Safety Cue
Task-specific safety guidance for ordinary work hazards.
Project 12
Install the specified exterior foundation insulation and protection layer without puncturing, bridging, blocking, or chemically damaging the waterproofing and drainage systems installed in Projects 10 and 11, and document a compatible, secured, inspected assembly ready for controlled backfill.
These cues appear at the point of work. They identify safety, code, manufacturer, and measurement issues before they become rework, damaged waterproofing, or a failed backfill inspection.

Serious injury, structural risk, or major damage is possible.
Practical work-area safety: excavation edges, cutting dust, and site traffic.
Local requirements vary. Verify permit, inspection, and jurisdictional rules.
Follow product-specific instructions for insulation, adhesive, and protection-board systems.
Reference-point, tolerance, and control-line guidance.
This project qualifies you to install the specified exterior foundation insulation and protection-board assembly over the completed waterproofing or damp-proofing system from Project 10 and the completed drain-tile system from Project 11, without puncturing, bridging, blocking, or chemically damaging either system. The finished work product is a continuous, compatible, secured, and inspected foundation insulation and protection assembly, photographed before backfill and released for Project 13.
You will confirm compatibility among the insulation, adhesive, fasteners, waterproofing, drain mat, and protection board; verify that waterproofing and drainage inspections are complete; repair any damage found in the wall system; lay out, cut, and dry-fit insulation panels; attach panels using an approved method that does not violate the waterproofing; install protection board and accessories; inspect the completed assembly; and release the wall for backfill only after the protection system passes inspection.
This project depends entirely on the work completed in Projects 10 and 11. Any wall area where waterproofing, damp-proofing, or drain-tile installation has not been inspected and released is not ready for this project, and insulation or protection board must not be installed over it.
Project 10 installed the moisture-control system and Project 11 installed the permanent drain-tile system that protects the foundation for the life of the building. This project adds the thermal and physical protection layer that must not compromise either system. Every panel cut, every fastener, and every accessory installed here is evaluated first against one question: does it puncture, bridge, block, or chemically damage the waterproofing or drainage work completed in the two prior projects?
The compatibility-first discipline used in this chapter — checking every material against the waterproofing and drainage systems before it touches the wall — is the same discipline applied again in Project 13, where backfill material and equipment must avoid damaging this exact assembly.
This project covers:
This project does not authorize the learner to:
Any incompatible material, unrepaired waterproofing damage, or blocked drainage path identified during this project must be corrected before the insulation and protection assembly is considered complete.
Establish these references before any layout or cutting begins, and do not change them mid-installation.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Insulation panel layout | The vertical and horizontal reference lines, joints, corners, penetrations, and terminations established before any panel is cut |
| Top termination | The specified detail where insulation and protection board end at the top of the wall, sill, or grade transition |
| Bottom termination | The specified detail where insulation and protection board end at the footing, drainage system, or specified depth |
| Protection board | The rigid or semi-rigid material installed over exposed waterproofing or insulation to resist backfill damage |
| Drainage mat | A specified accessory that maintains a drainage path against the wall, installed only where the approved detail requires it |
| Compatibility documentation | The manufacturer or product data confirming that the insulation, adhesive, fasteners, waterproofing, drain mat, protection board, and backfill material may be used together |
Before cutting or fitting any panel, record the selected references and confirmed compatibility directly on the Foundation Insulation and Protection Inspection Record:
Site name/address: ______ Insulation product and thickness: ______ Waterproofing system installed (Project 10): ______ Confirmed compatible (Y/N): ______
Date started: ____________ Installer name: ____________
Every installation in this project follows the same sequence: confirm compatibility and inspection status before touching the wall, repair any damage first, lay out panels from established references, dry-fit before attaching, attach without violating the waterproofing, install protection board and accessories, and inspect and document before backfill. Following that sequence in the same order every time prevents the most common failure in this project: attaching a panel before confirming what is underneath it is sound.
Do not install any insulation, adhesive, fastener, or protection board over a wall area until the compatibility documentation for that exact material combination has been confirmed and the waterproofing and drainage inspections for that area are complete. If a tear, puncture, contamination, or uncured area is found in the wall system during this project's inspection, repair it using the approved waterproofing system before insulation proceeds over that location.
Verify compatibility among the insulation, adhesive, fasteners, waterproofing, drain mat, protection board, and backfill material using the manufacturer documentation for the specific products installed in Projects 10 and 11. Do not assume compatibility based on a similar product used on a different job. An incompatible adhesive or solvent can soften, dissolve, or degrade the waterproofing membrane beneath it.
Treat every completed waterproofing surface and every drain-tile component as a stop-work zone for careless tool use. A dropped tool, a dragged panel edge, or an improperly supported ladder can puncture a membrane that passed inspection minutes earlier. Inspect the membrane immediately after any incident before continuing.
Follow the manufacturer's dust-control method for the specified insulation product when cutting, and wear the required respiratory protection. Confirm a stable working position at excavation edges before reaching to fit or fasten a panel near grade; do not lean over an unprotected excavation edge to complete a cut or attachment.
Insulation type, exposure limits above grade, fire-protection requirements, and termite-protection requirements vary by jurisdiction and by the approved design. Do not substitute an insulation product with a different fire rating, termite resistance, or exposure rating than the one specified in the approved documents. Verify jurisdictional requirements with the local building department before substitution.

Complete the Foundation Insulation and Protection Inspection Record in the Inspection Checklist section below before releasing the work for Project 13.
Probable cause: the adhesive or solvent used was not confirmed compatible with the specific waterproofing product installed in Project 10.
Confirmation: inspect the affected area for softening, discoloration, or loss of adhesion in the membrane, and check the adhesive's compatibility documentation against the installed waterproofing system.
Correction: stop work, remove the incompatible adhesive and any affected panel, obtain engineer or manufacturer direction on membrane repair, and repair the waterproofing using the approved system before reinstalling with a confirmed compatible adhesive.
Reinspection: repeat the substrate inspection and compatibility check for the repaired area before reattaching any panel.
Probable cause: a panel edge, corner, or fastening tool contacted the membrane with excessive force during dry-fitting or attachment.
Confirmation: inspect the membrane at the contact point for a visible puncture, tear, or thinned area.
Correction: repair the puncture using the approved waterproofing system before continuing insulation installation over that area.
Reinspection: repeat the substrate inspection for the repaired area and confirm cure time before reinstalling insulation.
Probable cause: protection-board panels were installed with an unintended gap at a joint, corner, or termination.
Confirmation: inspect the full protection-board coverage against the approved detail and identify every exposed area.
Correction: install additional protection board or a specified accessory to close the gap before backfill.
Reinspection: repeat the protection-board check for the full wall face.
Probable cause: a panel or drain mat was installed over a drain-tile outlet, cleanout, or drainage path without maintaining the required clearance.
Confirmation: compare the installed insulation and drainage-mat layout to the Project 11 drain-tile record and identify any conflict.
Correction: remove and reposition the conflicting material to restore the required drainage path and clearance.
Reinspection: repeat the access check for the affected drainage component.
Probable cause: insulation installation proceeded before the Project 10 waterproofing inspection for that specific wall area was complete.
Confirmation: compare the installed area to the Project 10 inspection record and identify any area lacking a release signature.
Correction: remove the insulation over the unreleased area, complete the required waterproofing inspection, and reinstall only after release.
Reinspection: repeat the substrate and attachment checks for the affected area.
Probable cause: the termination accessory was omitted, misaligned, or installed with an unsealed gap.
Confirmation: inspect the top termination against the approved detail for continuous coverage and seal condition.
Correction: install or reseat the specified termination bar or cap flashing and seal any remaining gap with a compatible sealant.
Reinspection: repeat the terminations and penetrations check for the affected area.
This project ends with a released, protected assembly ready for backfill, not a torn-down worksite.

With every panel installed, protection board completed, and terminations sealed, review the finished record against the Acceptance Standards table and confirm every material was confirmed compatible before installation, the substrate was free of damage or the damage was repaired before covering, every panel is fully attached without violating the waterproofing, protection board provides continuous coverage where specified, every termination and penetration is sealed, and every cleanout, drain, and outlet remains accessible. Complete the Foundation Insulation and Protection Inspection Record and resolve any unresolved conflict before releasing the wall for backfill. If an item fails, identify whether the error occurred in compatibility confirmation, substrate preparation, panel attachment, protection-board coverage, or termination sealing before recording the correction and re-running the affected check.
You have completed the twelfth project in the concrete and residential foundations sequence: installing foundation insulation and protection board. This project required you to select the specified insulation type (FN-067), cut insulation panels to fit corners, steps, and penetrations (FN-068), fasten panels without violating the waterproofing system (FN-069), install protection board over exposed waterproofing or insulation (FN-070), protect the waterproofing and drainage systems throughout installation (FN-071), and inspect and document the completed assembly (FN-072).
You now have a continuous, compatible, secured, and inspected foundation insulation and protection assembly. That documented assembly carries directly into the next project: backfilling around the foundation without damaging the wall, waterproofing, drainage, or protection systems you have just completed.
Protect the completed insulation and protection-board assembly from equipment contact and weather until backfill begins. Project 13 depends on every termination, seal, and protection-board area remaining intact and undamaged.
