an exchange or a refund.
MARISOLPrefiero el cambio, si es posible. ¿Cuánto tiempo tarda?I prefer the exchange, if possible. How long does it take?
REP.Normalmente tres a cinco días. Le voy a enviar un correo con los detalles ahora mismo.Normally three to five days. I'm going to send you an email with the details right now.
MARISOLMuchas gracias por su ayuda.Thank you very much for your help.

Preguntas de comprensión:

  1. ¿Qué hacía Marisol cuando la lavadora dejó de funcionar?
  2. ¿Qué documentos le pide el representante a Marisol?
  3. ¿Qué tres soluciones ofrece la tienda?
  4. ¿Qué solución prefiere Marisol?

Listening

Ask your instructor, a partner, or a text-to-speech tool to read the following short account aloud, twice. As you listen, mark whether each sentence describes background (B) or a specific completed event (E).

Reading

Read the following message Diego wrote to a friend describing a problem with a flight reservation.

Un problema con mi vuelo

¡Qué semana! El lunes tenía un vuelo a las seis de la mañana para un viaje de trabajo. Todo parecía normal cuando llegué al aeropuerto: había poca gente y yo tenía tiempo de sobra. Pero cuando fui a la puerta de embarque, una empleada me dijo que el vuelo estaba cancelado por el mal tiempo.

No sabía qué hacer.

  4. ¿Cómo resolvió el agente el problema?

Writing Workshop: Algo salió mal

Your writing task for this chapter is a short narrative describing a time something went wrong — with a purchase, a service, a trip, or an appointment — and how it was resolved.

  1. Estudia el modelo. Reread "Un problema con mi vuelo" above. Underline every imperfect verb used for background and every preterite verb used for specific events.
  2. Planifica. Identify the background situation, the specific problem, and the resolution.
  3. Escribe el primer borrador. Write at least eight sentences in Spanish, using the imperfect for background and the preterite for the specific events. Use mientras or de repente at least once.
  4. Revisa. Check your draft against the editing checklist below.
  5. Escribe la versión final. Produce a clean final version that reads as one connected narrative with a clear background, problem, and resolution.

Lista de revisión:

  • I used the imperfect for background description and ongoing situations.
  • I used the preterite for the specific events that happened.
  • My preterite verbs carry the correct written accents where required (-é, -í endings).
  • My imperfect verbs carry the correct written accents where required (-ía forms, nosotros -ábamos).
  • I used mientras or de repente at least once.
  • My articles, nouns, and adjectives agree in gender and number.
  • My narrative includes a clear background, problem, and resolution.

Speaking Practice

Práctica controlada

With a partner, take turns completing sentences that combine background and event: Yo _____ (imperfecto) cuando de repente _____ (pretérito). Use at least three different verb pairs each.

Tarea comunicativa: Una queja de servicio

With a partner, role-play a customer service call like the model dialogue: one person describes a problem with a product or service, and the other responds professionally and offers a solution. Use usted throughout, since this is a formal service interaction.

Alternativa individual

If you are studying independently: record a two-minute account of a time something went wrong, using both the preterite and the imperfect and at least one solution or resolution.

Culture and Communication

Culture in Context

Making a complaint politely and clearly is valued in many Spanish-speaking service settings, but expectations around directness, documentation, and tone can vary by country, business, and context. In some settings, customers are expected to state the problem plainly and quickly; in others, a longer courteous exchange before getting to the issue is more common. Using usted and clear courtesy formulas, as in the model dialogue, is a safe and widely appropriate approach across many formal service interactions, though individual businesses and regions may differ.

Common Mistakes

Common Mistake

Error: Using the preterite for background description — Hizo buen tiempo cuando salimos, instead of Hacía buen tiempo cuando salimos.

Correction: Ongoing conditions and background situations use the imperfect: Hacía buen tiempo cuando salimos, not Hizo buen tiempo cuando salimos.

Common Mistake

Error: Using the imperfect for a single completed event — La máquina dejaba de funcionar ayer, instead of La máquina dejó de funcionar ayer.

Correction: A specific, one-time event that happened at a known moment uses the preterite: La máquina dejó de funcionar ayer, not dejaba.

Common Mistake

Error: Mixing tenses randomly within one sentence instead of using them purposefully — for example, switching to the preterite mid-description without a specific event to report.

Correction: Before writing a sentence, decide whether you are describing background (imperfect) or reporting a specific event (preterite). Ask: "Is this what was going on, or is this the thing that happened?"

Looking Ahead

Lo que ya sabes

You can now combine the preterite and the imperfect to tell a fuller story: setting the background, reporting the specific problem, and describing how it was resolved. You can also make a polite complaint and request a solution in a formal service interaction.

Próximo capítulo

Chapter 9, Experiencias y logros, introduces the present perfect for talking about experiences and achievements, along with expressions like ya and todavía no. Keep your preterite and imperfect forms active, since narration will continue to depend on both.
