Experiencias y logros

El presente perfecto, ya y todavía no: hablar de experiencias y logros · Speak and Write Spanish: Everyday Independence and Connected Communication

Chapter Objectives

By the end of this chapter, you will be able to:

  1. Form the present perfect using haber plus a past participle.
  2. Use the present perfect to talk about experiences and achievements connected to the present.
  3. Recognize the most common irregular past participles.
  4. Use ya and todavía no to talk about whether something has happened yet.
  5. Distinguish when the present perfect is the natural choice and when the preterite remains more natural, depending on the variety of Spanish.
  6. Talk about personal and professional accomplishments in a short spoken or written account.

Communication Scenario

Julián is preparing for a job interview. Before the interview, a friend asks him questions to help him practice: has he updated his résumé, has he researched the company, has he ever worked in a similar position before? To answer naturally, Julián needs a way to talk about actions that connect his past experience to his present situation — not simply "I did it," but "I have already done it" or "I haven't done it yet." This is the function of the present perfect, the focus of this chapter.

  1. In English, think of three things you have already done today and one thing you haven't done yet.
  2. Notice how English marks this idea with "have/has" plus a past participle: "I have finished," "I haven't started."
Vocabulario nuevo — Capítulo 9

Core Vocabulary

This chapter's vocabulary supports talking about life experiences, personal and professional achievements, and whether something has already happened.

Pronunciation Focus

Pronunciation Note — Linking Haber and the Participle

In natural speech, the conjugated form of haber and the past participle that follows it are pronounced as one connected unit, with no pause between them: he trabajado sounds close to [e‑tra‑ba‑ja‑do], not as two separately stressed words. The stress of the phrase falls on the participle, not on haber.

Practice saying these phrases as single connected units: he comido, has viajado, ha terminado, hemos conseguido, han vivido. Also notice that most past participles ending in -ado or -ido carry a written accent only on irregular forms such as leído and oído, where the vowel combination requires it.

Grammar: El presente perfecto

Purpose: the present perfect connects a past action to the present moment. It answers questions like "have you ever...?" and "have you already...?" rather than pinpointing exactly when something happened, which is the job of the preterite.

Grammar Note — Formation

The present perfect is formed with the present tense of haber plus a past participle. The participle does not change for gender or number in this construction.

Personahaber-ar → -ado-er / -ir → -ido
yohetrabajadocomido / vivido
túhastrabajadocomido / vivido
usted / él / ellahatrabajadocomido / vivido
nosotros/ashemostrabajadocomido / vivido
ustedes / ellos/ashantrabajadocomido / vivido

Common irregular past participles include: hecho (hacer), dicho (decir), escrito (escribir), visto (ver), puesto (poner), vuelto (volver), abierto (abrir), roto (romper), resuelto (resolver). These must be memorized individually rather than derived from a rule.

Grammar Note — Ya and Todavía No

Ya (already) confirms that something has happened. Todavía no (not yet) confirms that something has not happened but is still expected to.

  • Ya he terminado el currículum. (I have already finished the résumé.)
  • Todavía no he solicitado el trabajo. (I haven't applied for the job yet.)
  • ¿Has hablado con ella? — Sí, ya hablé con ella esta mañana. (Notice that once a specific moment is named — "this morning" — the preterite becomes just as natural as the present perfect in most everyday Latin American speech.)
Regional Note — Present Perfect Usage Varies by Region

The present perfect is not used with the same frequency everywhere. In Spain and in some Andean regions, the present perfect is very common for actions completed earlier the same day (Hoy he comido en casa). In much of Mexico, Central America, and other Latin American regions, the preterite is often preferred for that same idea (Hoy comí en casa), and the present perfect is reserved more narrowly for open, unfinished-time or experience-based statements (Nunca he comido allí).

This course activates the present perfect productively for experience and achievement language — alguna vez, nunca, ya, todavía no — since that use is broadly natural across the production baseline. Same-day past-tense usage with the present perfect is recognition only at this stage; the preterite remains the productive default for same-day narration unless a later regional pathway changes that frame.

  • ¿Has viajado alguna vez al extranjero?Have you ever traveled abroad?
  • Sí, he viajado a Colombia y a Costa Rica.Yes, I have traveled to Colombia and to Costa Rica.
  • Todavía no hemos terminado el proyecto. We haven't finished the project yet.
  • Mi hermana ya se ha graduado, pero yo todavía no.My sister has already graduated, but I haven't yet.

Práctica — Completa con el presente perfecto:

  1. Yo _____ (conseguir) una entrevista para el trabajo.
  2. ¿_____ (tú, hacer) tu currículum ya?
  3. Nosotros nunca _____ (vivir) en otro país.
  4. Mis padres _____ (ver) esa película tres veces.
  5. Ella todavía no _____ (escribir) la carta de presentación.

Model Dialogue

Contexto: Julián y su amiga Renata hablan por teléfono antes de la entrevista de trabajo de Julián. Se conocen bien y usan tú.

RENATA¿Cómo vas con los preparativos? ¿Ya has terminado el currículum? How are you doing with the preparations? Have you finished your résumé yet?
JULIÁNSí, ya lo he terminado y también he escrito la carta de presentación.Yes, I've already finished it and I've also written the cover letter.

RENATACon esa experiencia, creo que vas a estar muy bien preparado. ¿Has practicado las respuestas para la entrevista? With that experience, I think you're going to be very well prepared. Have you practiced your interview answers?
JULIÁNUn poco, pero todavía no he practicado suficiente. ¿Me ayudas ahora?A little, but I haven't practiced enough yet. Can you help me now?
RENATAClaro que sí. Empecemos con la primera pregunta: cuéntame de un logro profesional del que estás orgulloso.Of course. Let's start with the first question: tell me about a professional achievement you're proud of.

Preguntas de comprensión:

  1. ¿Qué ha terminado Julián ya?
  2. ¿Qué todavía no ha hecho completamente?
  3. ¿Qué experiencia profesional tiene Julián?
  4. ¿Qué le pide Julián a Renata al final?

Listening

Ask your instructor, a partner, or a text-to-speech tool to read the following short account aloud, twice. As you listen, mark whether each sentence uses the present perfect (PP) or the preterite (P).

"Este año ha sido muy importante para mí. En enero, terminé mis estudios de contabilidad. Después, he solicitado varios trabajos y ya he tenido dos entrevistas. Nunca he trabajado en una oficina grande, pero estoy lista para el cambio. La semana pasada, hablé con una empresa que me interesa mucho, y todavía no he recibido su respuesta."

Reading

Read the following message Camila wrote to a former classmate about her achievements since graduation.

Noticias desde la graduación

¡Hola, Tomás! Ha pasado mucho tiempo desde la graduación y quiero contarte todo lo que ha pasado. Primero, me he mudado a otra ciudad por un nuevo trabajo. Ha sido un cambio grande, pero estoy muy contenta. También he conseguido un puesto en el departamento de finanzas de una empresa internacional, y he aprendido muchísimo en estos meses.

¿Y tú? ¿Has viajado como siempre querías? Yo todavía no he viajado al extranjero este año, pero espero hacerlo pronto. Mis padres me han visitado dos veces desde que me mudé, y eso me ha ayudado mucho a sentirme menos sola.

Escríbeme pronto y cuéntame qué logros has tenido tú. Estoy segura de que también has hecho cosas increíbles.

Preguntas de comprensión:

  1. ¿Qué cambio grande ha hecho Camila?
  2. ¿Qué ha conseguido en su nuevo trabajo?
  3. ¿Camila ha viajado al extranjero este año?
  4. ¿Quién la ha visitado desde que se mudó?

Writing Workshop: Mis experiencias y logros

Your writing task for this chapter is a short message to a friend or family member describing your recent experiences and achievements, and at least one thing you haven't done yet.

  1. Estudia el modelo. Reread "Noticias desde la graduación" above. Underline every present perfect verb and circle every use of ya or todavía no.
  2. Planifica. List three experiences or achievements you want to mention and one thing you haven't done yet.
  3. Escribe el primer borrador. Write at least eight sentences in Spanish, using the present perfect for experiences and achievements. Use ya and todavía no at least once each.
  4. Revisa. Check your draft against the editing checklist below.
  5. Escribe la versión final. Produce a clean final version organized as a short, friendly message.

Lista de revisión:

  • I used haber correctly conjugated for each subject.
  • I used the correct past participle, including irregular forms where needed.
  • I did not change the participle's ending for gender or number.
  • I used ya and todavía no at least once each.
  • My articles, nouns, and adjectives agree in gender and number.
  • My message reads as a connected, friendly account rather than a disconnected list.

Speaking Practice

Práctica controlada

With a partner, take turns asking and answering: ¿Has _____ alguna vez? Use at least four different verbs (for example: viajar, probar, vivir, conocer).

Tarea comunicativa: Antes de la entrevista

With a partner, role-play the situation from the model dialogue: one person is preparing for a job interview, and the other asks whether specific tasks have already been completed. Use tú, since this is a conversation between friends.

Alternativa individual

If you are studying independently: record a two-minute account of your own experiences and achievements, using the present perfect at least five times and including ya and todavía no at least once each.

Culture and Communication

Culture in Context

Talking about achievements without sounding boastful is a skill that varies by context and personal style, not by a single national rule. In many settings, achievements are shared with modest framing — mentioning effort, gratitude, or the people who helped along the way — rather than with direct self-praise alone. In professional contexts such as job interviews, however, being clear and specific about one's own accomplishments is expected and appropriate. Reading the setting matters more than following one fixed formula.

Common Mistakes

Common Mistake

Error: Changing the past participle to agree with gender or number — Ella ha escrita la carta, instead of Ella ha escrito la carta.

Correction: In the present perfect, the past participle never changes form: Ella ha escrito la carta, not escrita. Agreement only affects participles used as adjectives, which is a separate structure.

Common Mistake

Error: Separating haber from the participle with another word — He siempre trabajado aquí, instead of Siempre he trabajado aquí.

Correction: Haber and the participle stay together; adverbs like siempre, ya, or nunca go before haber, not between it and the participle: Siempre he trabajado aquí, not He siempre trabajado.

Common Mistake

Error: Using a regular -ado/-ido ending for a verb with an irregular participle — He hacido la tarea, instead of He hecho la tarea.

Correction: High-frequency irregular participles like hecho, dicho, escrito, and visto must be memorized individually: He hecho la tarea, not He hacido la tarea.
