Proyecto 1: Informe breve
Chapter Objectives
This is an integrated assessment chapter. By the end of it, you will be able to:
- Summarize the main ideas of a short spoken or written text using discourse markers and impersonal se from Chapters 1–4.
- Explain a simple process clearly, in order, using sequencing connectors and passive-like se.
- Present a personal viewpoint on a community topic, supported by a reason and a connector of cause, consequence, or contrast.
- Address a small group of listeners appropriately using ustedes, consolidating the plural address system introduced across this unit.
- Produce a short written report (informe breve) that integrates identity and community vocabulary, causal and concessive connectors, and process description.
- Complete a self-assessment of your progress across Chapters 1–4 using the assessment rubric provided in this chapter.
Communication Scenario
The neighborhood association has asked a small working group — Camila, Rodrigo, and don Ernesto among them — to prepare a brief report for the next general meeting. The report should summarize what has happened with the park project so far, explain the registration process to anyone who has not yet completed it, and present the group's recommendation about how the association should move forward. Camila is asked to present the report to the full group of neighbors at the meeting, addressing them as ustedes. This chapter brings together the identity, news, connector, and process language from Unidad I into a single integrated task: summarizing, explaining, and taking a position, out loud and in writing.
- Think of a short report, update, or summary you have given to a group recently. What did you include first, and what did you leave out?
- When you speak to a group of people rather than one person, does your own language change? How?
Consolidation Vocabulary
No new vocabulary domain is introduced in this chapter. The following table recycles and organizes high-value items from Chapters 1–4 that this project specifically requires. Review any item you do not recognize before beginning the writing workshop.
| Palabra o expresión | Significado | Capítulo de origen |
|---|---|---|
| la perspectiva | perspective, point of view | Cap. 1 |
| la comunidad | community | Cap. 1 |
| según | according to | Cap. 2 |
| por eso | therefore, that's why | Cap. 3 |
| sin embargo | however, nevertheless | Cap. 3 |
| aunque (+ indicativo, reconocimiento) | although | Cap. 3 |
| el trámite | procedure, formality | Cap. 4 |
| el requisito | requirement | Cap. 4 |
| el plazo | deadline | Cap. 4 |
| recomendar | to recommend | Cap. 4 |
| a mi parecer / en mi opinión | in my opinion | Cap. 1, recycled |
This table is a recycling reference, not a new productive list. Every item was already productive by the end of Chapter 4.
Pronunciation Focus
A brief oral report has a different rhythm than a two-person conversation: the speaker holds the floor for longer stretches, so phrasing and pacing matter even more than in earlier chapters.
- Group your sentences into short breath units around connectors: Según el informe... / por eso... / sin embargo... A short pause before and after these connectors helps listeners track your organization.
- When addressing ustedes, keep the final -n of verb endings (ustedes tienen, ustedes pueden) clearly audible; dropping it can make the form sound singular.
- Continue distinguishing se (impersonal) from sé ("I know") as you narrate the registration process within your report.
No single regional accent is required for this presentation; the goal is a report that a room full of neighbors could follow without asking you to repeat yourself.
Grammar Consolidation: Resumir, explicar y opinar
Purpose: this section does not introduce a new productive grammar system. It consolidates identity and discourse markers (Ch. 1), impersonal se in news contexts (Ch. 2), cause/consequence/contrast connectors (Ch. 3), sequencing and process se (Ch. 4), and brings ustedes fully into productive use for addressing a group.
Consolidando: resumir con marcadores de discurso
- Según el informe, el proyecto del parque tiene el apoyo de la mayoría de los vecinos. According to the report, the park project has the support of most of the neighbors.
- En resumen, se necesita completar la inscripción antes del viernes. In summary, it's necessary to complete the registration before Friday.
Consolidando: causa, consecuencia y contraste
- Muchos vecinos apoyan el proyecto; por eso, la asociación recomienda continuar con la inscripción. Many neighbors support the project; that's why the association recommends continuing with registration.
- El proyecto es popular; sin embargo, todavía faltan algunos documentos. The project is popular; however, some documents are still missing.
Consolidando: explicar un proceso con secuencia y se impersonal
- Primero, se completa el formulario; luego, se entrega en la oficina antes del plazo. First, the form is completed; then, it's submitted at the office before the deadline.
Ustedes: dirigirse a un grupo
Earlier chapters used ustedes receptively and in a few controlled contexts. In this chapter, ustedes becomes fully productive as the default way to address more than one person under this course's Latin American production model — whether the group is formal, informal, young, or older. There is no separate informal plural form to choose in this system; register is instead carried by word choice, tone, and content.
- Buenas tardes a todos. Ustedes ya conocen el proyecto del parque. Good afternoon, everyone. You (plural) already know about the park project.
- Como ustedes pueden ver en el informe, la mayoría apoya continuar. As you (plural) can see in the report, the majority supports continuing.
- Les recomendamos que completen la inscripción antes del viernes. We recommend that you (plural) complete the registration before Friday.
Verbs addressing ustedes use the same third-person-plural form as ellos/ellas (ustedes tienen, like ellos tienen). This is different from the Peninsular system, in which vosotros/vosotras would be used for an informal group and ustedes reserved for a formal one; that Peninsular pathway remains receptive-only in this course.
A brief report differs from a two-person dialogue in one important way: you are speaking to several listeners at once, and you generally cannot rely on immediate back-and-forth turn-taking to repair misunderstandings. Organize your report so a listener can follow it the first time: state the topic, summarize, explain the process, and close with your recommendation, in that order.
- ¿Puedes venir a la reunión? → _____
Listening
Ask your instructor, a partner, or a text-to-speech tool to read the following short report aloud, twice. As you listen, identify the summary, the process, and the recommendation.
"Buenas tardes a todos. Según el informe, la mayoría de ustedes apoya el proyecto del parque; sin embargo, todavía faltan algunas inscripciones. Para completar el trámite, primero se completa el formulario y luego se entrega en la oficina antes del viernes. En resumen, la asociación recomienda continuar con el proyecto."
| Elemento | ¿Presente? (Sí/No) |
|---|---|
| Un resumen del apoyo de los vecinos | ______ |
| Los pasos del trámite de inscripción | ______ |
| Una recomendación final | ______ |
| Una pregunta de un vecino | ______ |
Reading
Read the following draft of the association's brief report, prepared before the meeting.
Writing Workshop: El informe breve
Your integrated writing task is to produce a short report (informe breve) of five to eight sentences that summarizes information, explains a process, and presents a recommendation — the three communicative functions of this unit.
- Elige un tema. It may be the park project or another community topic you have discussed in this unit.
- Resume la información. Open with a one- or two-sentence summary, using según or en resumen.
- Explica un proceso. Include at least two sentences describing a simple procedure, using sequencing connectors and impersonal se.
- Usa un conector de causa, consecuencia o contraste. Connect at least one pair of ideas with por eso, sin embargo, or aunque.
- Presenta tu recomendación. Close with your own viewpoint, using a nuestro parecer or en mi opinión.
- Revisa. Check your draft against the editing checklist below.
Lista de revisión:
- My report opens with a clear summary.
- I explained a process using sequencing connectors and impersonal se with correct agreement.
- I used at least one connector of cause, consequence, or contrast.
- I closed with a clearly stated recommendation or viewpoint.
- My accents, punctuation, and inverted marks are correct.
- I did not introduce any grammar system beyond Chapters 1–4.
Speaking Practice
Práctica controlada
With a partner, take turns reading aloud the three parts of the Model Exchange report (summary, process, recommendation), practicing clear phrasing around the connectors.
Tarea comunicativa: Presentar un informe
Present your written report aloud to a small group (real or simulated), addressing your listeners as ustedes throughout. At least one listener should ask a follow-up question, which you should answer using a connector from this unit.
Alternativa individual
If you are studying independently: record yourself presenting your report as if to a group of neighbors, then listen back and check your use of ustedes and the connectors.
Culture and Communication
Community associations, neighborhood boards, and similar volunteer groups are common across many Spanish-speaking communities, though their structure, formality, and terminology vary by country and city. Presenting a brief spoken or written report to a group — summarizing a situation, explaining a procedure, and recommending a course of action — is a common genre in these settings, as well as in school, workplace, and civic contexts more broadly.
In some Spain-oriented contexts, a speaker addressing a group of friends or family might use vosotros/vosotras instead of ustedes, reserving ustedes for more formal or distant groups. This distinction remains recognition-only in this course; ustedes is the single productive plural address form under the default Latin American model, regardless of formality.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Error: Dropping the final -n when addressing a group — Ustedes tiene que completar el formulario.
Correction: Ustedes takes the same verb form as ellos/ellas, with the final -n: Ustedes tienen que completar el formulario.
Error: Overusing y to connect every idea in a report instead of using a more precise connector — El proyecto tiene apoyo y faltan documentos.
Correction: When the second idea contrasts with the first, use sin embargo or aunque instead of y: El proyecto tiene apoyo; sin embargo, faltan documentos.
Error: Making the impersonal se verb agree with the wrong noun in a report sentence — Se entrega los formularios en la oficina.
Correction: The verb must agree with the noun that follows: Se entregan los formularios en la oficina (plural noun, plural verb).
