Job Overview

This project qualifies you to prepare foundation walls and install the moisture-control system specified for each wall area. The finished work product is a continuous, compatible, inspected damp-proofing or waterproofing assembly: cleaned and repaired wall surfaces, primer and coating or membrane applied to the correct zones and thickness, reinforced corners and cracks, sealed penetrations, terminated top and bottom edges, and a completed product and inspection record with photographs taken before the work is concealed.

You will review the approved moisture-control design and groundwater conditions, confirm that curing, tie treatment, and defect repair have reached the required condition, establish damp-proofing and waterproofing zones and their transitions, apply primer and the specified coating or membrane system, reinforce corners and cracks, seal every penetration, inspect coverage and continuity, repair any defect found, and photograph the completed system before it is concealed by insulation, protection board, or backfill.

This project follows directly from Project 8, which stripped forms and repaired minor concrete defects, and Project 9, which established the curing and protection record this project depends on. Its output is required before Project 11 installs the foundation-drain system and Project 12 installs insulation and protection board over the completed moisture-control assembly.

Skills You Will Demonstrate

  • FN-055 — Clean wall surfaces in preparation for the specified moisture-control system.
  • FN-056 — Identify waterproofing zones and distinguish them from damp-proofing zones.
  • FN-057 — Apply damp-proofing coating to the designated wall areas at the required coverage.
  • FN-058 — Install waterproofing membrane or liquid-applied system in the designated zones.
  • FN-059 — Seal penetrations using compatible system components.
  • FN-060 — Inspect coating and membrane continuity and document the completed system.

Where This Skill Fits

Project 8 stripped the stem-wall forms and repaired minor concrete defects. Project 9 established the curing and early-age protection record that determines whether the concrete has reached the condition required for moisture-control work. This project converts a repaired, cured concrete wall into a continuous moisture-control assembly that the remaining below-grade projects in this book depend on directly: Project 11 cannot install the foundation-drain system, and Project 12 cannot install insulation and protection board, until this project's system has passed inspection and been photographed.

The zone-based discipline used in this chapter — treating damp-proofing and waterproofing as materially different systems rather than interchangeable coatings, and never claiming that one performs the other's function — is the same discipline applied again in the Chapter 20 capstone when the complete foundation moisture-control assembly is reviewed before backfill.

Scope and Intended Use

This project covers:

  • reviewing the approved moisture-control design, groundwater conditions, drainage plan, product system, substrate requirements, terminations, penetrations, transitions, and inspection hold points
  • confirming that concrete curing, form-tie treatment, defect repair, and surface preparation have reached the required condition
  • inspecting and repairing wall surfaces before coating or membrane application
  • establishing damp-proofing zones, waterproofing zones, transitions, and terminations
  • applying primer, damp-proofing coating, and waterproofing membrane or liquid-applied system according to the approved design and manufacturer instructions
  • reinforcing corners, cracks, joints, and changes in plane, and sealing penetrations
  • inspecting coverage, thickness, adhesion, laps, seams, and terminations, and repairing any defect found
  • photographing and documenting the completed system before concealment

This project does not authorize the learner to:

  • select a damp-proofing or waterproofing system on independent judgment; the approved plans and site conditions control which system each wall area receives
  • apply damp-proofing to an area the approved design designates for waterproofing, or claim that damp-proofing provides hydrostatic waterproofing performance
  • proceed with coating or membrane application before authorized substrate repairs have reached the condition required by the product
  • conceal the completed system with insulation, protection board, or backfill before it has passed inspection and been photographed
  • substitute an incompatible primer, accessory, or repair material for the one identified by the product manufacturer

Any substrate condition, coverage reading, seam, termination, or penetration seal that fails inspection must be corrected or escalated to a qualified professional before the system is concealed.

Reference Conventions

Establish these references before any preparation or application work begins, and do not change them mid-installation.

TermDefinition
Damp-proofing zoneAny wall area the approved design designates to receive a damp-proofing coating resisting soil moisture, not hydrostatic pressure
Waterproofing zoneAny wall area the approved design designates to receive a membrane or liquid-applied waterproofing system resisting hydrostatic pressure
TransitionThe defined boundary or detail where a damp-proofing zone meets a waterproofing zone, a top or bottom termination, a corner, or a penetration
Top terminationThe defined upper edge or detail where the moisture-control system ends at or above the specified finished-grade or flashing line
Bottom terminationThe defined lower edge or detail where the moisture-control system meets the footing or drain-system detail
Wet-film thicknessThe measured thickness of applied coating or membrane before cure, verified against the manufacturer-controlled coverage rate
HolidayA gap, pinhole, or uncoated area in an otherwise continuous coating or membrane, identified during inspection

Reference and System Record

Before applying any product, record the selected references and system directly on the Foundation Moisture-Control Installation Record:

Site name/address: ______     Damp-proofing product/batch: ______     Waterproofing product/batch: ______     Groundwater condition per design: ______

Date started: ____________     Applicator name: ____________

Prerequisites

Common Field Fundamentals

Every moisture-control installation in this book follows the same sequence: confirm the substrate has reached the required condition, identify which zone each wall area belongs to, prepare and protect adjacent work, apply primer and the specified system at the controlled coverage, reinforce and seal every transition and penetration, inspect for continuity, and record and photograph the completed assembly before it is concealed.

Damp-proofing zoneSoil-moisture resistance only; not rated for hydrostatic pressure
Waterproofing zoneMembrane or liquid-applied system rated for hydrostatic conditions per design
TransitionsCorners, top and bottom terminations, and zone boundaries requiring reinforcement or overlap
PenetrationsPipes, conduits, sleeves, and other openings sealed with compatible system components

Substrate Condition and Zone Identification

Do not begin coating or membrane application until the substrate has reached the condition required by the specified product, and do not apply a product to a wall area before confirming which zone that area belongs to. Applying the wrong system to a zone, or applying any system before the substrate is ready, produces a failure that cannot be corrected without removing and replacing the installed material.

E. Preparation — Document Review and Substrate Verification

  1. Review the approved moisture-control design, groundwater conditions, drainage plan, product system, substrate requirements, terminations, penetrations, transitions, and inspection hold points. Confirm the document set is complete before proceeding to Step 2.
  2. Confirm that concrete curing, form-tie treatment, defect repair, and surface preparation have reached the required condition. Verify against the Project 9 curing record and the Project 8 repair record before continuing.
  3. Inspect wall surfaces for fins, voids, cracks, tie holes, laitance, dirt, oil, release agent, moisture, frost, and incompatible repair materials. Record every condition found before continuing.

F. Substrate Repair and Protection

  1. Complete all authorized substrate repairs and allow them to reach the required condition. Use only repair materials compatible with the specified moisture-control system.
  2. Protect footing drains, openings, adjacent surfaces, hardware, and areas not receiving the product. Mask or cover every surface identified in the approved design as excluded from application.

G. Zone Identification

  1. Establish damp-proofing zones, waterproofing zones, transitions, top terminations, bottom terminations, corners, and penetrations. Mark every zone boundary on the wall before application begins.
  2. Verify product storage, temperature, shelf life, mixing, coverage, and application equipment. Confirm every product is within its manufacturer-stated limits before opening a container.

H. Application

  1. Apply required primer or conditioner to the prepared substrate. Apply only to the areas and at the coverage specified by the manufacturer.
  2. Apply the specified damp-proofing coating to designated walls at the manufacturer-controlled coverage or thickness. Verify coverage at multiple points as application proceeds.
  3. Install the specified waterproofing membrane or liquid-applied system in designated zones. Follow the manufacturer's application sequence and working-time limits.

I. Reinforcement and Penetration Sealing

  1. Reinforce corners, cracks, joints, changes in plane, and transitions using the approved accessories. Install reinforcing fabric or mesh per the product system before the base coat or membrane cures.
  2. Seal pipe, conduit, sleeve, tie-hole, and other penetrations using compatible system components. Verify no gap remains at any penetration boundary.
  3. Lap, roll, terminate, fasten, or tool membrane seams according to the product system. Set every seam with the specified seam roller or tool before it cures.
  4. Maintain continuity between footing, wall, sill, drain, flashing, and protection details. Confirm no gap exists at any transition between systems or building elements.

J. Inspection, Testing, and Documentation

  1. Inspect wet-film thickness, coverage, adhesion, laps, seams, terminations, and pinholes using the required method. Use the wet-film thickness gauge at the frequency specified by the manufacturer or approved design.
  2. Repair holidays, blisters, fishmouths, thin areas, tears, contamination, and damaged transitions. Use only manufacturer-approved repair procedures and compatible materials.
  3. Allow the system to cure or set for the specified period without rain, backfill, impact, or contamination. Barricade or protect the area for the full cure period.
  4. Conduct any required flood, adhesion, holiday, or visual testing without overstating what the test proves. Record the test method, duration, and result exactly as performed.
  5. Photograph the completed system before insulation or protection board conceals it. Photograph every zone boundary, termination, corner, and penetration seal.
  6. Complete the product, batch, weather, coverage, inspection, and repair record. Sign and date the completed Foundation Moisture-Control Installation Record.

Common Installation Inspection

Inspect every wall area using the same checks regardless of which zone, product, or detail it involves.

Wet-Film Thickness
The measured thickness of applied coating or membrane before cure, checked against the manufacturer's coverage rate.
Holiday
A gap, pinhole, or uncoated area in an otherwise continuous coating or membrane.
Penetration
Any pipe, conduit, sleeve, or opening passing through the moisture-control system that requires a compatible seal.

Concealment
The point at which insulation, protection board, or backfill covers the completed system and further inspection becomes impractical.

Skill Check

  1. Why must a wall area never receive a damp-proofing coating in place of the waterproofing system the approved design requires for that area?
  2. What must be confirmed about the substrate before primer or coating application begins, and what is the source of that requirement?
  3. How is wet-film thickness verified, and why is checking it during application more reliable than checking it only after the wall is finished?
  4. What is the required response when a holiday, pinhole, or thin area is found during inspection?
  5. Why must every penetration be sealed using components compatible with the surrounding system rather than a general-purpose sealant?
  6. What is required before the completed moisture-control system may be concealed by insulation, protection board, or backfill?
  7. What must the learner do if the system is disturbed by rain, backfill, impact, or foot traffic before the specified cure period ends?
  8. Why does a flood, adhesion, or holiday test require the applicator to avoid overstating what the test proves?
  9. What information must the Foundation Moisture-Control Installation Record contain before the wall is released for Project 11?
  10. Why must reinforcing fabric be embedded at corners, cracks, and changes in plane before the base coat or membrane cures?

Performance Check

With substrate preparation, zone identification, primer and coating or membrane application, reinforcement, penetration sealing, and inspection all completed and recorded, review the finished record against the Acceptance Standards table and confirm the substrate was ready before application, every wall area received the system designated by the approved design, coverage and thickness met the manufacturer-controlled value at every verified point, every corner, crack, seam, and penetration is continuous and defect-free, the specified cure period was completed without disturbance, and any required test was completed without overstating what it proves. Complete the Foundation Moisture-Control Installation Record and resolve any unresolved conflict before releasing the wall for Project 11. If an item fails, identify whether the error occurred in substrate preparation, zone identification, application, reinforcement, or inspection before recording the correction and re-running the affected check.

Project Closeout

You have completed the tenth project in the concrete and residential foundations sequence: waterproofing and damp-proofing foundation walls. This project required you to clean wall surfaces in preparation for the specified system (FN-055), identify waterproofing zones and distinguish them from damp-proofing zones (FN-056), apply damp-proofing coating to designated areas at the required coverage (FN-057), install waterproofing membrane or liquid-applied system in designated zones (FN-058), seal penetrations using compatible system components (FN-059), and inspect and document coating and membrane continuity (FN-060).

You now have a continuous, compatible, inspected, and photographed foundation moisture-control assembly. That completed system carries directly into the next project: installing the permanent foundation-drain system that works together with this moisture-control assembly to keep the foundation dry.

Protect the completed system from rain, backfill, impact, and contamination until Project 11's drain installation and Project 12's insulation and protection board are in place. Do not allow the wall to be backfilled until every project depending on this moisture-control assembly has passed inspection.
