Job Overview

This project qualifies you to establish the exact ground layout of the 8-foot by 10-foot garden storage shed floor platform built in Project 08. The finished work product is a squared, leveled, and fully dimensioned string-line footprint with batter boards set outside the excavation and work zones, plus the three skid-support centerlines and their gravel-strip limits marked on the ground.

You will establish a benchmark, install batter boards, run and tension string lines to the specified 8-foot by 10-foot rectangle, square the footprint using a 6-8-10 triangle and equal-diagonal check, mark the three skid centerlines and their 12-inch-wide gravel strips, and record every measurement on the layout worksheet.

This is the sixth project in the book. It uses the squares, levels, reference-line, and verification methods from Project 02, the accurate measuring and marking system from Project 03, and the sawhorses built in Project 05 to support materials during layout. The completed, approved layout becomes the controlling field reference for the material takeoff in Project 07 and the capstone construction in Project 08.

Skills You Will Demonstrate

  • CF-031 — Establish the capstone baseline, benchmark, orientation, and controlled corner reference.
  • CF-032 — Install batter boards outside the work footprint and set their reference elevation.
  • CF-033 — Run, tension, and adjust string lines to the specified 8-foot by 10-foot dimensions.
  • CF-034 — Square the footprint using a 6-8-10 right-angle check and equal-diagonal verification.
  • CF-035 — Lay out the three skid-support centerlines and associated gravel-strip limits.
  • CF-036 — Record side lengths, diagonals, elevations, offsets, and final layout approval.

Where This Skill Fits

Project 02 qualified you to establish reference faces, edges, and benchmarks and to verify level, plumb, and square with hand tools. This project moves that same verification discipline from a tabletop layout board to a full-scale outdoor footprint, using string lines, batter boards, and a 6-8-10 triangle instead of a framing square.

The footprint you establish here is not a demonstration. It is the exact controlling layout used to build the Project 08 capstone. Project 07 will use the recorded skid-line locations and platform dimensions to calculate materials, and Project 08 will excavate, place aggregate, and build the frame directly on the lines and marks you establish in this project.

Scope and Intended Use

This project covers:

  • confirming site permission, boundaries, setbacks, utility-locate requirements, and drainage direction before driving any stake
  • establishing a benchmark, baseline, and controlled corner reference for the 8-foot by 10-foot footprint
  • installing batter boards outside the footprint and work zones and setting their reference elevation
  • running, tensioning, and squaring string lines to the finished platform dimensions
  • laying out the three skid-support centerlines and their 12-inch-wide gravel-strip limits
  • recording every measured dimension, diagonal, elevation, and offset, and obtaining layout approval before Project 08 site work begins

This project does not authorize the learner to:

  • begin excavation, grading, utility disturbance, foundation work, or permanent construction
  • proceed without confirming site permission, property boundaries, setbacks, easements, utility-locate requirements, drainage direction, and access restrictions
  • relocate, resize, or reorient the footprint without correcting the controlling layout record first
  • treat an unequal-diagonal or out-of-tolerance layout as acceptable

Any measurement, string-line intersection, or benchmark that fails inspection must be corrected before the layout is approved for Project 08.

Reference Conventions

Establish these references before any stake is driven, and do not change them mid-project.

TermDefinition
BaselineThe selected 10-foot side of the footprint from which the perpendicular 8-foot side and all subsequent layout are established
BenchmarkThe single labeled elevation reference point, established once and left undisturbed throughout Projects 06 and 08, against which every batter-board elevation is checked
Batter boardA horizontal rail fastened across two stakes outside the footprint corner, used to hold string lines at a fixed, re-locatable reference elevation and position
Work-zone offsetThe 18-inch clearance maintained outside the finished platform lines, kept free of batter boards and stored material
Skid centerlineOne of the three lines, at 12, 60, and 108 inches from the selected 10-foot end baseline, marking the center of each skid-support gravel strip
6-8-10 triangleThe right-triangle check used to verify a 90-degree corner: with one leg measured 6 feet, an adjoining leg measured 8 feet, the diagonal between those two points must measure exactly 10 feet

Reference and Build Record

Before installing any stake, record the following directly on the layout worksheet:

Site permission confirmed: ______ (Y/N)     Utility locate confirmed: ______ (Y/N)     Setbacks and easements confirmed: ______ (Y/N)

Date started: ____________     Builder name: ____________

Prerequisites

Common Field Fundamentals

A building footprint is only as reliable as its weakest measurement. Every dimension in this project is taken from the same benchmark and baseline, every corner is checked with both the 6-8-10 method and the equal-diagonal method, and every skid centerline is measured from the same 10-foot end baseline. Losing the benchmark, skipping a diagonal check, or measuring a skid line from an inconsistent reference produces a footprint that must be torn down and relaid before Project 08 can begin.

Stage 1Confirm site conditions and establish the benchmark and baseline
Stage 2Install batter boards and set their reference elevation
Stage 3Run, tension, and square the four string lines
Stage 4Mark skid centerlines, gravel strips, and the work-zone offset; record and approve

E. Preconstruction Verification

  1. Confirm site permission, property boundaries, setbacks, easements, utility-locate requirements, drainage direction, and access restrictions before driving stakes. Record each confirmation on the layout worksheet.
  2. Reject the location until every required confirmation is complete. Stop work if the proposed footprint conflicts with utilities, access, drainage, or local restrictions.
  3. Select the 10-foot baseline and identify its relationship to the site, access route, and drainage direction. Confirm the baseline orientation matches the site sketch before marking it.
  4. Establish and label one benchmark that will remain undisturbed throughout Projects 06 and 08. Choose a fixed, protected point unlikely to be disturbed by later excavation or material staging.
  5. Mark the approximate four platform corners. Use temporary stakes or flags at this stage; these are not the final corner points.

F. Batter Boards and Reference Elevation

  1. Install two batter-board stakes at least 24 inches outside each corner and outside the future excavation and work zones. Drive each stake pair so the connecting rail can be fastened square to the corner it protects.
  2. Fasten the batter-board rails and set their top edges to a common reference elevation. Use the line level to transfer the elevation from the benchmark to each batter-board pair.
  3. Run and tension the first 10-foot baseline string. Attach the string to the batter boards at the two corners defining the selected baseline and pull it taut.
  4. Establish a perpendicular line at the first corner using a 6-8-10 triangle. Measure 6 feet along the baseline and 8 feet along the proposed perpendicular side; adjust the perpendicular string until the diagonal between those two points measures exactly 10 feet.

G. String Lines and Squaring

  1. Run the first 8-foot side string. Attach it to the batter boards at the corner established by the 6-8-10 check and pull it taut.
  2. Run the opposite 10-foot and 8-foot strings to form the rectangle. Attach all four strings to their batter boards so the four sides form a closed rectangle.
  3. Use a plumb bob or controlled intersection method to identify the exact four corners. Mark each corner point on the ground directly beneath its string intersection.
  4. Measure both diagonals and adjust the string intersections until they are equal within 1/8 inch. Use both tape measures at once to compare the two diagonals directly.
  5. Recheck both 10-foot sides and both 8-foot sides after every diagonal adjustment. Confirm no side has shifted outside its ±1/8 inch tolerance.
  6. Compare the measured diagonal to the approximate theoretical diagonal as an error check. A large deviation from 12 ft. 9 11/16 in. indicates a side-length or squaring error that must be corrected before continuing.
  7. Verify the string elevations against the benchmark and document any intended grade or slope requirement. Record the elevation at each corner on the layout worksheet.

H. Skid Centerlines and Gravel Strips

  1. Measure from the selected 10-foot end baseline and mark skid centerlines at 12, 60, and 108 inches. Use the same reference end for all three measurements.
  2. Extend each skid centerline across the full 8-foot width. Mark each centerline at both the near and far side strings.
  3. Mark a 6-inch offset on each side of every skid centerline to establish the three 12-inch-wide gravel strips. Confirm each strip is centered on its skid line before marking.
  4. Mark the 18-inch work-zone offset outside the completed platform rectangle. Use this mark to keep stored material and equipment clear of the footprint.
  5. Confirm that the batter boards remain outside all excavation, support-strip, and work-zone limits. Adjust or re-stake any batter board that intrudes on these limits.

I. Recording and Approval

  1. Record final side lengths, diagonal lengths, benchmark elevation, skid-line locations, strip widths, and work-zone offsets. Enter every value on the layout worksheet.
  2. Photograph or diagram the completed layout from at least two directions. Include the benchmark, all four corners, and the skid centerlines in the documentation.
  3. Protect the layout for Project 08 or remove it according to the site-control plan. If the layout will remain in place, flag or otherwise protect the strings and stakes from disturbance.
  4. Complete and sign or otherwise approve the layout worksheet before Project 08 site work begins. Do not begin excavation or construction on an unapproved layout.

Common Installation Inspection

Inspect the entire footprint using the same checks regardless of the order in which the corners were squared.

Complete the Layout Worksheet in the Inspection Checklist section below before releasing the footprint for Project 08 site work.

Skill Check

  1. Why must site permission, utility-locate requirements, and setbacks be confirmed before any stake is driven?
  2. What is the purpose of the benchmark, and why must it remain undisturbed through both Project 06 and Project 08?
  3. How does the 6-8-10 triangle method verify a 90-degree corner, and at what point in the sequence is it used?
  4. What is the required tolerance between the two diagonals of the finished footprint, and why is the theoretical diagonal value used only as an error check rather than a pass/fail standard on its own?
  5. Why must all three skid centerlines be measured from the same reference end of the baseline?
  6. What must be verified about batter-board placement before string lines are run, and what is the minimum required setback?
  7. What corrective sequence should be followed if the two diagonals do not match after the four string lines are run?
  8. Why does this project prohibit beginning excavation or construction on an unapproved layout?
  9. What information must be recorded on the layout worksheet before Project 08 site work begins?
  10. What is the required width of each gravel strip, and how is it positioned relative to its skid centerline?

Performance Check

With the footprint fully staked, strung, and marked, review the finished layout against the Acceptance Standards table and confirm both 10-foot sides and both 8-foot sides are within ±1/8 inch of their targets, both diagonals are equal within 1/8 inch, the benchmark and baseline are clearly labeled and undisturbed, all string lines remain tight with stable intersections, every batter board remains outside the 24-inch setback and outside the work and excavation limits, all three skid centerlines fall at 12, 60, and 108 inches within ±1/8 inch, and the gravel-strip limits are marked 6 inches from each centerline. Complete the Layout Worksheet and correct any failed item before approving the footprint for Project 08. If a check fails, identify whether the error occurred in benchmark transfer, batter-board placement, string tensioning, squaring, or skid-line measurement before correcting and re-running the affected check.

Project Closeout

You have completed the sixth project in the construction fundamentals sequence: the field layout of the capstone footprint. This project required you to establish the capstone baseline, benchmark, orientation, and controlled corner reference (CF-031), install batter boards outside the work footprint and set their reference elevation (CF-032), run, tension, and adjust string lines to the specified 8-foot by 10-foot dimensions (CF-033), square the footprint using a 6-8-10 right-angle check and equal-diagonal verification (CF-034), lay out the three skid-support centerlines and associated gravel-strip limits (CF-035), and record side lengths, diagonals, elevations, offsets, and final layout approval (CF-036).

You now have an approved, fully dimensioned footprint layout and a repeatable method for transferring squared, leveled reference lines from a plan onto the ground. That layout carries directly into the next project: calculating the complete material takeoff, purchase list, cut plan, and hardware schedule for the capstone, using the exact dimensions and skid-line locations you established here.

Protect the approved layout, or record it completely and remove it according to the site-control plan. You will use this exact footprint, its benchmark, and its skid centerlines to build the Project 08 capstone.
