Media Listening and Summary · Speak and Write Swahili, Volume III: Independent Communication and Connected Discourse

Chapter Overview

Chapter 12 shifts the formal register you built in Chapter 11 into the world of Swahili media: radio news, short interviews, and digital announcements. This chapter introduces one new productive tool — reported speech formulae built with evidential and reporting verbs such as alisema, alieleza, and kulingana na — while it reviews, rather than reteaches, the passive and relative forms you have already met, this time inside news and interview vocabulary. You will listen to short scripted media segments, identify their main ideas and details, and practice restating what a speaker said without quoting them word for word. No task in this chapter requires a noun class, verb extension, or clause type that Chapters 1–11 have not already activated.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this chapter, you will be able to:

  1. Understand the main idea and key details of short scripted media segments.
  2. Report what someone said using evidential and reporting verbs such as alisema, alieleza, alidai, and kulingana na.
  3. Recognize passive and relative forms as they appear in news and interview language.
  4. Use noun-class agreement accurately within news, interview, radio, and digital-media vocabulary.
  5. Take brief notes while listening and use them to produce an oral or written summary.
  6. Write a short summary of a media segment using reported speech.
  7. Answer detail questions about audio content without requiring a full transcript.

Opening Communication Scenario

On the drive to work, Fatuma listens to the morning news on the radio while her colleague Juma reads the same story on his phone. At the office, they compare what they heard and read, checking that they understood the announcer correctly and deciding what to tell a coworker who missed it entirely. Later, a short interview clip about a new training program circulates in the office WhatsApp group, and several colleagues need to summarize it for a supervisor who has not had time to listen.

  1. This chapter introduces reported speech formulae and evidential/reporting verbs as new productive grammar.
  2. Passive and relative forms are reviewed, not retaught, inside news and interview vocabulary.
  3. Tasks combine listening, speaking, reading, and writing around one connected media context.
  4. No task in this chapter requires a noun class, relative-clause type, or verb extension that Chapters 1–11 have not already activated.

Pronunciation and Orthography Focus

Focus — Listening to Faster Scripted Speech

Radio announcers and interview subjects speak faster and more fluently than a classroom dialogue, and words run together more than they do in careful, isolated pronunciation. Practice segmenting connected speech by listening for the stable five-vowel quality of each syllable even when the overall pace increases, and by using penultimate stress as an anchor for locating word boundaries inside a fast phrase.

In writing, news and interview text follows the same standard spelling and punctuation conventions as other formal Swahili, including correct capitalization of titles such as Waziri and Rais, and clear paragraph breaks between reported statements from different speakers.

Grammar and Sentence Patterns

This section introduces reported speech formulae and evidential/reporting verbs as new productive grammar, and reviews the passive and relative forms from earlier chapters inside news, interview, and digital-media vocabulary.

Reported Speech Formulae

New — Reporting What Someone Said

Swahili reports another person's words using a reporting verb followed by kwamba ("that") and a full clause, rather than quotation marks alone. The subject marker on the reporting verb agrees with the speaker being reported.

  • Waziri alisema kwamba mafunzo yataanza wiki ijayo. The minister said that the training will begin next week.
  • Msemaji alieleza kwamba tatizo limetatuliwa. The spokesperson explained that the problem has been resolved.
  • Mtangazaji alidai kwamba idadi ya wafanyakazi imeongezeka. The announcer claimed that the number of employees has increased.

Evidential Phrases: Kulingana na and Kwa mujibu wa

New — Attributing Information to a Source

Kulingana na ("according to") and kwa mujibu wa ("according to, per") introduce a source before a reported statement. Both phrases are followed directly by a noun phrase naming the source, and then by the reported information.

  • Kulingana na taarifa ya hali ya hewa, mvua itanyesha kesho. According to the weather report, it will rain tomorrow.
  • Kwa mujibu wa chanzo kimoja, mkutano umeahirishwa. According to one source, the meeting has been postponed.

Reviewing Passive and Relative Forms in Media Language

Review — Passive and Relative Recognition in News and Interviews

News language frequently uses the passive to keep attention on the event rather than the agent, and relative clauses to add identifying detail about people, places, or events without a separate sentence. You have already met both forms; here you practice recognizing them quickly while listening and reading, since media Swahili uses them at a faster pace and higher density than earlier chapters.

  • Mkutano umeahirishwa hadi Jumamosi. The meeting has been postponed until Saturday. ahirisha → ahirishwa (passive)
  • Msemaji ambaye alizungumza jana amesema tatizo limetatuliwa. The spokesperson who spoke yesterday said the problem has been resolved. ambaye + subject marker (relative)
Building Block — Source Plus Reporting Verb Plus Reported Clause
Kulingana na/Kwa mujibu wa + [source], + [subject marker]+li/ame-sema/eleza/dai + kwamba + [reported clause]

Kulingana na mtangazaji, waziri alisema kwamba mafunzo mapya yatatolewa kwa wafanyakazi wote mwezi ujao. According to the announcer, the minister said that new training will be given to all employees next month.

Notice that the reported clause itself can contain a passive verb (yatatolewa) — reporting a passive statement does not require any new grammar beyond what Chapters 6 and 7 already introduced.

Zoezi la Sarufi — Grammar Practice:

  1. Rewrite five direct statements as reported speech using alisema kwamba or alieleza kwamba.
  2. Write three sentences attributing information to a source using kulingana na or kwa mujibu wa.
  3. Identify the passive or relative form in five sentences drawn from a news or interview context.

Model Dialogue

Muktadha: Fatuma na Juma wanazungumza ofisini asubuhi kuhusu habari walizosikia na kusoma.

(Setting: Fatuma and Juma are talking at the office in the morning about news they heard and read.)

FATUMAUmesikia habari za asubuhi? Mtangazaji alisema kwamba mafunzo mapya yataanza mwezi ujao.Did you hear the morning news? The announcer said that new training will begin next month.
JUMANimesoma habari hiyo hiyo kwenye gazeti. Kwa mujibu wa gazeti, mafunzo yatatolewa kwa wafanyakazi wote.I read that same news in the newspaper. According to the newspaper, the training will be given to all employees.
FATUMAVizuri. Pia nilisikia mahojiano na msemaji wa idara ya mafunzo. Alieleza kwamba fomu zitapatikana mtandaoni wiki ijayo.Good. I also heard an interview with a spokesperson from the training department. She explained that the forms will be available online next week.
JUMAKulingana na chanzo kimoja mtandaoni, idadi ya nafasi imeongezeka mwaka huu.According to one source online, the number of spots has increased this year.
FATUMAHilo ni jambo zuri. Msimamizi wetu ataridhika kusikia hivyo. That's a good thing. Our supervisor will be pleased to hear that.
(Bwana Kileo anaingia na kuuliza kuhusu tukio hilo.)
BWANA KILEONimesikia kuna tukio kuhusu mafunzo mapya. Nieleze kwa ufupi mliyosikia.I heard there's something about new training. Explain briefly what you heard.
FATUMAKwa mujibu wa habari za asubuhi, mafunzo mapya yataanza mwezi ujao, na fomu zitapatikana mtandaoni wiki ijayo.According to the morning news, new training will begin next month, and forms will be available online next week.
BWANA KILEOAsanteni kwa muhtasari huo. Tafadhali nitumieni kiungo cha fomu mara kitakapopatikana.Thank you for that summary. Please send me the form's link once it becomes available.

This dialogue combines reported speech formulae (alisema kwamba, alieleza kwamba), evidential phrases (kwa mujibu wa, kulingana na), and reviewed passives and relatives (yatatolewa, zitapatikana, imeongezeka) inside news and interview vocabulary.

Maswali ya ufahamu — Comprehension questions:

  1. Mtangazaji alisema mafunzo mapya yataanza lini?
  2. Kwa mujibu wa gazeti, mafunzo yatatolewa kwa nani?
  3. Msemaji wa idara ya mafunzo alieleza nini kuhusu fomu?
  4. Bwana Kileo anaomba nini mwishoni mwa mazungumzo?

Guided Practice

Zoezi 1 — Kutoa Taarifa kwa Kutumia Kauli za Kuripoti (Reporting Statements)

Practice: transforming direct statements into reported speech.

  1. Rewrite each direct statement as reported speech using alisema kwamba or alieleza kwamba: "Mkutano umeahirishwa." / "Fomu zitapatikana wiki ijayo." / "Idadi ya nafasi imeongezeka."
  2. Read your rewritten sentences aloud at a natural, slightly faster pace, keeping the vowels stable.

Zoezi 2 — Kutaja Chanzo (Naming the Source)

Practice: attributing information to a source with a partner or independently.

  1. Write three sentences of invented or real news, each introduced with kulingana na or kwa mujibu wa and a different source (gazeti, redio, mtandao, msemaji).
  2. Exchange sentences with a partner and ask a follow-up question about one item, such as "Tukio hilo litatokea lini?"

Zoezi 3 — Kutambua Vipengele vya Habari (Identifying Media Features)

Practice: finding passive and relative forms in news/interview vocabulary.

  1. Underline every passive and relative form in the model dialogue and state what each one identifies or describes.
  2. Write two original sentences about a real or invented news item using a passive form and a relative clause.

Listening Practice

Ask your instructor, a partner, or a text-to-speech tool to read the following passage aloud twice, at a natural, slightly faster pace than earlier chapters.

Kazi A — Kubaini mambo makuu (Main-idea task): Note when the new training program begins, when the application forms will be available, and what happens after employees complete the training.

Kazi B — Maswali ya ufahamu:

  1. Mpango mpya wa mafunzo utaanza lini, kulingana na msemaji?
  2. Fomu za maombi zitapatikana lini?
  3. Nini kitatokea baada ya wafanyakazi kukamilisha mafunzo?

Speaking Practice

Sehemu ya kwanza — Kutoa Muhtasari wa Habari (Summarizing the News)

With a partner, listen to the news passage again and take turns summarizing it aloud in two or three sentences, using at least one reported speech formula and one evidential phrase.

Sehemu ya pili — Kuripoti Mahojiano (Reporting an Interview)

Present a short one-minute report as if summarizing an interview or media segment (real or invented) for a supervisor who missed it, using at least two different reporting verbs.

Mbadala wa kujifunza peke yako — Solo alternative

Record yourself summarizing the listening passage and your one-minute report. Listen back and check your use of reported speech formulae, evidential phrases, and passive/relative recognition.

Reading Practice

Habari Fupi — A Short News Item

Maswali ya ufahamu — Comprehension and interpretation questions:

  1. Kwa nini ofisi za serikali zitafunguliwa kwa saa za ziada?
  2. Ni huduma zipi zitakazopatikana, kulingana na msemaji?
  3. Ni maneno gani katika habari hii yanayoonyesha kwamba taarifa imetolewa na chanzo fulani?
  4. Je, mabadiliko haya yatadumu kwa muda gani?

Writing Workshop

  1. Sikiliza na andika madokezo. Listen to the news passage from this chapter (or a similar short scripted segment) and jot brief notes on the main idea and two or three details.
  2. Panga muhtasari. Plan a short written summary that reports what the speaker said, using at least one reporting verb and one evidential phrase.
  3. Andika rasimu. Write a 80–120-word summary following the model: introduce the source, report the main content, and add one or two supporting details.
  4. Kagua kwa orodha. Check your summary against the checklist below, then produce a clean final version.

Prompt: Write a short summary of a media segment (the listening passage, the reading passage, or one you invent) as if informing a colleague who missed it.

Orodha ya ukaguzi — Editing checklist:

  • The summary names the source using kulingana na or kwa mujibu wa.
  • At least one statement is reported using a reporting verb plus kwamba.
  • At least one passive or relative form is used accurately from reviewed news/interview vocabulary.
  • The summary restates content in the writer's own words rather than repeating the passage verbatim.
  • Noun-class agreement is accurate across media vocabulary; capitalization, spacing, punctuation, and ng' are correct throughout.

Culture and Communication

Culture and Communication — Sharing News in Swahili-Speaking Communities

Radio remains a central source of news and public information in many East African communities, alongside newspapers and, increasingly, social media and messaging platforms. It is common for colleagues, family members, and neighbors to relay news orally to those who missed a broadcast, and reported speech formulae such as alisema kwamba are used constantly in this kind of everyday, informal news-sharing, not only in formal journalism.

Regional Variation Note

The reported speech and evidential structures in this chapter are stable across Tanzanian and Kenyan media Swahili. Individual stations, publications, and platforms may have their own stylistic conventions or commonly used introductory phrases; these station- or platform-specific conventions are treated as receptive, specialist material and are not required for productive use at this stage.

Common Mistakes

Common Mistake — Omitting Kwamba After a Reporting Verb

Error: Alisema mafunzo yataanza wiki ijayo. (no kwamba, sounds like a run-on rather than a reported clause)

Correction: Alisema kwamba mafunzo yataanza wiki ijayo. — the reporting verb and the reported clause are joined explicitly with kwamba, which marks the clause boundary clearly.

Common Mistake — Confusing Kulingana na with a Reporting Verb

Error: Kulingana na alisema mkutano umeahirishwa. (treats kulingana na as if it were a subject-marked verb)

Correction: Kulingana na msemaji, mkutano umeahirishwa. — kulingana na introduces a source noun phrase directly; it does not take a subject marker or stand in place of a reporting verb.

Common Mistake — Copying the Passage Instead of Summarizing

Error: A written summary repeats the listening or reading passage word for word.

Correction: A summary restates the main idea and key details in the writer's own words, using reported speech to attribute the content to its source rather than reproducing the original sentences.

Chapter Summary

This chapter introduced reported speech formulae using evidential and reporting verbs such as alisema kwamba, alieleza kwamba, and alidai kwamba, along with the evidential phrases kulingana na and kwa mujibu wa. It reviewed the passive and relative forms from earlier chapters inside news, interview, radio, and digital-media vocabulary, and it developed listening and note-taking skills for faster scripted speech. Chapter 13 continues Unit 3 by moving into civic and community discussion, building on the reporting and attribution skills developed here.

  • Use a text-to-speech tool to read the listening and reading passages aloud at a natural, slightly faster pace, and practice segmenting the connected speech into words.
  • Record your summary of the news passage and your one-minute oral report, then listen back for accurate reported speech, evidential phrases, and passive/relative recognition.
  • Find a short authentic Swahili news clip or article online and try to summarize its main idea in one or two sentences using a reporting verb, even if some vocabulary is unfamiliar.
  • Ask a Swahili-speaking contact, tutor, or qualified reviewer to check your written summary and recorded speech against the rubric in the Practical Performance Task.

Looking Ahead

Unachojua sasa — What you know now

You can now understand short scripted media segments, report what a speaker said using evidential and reporting verbs, and recognize passive and relative forms accurately within news, interview, and digital-media contexts. This gives you the attribution and summary skills needed for the civic and community discussion ahead.

Sura ya 13 — Civic and Community Discussion

Chapter 13 continues Unit 3 by developing discussion of community needs, services, and civic participation, building complex reason, contrast, and result clauses and consolidating conditionals within civic and community vocabulary.
