Decisiones y consecuencias

El futuro, el condicional y el comentario hipotético · Speak and Write Spanish: Independent Communication and Connected Discourse

Chapter Objectives

By the end of this chapter, you will be able to:

  1. Form and use the future tense to talk about plans, predictions, and likely outcomes.
  2. Form and use the conditional to make polite suggestions, describe hypothetical actions, and soften recommendations.
  3. Use the future and conditional to express probability about the present and the past (Serán las nueve; Serían las nueve cuando llegó).
  4. Recognize the shared set of irregular stems used by both the future and the conditional.
  5. Comment on decisions and their possible consequences in organized spoken and written discourse.
  6. Read and discuss a passage in which neighbors weigh a decision about the park project.

Communication Scenario

Now that Camila and Rodrigo understand the earlier history of the park project, they must decide how to move forward. At the next neighborhood meeting, the association will vote on whether to proceed. Before the vote, different neighbors share what they think will happen if the project goes ahead, and what they would do differently this time. Don Ernesto, still cautious after the earlier failure, offers his own predictions about what the outcome will probably be.

  1. Think of a decision your community, school, or workplace faced. What did people predict would happen? What did people say they would do differently?
  2. In English, how do you talk about something that will probably happen, versus something you would do under different circumstances? Do these sound like the same kind of sentence to you, or different?
Vocabulario — Capítulo 7

Core Vocabulary: Decisiones, consecuencias y probabilidad

This chapter introduces vocabulary for discussing decisions, weighing outcomes, and talking about what will probably happen. These words support planning, prediction, and hypothetical commentary throughout Unidad II.

Pronunciation Focus

Pronunciation and Intelligibility

Both the future and the conditional carry stress on the ending rather than on the stem, which is a shift for learners used to present-tense stress patterns.

  • hablaré, hablarás, hablará, hablaremos, hablarán: the written accent on all forms except nosotros marks the stressed syllable; do not shift the stress back onto the stem.
  • hablaría, hablarías, hablaría, hablaríamos, hablarían: every conditional form carries a written accent on the í, and every form is pronounced with four syllables ending in a clear glide, not collapsed into three.
  • Irregular stems such as tendr-, podr-, dir-, har- keep the same stressed ending pattern as the regular forms; only the stem changes.

Grammar: El futuro, el condicional y la probabilidad

Purpose: to talk about plans and predictions, to express probability, and to describe what someone would do under different circumstances.

Formación: el futuro

For regular verbs, the future is formed by adding one set of endings to the full infinitive. The same endings apply to -ar, -er, and -ir verbs.

PronombreTerminaciónhablarvolvervivir
yo-éhablarévolveréviviré
tú-áshablarásvolverásvivirás
usted / él / ella-áhablarávolverávivirá
nosotros/as-emoshablaremosvolveremosviviremos
ustedes / ellos / ellas-ánhablaránvolveránvivirán

A group of high-frequency verbs uses an irregular stem but the same endings:

InfinitivoRaíz irregularFuturo (yo)Condicional (yo)
tenertendr-tendrétendría
poderpodr-podrépodría
hacerhar-haréharía
decirdir-dirédiría
sabersabr-sabrésabría
quererquerr-querréquerría
venirvendr-vendrévendría
salirsaldr-saldrésaldría
ponerpondr-pondrépondría
  • La asociación convocará una votación la próxima semana. The association will call a vote next week.
  • Si aprueban la propuesta, el proyecto tendrá más apoyo que antes. If they approve the proposal, the project will have more support than before.

Formación: el condicional

The conditional uses the same stem as the future — regular infinitive or irregular stem — with a different set of endings, identical for all three verb classes.

PronombreTerminaciónhablarvolvervivir
yo-íahablaríavolveríaviviría
tú-íashablaríasvolveríasvivirías
usted / él / ella-íahablaríavolveríaviviría
nosotros/as-íamoshablaríamosvolveríamosviviríamos
ustedes / ellos / ellas-íanhablaríanvolveríanvivirían
  • Yo votaría a favor de la propuesta, pero quiero escuchar más opiniones primero. I would vote in favor of the proposal, but I want to hear more opinions first.
  • Don Ernesto dijo que él haría las cosas de otra manera esta vez. Don Ernesto said that he would do things differently this time.

Uso: predicción, plan y probabilidad

Use the future for predictions, plans, and promises about what will happen. The future can also express probability or a guess about the present, without any special word for "probably."

  • La votación será el sábado. The vote will be Saturday. (plan/prediction)
  • Serán las nueve; don Ernesto siempre llega temprano. It's probably nine o'clock; don Ernesto always arrives early. (probability about the present)

The conditional expresses what someone would do under different or hypothetical circumstances, softened suggestions, and probability about the past.

  • Con más apoyo, la asociación construiría el parque más rápido. With more support, the association would build the park faster.
  • Serían las nueve cuando llegó don Ernesto a la reunión. It was probably nine o'clock when don Ernesto arrived at the meeting. (probability about the past)
  • ¿Podrías explicar tu propuesta otra vez? Could you explain your proposal again? (polite request)
Language Note: Futuro y condicional no son solo "will" y "would"

English speakers sometimes expect a one-to-one match between "will/would" and the Spanish future and conditional. The probability use has no direct English equivalent word: Serán las nueve does not literally translate as "they will be nine," but as a guess about the current time. Pay attention to context rather than translating word for word.

The association will call the vote on Saturday. What do you think will happen?
RODRIGOProbablemente muchos vecinos votarán a favor, pero algunos todavía se opondrán.Probably many neighbors will vote in favor, but some will still be opposed.
ERNESTOYo apoyaría el proyecto esta vez, pero haría las cosas de otra manera.I would support the project this time, but I would do things differently.
CAMILA¿Qué haría usted diferente, don Ernesto? What would you do differently, don Ernesto?
ERNESTOConsideraría el presupuesto con más cuidado, y buscaríamos más apoyo antes de empezar.I would consider the budget more carefully, and we would look for more support before starting.
RODRIGOCon ese apoyo, el proyecto tendrá más posibilidades de tener éxito. With that support, the project will have a better chance of succeeding.
CAMILA¿A qué hora será la votación exactamente? What time will the vote be exactly?
ERNESTOSerá a las diez, creo. Pero llegará gente antes; siempre llega gente temprano a estas reuniones. It'll probably be at ten, I think. But people will arrive earlier; people always arrive early to these meetings.

Preguntas de comprensión:

  1. ¿Qué convocará la asociación el sábado?

Listening

Ask your instructor, a partner, or a text-to-speech tool to read the following short narrative aloud, twice. As you listen, identify which sentences describe a plan or prediction (future) and which describe a hypothetical action or a guess about the past (conditional).

"La votación será el sábado a las diez. Probablemente muchos vecinos votarán a favor, aunque algunos todavía se opondrán. Don Ernesto dijo que él apoyaría el proyecto esta vez, pero que consideraría el presupuesto con más cuidado. Camila cree que, con ese apoyo, el proyecto tendrá más posibilidades de tener éxito."

Oración¿Futuro o condicional?
La votación será el sábado a las diez.______
Muchos vecinos votarán a favor.______
Él apoyaría el proyecto esta vez.______
El proyecto tendrá más posibilidades de tener éxito.______

Reading

Read the following passage about the neighbors' discussion before the vote.

  3. ¿Qué pasaría si la propuesta no ganaba?
  4. ¿Qué haría diferente don Ernesto esta vez?

Writing Workshop: Predicciones y decisiones hipotéticas

Your writing task is to produce a short paragraph (six to nine sentences) about a decision your community, school, or workplace is facing (real or invented), using both the future and the conditional.

  1. Describe la decisión. Explain briefly what decision needs to be made.
  2. Usa el futuro para predicciones. Write at least two sentences predicting what will probably happen, using the future tense.
  3. Usa el condicional para lo hipotético. Write at least two sentences describing what you or others would do under different circumstances, using the conditional.
  4. Incluye una expresión de probabilidad. Use the future or the conditional at least once to express a guess, rather than a fact.
  5. Conecta las ideas. Use connectors such as si, pero, sin embargo, or por eso to link your sentences.
  6. Revisa. Check your draft against the editing checklist below.

Lista de revisión:

  • I used the future correctly for at least one prediction or plan.
  • I used the conditional correctly for at least one hypothetical action.
  • I used the future or conditional at least once to express probability.
  • I used correct irregular stems where needed (tendr-, podr-, har-, dir-, etc.).
  • My accents, punctuation, and inverted marks are correct.
  • I did not introduce any grammar system beyond this chapter and prior chapters.

Speaking Practice

Práctica controlada

With a partner, take turns reading aloud the Model Dialogue, paying attention to the contrast between the future (predictions) and the conditional (hypothetical actions and polite requests).

Tarea comunicativa: ¿Qué pasará? ¿Qué harías?

With a partner, discuss a decision that affects your school, workplace, or community. Take turns predicting what will probably happen using the future, and describing what you would do differently using the conditional. Your partner should ask at least one follow-up question using ¿Qué harías tú? or ¿Qué crees que pasará?

Alternativa individual

If you are studying independently: record yourself making three predictions about the outcome of the park-project vote and three statements about what you would do differently if you were in charge, then listen back and check your use of the future and conditional.

Culture and Communication

Culture in Context

Neighborhood associations, cooperatives, and community boards in many Spanish-speaking communities often make collective decisions through open meetings and votes, though the specific structure — formal ballots, a show of hands, or informal consensus — varies widely by country, city, and type of organization. Weighing consequences openly before a vote, as don Ernesto does here, is a common way of building trust before a decision is finalized.

Regional Note (Recognition Only)

In some varieties of Spanish, especially in more colloquial speech, the present indicative or the construction ir a + infinitivo is often used instead of the future for near-future plans (van a votar el sábado instead of votarán el sábado). Both are grammatically correct; this course activates the simple future for predictions and probability in this chapter and continues to recognize ir a + infinitivo, introduced in an earlier volume, for informal near-future plans.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Common Mistake

Error: Dropping the written accent on the future — Yo hablare con ellos manana.

Correction: Every future form except nosotros requires a written accent: Yo hablaré con ellos mañana.

Common Mistake

Error: Using the regular stem with an irregular verb — Yo tenerá más tiempo mañana.

Correction: Verbs with an irregular stem use that stem in both the future and the conditional: Yo tendré más tiempo mañana.

Common Mistake

Error: Using the conditional where the future belongs, for a simple prediction — La votación sería el sábado. (when there is no hypothetical or past-probability context)

Correction: Use the future for a straightforward prediction or plan: La votación será el sábado. Reserve the conditional for hypothetical actions, polite requests, or probability about the past.

Looking Ahead

Lo que ya sabes

You can now predict what will probably happen, describe what you or others would do under different circumstances, and use the future and conditional to express probability about the present and the past. The neighbors are now ready to vote, but their differing viewpoints on the project's history and future will need to be heard and understood.

Próximo capítulo: Voces y perspectivas

Chapter 8 continues Unidad II by introducing reported speech and quotation, allowing you to relate what different neighbors said and thought during the debate, and to shift viewpoint clearly within a narrative.
