Job Overview

This project qualifies you to receive, place, consolidate, strike off, finish, protect, and begin curing residential strip-footing concrete. The finished work product is a placed, consolidated, correctly elevated, finished, and protected strip footing with curing initiated at the correct time, supported by delivery tickets, field-test records, and a completed Footing Placement and Curing Record.

You will stage the crew, tools, testing equipment, and curing materials before the truck arrives; verify the delivered concrete against the specified mixture; sample and test the concrete; place it into the forms built in Project 02 around the reinforcement and embedded hardware installed in Projects 03 and 05; consolidate it without disturbing that reinforcement or hardware; strike off and finish the footing top to the condition required for the next stage of work; and begin the specified curing and protection procedure before leaving the site.

This project assumes Projects 02, 03, and 05 have delivered inspected, released footing forms with reinforcement and any footing-stage embedded hardware in place. No concrete may be placed until those inspections are complete and documented.

Skills You Will Demonstrate

  • FN-019 — Prepare for concrete delivery, including crew staging, communication, and pre-discharge verification.
  • FN-020 — Place concrete into the footing forms without segregation or reinforcement displacement.
  • FN-021 — Consolidate concrete using the approved method around reinforcement, corners, steps, and embedded items.
  • FN-022 — Screed footing tops to the required elevation and profile.
  • FN-023 — Finish footing surfaces to the condition required for the next construction stage.
  • FN-024 — Protect fresh concrete and begin the specified curing procedure at the correct time.

Where This Skill Fits

Project 01 verified the controlling layout and elevations. Project 02 built the footing forms. Project 03 installed the footing reinforcement, and Project 05 places any footing-stage anchor bolts or embedded hardware designated for this placement. This project is the point at which all of that preparatory work becomes a permanent concrete element. Every stem-wall form in Project 06 bears on the footing placed here, and every dowel or construction-joint detail installed here controls how the stem wall bonds to the footing.

The placement, consolidation, and finishing discipline taught here — controlled deposit, approved consolidation around embedded items, and finishing only to the condition the next stage requires — is the same discipline used again for stem-wall concrete in Project 07 and for the continuous slab placement in Projects 16 and 17.

Scope and Intended Use

This project covers:

  • staging placing, consolidation, screeding, finishing, testing, cleanup, curing, lighting, and emergency equipment before discharge begins
  • verifying delivered concrete against the specified mixture and conducting required field sampling and testing
  • placing, consolidating, striking off, and finishing footing concrete to the elevation and surface condition required for the next stage
  • rechecking dowels and embedded items before the concrete loses workability
  • beginning the specified curing and weather-protection procedure and documenting the placement

This project does not authorize the learner to:

  • alter the specified concrete mixture, add unauthorized water, or accept a delivery that does not match the specified mixture without supplier or engineer resolution
  • relocate, cut, bend, or field-modify reinforcement or embedded hardware to accommodate the placement
  • place concrete before form, reinforcement, and embedded-hardware inspections required by Projects 02, 03, and 05 are complete
  • determine curing duration, strength requirements, or early-loading limits independently of the concrete specification and Project 09 curing plan

Any bulging, leaking, movement, blockage, segregation, or equipment failure identified during placement is a stop-work condition requiring correction before placement continues.

Reference Conventions

Establish these references before concrete discharge begins, and do not change them during placement.

TermDefinition
Footing top elevationThe elevation verified in Project 01 and marked on the forms in Project 02, to which the footing is struck off in this project
Workable frontThe leading edge of freshly placed, still-workable concrete maintained continuously during placement so that fresh concrete is always deposited against fresh concrete
ConsolidationThe process of eliminating entrapped air and voids from placed concrete using the approved vibration method, without displacing reinforcement or forms
Strike-offRemoving excess concrete to bring the footing top to the required elevation and profile using a straightedge screed
Curing start timeThe time at which the specified curing and weather-protection procedure begins, recorded on the Footing Placement and Curing Record
Construction jointThe approved detail used to end and later resume a placement if it is interrupted

Placement and Testing Record

Before discharge begins, record the following directly on the Footing Placement and Curing Record:

Site name/address: ______     Specified mixture designation: ______     Planned placement volume: ______     Delivery method: ______

Date: ____________     Placing crew lead: ____________     Testing personnel: ____________

Common Field Fundamentals

Every concrete placement in this book, from this footing pour through the stem-wall placement in Project 07 and the slab placement in Projects 16 and 17, follows the same sequence: verify readiness and stage resources, verify the delivered mixture, sample and test, place and consolidate without disturbing embedded items, strike off and finish to the required condition, and begin curing at the correct time. Learning that sequence at the footing stage, where the placement is simplest, prepares you for the more complex wall and slab placements later in this book.

Pre-dischargeReadiness verification, staging, and communication before the truck arrives
PlacementControlled deposit and consolidation maintaining a continuous workable front
FinishingStrike-off and surface finish to the condition required for the next stage
ProtectionCuring start, barricading, and weather protection before leaving the site

Continuous Workable Front and Embedded-Item Protection

Maintain a continuous workable front throughout the placement so that fresh concrete is always deposited against fresh, still-workable concrete rather than against concrete that has begun to stiffen. Every dowel, anchor bolt, and embedded item placed in Projects 03 and 05 must be rechecked before the surrounding concrete loses workability; an item that has shifted cannot be corrected once the concrete has stiffened around it.

E. Preparation — Readiness Review

  1. Review the approved concrete mixture, placement volume, delivery method, access route, weather plan, crew assignments, testing requirements, joint locations, and contingency plan. Confirm the reviewed document set matches the current site conditions before proceeding.
  2. Verify that excavation, forms, reinforcement, dowels, sleeves, blockouts, and inspection approvals are complete. Confirm the Project 02, 03, and 05 inspection records are signed and available on site.
  3. Confirm that forms are clean, braced, dimensionally correct, and capable of resisting the planned placement method. Walk the full form length and recheck bracing before staging equipment.

F. Staging and Communication

  1. Protect adjacent property, utilities, access routes, and finished work from concrete splatter and equipment damage. Install protective covering and barriers before the truck arrives.
  2. Stage placing, consolidation, screeding, testing, cleanup, curing, lighting, and emergency equipment. Confirm every tool listed in the Common Tools and Equipment table is on site and operable.
  3. Establish communication signals among the driver, pump operator, equipment operator, placing crew, and spotters. Confirm every crew member understands the stop-work hand or radio signal before discharge begins.
  4. Reconfirm footing elevations and visible placement references. Recheck the form-top marks established in Project 02 against the Project 01 benchmark.

G. Delivery Verification and Testing

  1. Inspect delivered concrete documentation before discharge and resolve any mismatch with the specified mixture. Compare the delivery ticket to the approved mixture designation before allowing discharge to begin.
  2. Conduct required field sampling and testing using the approved testing personnel and procedures. Record slump, air content, and cast the required number of cylinders before or during the start of discharge.

H. Placement and Consolidation

  1. Begin placement at the planned location and maintain a continuous workable front. Do not allow a section of placed concrete to sit unconsolidated while a distant section is placed.
  2. Deposit concrete close to its final position without excessive free fall, segregation, or displacement of reinforcement. Direct the chute, pump line, or buggy discharge as close to the form as the equipment allows.
  3. Control the placement rate so forms, stakes, and braces remain stable. Reduce the discharge rate if the assigned form-watch crew member reports bulging, leaning, or stake movement.
  4. Consolidate concrete using the approved method, especially around reinforcement, corners, steps, and embedded items. Insert the vibrator vertically at the specified spacing and withdraw slowly.
  5. Avoid over-vibration, contact that moves reinforcement, or vibration against unsupported formwork. Do not use the vibrator to move concrete horizontally along the form.

I. Monitoring and Stop-Work Response

  1. Monitor forms, footing width, reinforcement position, dowels, sleeves, and concrete level throughout placement. Assign a dedicated crew member to this monitoring task for the full duration of discharge.
  2. Stop placement and correct bulging, leaking, movement, blockage, segregation, or equipment failure before continuing. Do not resume discharge until the identified condition is corrected and confirmed safe.

J. Strike-Off and Finishing

  1. Strike off the footing top to the required elevation and profile. Draw the straightedge screed along the form tops established in Project 02.
  2. Finish top surfaces only to the condition required for the next construction stage. Do not apply a smooth trowel finish where the next stage requires a roughened bonding surface, or the reverse.
  3. Recheck dowels and embedded items before the concrete loses workability. Verify projection, spacing, and plumb against the Project 03 and Project 05 records while adjustment remains possible.
  4. Install or finish approved construction-joint details if the planned placement is interrupted. Use only the joint detail specified in the approved plan.

K. Protection, Curing, and Closeout

  1. Begin the specified curing and weather-protection procedure immediately after the surface condition permits. Apply curing compound or place wet coverings per the Project 09 curing plan.
  2. Barricade the area and prevent vibration, impact, contamination, freezing, rapid moisture loss, and early loading. Post barricades and signage before leaving the placement area unattended.
  3. Clean tools and equipment without discharging cement residue into soil, drains, or waterways. Wash out at the designated concrete washout location only.
  4. Record delivery data, test information, placement times, weather, volume, interruptions, corrections, and curing start time. Complete every field on the Footing Placement and Curing Record.
  5. Inspect the finished footing surfaces and protection before leaving the site. Confirm barricades, coverings, and curing materials are correctly placed before the crew departs.

Common Placement Inspection

Inspect every placement using the same checks regardless of footing length or configuration.

Complete the Footing Placement and Curing Record in the Inspection Checklist section below before releasing the crew from the site.

Skill Check

  1. Why must forms, reinforcement, and embedded-hardware inspections from Projects 02, 03, and 05 be complete before concrete discharge begins?
  2. What must the placing crew do before accepting a delivered load if the delivery ticket does not match the specified mixture?
  3. Why must a continuous workable front be maintained during placement, and what is the risk of allowing a cold joint to form?
  4. What conditions require the placing crew to stop discharge before continuing?
  5. Why must dowels and embedded items be rechecked before the concrete loses workability rather than after it hardens?
  6. What is the difference between striking off a footing top to a convenient elevation and striking off to the elevation verified in Project 01?
  7. Why must the surface finish match the condition required for the next construction stage rather than a generally smooth appearance?
  8. What determines when curing must begin, and what is the risk of delaying it past that point?
  9. What must the crew do if placement is interrupted before the footing is complete?
  10. Why must washout water and cement residue never be discharged into soil, drains, or waterways?

Performance Check

With placement, consolidation, strike-off, finishing, and curing start complete, review the finished Footing Placement and Curing Record against the Acceptance Standards table and confirm the delivered mixture matched the specification, required field tests were completed by approved personnel, no cold joint formed outside an approved construction-joint location, no visible honeycombing or entrapped air voids remain at forms or embedded items, the footing top elevation matches the approved plan within tolerance, every dowel and embedded item remains within tolerance, the surface finish matches the condition required for the next stage, and curing began at the correct time and is documented. If an item fails, identify whether the error occurred in delivery verification, placement rate, consolidation method, elevation control, or curing timing before recording the correction and re-running the affected check.

Project Closeout

You have completed the fourth project in the concrete and residential foundations sequence: pouring and finishing strip footings. This project required you to prepare for concrete delivery (FN-019), place concrete into the footing forms (FN-020), consolidate the concrete around reinforcement and embedded items (FN-021), screed the footing tops to the verified elevation (FN-022), finish the footing surfaces to the condition required for the next stage (FN-023), and protect the fresh concrete while beginning the specified curing procedure (FN-024).

You now have a placed, consolidated, finished, and protected strip footing with curing underway and fully documented. That footing carries directly into the next project: installing the anchor bolts and embedded hardware designated for this placement wherever that work was not completed as part of the current pour, and continuing the curing and protection procedure established here.

Maintain the barricades, curing coverings, and protection measures established in this project. Do not disturb, load, or remove protection from the footing until Project 09 authorizes it.
