Causa, consecuencia y contraste

Conectores avanzados, lógica de párrafo y las relaciones de causa, consecuencia y contraste · Speak and Write Spanish: Independent Communication and Connected Discourse

Chapter Objectives

By the end of this chapter, you will be able to:

  1. Connect ideas of cause and consequence using por eso, porque, and ya que.
  2. Introduce contrast between two ideas using sin embargo and en cambio.
  3. Recognize, without being required to produce, concessive contrast with aunque.
  4. Combine sentences using the relative pronoun que to add descriptive or explanatory information.
  5. Read a short opinion-style paragraph and identify its cause-consequence and contrast structure.
  6. Write an organized paragraph that connects at least one cause, one consequence, and one contrast.

Communication Scenario

A week after the news article about the park investment, Camila and Rodrigo attend a small neighborhood meeting where residents discuss the project. Some neighbors are enthusiastic because the investment will improve the play area and green space; others are more cautious, pointing out that similar promises in the past were not always kept. As Camila and Rodrigo listen and take part in the conversation, they need to explain reasons, describe results, and point out differences between opinions without oversimplifying anyone's position. This chapter teaches you to connect ideas the way a thoughtful speaker or writer does: explaining why something happens, what results from it, and how one idea contrasts with another.

  1. Think of a recent decision, at home, school, or work, that had both supporters and skeptics. What were the reasons on each side?
  2. How do you usually signal to a listener that you are about to contrast two ideas?
Vocabulario — Capítulo 3

Core Vocabulary

This chapter's vocabulary domain focuses on reasoning, opinion, and discussion at a neighborhood meeting. These words support connecting ideas clearly in speech and writing.

el compromisocommitmentmasculine noun; false-friend caution: not "compromise" in the English sense
vecino/aneighbornoun and adjective; agrees in gender and number

All items in this table are productive for this chapter, with the exception of the formal variant el motivo por el cual, which is recognition only at this level.

Pronunciation Focus

Pronunciation and Intelligibility

Connector words carry the logical structure of a sentence, so they need to be pronounced clearly even though they are often unstressed in the sentence as a whole.

  • Practice a brief, natural pause before sin embargo and por otro lado when they begin a new sentence, which helps listeners hear the shift in direction.
  • Keep porque and por eso distinct: porque introduces a reason and is usually unstressed within the clause, while por eso begins a new independent clause and carries slightly more weight.
  • Continue linking words smoothly across clause boundaries, as in a_pesar_de_las_dudas, so that longer sentences with subordinate information remain intelligible.

No single regional accent is required; the goal remains clear, stable, broadly intelligible pronunciation, now applied to sentences that reason and contrast.

Grammar and Sentence Patterns: Conectores de causa, consecuencia y contraste

Purpose: explain why something happens, describe its result, and point out how one idea contrasts with another, moving beyond simple sentences joined only by y, o, and pero.

You already use porque to give a reason and pero to show a simple contrast. This chapter develops that foundation into a fuller system for connecting ideas across a paragraph.

Causa y consecuencia

  • Muchos vecinos confían en el proyecto porque el ayuntamiento ya cumplió promesas similares. Many neighbors trust the project because city hall already kept similar promises.
  • El ayuntamiento ya cumplió promesas similares; por eso, muchos vecinos confían en el proyecto. City hall already kept similar promises; that's why many neighbors trust the project.
  • Ya que el proyecto todavía no tiene fecha exacta, algunos vecinos prefieren esperar. Since the project doesn't yet have an exact date, some neighbors prefer to wait.

Porque introduces a reason and normally follows the result it explains. Por eso begins a new clause and points back to a reason already stated. Ya que functions like porque but can also open the sentence, placing the reason first.

Contraste

  • Algunos vecinos apoyan el proyecto; sin embargo, otros prefieren esperar más información. Some neighbors support the project; however, others prefer to wait for more information.
  • Camila confía en el proyecto. Rodrigo, en cambio, todavía tiene dudas. Camila trusts the project. Rodrigo, on the other hand, still has doubts.
  • Por otro lado, algunos vecinos recuerdan promesas anteriores que no se cumplieron. On the other hand, some neighbors remember earlier promises that were not kept.

Sin embargo and por otro lado typically begin a new sentence or clause after a comma or semicolon. En cambio usually follows the subject it contrasts, as in the example with Rodrigo.

This chapter also introduces, for recognition only, concessive contrast with aunque. You will see and understand this pattern, but you are not expected to produce it independently yet, since it interacts with clause structures not yet activated.

  • Aunque algunos vecinos tienen dudas, la mayoría apoya la inversión. Although some neighbors have doubts, the majority supports the investment. (recognition only)

El pronombre relativo que

To connect two related sentences into one, more fluent sentence, use the relative pronoun que to add a description or explanation about a noun already mentioned.

  • Algunos vecinos recuerdan promesas anteriores. Las promesas no se cumplieron. → Algunos vecinos recuerdan promesas anteriores que no se cumplieron. Some neighbors remember earlier promises that were not kept.
  • El proyecto tiene un plan claro. El plan incluye el área de juegos y la zona verde. → El proyecto tiene un plan claro que incluye el área de juegos y la zona verde. The project has a clear plan that includes the play area and the green space.

Que never changes form for gender or number, which makes it a reliable and productive tool for combining sentences at this level.

Look, not all the neighbors think the same about the project.
CAMILAEs cierto. Muchos confían en el proyecto porque el ayuntamiento ya cumplió promesas similares en otros barrios. That's true. Many trust the project because city hall already kept similar promises in other neighborhoods.
RODRIGOSin embargo, esa señora de allí tiene dudas. Dice que hubo una promesa anterior que no se cumplió.However, that woman over there has doubts. She says there was an earlier promise that wasn't kept.
CAMILAPor eso quiere más información antes de confiar completamente. That's why she wants more information before trusting completely.
(Se acercan a la moderadora.)
RODRIGODisculpe, ¿el proyecto tiene un plan que incluya una fecha exacta?Excuse me, does the project have a plan that includes an exact date?
MODERADORATodavía no hay fecha exacta. Ya que el presupuesto se aprobó apenas la semana pasada, el calendario se publicará pronto. There isn't an exact date yet. Since the budget was only approved last week, the calendar will be published soon.
CAMILAEntiendo. Por otro lado, ¿se van a mantener reuniones como esta para informar a los vecinos?I understand. On the other hand, will meetings like this one continue to inform the neighbors?
MODERADORASí, habrá una reunión cada mes. Así, los vecinos que tienen dudas podrán hacer preguntas directamente.Yes, there will be a meeting every month. That way, the neighbors who have doubts will be able to ask questions directly.

Preguntas de comprensión:

  1. ¿Por qué confían muchos vecinos en el proyecto, según Camila?
  2. ¿Por qué tiene dudas la señora que menciona Rodrigo?
  3. ¿Por qué no hay todavía una fecha exacta, según la moderadora?
  4. ¿Qué van a hacer los vecinos que tienen dudas, según la moderadora?

Listening

Ask your instructor, a partner, or a text-to-speech tool to read the following short comment aloud, twice. As you listen, identify one reason, one consequence, and one contrast.

"Muchos vecinos confían en el proyecto porque el ayuntamiento ya cumplió promesas similares en otros barrios. Sin embargo, algunos todavía tienen dudas, ya que una promesa anterior en este barrio no se cumplió. Por eso, la moderadora explicó que habrá una reunión cada mes para informar a los vecinos."

PreguntaRespuesta
¿Cuál es la razón por la que muchos vecinos confían?______
¿Cuál es el contraste que se menciona?______
¿Cuál es la consecuencia mencionada al final?______

Reading

Read the following practical text: a short flyer that the neighborhood association distributed after the meeting, summarizing the discussion for residents who could not attend.

Your writing task is to produce a short, practical message, similar to the flyer you just read, summarizing an opinion or a decision using cause, consequence, and contrast connectors.

  1. Elige un tema. It may be about the park project, a decision at your school or workplace, or another topic you find relevant.
  2. Escribe una razón. Explain one reason using porque or ya que.
  3. Escribe una consecuencia. State one result using por eso or como resultado.
  4. Escribe un contraste. Present a different point of view using sin embargo, en cambio, or por otro lado.
  5. Une dos oraciones con que. Combine at least one pair of sentences using the relative pronoun que.
  6. Revisa. Check your draft against the editing checklist below.

Lista de revisión:

  • My message has a clear reason, consequence, and contrast.
  • I used at least one connector from each category.
  • I combined at least one pair of sentences using que.
  • My register is appropriate for a message to neighbors, classmates, or colleagues.
  • My accents, punctuation, and inverted marks are correct.

Speaking Practice

Práctica controlada

With a partner, take turns combining two short sentences into one, using por eso, sin embargo, en cambio, or que, as in the Grammar section.

Tarea comunicativa: Dos vecinos, dos opiniones

With a partner, role-play two neighbors discussing the park project: one is generally supportive and the other has reasonable doubts. Each person should give at least one reason, one consequence, and use one contrast connector.

Alternativa individual

If you are studying independently: record yourself presenting both points of view on a topic of your choice, using at least one connector from each category taught in this chapter.

Culture and Communication

Culture in Context

Neighborhood associations, community boards, and public meetings exist in many forms across Spanish-speaking communities, though their structure, frequency, and level of formal authority vary considerably by country, city, and neighborhood. Learning to state a reason, acknowledge a counterpoint, and describe a result respectfully is useful in many public and civic settings, not only in formal debate.

Regional Note (Recognition Only)

Formal spoken and written argumentation sometimes uses el motivo por el cual or la razón por la cual instead of a simple que clause, especially in institutional or academic writing in various countries. You may encounter this pattern in later, more formal readings; for now, recognizing it is sufficient.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Common Mistake

Error: Confusing porque and por eso — Muchos vecinos confían en el proyecto, por eso el ayuntamiento ya cumplió promesas similares.

Correction: Porque introduces the reason after the result; por eso introduces the result after the reason. Muchos vecinos confían en el proyecto porque el ayuntamiento ya cumplió promesas similares (reason follows) or El ayuntamiento ya cumplió promesas similares; por eso, muchos vecinos confían en el proyecto (result follows).

Common Mistake

Error: Writing sin embargo as one word or misplacing it mid-sentence without the pause it requires — El proyecto sinembargo tiene dudas.

Correction: Sin embargo is always two words and usually begins a new sentence or independent clause, typically followed by a comma: Algunos vecinos apoyan el proyecto. Sin embargo, otros prefieren esperar.

Common Mistake

Error: Trying to produce aunque clauses productively at this stage — Aunque yo dude, apoyo el proyecto.

Correction: Aunque is recognition-only in this chapter. For productive contrast, use pero, sin embargo, or en cambio instead: Yo tengo dudas, pero apoyo el proyecto.

Looking Ahead

Lo que ya sabes

You have expanded your ability to reason and connect ideas in Spanish, using cause, consequence, and contrast connectors along with the relative pronoun que. Camila and Rodrigo's park project, now the subject of a neighborhood meeting, continues to connect this chapter's grammar and vocabulary to a realistic communicative context.

Próximo capítulo: Explicar procesos

Chapter 4 builds on this chapter's reasoning focus by introducing instructions and processes, as Camila and Rodrigo learn how the neighborhood association explains the steps and procedures involved in moving the park project forward.
