Reuniones y acuerdos
Chapter Objectives
By the end of this chapter, you will be able to:
- Use vocabulary related to meetings, agendas, minutes, recommendations, and commitments.
- Distinguish reciprocal meaning from simple reflexive meaning in verbs such as reunirse, ponerse de acuerdo, and comunicarse.
- Use the conditional to make polite recommendations and suggestions in a meeting context, recycling a system already active from an earlier volume.
- Continue developing por and para from Chapter 3 in the new context of agendas, purposes, and commitments.
- Recognize the standard parts of a set of meeting minutes: attendees, agenda, decisions, and commitments.
- Understand a short spoken recap of a meeting's decisions and commitments.
- Read and interpret a short set of formal meeting minutes.
- Write a short, organized summary of a meeting's agreements and commitments.
This chapter continues the formal register and the por/para patterns introduced in Chapter 3, and applies them to a new communicative task: reporting on a meeting. Reciprocal meaning is newly introduced here; the conditional for polite recommendations recycles a system already active from an earlier volume and is not being introduced for the first time.
Communication Scenario
After Sr. Rivas's office receives the additional receipt from Chapter 3, Daniela's team holds a short meeting with two colleagues to review the status of the project and decide next steps. Daniela must take notes during the meeting, help the group reach agreements, and later write a short summary of the commitments each person made.
- Think of a meeting you have attended, in any language. What information did the group need to record so that everyone remembered what had been decided?
- As you move through this chapter, notice how Spanish meeting language separates what was discussed from what was decided, and how it states who is responsible for each next step.
Core Vocabulary: La reunión y el acta
Purpose: to introduce vocabulary needed to participate in a meeting, record its agenda and decisions, and report on commitments made by its participants.
| Español | Significado | Registro / nota |
|---|---|---|
| la reunión | meeting | Núcleo profesional |
| el acta | minutes (of a meeting) | Núcleo profesional, femenino con "el" por la vocal inicial |
| la agenda / el orden del día | agenda | Núcleo profesional |
| el punto (del día) | agenda item | Núcleo profesional |
| el acuerdo | agreement | Núcleo profesional |
| el compromiso | commitment | Núcleo profesional |
| la recomendación | recommendation | Núcleo profesional |
| el/la asistente | attendee | Núcleo profesional |
| convocar (una reunión) | to call (a meeting) | Núcleo profesional |
| proponer | to propose | Núcleo profesional, recycled stem-changing pattern |
| acordar | to agree (on something) | Núcleo profesional, stem-changing o→ue |
| comprometerse a | to commit oneself to | Núcleo profesional, verbo pronominal |
| reunirse | to meet (with each other) | Núcleo profesional, verbo recíproco |
| ponerse de acuerdo | to reach agreement, to come to terms | Núcleo profesional, verbo recíproco |
| el resumen | summary | Núcleo profesional, recycled from Ch. 2 |
Learners should recognize that el acta is grammatically feminine despite taking the article el in the singular; this reflects the same pattern already introduced for other feminine nouns beginning with a stressed a sound.
Grammar Focus: Verbos recíprocos y el condicional cortés
Purpose: to introduce reciprocal meaning with pronominal verbs used in meetings, and to recycle the conditional for polite recommendations, in the context of agreements and commitments.
Some verbs that use se describe an action that two or more people do to and with each other, not to themselves individually. This is called reciprocal meaning, and it is different from the reflexive meaning you have already used with verbs such as llamarse.
- El equipo se reúne todos los martes. The team meets (with one another) every Tuesday. (reciprocal)
- Los dos departamentos se comunican por correo electrónico. The two departments communicate with each other by email. (reciprocal)
- Finalmente nos pusimos de acuerdo sobre la fecha. We finally reached agreement with one another about the date. (reciprocal)
Contrast this with a true reflexive action, in which a single subject acts on itself: Daniela se prepara antes de la reunión (Daniela prepares herself), where only one person is involved and no exchange between people is described.
The conditional, which you have used in an earlier volume, is a natural and polite way to make a recommendation or a suggestion in a meeting without sounding like a command.
- Yo recomendaría enviar el comprobante antes del viernes. I would recommend sending the receipt before Friday.
- Sería buena idea convocar otra reunión la próxima semana. It would be a good idea to call another meeting next week.
- ¿Podríamos revisar ese punto al final de la reunión? Could we review that item at the end of the meeting?
This use of the conditional is a review and expansion of a system already active from an earlier volume; it is not being explained here as a new grammatical form.
Por and para, introduced in Chapter 3 for requests, continue here in the context of meeting agendas and commitments.
- Nos reunimos para revisar el estado del proyecto. We are meeting to review the status of the project. (purpose)
- Gracias a todos por su participación en esta reunión. Thank you all for your participation in this meeting. (exchange)
- El compromiso queda para la próxima semana. The commitment is set for next week. (deadline)
Práctica de repaso:
- Completa con la forma recíproca correcta: "Los dos coordinadores ___ (comunicarse) todas las semanas."
- Cambia esta oración directa a una recomendación cortés con el condicional: "Envíe el resumen mañana."
- Completa con por o para: "Nos reunimos ___ acordar la fecha final del trámite."
Pronunciation Focus: Entonación de sugerencias
Purpose: to practice the intonation of polite suggestions and recommendations, and to continue the linking practice from Chapter 3 in longer meeting-related sentences.
A polite recommendation such as yo recomendaría enviar el comprobante is typically read with a gentle, level intonation that signals a suggestion rather than an order. A question that proposes an action, such as ¿Podríamos revisar ese punto?, rises toward the end, similar to the formal questions practiced in Chapter 3. Continue linking a final consonant to a following vowel, as in sería_una_buena idea or gracias_a todos, so that longer meeting sentences sound connected rather than clipped.
- Read aloud with a gentle, suggesting tone: Sería buena idea convocar otra reunión la próxima semana.
- Read aloud as a polite question, with rising intonation: ¿Podríamos ponernos de acuerdo sobre la fecha final?
Model Dialogue: Una reunión de seguimiento
Context: Daniela meets with two colleagues, Marcos and la Sra. Iturbe, to review the project's status. Relationship: colleagues on the same team; setting: internal meeting, formal but collegial register.
Notice the reciprocal verbs reunirse, comunicarse, and ponerse de acuerdo, alongside the pronominal commitment verb comprometerse a and the conditional used for polite suggestions.
- Find every reciprocal verb in the dialogue and explain what action it describes between two or more people.
- Identify each use of the conditional and state whether it expresses a recommendation, a suggestion, or a polite question.
- Rewrite Daniela's final turn as a short written summary sentence instead of spoken dialogue.
Reading Task: Un acta de reunión
This set of minutes is an adapted textbook composition written for this chapter, not an authentic institutional document.
- Identify the three items listed on the agenda.
- Find the sentence that describes what the team agreed to do, and state who is responsible.
- Find both commitments recorded in the minutes and state their deadlines.
- Identify the impersonal se formula used to describe what was recommended and what will happen with the next meeting.
- In two or three sentences, explain how these minutes organize information differently from the spoken dialogue earlier in the chapter.
Listening Task
Ask your instructor, a partner, or a text-to-speech tool to read the following three short recaps aloud. As you listen, note who made each commitment and by when.
| Recapitulación | ¿Quién se compromete y para cuándo? |
|---|---|
| "Nos pusimos de acuerdo: yo me comprometo a enviar el formulario para el jueves." | ______ |
| "Marcos recomendó revisar el punto tres, y él se compromete a preparar el resumen para el lunes." | ______ |
| "La Sra. Iturbe se compromete a comunicarse con la otra oficina antes del final de la semana." | ______ |
Writing Workshop: Un resumen de acuerdos
Write a short summary (100 to 150 words) of a meeting's agreements and commitments, real or invented. Use at least one reciprocal verb, one conditional recommendation, and one para phrase for a deadline.
- Indica el propósito de la reunión. State briefly why the group met, using para.
- Describe el acuerdo principal. Use a reciprocal verb such as ponerse de acuerdo or reunirse.
- Incluye una recomendación. Use the conditional to phrase it politely.
- Registra los compromisos. State who commits to what and by when, using comprometerse a.
- Cierra el resumen. Mention the next meeting or next step, if relevant.
Lista de revisión:
- I used at least one reciprocal verb correctly.
- I used the conditional to phrase a recommendation politely.
- I used para correctly to state a deadline or purpose.
- I stated clearly who is responsible for each commitment.
- I maintained a consistent formal register throughout.
- I checked accents and punctuation throughout.
Speaking Task
Práctica controlada
With a partner, take turns saying three sentences aloud, each correctly using a reciprocal verb from this chapter's vocabulary.
Tarea comunicativa: Reunión breve
In groups of two or three, role-play a short meeting in which each person makes at least one polite recommendation with the conditional and states one commitment for a specific deadline.
Alternativa individual
If you are studying independently: record yourself narrating a short imaginary meeting in the third person, describing what the group agreed on and who committed to what, using material from this chapter.
Culture and Communication
In many Spanish-speaking professional settings, meetings commonly close by restating agreements and commitments aloud before the group disperses, so that responsibility is clear to everyone present. This practice supports accountability in offices that meet frequently, and it complements, rather than replaces, a written set of minutes.
The formality of meetings, the level of detail expected in minutes, and the directness with which recommendations are phrased vary by country, institution, and workplace culture. A learner working with a specific organization should observe its own norms rather than assuming that any single textbook example applies universally.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Error: Treating a reciprocal verb as if it described a single person acting alone: Marcos se reúne. (intended to mean "Marcos is meeting with the team")
Correction: Reciprocal meaning requires a plural subject: Marcos y el equipo se reúnen.
Error: Using a direct command instead of the conditional for a recommendation in a meeting: Envíe el resumen mañana., when a softer suggestion is intended.
Correction: Use the conditional to soften the recommendation: Yo recomendaría enviar el resumen mañana.
Error: Using por to state the purpose of a meeting: Nos reunimos por revisar el proyecto.
Correction: Use para to state purpose: Nos reunimos para revisar el proyecto.

Answer Key
Grammar Focus Practice
- Los dos coordinadores se comunican todas las semanas.
- Model answer: ¿Podría enviar el resumen mañana? or Yo recomendaría enviar el resumen mañana.
- Nos reunimos para acordar la fecha final del trámite.
Model Dialogue — Practice
1. "Reunirse," "comunicarse," and "ponerse de acuerdo" are the reciprocal verbs; each describes an action shared between two or more people, such as the whole team meeting together or two offices communicating with each other. 2. "Yo recomendaría continuar..." expresses a recommendation; "¿Podríamos ponernos de acuerdo...?" expresses a polite question proposing an action. 3. Model answer: "El equipo acordó que Daniela se comunicaría con la otra oficina y que Marcos prepararía el resumen para el lunes."
Reading Task — Model Analysis
1. The three agenda items are the status of the authorization, the next steps of the project, and the distribution of responsibilities. 2. The team agreed to continue with the next point of the project this same week; the team as a whole is responsible. 3. Daniela commits to contacting the other office before Friday; Marcos commits to having the summary ready by Monday. 4. "Se recomendó" and "se convocará" are the impersonal se formulas describing the recommendation and the planned next meeting without naming a specific individual. 5. Model answer: The minutes separate attendees, agenda, agreements, and commitments into labeled sections, while the spoken dialogue presents the same information as it naturally unfolds in conversation.
Listening Task
Model answers: Recapitulación 1 — la persona que habla se compromete a enviar el formulario para el jueves. Recapitulación 2 — Marcos se compromete a preparar el resumen para el lunes. Recapitulación 3 — la Sra. Iturbe se compromete a comunicarse con la otra oficina antes del final de la semana.
Chapter Review — Parte D (model answer)
Model answer: Learners may note that recognizing reciprocal verbs while reading feels increasingly natural, while phrasing an original recommendation politely with the conditional in real time during a conversation still requires conscious attention. Other honest, specific answers are equally acceptable.
Looking Ahead
Lo que ya sabes
This chapter has introduced reciprocal meaning with pronominal verbs such as reunirse and ponerse de acuerdo, and has recycled the conditional for polite recommendations in a meeting context. You have continued developing por and para from Chapter 3 and have applied the formal register to a new task — reporting on a meeting's agreements and commitments.
