Proyecto 3: Coordinar con otras personas

Un proyecto integrador de peticiones, mandatos, cortesía, planificación y cláusulas dependientes · Speak and Write Spanish: Everyday Independence and Connected Communication

Chapter Objectives

By the end of this chapter, you will be able to:

  1. Coordinate a shared plan with other people by combining commands, requests, polite alternatives, and dependent clauses in one connected task.
  2. Use affirmative and negative commands accurately, including correct pronoun attachment and accentuation.
  3. Use the present subjunctive after expressions of desire, need, and recommendation, and after expressions of doubt and possibility, within the same conversation or message.
  4. Use conditional politeness forms such as podría and quisiera to soften requests and proposals.
  5. Use real si clauses to state what will happen depending on how a plan develops.
  6. Produce an integrated spoken and written performance that demonstrates independent, coordinated communication with another person.

Communication Scenario

The hallway project has taught Rodrigo, Camila, and Sra. Duarte to plan together, give each other instructions, soften requests, and talk about what might happen. This chapter does not introduce a new grammar system. Instead, it asks you to bring everything from Chapters 11 through 14 together: commands, polite requests, subjunctive after desire and doubt, and real si clauses, all inside one coordinated task with another person.

  1. Think of a time you had to organize something with other people, where you had to give instructions, ask politely, and plan for more than one possible outcome. What kinds of sentences did you need?
  2. Review your work from Chapters 11 through 14 before you begin. This project asks you to use those systems together, not to learn something new.
Vocabulario recycled — Capítulo 15

Recycled Vocabulary: Coordinar un plan

This project chapter does not introduce a new vocabulary domain. Instead, it recycles the vocabulary of instructions, invitations, agreements, doubt, and possibility from Chapters 11 through 14, so that you can combine it freely in one coordinated task.

Pronunciation Review

Pronunciation Note — Accents Across the Unit

This unit has required careful attention to written accents in several different situations at once: the accent added when a pronoun attaches to an affirmative command (avísame, confírmalo), the accent on quizás, and the accents that distinguish question words like cuándo and cómo from their unaccented uses. As you complete this project, read your own sentences aloud and check that your pronunciation reflects where the stress falls, especially in commands with attached pronouns.

Practice saying a chain of instructions smoothly and without pausing awkwardly at each command, the way a person naturally would when organizing a plan out loud: Confirma con Marcos, avísame si no puede venir, y compra la pintura si no alcanza.

Grammar Review: Peticiones, mandatos y dependencia

Purpose: review and combine, without introducing anything new, the systems that let you instruct, request, recommend, and plan with another person under uncertainty.

Review — Mandatos afirmativos y negativos (Capítulo 11)

Commands remain active exactly as taught in Chapter 11: affirmative and negative tú commands, usted and ustedes commands, and pronoun attachment with the required accent in the affirmative form.

  • Confirma con Marcos. / No confirmes todavía.
  • Avísame si llueve. (pronoun attached, accent added)
Review — Cortesía condicional (Capítulo 12)

Podría and quisiera continue to soften requests and proposals without introducing the full conditional or imperfect subjunctive paradigms.

  • ¿Podrías confirmar antes del viernes?
  • Quisiera proponer un horario diferente.
Review — Subjuntivo después de deseo, necesidad y recomendación (Capítulo 13)

When one person's clause expresses what they want, need, or recommend for another person to do, the dependent clause uses the present subjunctive.

Doubt and possibility expressions still take the subjunctive, while real si clauses still use the present indicative, paired with a present, future, or command result.

This project does not add a new trigger, a new tense, or a new clause type. It asks you to select the correct system for each sentence you write or say, based on what that sentence is actually doing: commanding, requesting politely, expressing need, expressing doubt, or stating a real condition.

Rodrigo, could you confirm with Marcos today? I need us to know his answer before Friday.
RODRIGOClaro. Of course. I doubt he'll respond very quickly, but I'll write to him this afternoon.
DUARTEPerfecto. Perfect. And if he can't come, let me know so we can find someone else.
Yes, I'll let you know right away. Another thing: I recommend you buy a little more paint, just in case.
DUARTEBuena idea. Good idea. It's possible we'll need more than planned.
RODRIGOExacto. Exactly. Well, don't worry about the small details; we'll take care of them.
I appreciate it a lot. If everything goes well, we'll finish before three.

Preguntas de comprensión:

  1. ¿Qué necesita Sra. Duarte que haga Rodrigo?
  3. ¿Qué recomienda Rodrigo sobre la pintura?
  4. ¿Qué va a pasar si todo sale bien?

Guided Review Practice

  1. Confirma con Marcos hoy.
  2. Traiga la pintura el viernes.

Listening

Ask your instructor, a partner, or a text-to-speech tool to read the following coordination message aloud, twice. As you listen, write down each command, each polite request, each subjunctive clause of desire or doubt, and each si clause.

Reading

Read the following coordination email that Camila sends to the group, pulling together instructions, requests, and conditions before Saturday.

Muchas gracias otra vez. ¡Nos vemos el sábado!

Preguntas de comprensión:

Your writing task for this project is a coordination message in which you organize an activity with several other people, combining commands, polite requests, expressions of need or recommendation, expressions of doubt or possibility, and at least one real si clause.

  1. Estudia el modelo. Reread Camila's email above. Mark every command, every polite request, every subjunctive clause, and every si clause, and identify which system each one uses.
  2. Planifica. Choose an activity that requires coordinating with at least three other people (a project, an outing, a celebration, a work task). Decide what instructions, requests, and uncertain conditions are involved.
  3. Escribe el primer borrador. Write a coordination message of at least eight sentences that includes: one affirmative or negative command, one request softened with podría or quisiera, one clause of desire, need, or recommendation with the subjunctive, one clause of doubt or possibility with the subjunctive, and one real si clause.
  4. Revisa. Check your draft against the editing checklist below.
  5. Escribe la versión final. Produce a clean final version of your coordination message.

Lista de revisión:

  • My commands use correct forms and, if a pronoun is attached, the correct accent.
  • My polite requests with podría or quisiera are grammatically complete.
  • Every clause after a desire, need, or recommendation trigger uses the subjunctive.
  • Every clause after a doubt or possibility trigger uses the subjunctive.
  • My real si clauses use the present indicative, not the subjunctive.
  • My address form is consistent throughout the message.
  • My accents and punctuation, including inverted marks, are correct.

Speaking Practice

Práctica controlada

With a partner, take turns giving one command, one polite request, and one recommendation for an activity you are pretending to organize together.

Tarea comunicativa: Coordinar un evento

With a partner or small group, plan an event that depends on several people and at least one uncertain factor (weather, availability, supplies). Use commands to assign tasks, polite requests to ask for help, subjunctive clauses to express what you need or doubt, and a real si clause to agree on a backup plan.

Alternativa individual

If you are studying independently: record yourself giving instructions for an event to an imagined group, including at least one command, one polite request, one subjunctive clause of desire or doubt, and one real si clause.

Culture and Communication

Culture in Context

Coordinating a group task in Spanish often blends direct instruction with visible courtesy, even among people who know each other well. A direct command paired with por favor, or a softened request with podría or quisiera, can coexist comfortably in the same message. The balance between directness and softening tends to shift with age difference, familiarity, and the formality of the group, as seen in how Sra. Duarte and Rodrigo maintain usted while still speaking warmly and directly. There is no single correct balance; noticing how the people around you combine directness and courtesy in a given group is a useful ongoing skill.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Common Mistake

Error: Mixing address forms inside one coordination message — starting with usted and switching to tú for the same person without reason.

Correction: Choose one address form for each person and stay consistent throughout the message: Rodrigo, ¿podría confirmar...? not Rodrigo, ¿podrías... confirme...?

Common Mistake

Error: Using the subjunctive inside a real si clause after combining it with a command or request in the same sentence — Si pueda, avíseme.

Correction: The si clause itself stays in the present indicative even when it is followed by a command: Si puede, avíseme.

Common Mistake

Error: Forgetting the accent when a pronoun attaches to a command in the middle of a longer coordination message — Confirmame antes del jueves.

Correction: Pronoun attachment to an affirmative command still requires the accent: Confírmame antes del jueves.

Looking Ahead

Lo que ya sabes

You can now coordinate a shared task with other people by combining commands, polite requests with podría and quisiera, the present subjunctive after desire, need, and recommendation, the present subjunctive after doubt and possibility, and real si clauses. This project chapter has not introduced any new productive grammar; it has asked you to control all of Unit III's systems together in a single coordinated task, which is exactly the kind of integration the rest of Volume II will continue to build on.

Próximo capítulo

Chapter 16, Opiniones y explicaciones, opens Unit IV by moving from coordination language into opinion language, reasons, and connectors, contrasting creo que with no creo que in a new context. Keep your subjunctive control from Chapters 13 and 14 active, since opinion and belief expressions rely on the same indicative/subjunctive contrast you have just practiced.
