Invitaciones y acuerdos
Chapter Objectives
By the end of this chapter, you will be able to:
- Extend, accept, and decline invitations using natural, level-appropriate language.
- Soften a refusal so that it remains polite and preserves the relationship.
- Use podría and quisiera as controlled, formulaic forms of conditional politeness in requests and invitations.
- Combine direct and indirect object pronouns in a single sentence in high-frequency, formulaic patterns.
- Recognize, without producing, that a polite request can also be expressed with a dependent clause introduced by que.
- Coordinate a plan with another person: propose a time, confirm details, and adjust when something changes.
Communication Scenario
Rodrigo is settled into the building now, and he wants to thank Camila properly for all her advice. He decides to invite her to dinner on Saturday — but Camila already has plans, so she has to decline gracefully and propose something else. Meanwhile, the building manager, Sra. Duarte, sends Rodrigo a message inviting all the residents to a small welcome gathering, and Rodrigo has to reply. Every one of these exchanges depends on the same skill: knowing how to invite, how to accept, and how to say no without sounding cold.
- Think about the last time you had to turn down an invitation. What did you say to keep things friendly?
- Notice the difference between a direct request among friends and a more careful, cushioned request to someone you know less well.
Core Vocabulary: Invitar, aceptar y rechazar
This chapter activates a vocabulary domain built around invitations, agreements, and the softer language that surrounds them. Several items are formulaic and are learned first as fixed expressions.
| Palabra | Tipo | Significado | Nota |
|---|---|---|---|
| invitar | verbo -ar, regular | to invite | Frame: invitar a alguien a + infinitivo/sustantivo |
| quedar | verbo -ar, regular (pronominal en este uso) | to arrange to meet, to agree on plans | quedar en + infinitivo; distinto de quedarse |
| proponer | verbo -er, irregular (como poner) | to propose, suggest | Frame: proponer + infinitivo |
| confirmar | verbo -ar, regular | to confirm | Frecuente en mensajes escritos |
| avisar | verbo -ar, regular | to let (someone) know, notify | Frame: avisarle a alguien |
| expresión fija | I'm sorry, but... | Formulaica; introduce un rechazo suave |
| tener un compromiso | expresión fija | to have a prior commitment | Excusa cortés y neutral |
| ¿qué te parece...? | expresión fija | what do you think of...? | Formulaica; propone una idea |
| quisiera | forma formulaica (imperfecto de subjuntivo de querer) | I would like | Formulaica en este nivel; más suave que quiero |
| podría | forma formulaica (condicional de poder) | could, would be able to | Formulaica en este nivel; suaviza una petición |
Quisiera and podría are introduced here as fixed, formulaic politeness forms. Their full paradigms (the imperfect subjunctive and the conditional) belong to later volumes and are not analyzed productively in this chapter.
Pronunciation Focus
A polite request or a soft refusal in Spanish often carries a gentler, more rounded intonation than a direct statement. Compare the flat, even pitch of Quiero ir. with the softer rise-and-fall of Quisiera ir, si es posible. ↗↘ The words quisiera and podría are usually spoken slightly more slowly and with a gentler stress than an ordinary verb form, which helps signal courtesy even before the listener processes the words themselves.
Practice the contrast between puedo and podría. Both are stressed on the second syllable (pue-do, po-drí-a), but podría has one more syllable and its own written accent on the í, which keeps the stress from shifting to the -ia ending.
Grammar: Invitar, aceptar, rechazar
Purpose: extend and respond to invitations, soften requests with podría and quisiera, and combine object pronouns in common fixed patterns.
Invitar: Te invito a cenar el sábado. ¿Quieres venir a la fiesta? ¿Te gustaría acompañarnos?
Aceptar: Sí, me encantaría. Claro que sí. De acuerdo, ¿a qué hora?
Rechazar suavemente: a direct no without cushioning can sound abrupt. Spanish speakers typically soften a refusal with an apology, a reason, and often an alternative: Lo siento, pero ya tengo un compromiso ese día. ¿Qué te parece el domingo?
Notice the three-part pattern in a soft refusal: (1) a small apology, (2) a brief reason, and (3) an alternative or a promise to reconnect. All three parts are not always required, but including at least two makes a refusal sound complete rather than dismissive.
Camila, I'm inviting you to dinner on Saturday to thank you for all your advice.
¿Qué te parece el domingo?I'm sorry, but I already have a commitment on Saturday. What do you think about Sunday?
- Rodrigo: De acuerdo, quedamos el domingo entonces.Agreed, we'll meet on Sunday then.
Two formulaic forms make a request noticeably softer than the present tense: podría ("could," from poder) and quisiera ("would like," from querer). Both are more polite than puedo or quiero, and both are common in service situations and with people you address as usted.
- ¿Podría ayudarme con esto? (Could you help me with this?)
- Quisiera hacerle una pregunta. (I would like to ask you a question.)
- ¿Podrían confirmar la hora, por favor? (Could you [plural] confirm the time, please?)
At this stage, treat podría, podrías, podrían, and quisiera as a small, memorized set of polite request forms rather than as a fully analyzed verb paradigm. Their underlying grammar — the conditional and the imperfect subjunctive — will be developed in a later volume.
When a sentence has both an indirect object pronoun (me, te, le, nos, les) and a direct object pronoun (lo, la, los, las), the indirect object pronoun always comes first.
- ¿Me traes la sal? → ¿Me la traes?
- Te presto el libro. → Te lo presto.
- Nos manda las fotos. → Nos las manda.
This chapter practices only the high-frequency combinations with me, te, and nos. The combinations with le/les, which change to se before lo, la, los, las, are recognition-only for now and will become productive in a later chapter.
- ¿A qué invita Rodrigo a Camila?
- invitar a alguien a almorzar
- ¿Me das tu número? →
- Nos explica el problema. →
- Te presto mis apuntes. →
Listening
Ask your instructor, a partner, or a text-to-speech tool to read the following exchange aloud, twice. As you listen, mark whether each line is an invitation (I), an acceptance (A), or a soft refusal (R).
"Oye, ¿quieres venir a la fiesta de bienvenida el viernes? — Me encantaría, ¡gracias! — Sra. Duarte, ¿le gustaría acompañarnos también el sábado? — Lo siento, pero ya tengo un compromiso ese día. ¿Podríamos quedar otro día? — Claro que sí, no hay problema. Le aviso la próxima semana."

Reading
Read the following message that Sra. Duarte, the building manager, sends to all residents.
Your writing task for this chapter is a short pair of messages: an invitation and a reply that politely declines and proposes an alternative.
- Estudia el modelo. Reread the message from Sra. Duarte above. Mark the invitation, the request for confirmation, and every use of podría.
- Planifica. Choose an occasion and an audience. Decide whether you will address that audience with tú or with usted/ustedes, and stay consistent.
- Escribe el primer borrador. Write an invitation of at least four sentences, then a reply that declines politely and proposes an alternative, using at least one instance of podría or quisiera and at least one combined object pronoun.
- Revisa. Check your draft against the editing checklist below.
- Escribe la versión final. Produce a clean final version of both messages.
Lista de revisión:
- My invitation clearly states what, when, and where.
- My refusal includes an apology, a reason, or an alternative — not a bare no.
- I used podría or quisiera at least once as a fixed politeness form.
- I combined at least one pair of object pronouns correctly, in the right order.
- My address form is consistent throughout both messages.
- My accents and punctuation, including inverted marks, are correct.
Speaking Practice
Práctica controlada
With a partner, take turns inviting each other to three different activities. Your partner should accept once, decline softly once, and propose an alternative once.
Tarea comunicativa: Organizar un plan
With a partner, role-play a conversation like the model dialogue: one person invites the other to an event; the other declines the first proposed time, offers an alternative, and the two of you confirm a final plan. Use at least one instance of podría or quisiera and at least one combined object pronoun.
Alternativa individual
If you are studying independently: record yourself extending an invitation, then record a second clip in which you play the other person declining politely and proposing an alternative time.
Culture and Communication
In many Spanish-speaking communities, declining an invitation with a flat no can feel abrupt, even among close friends. It is common to soften a refusal with an apology, a brief reason, and often a concrete alternative, which signals that the relationship matters even when the specific plan does not work out. The exact balance of directness and softening varies by relationship, region, generation, and individual style — it is not a fixed national rule, and some contexts favor more direct responses than others.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Error: Declining an invitation with only no, without any softening — No, no puedo.
Correction: A bare no can sound cold in many contexts. Add an apology, a reason, or an alternative: Lo siento, pero ya tengo un compromiso. ¿Qué te parece otro día?
Error: Reversing the order of combined object pronouns — Lo me manda instead of the correct order.
Correction: The indirect object pronoun always comes before the direct object pronoun: Me lo manda, not Lo me manda.
Error: Treating podría as interchangeable with puedo in every context — Podría hablar español to mean simply "I can speak Spanish."
Correction: Podría signals politeness in a request, not general ability. For general ability, use puedo: Puedo hablar español. Reserve podría for softened requests such as ¿Podría ayudarme?
