Opiniones y explicaciones
Chapter Objectives
By the end of this chapter, you will be able to:
- State an opinion clearly using expressions such as creo que, me parece que, and en mi opinión.
- Distinguish between affirmative opinion expressions, which take the indicative, and negated opinion expressions such as no creo que, which take the subjunctive.
- Give a reason for an opinion using porque, and connect ideas with por eso and entonces.
- Agree and disagree politely, softening disagreement in conversation.
- Read and interpret short opinion texts, identifying the writer's stance and reasoning.
- Write a short, organized opinion paragraph that states a position, gives reasons, and reaches a conclusion.
Communication Scenario
The hallway project is finished, and the neighborhood association wants to decide what to improve next: the park, the community garden, or the old meeting hall. Rodrigo, Camila, Sra. Duarte, and their neighbors each have an opinion, and the association needs everyone to explain not just what they think, but why. This chapter teaches you to state an opinion, support it with a reason, and respond to other people's opinions, whether you agree or disagree.
- Think of a decision your family, workplace, or community had to make. How did people explain their opinions? Did anyone disagree politely?
- What phrases do you already know in Spanish for saying what you think? This chapter will organize and expand them.
Core Vocabulary: Opiniones, razones y conexión
This chapter introduces vocabulary for stating opinions, giving reasons, and connecting ideas in a short argument or explanation. All items below are productive unless labeled otherwise.

| estoy de acuerdo / no estoy de acuerdo | I agree / I disagree | + con + sustantivo o cláusula |
| tienes razón / no tienes razón | you're right / you're not right | registro informal (tú) |
| por un lado... por otro lado... | on one hand... on the other hand... | contraste |
| porque | because | razón directa |
| por eso | that's why, for that reason | consecuencia |
| entonces | so, then | consecuencia lógica |
| además | furthermore, in addition | añadir una razón |

| lo importante es que... | the important thing is that... | + subjuntivo si expresa recomendación |
| la ventaja / la desventaja | the advantage / disadvantage | sustantivos, género fijo |
Vocabulary from earlier chapters — requests, doubt expressions, and connectors such as aunque — remains active and may be combined freely with this chapter's items.
Pronunciation Focus
When you state an opinion and then give a reason, Spanish speakers typically use a falling intonation at the end of the opinion clause, followed by a brief pause before porque: Creo que el parque necesita más atención, ↓ porque lo usan muchas familias. When you contrast two ideas with por un lado... por otro lado..., the voice tends to rise slightly on each half before falling at the end of the sentence.
Practice reading a short opinion aloud, pausing naturally at the comma before porque, por eso, or sin embargo, rather than running the whole sentence together without a break.
Grammar: Opinión, razón y conexión
Purpose: state an opinion, support it with a reason, and connect that opinion to its consequences or to a contrasting idea.
Affirmative opinion expressions such as creo que, me parece que, and el problema es que are followed by the indicative, because the speaker is presenting the opinion as a fact from their own point of view, not questioning its truth.
- Creo que el parque necesita más atención.I think the park needs more attention.
- Me parece que el jardín comunitario es una buena idea.It seems to me that the community garden is a good idea.
When the opinion expression is negated, the speaker is expressing doubt rather than presenting a fact, so the dependent clause uses the present subjunctive. This is the same subjunctive-after-doubt pattern from Chapter 14, now applied to opinion language.
- No creo que el salón de reuniones sea la mejor opción.I don't think the meeting hall is the best option.
- No me parece que todos estén de acuerdo todavía.It doesn't seem to me that everyone agrees yet.
Compare the pair directly: Creo que tiene razón (indicative, affirmative opinion) versus No creo que tenga razón (subjunctive, negated opinion). The verb changes because the speaker's stance toward the statement changes, not because the vocabulary changes.
Porque introduces a direct reason. Por eso and entonces introduce a consequence that follows from something already said. Además adds a second reason, and sin embargo introduces a contrast.
- El parque necesita más atención porque lo usan muchas familias. The park needs more attention because many families use it.
- Muchas familias usan el parque; por eso creo que es la mejor opción.Many families use the park; that's why I think it's the best option.
- El jardín es una buena idea. Sin embargo, cuesta más mantenerlo. The garden is a good idea. However, it costs more to maintain.
Listening
Ask your instructor, a partner, or a text-to-speech tool to read the following opinion aloud, twice. As you listen, write down each opinion expression, whether it uses the indicative or subjunctive, and each connector.
"En mi opinión, el parque es la prioridad este año. Creo que lo necesitan muchas familias, y por eso debemos empezar allí. Sin embargo, entiendo que el salón de reuniones también es importante. No creo que podamos hacer los dos proyectos al mismo tiempo, así que me parece justo proponer los dos y dejar que el grupo decida. Además, creo que todos deben poder explicar su opinión antes de votar."
| Expresión | Indicativo, subjuntivo, o conector |
|---|---|
| ______ | ______ |
| ______ | ______ |
| ______ | ______ |
| ______ | ______ |
| ______ | ______ |
Reading
Read the following short opinion post that Rodrigo writes for the neighborhood bulletin board.
Your writing task for this chapter is a short opinion paragraph about a decision affecting a group of people (a neighborhood, a workplace, a school, a family), combining an opinion, a reason, a connector, and a brief acknowledgment of a different point of view.
- Estudia el modelo. Reread Rodrigo's post above. Mark each opinion expression, each reason, and each connector, and note which verbs use the indicative and which use the subjunctive.
- Planifica. Choose a decision that affects more than one person. Decide your opinion, your main reason, and one point you can acknowledge from a different perspective.
- Escribe el primer borrador. Write a paragraph of at least six sentences that includes: one opinion with creo que or me parece que plus the indicative, one negated opinion with no creo que plus the subjunctive, at least one reason with porque, and at least one connector (por eso, entonces, además, or sin embargo).
- Revisa. Check your draft against the editing checklist below.
- Escribe la versión final. Produce a clean final version of your opinion paragraph.
Lista de revisión:
- My affirmative opinion expressions use the indicative.
- My negated opinion expressions use the subjunctive.
- I included at least one clear reason with porque.
- I used at least one connector accurately.
- My paragraph acknowledges a different point of view without abandoning my own opinion.
- My accents and punctuation, including inverted marks, are correct.
Speaking Practice
Práctica controlada
With a partner, take turns stating an opinion about a simple topic (a restaurant, a movie, a class schedule) and giving one reason with porque.
Tarea comunicativa: Decidir juntos
With a partner or small group, discuss a decision that affects your group (where to go, what to do, what to prioritize). Each person should state an opinion, give a reason, and respond to at least one other person's opinion, agreeing or disagreeing politely.
Alternativa individual
If you are studying independently: record yourself stating an opinion about a real or imagined neighborhood decision, including a reason, a connector, and a brief acknowledgment of a different point of view.
Culture and Communication
Expressing disagreement openly in a group discussion is common in many Spanish-speaking communities, but it is often softened with phrases that acknowledge the other person's point before disagreeing, such as entiendo tu razón, pero... or tienes razón en parte, sin embargo.... This pattern is not universal, and directness varies by region, generation, and setting, but noticing how the people around you soften disagreement is a useful skill for any group discussion in Spanish.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Error: Using the subjunctive after an affirmative opinion expression — Creo que el parque sea la prioridad.
Correction: Affirmative opinion expressions take the indicative: Creo que el parque es la prioridad.
Error: Using the indicative after a negated opinion expression — No creo que el salón es la mejor opción.
Correction: Negated opinion expressions take the subjunctive: No creo que el salón sea la mejor opción.
Error: Confusing porque (because, one word, no accent) with por qué (why, two words, with accent) — Por qué lo usan muchas familias.
Correction: Use porque to give a reason: Porque lo usan muchas familias. Reserve por qué for questions: ¿Por qué crees eso?

Looking Ahead
Lo que ya sabes
You can now state an opinion, distinguish between the indicative after affirmative opinion expressions and the subjunctive after negated ones, support your opinion with a reason, connect your ideas, and respond to another person's point of view with courtesy. This system builds directly on the doubt and possibility subjunctive from Chapter 14, and it will support the more connected, argumentative discourse of the rest of this unit.
