Noticias y actualidad

Resúmenes de noticias, el se impersonal, reconocimiento de la voz pasiva y el registro formal · Speak and Write Spanish: Independent Communication and Connected Discourse

Chapter Objectives

By the end of this chapter, you will be able to:

  1. Summarize the main idea and key details of a short news item using organized, connected sentences.
  2. Use impersonal se to describe general practices, procedures, and public information without naming a specific subject.
  3. Recognize, without being required to produce, passive-voice constructions with ser + past participle in news writing.
  4. Distinguish everyday conversational register from the more formal register typical of news reporting.
  5. Read a short news-style text and identify its main purpose, key details, and source of information.
  6. Write a brief, organized summary of a news item in a register appropriate for public communication.

Communication Scenario

A few weeks after submitting their profiles to Voces del Barrio, Camila and Rodrigo notice that the neighborhood park project they organized has attracted the attention of a local news outlet. A short article appears online describing new investment in community spaces across the city, and their park is mentioned by name. Rodrigo forwards the article to Camila, and the two of them begin discussing what it says, how the information is presented, and how the story differs from the way they would describe the project to a friend. As you work through this chapter, you will learn to read, summarize, and discuss short news items, noticing how public and formal writing sounds different from everyday conversation.

  1. What kinds of local news stories do you usually read or hear about?
  2. How does the way a news article describes an event differ from how a friend might describe the same event to you?
Vocabulario — Capítulo 2

Core Vocabulary

This chapter's vocabulary domain focuses on news, public information, and civic life. These words support reading, summarizing, and discussing news items throughout the volume.

la fuentesource (of information)feminine noun; also means "fountain" in other contexts
el informereportmasculine noun; formal register
anunciarto announceregular -ar verb; often used with impersonal se
invertir (en)to invest (in)stem-changing e→ie; used in civic and financial contexts
la inversióninvestmentfeminine noun; related to invertir

público/apublicadjective; agrees in gender and number

All items in this table are productive for this chapter. Additional formal or journalistic vocabulary will appear later in the volume as clearly labeled recognition content.

Pronunciation Focus

Pronunciation and Intelligibility

News-style Spanish tends to use longer sentences with more subordinate information, so this chapter continues building control of connected speech and stress in cognates and formal vocabulary.

  • Practice stress in longer words such as inversión, anunciar, and reciente, where the stressed syllable does not always match English stress patterns.
  • Link words smoothly across clause boundaries, as in según_informó_el_ayuntamiento, so that longer formal sentences remain intelligible rather than choppy.
  • Maintain the five stable vowels even in unstressed syllables of longer words, avoiding the vowel reduction that is natural in English.

No single regional accent is required; the goal remains clear, stable, broadly intelligible pronunciation, now applied to longer and more formal sentences.

Grammar and Sentence Patterns: El se impersonal y la voz pasiva

Purpose: describe general practices, procedures, and public information without naming who performs the action, as news writing often does.

You have already used reflexive and pronominal se in earlier volumes. This chapter introduces a different function of se: the impersonal se, which describes an action without identifying a specific subject. It is extremely common in news, instructions, and public information.

  • Se anuncia una nueva inversión en los parques del barrio. A new investment in the neighborhood's parks is announced. (literally: "One announces...")
  • Según el ayuntamiento, se invertirá más dinero en espacios públicos este año. According to city hall, more money will be invested in public spaces this year.

Notice that impersonal se uses a third-person singular verb and does not name who is performing the action. The focus is on the action or the information itself, which is typical of formal and public writing.

This chapter also introduces, for recognition only, the passive voice formed with ser + past participle. You will see this pattern in news-style readings, but you are not expected to produce it independently yet.

  • El proyecto fue mencionado en el artículo del periódico local. The project was mentioned in the local newspaper's article. (recognition only)
  • Los fondos serán distribuidos entre varios barrios de la ciudad. The funds will be distributed among several neighborhoods in the city. (recognition only)

For now, when you want to describe an action without naming who does it, use impersonal se productively. Recognize the passive voice when you see it in readings, but continue using se or an active sentence with a clear subject in your own writing and speaking.

Look, I found this article. It talks about our park.
CAMILA¡Qué buena noticia! ¿Qué dice exactamente? What great news! What exactly does it say?
RODRIGOSegún el artículo, se anuncia una nueva inversión en los espacios públicos de varios barrios, incluido el nuestro.According to the article, a new investment in the public spaces of several neighborhoods, including ours, is being announced.
CAMILAQué formal suena eso. Nosotros simplemente diríamos "van a poner más dinero en los parques".That sounds so formal. We would simply say "they're going to put more money into the parks."
RODRIGOExacto. El artículo también dice que el proyecto fue mencionado en una reunión reciente del ayuntamiento.Exactly. The article also says the project was mentioned at a recent city hall meeting.
CAMILA¿Y sabemos cuándo se va a usar ese dinero? And do we know when that money is going to be used?
RODRIGOTodavía no. Según informó el ayuntamiento, se publicará más información en las próximas semanas. Not yet. According to what city hall reported, more information will be published in the coming weeks.
CAMILABueno, voy a seguir buscando noticias. Esto le va a interesar a mucha gente del barrio.Well, I'm going to keep looking for news. This is going to interest a lot of people in the neighborhood.

Listening

Ask your instructor, a partner, or a text-to-speech tool to read the following short news announcement aloud, twice. As you listen, identify the main information and the source cited.

Your writing task is to produce a short, organized summary of a news item, similar to the article about the neighborhood park, using impersonal se and an appropriately formal register.

  1. Elige o inventa una noticia breve. It may be about your own community, school, workplace, or a topic you find interesting.
  2. Escribe el titular. Write a short headline that summarizes the main idea.
  3. Escribe el resumen. In two or three sentences, summarize the main information using at least two examples of impersonal se.
  4. Cita una fuente. Add one sentence introducing a source of information using según informó or según indicó.
  5. Revisa. Check your draft against the editing checklist below.

Lista de revisión:

  • My summary has a headline and a clear main idea.
  • I used impersonal se at least twice.
  • I cited a source using según informó or según indicó.
  • My register is appropriately formal for a news summary.
  • My accents, punctuation, and inverted marks are correct.

Speaking Practice

Práctica controlada

With a partner, take turns transforming sentences with a general subject ("la gente," "todos") into sentences with impersonal se, as in the Grammar section.

Tarea comunicativa: Reportero y vecino

With a partner, role-play a short interview: one person is a reporter asking about a piece of local news, and the other is a neighborhood resident responding with information, using impersonal se at least twice.

Alternativa individual

If you are studying independently: record yourself presenting your written news summary aloud, as if announcing it to a small audience, using a formal register.

Culture and Communication

Culture in Context

Local and national news sources across Spanish-speaking countries vary widely in format, tone, and platform, from printed newspapers to online outlets, radio, and social media. Impersonal se and passive constructions are common across most of these formats because they allow writers to present information and public announcements without focusing on who specifically is responsible, which is typical of formal and institutional communication in many contexts, not only in Spanish.

Regional Note (Recognition Only)

Names for local government vary by country and region. El ayuntamiento is widely used in Spain and parts of Latin America, while la alcaldía or la municipalidad are common in other regions. All three refer to comparable local government institutions. You may encounter any of these terms in later readings; for now, recognizing them is sufficient.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Common Mistake

Error: Using a plural verb with impersonal se when the noun that follows is plural — Se anuncian una nueva inversión.

Correction: With impersonal se describing a general action rather than a specific plural subject that agrees with the verb, keep the verb in the third-person singular unless the following noun is clearly the grammatical subject: Se anuncia una nueva inversión. (Compare with a different structure: Se anuncian nuevas inversiones, where inversiones is the plural subject and agreement is required.)

Common Mistake

Error: Trying to produce the passive voice with ser + past participle in everyday conversation — El parque es visitado por mucha gente cada fin de semana, when a simpler active sentence would sound more natural in speech.

Correction: In everyday conversation, prefer an active sentence or impersonal se: Mucha gente visita el parque cada fin de semana or Se visita mucho el parque los fines de semana. Save the passive voice for recognition in formal or written contexts for now.

Common Mistake

Error: Assuming all news sources across Spanish-speaking countries use identical vocabulary and formats — Todos los periódicos hispanohablantes usan las mismas palabras y el mismo formato.

Correction: Use language that acknowledges variation: El vocabulario y el formato de las noticias varían según el país, la región, y el medio de comunicación.

Looking Ahead

Lo que ya sabes

You have expanded your ability to read and summarize public information, using impersonal se to describe general actions and recognizing the passive voice in news-style writing. Camila and Rodrigo's park project, now mentioned in local news, continues to connect this chapter's grammar and vocabulary to a realistic communicative context.

Próximo capítulo: Causa, consecuencia y contraste

Chapter 3 builds on this chapter's public and informational focus by introducing advanced connectors for cause, consequence, and contrast, as Camila and Rodrigo discuss the reasons behind the city's investment decisions and the possible effects for their community.
