Tathmini ya Kati ya Kiasi
Chapter Overview
Chapter 10 introduces no new grammar. It is the mid-volume checkpoint where Zainabu, Fatuma, and Hamisi's volunteer network pauses to prepare a single integrated portfolio for the Ward Office, drawing on everything the team has built since Chapter 1: a formal request, an explanatory note on a civic process, a record of a negotiated meeting, a summary of media coverage, an edited passage that tracks reference across sentences, and a precise spatial guide to a public space. Rather than teaching a new system, this chapter asks you to demonstrate control of the systems already active in the volume — formal correspondence, academic explanation, negotiation language, civic and institutional vocabulary, media analysis and reported speech, advanced clause linking, class-sensitive relative clauses and reference tracking, and locative and spatial description — in one connected set of tasks. You will complete a diagnostic precision audit, an integration listening task, a speaking assessment, a reading assessment, and a capstone-style writing and editing task, all evaluated against the cumulative standards established in Chapters 1 through 9.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this chapter, you will be able to:
- Demonstrate accurate noun-class concord, subject- and object-marker control, and TAM/polarity choice across formal, academic, and civic registers.
- Produce a formal written request or piece of correspondence that meets the register expectations established in Chapter 2.
- Explain a concept or process precisely, using nominalization, abstract nouns, and definition frames from Chapter 3.
- Summarize the outcome of a negotiation or meeting, using polite disagreement, conditionals, and object reference from Chapter 4.
- Interpret civic and public-service information and connect it to formal, institutional vocabulary from Chapter 5.
- Summarize a short piece of reported information using source attribution and passive constructions from Chapter 6.
- Construct and interpret complex sentences using the reason, contrast, purpose, and result connectors from Chapter 7.
- Track participants and concepts across an extended passage using the relative clauses and reference strategies from Chapter 8.
- Describe a location and the movement of people within it using the -ko/-po/-mo, kwenye/katika, and motion/location/source patterns from Chapter 9.
- Edit an integrated text for accuracy across all nine active systems and explain the reasoning behind each correction.
Opening Communication Scenario
The Ward Office coordinator asks Zainabu's team for a single "quarter one" packet documenting the volunteer network's work: the formal request that opened their collaboration, an explanation of the registration procedure, a short record of the negotiation over service hours, a summary of the local media coverage the project received, and the spatial guide to the office. Zainabu tells Hamisi and Fatuma that the coordinator will read the packet as one connected piece of writing, not as five separate documents, so consistent register, accurate reference tracking between sections, and precise class agreement matter more than ever. The team spends the chapter compiling, checking, and orally presenting this packet, treating it as a rehearsal for the larger capstone project still to come.
- This chapter introduces no new grammar; it consolidates and assesses the systems from Chapters 1 through 9.
- Learners see how formal, academic, negotiation, civic, media, and spatial language must cohere within one connected document.
- Learners complete a precision audit, then an integrated listening, speaking, reading, and writing assessment.
- Zainabu's review of the packet models how an editor checks a long, multi-part text for consistency.
Cumulative Vocabulary Review
This chapter recycles vocabulary from Chapters 1 through 9 rather than introducing new domains. The table below groups a representative sample by originating chapter so you can review before the assessment tasks.
| Domain | Sample items | From |
|---|---|---|
| Formal correspondence | ombi, barua rasmi, mkuu wa ofisi, kuomba, kujibu | Ch. 2 |
| Academic explanation | dhana, ufafanuzi, utafiti, kufafanua, kuhusiana na | Ch. 3 |
| Negotiation and meetings | ajenda, makubaliano, kupendekeza, kukubaliana, kutokubaliana kwa heshima | Ch. 4 |
| Civic institutions | huduma za umma, taasisi, ofisi ya mtaa, kushiriki, ilani | Ch. 5 |
| Media and reported speech | habari, mhojiwa, chanzo, ilielezwa kuwa, kulingana na | Ch. 6 |
| Clause linking | kwa sababu, ingawa, ili, hivyo basi, wakati | Ch. 7 |
| Relatives and reference | ambaye, ambayo, aliyekuwa, kiitikio, kuendelea kutaja | Ch. 8 |
| Locatives and spatial reference | eneo, ukumbi, kwenye, katika, kuelekea, kutoka | Ch. 9 |
No item in this table is new. Use it only to refresh your memory before the assessment tasks below.
Pronunciation and Orthography Checkpoint
This chapter does not introduce new sounds or spelling rules. Instead, it checks whether the pronunciation and orthography habits built since Chapter 1 hold steady across a longer, more varied text: stable five-vowel quality and penultimate stress must persist through formal vocabulary and academic terms, not only through familiar everyday words. Digraphs and nasal sequences (ch, sh, ny, ng, ng') and the spelling of kwenye, katika, and ambaye/ambayo as separate words remain the same standard introduced earlier and should be checked carefully during editing.
When reading the assessment passages aloud, keep the same clarity and pacing you used for the Chapter 9 public-information notice; do not let sentence length in this chapter's longer passages push you toward rushed or reduced vowels.
Precision Audit: Chapters 1–9
This chapter introduces no new grammar. This section reviews, in one place, the nine systems that this assessment evaluates, so you can self-check your control of each before attempting the integrated tasks.
Audit Checklist by System
- Formal register (Ch. 2): correct openings, closings, and subjunctive politeness in requests.
- Nominalization and definition (Ch. 3): abstract nouns and relative-clause definitions used accurately.
- Negotiation language (Ch. 4): polite disagreement, conditionals, and object reference used appropriately.
- Civic and passive constructions (Ch. 5): passive and locative forms used correctly in institutional description.
- Reported speech (Ch. 6): source attribution and evidential framing distinguished from the writer's own claims.
- Clause linking (Ch. 7): reason, contrast, purpose, and result connectors chosen for the correct logical relationship.
- Relatives and reference (Ch. 8): class-sensitive relative markers agreeing with their head nouns; reference chains free of ambiguity.
- Locatives (Ch. 9): -ko/-po/-mo forms matching noun class; destination and source distinguished from static location.
- General concord (Ch. 1–9): subject markers, object markers, and adjective/possessive/demonstrative agreement consistent throughout.
Use this list as a personal checklist while completing the Guided Practice and the assessment tasks that follow. No single task tests every item, but the packet as a whole should show control of all nine.
Mfano: Ombi letu la awali lilihusu usajili, jambo ambalo Sura ya 3 ilifafanua kwa undani zaidi. Baada ya mkutano, tulikubaliana kwamba huduma hiyo itafanyika ofisini, kama ilivyoripotiwa na gazeti la mtaa, na huduma hiyo sasa ipo kwenye dirisha la pili la ukumbi wa mapokezi. Example: Our initial request concerned registration, something Chapter 3 explained in more depth. After the meeting, we agreed that the service would take place at the office, as reported by the local newspaper, and that service is now at the second window of the reception hall.
Notice how a single connected passage moves through formal request, explanation, negotiation outcome, reported information, and spatial location without breaking register or losing reference.
Model Dialogue
Muktadha: Zainabu, Fatuma, na Hamisi wanapitia rasimu ya kwanza ya kifurushi cha robo mwaka kabla ya kukiwasilisha kwa Ofisi ya Mtaa.
(Setting: Zainabu, Fatuma, and Hamisi review the first draft of the quarterly packet before submitting it to the Ward Office.)
Notice how Zainabu's feedback references each earlier chapter by name, modeling exactly the kind of self-audit this chapter asks you to perform on your own writing.
Maswali ya ufahamu — Comprehension questions:
- Fatuma anasema tatizo gani kuhusu kifurushi chao cha kwanza?
- Zainabu anapendekeza nini ili kuunganisha sehemu ya maelezo ya dhana na ombi la awali?
- Sehemu ya makubaliano ya mkutano inapaswa kuunganishwa na nini, na kwa kutumia neno gani?
- Fatuma anahitimisha nini kuhusu kile kinachohitajika kwa sura hii?
Guided Practice
Zoezi 1 — Ukaguzi wa Awali (Self-Audit)
- Read the Building Block example paragraph again and identify one feature from each of the nine audit points (formal register, nominalization, negotiation language, passive/civic form, reported speech, clause linking, relative/reference, locative, general concord).
Zoezi 2 — Kuunganisha Sehemu (Connecting Sections)
- Write two sentences: one describing a formal request (Ch. 2 style) and one reporting media coverage of its outcome (Ch. 6 style). Then write a third sentence that connects them using a relative clause or clause-linking connector from Chapter 7 or 8.
Zoezi 3 — Kutafuta Hitilafu (Error Hunt)
- Exchange a short paragraph with a partner (or review your own after a break) and mark any place where a locative form, relative marker, object marker, or register choice does not match its context.
Listening Assessment
Ask your instructor, a partner, or a text-to-speech tool to read the following passage aloud at a natural, deliberate pace, then complete the integration task based on it.
Kazi ya ujumuishaji (Integration task): As you listen, identify one sentence from each of the following categories: (a) a reference back to an earlier chapter's content using a relative clause, (b) a reported-speech or source-attributed statement, (c) a locative description using -po or -mo.
Maswali ya ufahamu — Comprehension questions:
- Timu ilikumbushana kuhusu jambo gani mwanzoni mwa mkutano?
- Kwa nini afisa alisema baadhi ya mabadiliko hayawezi kufanyika mara moja?
- Ni chanzo gani kilichotajwa kuhusu sifa alizopokea mradi huu?
- Dirisha jipya la huduma lipo wapi, na kabati la fomu limo wapi?
Speaking Assessment
Sehemu ya kwanza — Wasilisho la Kifurushi (Packet Presentation)
Present a two- to three-minute spoken summary of an imagined (or your own) quarterly packet: state the original request, explain one concept related to it, summarize a negotiated outcome, mention one piece of reported media coverage, and describe where the relevant service is located.
Sehemu ya pili — Maswali na Majibu (Q&A)
With a partner, or your instructor, answer two or three follow-up questions about your presentation that require you to use a relative clause, a conditional, or a locative form in your answer.
Mbadala wa kujifunza peke yako — Solo alternative
Record your packet presentation, then listen back and check it against the nine-point Precision Audit checklist, noting at least one strength and one area to revise.
Reading Assessment
Note: this packet excerpt is an adapted textbook model written for language assessment practice, not an authentic published document.
Writing Assessment
- Chagua muktadha wako. In English, choose a realistic civic or professional situation (real or invented) that could plausibly generate a request, an explanation, a negotiated outcome, a piece of reported coverage, and a location to describe.
- Andika sehemu tano fupi. Write five short connected passages (two to three sentences each): a formal request, a concept explanation, a negotiation summary, a reported-information summary, and a spatial description.
- Unganisha sehemu. Add at least two connecting sentences that use a relative clause or clause-linking connector to tie one section explicitly to an earlier one.
- Kagua kwa orodha ya ukaguzi. Check your full packet against the nine-point Precision Audit checklist from this chapter.
- Hariri. Revise for noun-class concord, object-marker accuracy, register consistency, and locative precision.
Prompt: Write a connected five-part packet (140–200 words total) integrating a formal request, a concept explanation, a negotiation summary, reported information, and a spatial description, following the model in the Reading Assessment passage.
Orodha ya ukaguzi — Editing checklist:
- All five sections are present and clearly connected, not five isolated paragraphs.
- At least two sentences use a relative clause or clause-linking connector to tie sections together.
- Reported information is clearly attributed to a source and distinguished from the writer's own claims.
- Locative forms (-ko/-po/-mo) match the noun class of the place described.
- Formal register is maintained consistently throughout, without unscheduled colloquial shifts.
- Noun-class concord, subject/object markers, and TAM forms are accurate throughout.
Culture and Communication
Volunteer groups, civic organizations, and community associations across the Swahili-speaking world commonly prepare periodic reports for the institutions and residents they serve, and readers of such reports often expect a coherent narrative rather than a set of disconnected updates. Learning to connect formal, academic, negotiation, and descriptive language into one coherent civic document is a practical professional skill, not merely an exercise in combining unrelated grammar points.
Formal reporting conventions, including preferred openings, use of source attribution, and the balance between formal and everyday vocabulary, may vary somewhat between Tanzanian and Kenyan institutional writing, as well as across other Swahili-speaking regions and organizations. This chapter's model remains within the stable Standard Swahili productive baseline established across the volume; broader comparative variation is developed further in Chapter 14.
Common Mistakes
Error: writing five separate paragraphs, one per chapter's system, with no sentence that explicitly links one section to another
Correction: add at least one relative clause or clause-linking connector between sections, as modeled in the Model Dialogue and the Building Block example, so the packet reads as one connected text.
Error: using formal register in the request section but slipping into a more colloquial style in the spatial-description or negotiation-summary section
Correction: maintain the formal, institutional register established in Chapter 2 throughout the whole packet, checking each section against the Precision Audit checklist during editing.
Error: stating information from a news report or another speaker as though it were the writer's own direct assertion, without attribution such as "kulingana na" or "ilielezwa kuwa"
Correction: keep reported information clearly attributed to its source, as practiced in Chapter 6 and reviewed in the Reading Assessment passage of this chapter.
Chapter Summary
This chapter introduced no new grammar. It brought together the formal correspondence, academic explanation, negotiation language, civic and institutional vocabulary, media analysis and reported speech, advanced clause linking, relative clauses and reference tracking, and locative and spatial description developed across Chapters 1 through 9, asking you to demonstrate control of all nine systems within one connected, multi-part text. Zainabu, Fatuma, and Hamisi's quarterly packet modeled how these systems combine in a realistic civic task, and their editing conversation modeled the kind of self-audit this chapter asked you to perform. You completed an integrated listening task, a speaking presentation with follow-up questions, a reading comprehension and analysis task, and a five-part writing assessment with a full editing checklist. Chapter 11 moves into Unit 3, adding law, policy, and responsible civic language as the volume's next major layer.
Chapter Review
Sehemu A — Ukaguzi wa Sarufi (Grammar Audit)
1. Choose any two sentences from your Writing Assessment packet and identify which of the nine Precision Audit systems each one demonstrates.
2. Find one sentence in the Reading Assessment passage that uses a relative clause to connect back to earlier content, and explain how the class agreement works.
Sehemu B — Usomaji na Usikilizaji (Reading and Listening)
1. Summarize in one or two English sentences how the Listening Assessment passage moves from formal reporting to spatial description.
2. Identify one reported-speech or source-attributed sentence in the Reading Assessment passage.
Sehemu C — Uandishi na Kuzungumza (Writing and Speaking)
1. Complete or finalize your Writing Assessment packet, if you have not already done so.
2. With a partner, or alone using the solo alternative, complete the Speaking Assessment tasks.

Answer Key / Ufunguo wa Majibu
Model Dialogue Comprehension
Guided Practice — Zoezi 1, 2, and 3
Accept any correctly identified example of each of the nine audit points in Zoezi 1; any correctly formed pair of sentences plus a connecting relative or connector in Zoezi 2; and any accurately marked correction in Zoezi 3, provided the learner can explain why the flagged form was wrong.
Listening Assessment Responses
Reading Assessment Comprehension and Analysis
Chapter Review — Sehemu A
Answers will vary depending on the learner's own Writing Assessment packet. Accept any response that correctly names a relevant system (formal register, nominalization, negotiation language, passive/civic form, reported speech, clause linking, relative/reference, locative, or general concord) and explains the agreement or usage accurately.
Other accurate, well-formed answers are acceptable where the task is open-ended.
Independent Study Tools
If you are studying without a partner or instructor, use these strategies to complete this chapter's work:
- Before drafting your Writing Assessment packet, briefly reread the Grammar and Sentence Patterns sections of Chapters 2 through 9 in English summary form, then draft each of the five short sections one at a time.
- Read the Listening Assessment passage aloud slowly at least twice, once for overall meaning and once specifically to check each locative and reported-speech form.
- Use the nine-point Precision Audit checklist as a literal checklist: go sentence by sentence through your own writing and mark which system each sentence demonstrates.
- Ask a Swahili-speaking contact, tutor, or qualified reviewer to check your packet and presentation against the rubric in the Practical Performance Task.
- Before moving to Chapter 11, confirm that you can comfortably explain, in your own words, what each of the nine audited systems does and when to use it.
Looking Ahead
Unachojua sasa — What you know now
