Proyecto final: Participar con independencia
Chapter Objectives
By the end of this capstone chapter, you will be able to:
- Participate in an extended conversation that combines narration, opinion, requests, and polite negotiation.
- Read a multi-paragraph text that integrates narration, opinion, and cause-result relationships, and interpret it with growing independence.
- Write a connected multi-paragraph text that narrates events, gives opinions, and maintains a consistent point of view and register.
- Complete a realistic service interaction that requires requests, commands or polite alternatives, and follow-up questions.
- Compare experiences and points of view using comparative structures developed across the volume.
- Reflect on your own progress across Volume II and identify which systems you control independently and which still need practice.
Communication Scenario
Camila's newsletter article about the neighborhood vote was a success, and the park project is finally moving forward. The neighborhood association is holding a closing meeting to celebrate, assign next steps, and thank the people who helped organize everything. Sra. Duarte asks Camila and Rodrigo to help coordinate three things before the meeting: confirming details with a local caterer, writing a short program for the event that tells the story of the project from start to finish, and preparing a few remarks that compare how the neighborhood felt at the beginning of the project with how it feels now. You will step into this final project as an active participant: coordinating a service request, reading and writing about the project's story, and speaking with independence about what the experience meant to the people involved.
- Think about a group project or community effort you have taken part in, from the beginning to the end. How did people's feelings change over time?
- What kinds of language do you think you will need to combine in this final project: requests, narration, opinions, comparisons, something else?
Volume Review: Sistemas activos
This chapter introduces no major new grammar, pronunciation, or vocabulary system. Instead, it asks you to combine, with growing independence, the systems you have already developed across Volume II. The table below reminds you of the systems that are fully active for this capstone project.
| Área | Sistemas activos para este proyecto |
|---|---|
Regional forms such as vos and vosotros/vosotras remain receptive only in this capstone chapter, exactly as in the rest of the volume. No new regional pathway is activated here.
Model Dialogue
Listening
Ask your instructor, a partner, or a text-to-speech tool to read the following short passage aloud, twice. As you listen, note the sequence of events, the emotion words, and the connector used to introduce the comparison at the end.
|---|---|
| ______ | ______ |
| ______ | ______ |
| ______ | ______ |
Reading
Read the following draft of the program Camila is writing for the closing meeting, which tells the story of the park project from beginning to end.
Your final writing task is to produce a connected, multi-paragraph text that narrates the story of a project or shared experience from beginning to end, combining narration, emotion, cause-result, and comparison.
- Elige tu historia. Choose a real or invented group project, event, or shared experience with a clear beginning, middle, and end.
- Planifica la secuencia. Note at least three key moments, the emotions connected to each one, and at least one cause-result relationship in the story.
- Escribe el párrafo inicial. Narrate how the project or event began, including at least one cause-result connector.
- Escribe el párrafo del desarrollo. Narrate what happened during the process, including at least one emotion expression with correct preterite/imperfect aspect.
- Escribe el párrafo final. Compare how things felt at the beginning with how they feel now, using a comparative structure or a diferencia de.
- Revisa. Check your draft against the editing checklist below.
Lista de revisión:
- My text has a clear beginning, middle, and end.
- I used at least one cause-result connector correctly.
- I used at least one emotion expression with correct preterite/imperfect aspect.
- I used a comparative structure or a diferencia de to compare two moments.
- My register is consistent and appropriate for a community program.
- My adjectives, articles, and verbs agree correctly.
- My accents, punctuation, and inverted marks are correct.
Speaking Practice
Práctica controlada
With a partner, take turns transforming direct requests into polite requests using podría or quisiera, as in the model dialogue.
Tarea comunicativa: Los comentarios de cierre
Prepare and deliver short remarks, as if speaking at the closing meeting, that compare how the neighborhood felt at the beginning of the project with how it feels now. Include at least one emotion expression and one comparative structure.
Alternativa individual
If you are studying independently: record yourself narrating a project or experience from beginning to end, including at least one request, one emotion expression, one cause-result connector, and one comparison.
Service Interaction Task
With a partner, role-play a phone call to confirm arrangements for an event, similar to the model dialogue. One person plays the customer; the other plays the service provider.
- The customer must make at least two polite requests using podría or quisiera.
- The service provider must ask at least one follow-up question and confirm at least one detail.
- The customer must explain at least one preference using a cause-result connector.
- Both speakers should maintain consistent usted address throughout, since this is a service context with someone they do not know personally.
If you are studying independently, write out both sides of the call, then read it aloud, playing each role in turn.
Culture and Communication
Closing events for community projects, such as the neighborhood association's meeting in this chapter, are common across many Spanish-speaking communities, though the specific customs vary widely by country, neighborhood, and generation. Such events often combine practical matters, like confirming food and logistics, with more reflective moments, like remarks that acknowledge how a project or community changed over time. Being able to move comfortably between a practical service call and a more reflective, narrative style of speaking, adjusting register and directness as needed, is a realistic and valuable skill for participating independently in community life in Spanish.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Error: Switching from usted to tú in the middle of a service call — ¿Podría confirmarme la hora? ¿Tienes el menú listo?
Correction: Address form should stay consistent within a single interaction unless the relationship or context clearly changes: ¿Podría confirmarme la hora? ¿Tiene el menú listo?
Error: Narrating an entire multi-stage story only in the preterite, without imperfect for background or ongoing feelings — Al principio, muchos vecinos dudaron del proyecto.
Correction: An ongoing attitude or background feeling is usually imperfect: Al principio, muchos vecinos dudaban del proyecto. Reserve the preterite for specific completed actions or reactions at one moment.
Error: Comparing two moments without a clear connector, leaving the contrast implicit — Antes dudaban. Ahora participan.
Correction: An explicit comparative connector makes the contrast clear to the listener or reader: A diferencia de antes, ahora los vecinos participan activamente.

Looking Ahead
Lo que ya sabes
Across Volume II, you moved from controlled A2 communication into independent B1 narration, explanation, and negotiation. You can now sustain conversations with repair and follow-up, narrate past experiences with control of preterite, imperfect, and present perfect, make and respond to polite requests and commands, use present subjunctive in controlled contexts, and write connected paragraphs that maintain a point of view, explain cause and result, and compare experiences. Camila, Rodrigo, Sra. Duarte, and Marcos's story of the neighborhood park has given you a consistent context for practicing all of these systems together, from a first diagnostic conversation in Chapter 1 to this final project.
Fin de Volumen II
This capstone project completes Volume II: Everyday Independence and Connected Communication. Volume III, Independent Communication and Connected Discourse, will build directly on the systems you have consolidated here, extending your narration, argument, and register control into longer, more independent B1-to-B2 communication, including media comprehension, academic and workplace discourse, and broader regional recognition.
