Proyecto 1: Paquete profesional
Chapter Objectives
By the end of this chapter, you will be able to:
- Combine the formal register, vocabulary, and structures from Chapters 1 through 4 into a single connected professional task.
- Read and interpret a short professional package containing an email, a brief report, and a set of meeting minutes.
- Understand a short spoken recap that reports on a professional exchange and its outcome.
- Write a complete professional package: a formal email, a short report passage, and a written summary of a meeting's agreements.
- Participate in a short simulated meeting that recycles formal requests, recommendations with the conditional, and commitments with comprometerse a.
- Self-assess performance across the systems developed in Unit I without introducing any new productive grammar system.
This chapter is the Unit I integrated assessment. It does not introduce a new grammar system, a new address form, or a new large vocabulary domain. Every task recycles material already active from Chapters 1 through 4: formal address and register, passive/impersonal se, formal requests, por/para, reciprocal verbs, and the conditional for polite recommendations.
Communication Scenario
Daniela's supervisor asks her to prepare a complete professional package documenting the project discussed across the last several weeks: the original request, the report summarizing its status, and the outcome of the team's most recent meeting. The package will be shared with Sr. Rivas's office and with Daniela's own supervisor, so it must maintain a consistent formal register from the first line to the last.
- Think about a time you had to summarize several separate conversations or documents into one organized package for someone else. What made that package easy, or difficult, for the reader to follow?
- As you complete this chapter, notice how each piece of the package — the email, the report, and the minutes — uses a slightly different structure but the same underlying formal register.
Unit Recap: Lo que ya sabes hacer
Purpose: to review, without introducing anything new, the vocabulary and grammar systems from Chapters 1 through 4 that this chapter's tasks require.
No new vocabulary domain, grammar system, or address form is introduced in this chapter. Every item in the table above should already feel familiar from its original chapter.
- Before continuing, write one original sentence using the passive or impersonal se from Chapter 2.
- Write one original sentence using por or para from Chapter 3.
- Write one original sentence using a reciprocal verb or comprometerse a from Chapter 4.
Reading Task: El paquete completo
Read the following three connected documents, which together form the professional package for this chapter's project.
These three documents are adapted textbook compositions written for this chapter, not authentic institutional documents.
- Identify the purpose of the email and the two documents it introduces.
- Find both instances of the passive or impersonal se in the report, and restate each in your own words.
- Find the formal request in the email and identify the verb form used to phrase it politely.
- Find both commitments in the minutes and state who is responsible for each and by when.
- In two or three sentences, explain how the register stays consistent across all three documents even though their formats are different.
Listening Task
Ask your instructor, a partner, or a text-to-speech tool to read the following recap aloud. As you listen, identify the request, the recommendation, and the commitment it describes.
| Recapitulación | Solicitud, recomendación o compromiso |
|---|---|
| "Le agradecería que revisara el informe antes del viernes." | ______ |
| "Yo recomendaría mantener informado al equipo sobre cualquier cambio." | ______ |
| "Daniela se compromete a comunicarse con la otra oficina antes del viernes." | ______ |
Writing Workshop: El paquete profesional
Write your own complete professional package (150 to 200 words total), based on a real or invented project. Your package must include all three parts below and must maintain a consistent formal register throughout.
- Correo formal. Write a short email using usted, introducing the two attached documents and including one polite request.
- Informe breve. Write two or three sentences describing the status of the project, using the passive or impersonal se at least twice.
- Resumen de acuerdos. Write a short summary of a meeting's agreements, using at least one reciprocal verb, one conditional recommendation, and one commitment with comprometerse a.
Lista de revisión:
- I maintained a consistent formal register across all three parts of the package.
- I used the passive or impersonal se correctly in the report.
- I phrased my request politely, using an appropriate verb form.
- I used por or para correctly at least once.
- I used a reciprocal verb and comprometerse a correctly in the summary.
- I checked accents, punctuation, and capitalization throughout.
Speaking Task: Simulacro de reunión
Práctica controlada
With a partner, take turns saying one formal request, one polite recommendation with the conditional, and one commitment with comprometerse a, recycling language from Chapters 3 and 4.
Tarea comunicativa: Reunión de cierre
In groups of two or three, role-play a short closing meeting for the project in this chapter's scenario. One person should present the report's findings, another should make a polite recommendation, and the group should agree on at least one commitment with a specific deadline.
Alternativa individual
If you are studying independently: record yourself presenting the report findings aloud and then stating one recommendation and one commitment, as if reporting to a supervisor.
Culture and Communication
In many Spanish-speaking professional settings, a single package that bundles a cover email, a short report, and meeting minutes is a common way to keep a supervisor or outside office informed without requiring a separate exchange for each document. Maintaining one consistent register across all three parts helps the reader trust that the package comes from a single, organized source.
The expected length, formality, and level of detail for a professional package of this kind vary by country, institution, and workplace culture. A learner working with a specific organization should follow that organization's own conventions rather than assuming this chapter's model applies universally.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Error: Shifting from usted in the email to an informal tú register in the report or the meeting summary within the same package.
Correction: Keep the same formal register across every part of the package, since all three documents are addressed to the same professional audience.
Error: Naming the person responsible for every action in the report, such as Daniela revisó la documentación, when the impersonal or passive se is more appropriate for a report's neutral tone.
Correction: Use the impersonal or passive se for report-style statements: Se revisó la documentación.
Error: Recording a commitment without stating who is responsible or by when, such as Se va a comunicar con la oficina.
Correction: State the responsible person and the deadline clearly: Daniela se compromete a comunicarse con la oficina antes del viernes.

Answer Key
Reading Task — Model Analysis
1. The email introduces a brief report on the project's status and a summary of the most recent meeting's agreements, and it makes a polite request that both be reviewed before Friday. 2. "Se revisó la documentación" and "se determinó que la autorización... fue recibida" are the two instances; a learner might restate them as "alguien revisó los documentos" and "el equipo llegó a la conclusión de que ya tenían autorización," while noting that the report itself avoids naming who performed each action. 3. "Le agradecería mucho que revisara ambos documentos" is the formal request, using the conditional of agradecer together with the subjunctive. 4. Daniela commits to contacting the other office before Friday; Marcos commits to having the summary ready by Monday. 5. Model answer: All three documents use usted-level courtesy markers, avoid casual vocabulary, and state information and responsibilities directly, even though the email is personal in tone, the report is neutral and impersonal, and the minutes are organized into labeled sections.
Listening Task
Model answers: Recapitulación 1 — a formal request. Recapitulación 2 — a polite recommendation with the conditional. Recapitulación 3 — a commitment with comprometerse a.
Chapter Review — Parte D (model answer)
Model answer: Learners may note that writing the report's impersonal se sentences still requires conscious attention, while the closing email and the meeting summary feel more automatic after four chapters of practice. Other honest, specific answers are equally acceptable.
Looking Ahead
Lo que ya sabes
This chapter has not introduced any new grammar system. Instead, it has combined the formal register, the passive and impersonal se, formal requests, por and para, reciprocal verbs, and the conditional for polite recommendations — all active since Chapters 1 through 4 — into a single connected professional task.
