Leer textos complejos
Chapter Objectives
By the end of this chapter, you will be able to:
- Identify the main idea, supporting details, and inferred meaning in a multi-paragraph academic-style text.
- Recognize and interpret academic connectors such as sin embargo, por lo tanto, además, no obstante, and en cuanto a.
- Identify a topic sentence and explain how the sentences that follow it develop, support, or qualify it.
- Use formal subordinating structures to connect ideas in your own analysis of a text.
- Discuss a complex passage aloud, distinguishing what the text states directly from what it implies.
- Write a short paragraph that opens with a clear topic sentence and uses at least two academic connectors.
This chapter opens Unit II. It introduces formal subordination, academic connectors, and topic-sentence analysis as new productive systems, while continuing to develop the formal register, passive/impersonal se, and other systems active since Unit I.
Communication Scenario
Daniela has been asked to prepare a short internal briefing based on an article about changes to remote-work policy at her company's regional office. Before she can summarize it for her team, she needs to read the article carefully: to separate its main argument from its supporting details, and to notice where the writer is stating a fact directly and where the writer is only suggesting a conclusion.
- Think about a time you had to read something dense — a policy document, a news article, an academic text — and pull out only what mattered for a specific purpose. What reading strategies helped you most?
- As you work through this chapter, pay attention to how connecting words like sin embargo or por lo tanto signal a shift, a consequence, or an added point, even before you reach the words that follow them.
Core Vocabulary: Conectores académicos
Purpose: to recognize and begin to use the connectors that organize academic and analytical Spanish, so that longer texts become easier to follow and your own analysis becomes easier to write.
| Conector | Función | Registro / nota |
|---|---|---|
| sin embargo | Introduces a contrast with what came before | Formal and neutral; core production |
| no obstante | Introduces a contrast, more formal than sin embargo | Formal/written; recognition and limited production |
| por lo tanto | Introduces a logical consequence | Formal and neutral; core production |
| además | Adds a supporting point | Formal and neutral; core production |
| en cuanto a | Shifts the topic to a related point | Formal; core production |
| de hecho | Reinforces or specifies a previous claim | Formal and neutral; core production |
| a partir de | Marks a starting point in time or reasoning | Formal; core production |
| en resumen | Signals a summary or conclusion | Formal and neutral; core production |
These connectors are new productive vocabulary in this chapter. Grammar and morphology beyond ordinary connective use remain limited to what earlier chapters have already activated.
Grammar Focus: Subordinación formal y la oración temática
Purpose: to recognize how a topic sentence controls the paragraph that follows it, and to use formal subordinating connectors to link a claim to its support.
Form: A topic sentence typically appears first in an academic paragraph and states the paragraph's main claim in general terms. The sentences that follow narrow, support, qualify, or illustrate that claim, often using a connector such as por ejemplo, además, or sin embargo to signal the relationship.
Meaning: A connector does not simply join two sentences; it tells the reader what kind of relationship to expect — addition, contrast, consequence, or specification.
Use: In formal writing and reading, connectors are one of the clearest signals of a text's structure. Learning to recognize them lets you predict what kind of information is coming next, even before you read the full sentence.
- La política de trabajo remoto ha beneficiado a muchos empleados. Sin embargo, algunos equipos han encontrado dificultades para coordinar horarios. Remote-work policy has benefited many employees. However, some teams have had trouble coordinating schedules.
- La empresa amplió el horario flexible el año pasado. Por lo tanto, varios departamentos han reportado mayor satisfacción laboral. The company expanded flexible hours last year. As a result, several departments have reported greater job satisfaction.
- En cuanto a la comunicación interna, la empresa introdujo una reunión semanal obligatoria. As for internal communication, the company introduced a mandatory weekly meeting.
Do not treat every connector as interchangeable. Sin embargo and no obstante both signal contrast, but no obstante belongs more to formal, written, or institutional registers; sin embargo is the safer default for most tasks in this chapter.
- Underline the topic sentence in each short paragraph your instructor provides, then identify one connector that signals how the following sentence relates to it.
- Combine each pair of simple sentences below using the connector indicated.
- El informe llegó a tiempo. El equipo no tuvo tiempo de revisarlo. (sin embargo)
- Se actualizó el sistema. Los empleados recibieron una capacitación breve. (por lo tanto)
- El artículo describe el nuevo horario. El artículo menciona los criterios de elegibilidad. (además)
Reading: Identificando la idea principal
Read the following adapted article about a company's remote-work policy. As you read, look for the topic sentence in each paragraph and notice how the connectors organize the writer's argument.
This passage is an adapted textbook composition written for this chapter, not an authentic published article.
- Identify the topic sentence of each paragraph.
- Find each of the four connectors from this chapter's vocabulary list in the passage, and explain the relationship each one signals.
- The text does not directly state whether the company considers the policy a success. Based on the final paragraph, what can you infer about the writer's overall view? Support your answer with one phrase from the text.
- Identify one detail in the second paragraph that supports the main idea of the first paragraph.
- In your own words, summarize the passage in two or three sentences using at least one academic connector.
Guided Practice
Complete the following controlled practice before moving to the listening and speaking tasks.
- Choose the connector that best completes each sentence: sin embargo,
además, por lo tanto, or en cuanto a.
- El nuevo horario flexible comenzó en enero. ______, la política de reuniones no ha cambiado.
- ______ la capacitación técnica, la empresa ofrecerá un curso adicional en marzo.
- Los empleados solicitaron más información sobre el proceso. ______, el departamento de recursos humanos publicó una guía detallada.
- Rewrite each simple two-sentence pair as one sentence joined by an appropriate connector, keeping the formal register.
Listening Task
Ask your instructor, a partner, or a text-to-speech tool to read the following short explanation aloud. As you listen, identify the main idea and one supporting detail.
A workplace trainer explains a scheduling change to new employees.
- What is the main idea of the explanation?
- Identify one supporting detail and one contrast introduced by sin embargo.
- Based on the last sentence, what should a new employee do if a problem is urgent?
Speaking Task
Práctica controlada
With a partner, take turns summarizing one paragraph of the reading passage aloud, using at least one academic connector in your summary.
Tarea comunicativa: Discusión guiada
In pairs or small groups, discuss the remote-work policy from the reading passage. One person should state what the text says directly; the other should suggest what the text implies but does not state outright. Use sin embargo, por lo tanto, or de hecho at least once each in the discussion.
Alternativa individual
If you are studying independently: record yourself explaining the main idea and one inference from the reading passage, using at least two academic connectors.
Writing Practice
Write a short paragraph (80 to 100 words) analyzing a short article, policy, or announcement of your choice (real or invented). Your paragraph must:
- Open with a clear topic sentence that states your main point.
- Include at least two academic connectors from this chapter's vocabulary.
- Support your topic sentence with at least one specific detail.
Lista de revisión:
- My paragraph opens with a clear topic sentence.
- I used at least two academic connectors correctly.
- My supporting sentence connects clearly to my topic sentence.
- I maintained a formal, neutral register throughout.
- I checked accents, punctuation, and capitalization.
Culture and Communication
Academic and workplace writing across Spanish-speaking institutions commonly favors clearly signaled logical structure — a stated topic sentence followed by connectors that guide the reader through supporting points, contrasts, and conclusions. Recognizing these signals helps a reader move efficiently through long reports, memos, and articles without needing to reread each paragraph multiple times.
Academic and journalistic writing conventions vary somewhat by country and institution, particularly in how formal or dense the connectors tend to be. A more conversational connector such as pero may appear even in relatively formal spoken commentary in some contexts, while written academic prose tends to favor sin embargo or no obstante.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Error: Using pero in every context where a contrast connector is needed, even in formal academic analysis.
Correction: Reserve sin embargo or no obstante for formal written analysis; pero remains appropriate mainly in more conversational registers.
Error: Treating every stated detail as equally important, rather than identifying which sentence functions as the topic sentence.
Correction: Identify the topic sentence first, then treat following sentences as support, contrast, or specification of that main idea.
Error: Confusing what a text states directly with what a reader can reasonably infer, and presenting an inference as if the text said it outright.
Correction: Support any inference with a specific phrase from the text, and distinguish clearly between direct statement and inference in your own analysis.
Chapter Review
Parte A — Conectores
1. Completa cada oración con el conector más apropiado: sin embargo, por lo tanto, además, o en cuanto a.
- El proyecto avanzó rápidamente en enero. ______, en febrero hubo varios retrasos.
- ______ el presupuesto, todavía no se ha tomado una decisión final.
Parte B — Idea principal y detalle
Practical Performance Task
Tarea práctica — Capítulo 6
Analizar un texto breve
Complete the following integrated task, which brings together this chapter's reading and writing skills:
- Choose a short article, policy, or announcement (100 to 150 words), real or invented.
- Identify its topic sentence and at least two supporting details in writing.
- State one inference the text supports but does not state directly, with textual support.
- Write your own analytical paragraph from the Writing Practice section, using at least two academic connectors.
- Present your analysis aloud to a partner or record it, following the Speaking Task guidance.
| Criterio | Logrado | En desarrollo |
|---|---|---|
Answer Key
Reading Task — Model Analysis
1. Paragraph 1's topic sentence introduces the more flexible remote-work policy; paragraph 2's topic sentence focuses on internal communication; paragraph 3's topic sentence summarizes the overall impact. 2. Sin embargo signals the contrast between employee satisfaction and coordination difficulties; en cuanto a shifts to the topic of internal communication; de hecho reinforces the claim about resolving problems early; por lo tanto introduces the consequence that communication has become more constant. 3. Model answer: the writer appears cautiously positive, since the final paragraph states that the policy "ha traído beneficios claros," while noting that long-term success "dependerá de" further adjustments. 4. Model answer: the detail about the mandatory weekly meeting supports the first paragraph's claim about coordination challenges by showing one way the company addressed them. 5. Model answer: learner summaries will vary; a strong summary states the main benefit, the coordination challenge, and uses a connector such as sin embargo or por lo tanto.
Guided Practice
1. sin embargo; en cuanto a; por lo tanto. 2. Model answers will vary; each combined sentence should preserve the original meaning and use the connector naturally.
Listening Task
Model answers: 1. The main idea is that team meetings changed from daily to three times per week, with a written agenda. 2. A supporting detail is the addition of a written agenda; the contrast introduced by sin embargo is that urgent problems now require another form of communication. 3. A new employee with an urgent problem should use another means of communication rather than waiting for the next scheduled meeting.
Chapter Review — Parte D (model answer)
Model answer: Learners may note that distinguishing inference from direct statement felt the most demanding, since it requires close attention to exactly what the text says rather than what seems likely. Other honest, specific answers are equally acceptable.
Looking Ahead
Lo que ya sabes
This chapter introduced academic connectors, topic-sentence analysis, and formal subordination as new productive systems, while continuing to rely on the formal register, passive/impersonal se, and other systems active since Unit I.
