Proyecto final: Participación B2

Discusión, escritura, escucha, lectura y presentación integradas · Speak and Write Spanish: Independent Communication and Connected Discourse

Chapter Objectives

By the end of this chapter, you will be able to:

  1. Participate in an extended discussion that draws on narration, recommendation, doubt, and hypothetical language developed across Volume III.
  2. Write a cohesive, multi-paragraph text that integrates cause-and-effect, reported speech, and subjunctive structures already active in the course.
  3. Understand an extended listening passage combining narrative, opinion, and argument.
  4. Read and summarize an authentic-style text that presents a position and supporting evidence.
  5. Deliver a short presentation that states a postura, offers evidence, addresses a counterpoint, and responds to questions.
  6. Self-assess overall progress toward B2 communicative independence using the volume's language systems.

This chapter is the final integrated assessment of Volume III. No major new productive grammar, vocabulary domain, or regional pathway is introduced. The chapter recycles and consolidates the systems developed in Chapters 1 through 19, giving learners a single capstone opportunity to demonstrate discussion, writing, listening, reading, and presentation skills together.

Communication Scenario

Camila's presentation about the neighborhood market was so well received that the association has asked her to help organize a small community forum. The forum will bring together several neighbors with different opinions about the barrio's recent changes. Camila must read a message from the association describing the plan, listen to recorded neighbor opinions, write a short position piece of her own, and take part in the forum by presenting her postura and answering questions from others who may disagree.

  1. Before beginning, think back over the topics from this volume: identity and community, news, narration, recommendations, doubt, conditions, and comparison. Which have you found easiest? Which still feel effortful?
  2. As you work through this chapter, notice how each task pulls together systems from more than one earlier chapter rather than introducing anything new.

Core Vocabulary: La participación pública

Purpose: to consolidate, not expand, the vocabulary needed for public discussion, recommendation, and argument developed across Volume III. No new vocabulary domain is introduced in this chapter; the items below are drawn from earlier chapters and organized for integrated review.

Every item in this table has already been productive in an earlier chapter. This chapter's task is fluent, integrated use, not the acquisition of new words.

Grammar Review: Sistemas consolidados del volumen

Purpose: to review, in one place, how the volume's major systems work together in extended discourse. This section introduces no new grammar; it shows how previously active systems combine.

Consolidation: Narrar con matices

Extended narration in this volume combines preterite, imperfect, and pluperfect to distinguish completed events, background description, and events that had already happened before the main story line: Cuando llegamos a la reunión, ya habían empezado a hablar del mercado nuevo. La sala estaba llena y todos parecían interesados.

Consolidation: Recomendar, dudar y opinar

Present subjunctive after recommendation, doubt, and emotion remains active from Chapters 11 and 12 and appears naturally in a forum discussion: Recomiendo que la asociación organice más reuniones así. No creo que todos estén de acuerdo, pero es importante que se escuchen las diferentes posturas.

Consolidation: Condiciones, concesión y propósito

Si clauses, aunque, and purpose clauses such as para que support hypothetical and persuasive language: Si el barrio sigue creciendo así, tendremos que pensar en más espacios públicos. Aunque algunos vecinos prefieren no cambiar nada, propongo esta reunión para que todos puedan expresar su opinión.

Consolidation: Presentar una postura oralmente

The spoken discourse markers, evidence attribution, and counterpoint language from Chapter 19 remain fully active and central to this chapter's speaking task: según, es cierto que... sin embargo..., and question-clarification patterns such as si entiendo bien, usted pregunta si...

Práctica de repaso:

This message is an adapted textbook composition written for this chapter, not an authentic institutional communication.

  1. Identify the sentence that explains why the association decided to organize the forum.
  2. Find one example of the present subjunctive after a recommendation.
  3. Find one example of aunque used to acknowledge a difference of opinion.
  4. Summarize in your own words, in two or three sentences, what the association is asking participants to prepare.
  5. Explain how this message connects to the presentation Camila gave in Chapter 19.

Listening Task

Ask your instructor, a partner, or a text-to-speech tool to read the following three short neighbor opinions aloud. As you listen, note each neighbor's postura and one supporting reason.

VecinoPosturaRazón
Vecino 1: "Yo creo que el mercado ha traído mucho beneficio; antes teníamos que viajar lejos para conseguir ciertos productos."____________
Vecina 2: "A mí me preocupa que hayamos perdido la tranquilidad que teníamos antes; hay mucho más tráfico ahora."____________
Vecino 3: "Entiendo las dos posturas, pero creo que, si organizamos bien los horarios, podemos tener el mercado y mantener la tranquilidad del barrio."____________

Writing Workshop: El proyecto final escrito

Write a short position piece (150 to 200 words) about the neighborhood forum, to be shared with the association before the meeting. Your text should integrate systems developed across the volume rather than introduce new ones.

  1. Presenta tu postura. State your position clearly in the opening paragraph.
  2. Da contexto narrativo. Briefly narrate relevant background using preterite, imperfect, or pluperfect as appropriate.
  3. Ofrece evidencia y una recomendación. Attribute evidence with según or impersonal se, and include at least one recommendation using the subjunctive.
  4. Reconoce un contraargumento. Acknowledge an opposing view using aunque or es cierto que... sin embargo...
  5. Concluye con una condición o un propósito. Close with a si clause or a para que clause that looks toward the forum's outcome.

Lista de revisión:

  • My text states a clear postura in the opening paragraph.
  • I used at least one past-tense contrast (preterite, imperfect, or pluperfect) for background.
  • I attributed evidence without a long direct quotation.
  • I included at least one subjunctive form after recommendation, doubt, or emotion.
  • I acknowledged a counterpoint respectfully.
  • I checked accents, agreement, and register throughout.

Speaking Task

Práctica controlada

With a partner, take turns stating one neighbor's opinion from the Listening Task aloud and responding with a sentence that acknowledges it using es cierto que... sin embargo...

Tarea comunicativa: Foro comunitario

In a small group, hold a short forum. Each participant presents their written position piece aloud in two or three minutes, acknowledges at least one other participant's counterpoint, and answers at least one follow-up question using the clarification patterns from Chapter 19.

Alternativa individual

If you are studying independently: record yourself presenting your written position piece, then record a response to an opposing view using material from the Reading Task or Listening Task. Finally, prepare and answer one question you imagine a neighbor might ask.

Culture and Communication

Culture in Context

Public forums and community meetings that bring together neighbors with different opinions exist in many Spanish-speaking communities, though their structure, level of formality, and expected outcome can vary widely by country, city, and type of institution. Being able to state a postura, acknowledge disagreement respectfully, and respond calmly to questions is a valued communicative skill across many of these settings, not a feature of any single country or region.

Regional Note (Recognition Only)

Expectations about how directly to disagree, how long to speak, and whether to raise a hand or wait for a pause vary across communities and institutions rather than following a single "Spanish-speaking" pattern. This course does not require learners to master every local norm; the goal is to communicate a clear postura and respond to others using the systems developed across this volume.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Common Mistake

Error: Mixing preterite and imperfect inconsistently in narration, for example using imperfect for a single completed event: Ayer llegaba a la reunión tarde.

Correction: Use the preterite for the completed event and reserve the imperfect for background or ongoing states: Ayer llegué a la reunión tarde porque todavía trabajaba cuando empezó.

Common Mistake

Error: Using the indicative after expressions of recommendation or doubt: Recomiendo que la asociación organiza más reuniones.

Correction: Use the subjunctive after these expressions: Recomiendo que la asociación organice más reuniones.

Common Mistake

Error: Presenting only one side of an issue in a forum context, without acknowledging that other neighbors may reasonably disagree.

Correction: Include at least one sentence that recognizes the opposing view before returning to your own postura, as modeled throughout this chapter and Chapter 19.

Answer Key

Grammar Review Practice

  1. Aunque algunos vecinos prefieren no cambiar nada, la mayoría apoya la expansión del mercado.
  2. Es importante que la asociación escuche a todos los vecinos.
  3. Cuando Camila llegó a la reunión, la discusión ya había empezado.

Reading Task — Model Analysis

1. "Por eso, la asociación ha decidido organizar un foro comunitario la próxima semana" explains the reason for the forum.   2. "Se recomienda que los participantes lleguen preparados" contains the present subjunctive after a recommendation.   3. "Aunque no esperamos que todos lleguen a la misma conclusión, sí esperamos que el foro sirva para que cada persona exprese su postura con respeto" contains aunque acknowledging differing opinions.   4. Model answer: The association asks participants to prepare at least one argument and one possible solution, and to confirm their attendance before Friday.   5. Model answer: The message follows directly from Camila's presentation in Chapter 19, since her talk about the neighborhood's changes prompted neighbors to share differing opinions, which led the association to organize this forum.

Listening Task

Model answers: Vecino 1 — postura: the market has been beneficial; razón: it removed the need to travel far for certain products. Vecina 2 — postura: the changes have hurt the neighborhood's calm; razón: increased traffic. Vecino 3 — postura: both the market and the neighborhood's calm can coexist; razón: better organization of hours could satisfy both concerns.

Chapter Review — Parte C (model answer)

Aunque el foro podría generar desacuerdos, creo que vale la pena organizarlo. Si los vecinos participan con respeto, el barrio saldrá beneficiado de la conversación.

Chapter Review — Parte D (model answer)

Model answer: Learners may note that narrating background events with the imperfect and pluperfect feels increasingly natural, while distinguishing the subjunctive after doubt from the subjunctive after recommendation still requires conscious attention. Other honest, specific answers are equally acceptable.

Looking Ahead

Lo que ya sabes

Across Volume III, you have moved from describing identity and community to narrating extended events, making recommendations, expressing doubt, discussing conditions and hypotheticals, and presenting and defending a postura in both writing and speech. This chapter has shown that these systems work together: a single position piece or forum contribution can draw on narration, subjunctive structures, evidence attribution, and respectful disagreement all at once. This integrated control is the core B2 outcome of the volume.

Próximo paso: Volumen IV

Volume IV, Advanced Public, Professional, and Academic Spanish, builds on this foundation to develop advanced discourse, formal writing, specialized reading, complex clauses, advanced subjunctive control, rhetorical style, and intercultural pragmatics, moving learners from B2 toward C1.
