Job Overview

This project qualifies you to build and raise one approved exterior wall section on the completed subfloor established in Project 05. The finished work product is a single stable exterior wall section, framed to the plan-specified length, height, stud spacing, and corner configuration, plumbed and squared, connected to the floor system, and temporarily braced against overturning until adjacent walls and permanent connectors are complete.

You will review the exterior wall plan and its load-bearing designation, select and prepare plate and stud material, lay out both plates together, assemble the plan-specified corner configuration and any intersecting-wall backing, build the wall flat on the subfloor, square it, raise it into position, and verify its dimensions, plumb, and connections before signing off the wall for the next stage of framing.

This project follows Project 06, where you framed a non-load-bearing interior partition. That project introduced plate layout, stud spacing, squaring, and raising on a wall with no structural load assigned to it. This project applies the same sequence to a wall that carries structural load, and introduces the corner assembly, hold-down framing, and connection requirements that a load-bearing exterior wall demands. The wall section completed here becomes the platform for the rough openings in Project 09, the structural headers in Project 10, and the coordinated raising, bracing, and sheathing work in Projects 11 and 12.

Skills You Will Demonstrate

  • FR-037 — Lay out exterior wall plates from the approved wall plan, marking stud, corner, intersection, opening, and hold-down locations on both top and bottom plates.
  • FR-038 — Select, prepare, and install studs to the specified wall height, spacing, and crown orientation.
  • FR-039 — Build the plan-specified corner configuration without substituting another corner type.
  • FR-040 — Install the bottom plate, top plate, and required second top plate in the approved sequence and fastening schedule.
  • FR-041 — Square, raise, plumb, and temporarily brace the assembled wall section, and align it with the established wall line.
  • FR-042 — Inspect the completed exterior wall assembly for length, height, stud spacing, corner geometry, plate alignment, plumb, straightness, and connection completeness.

Where This Skill Fits

The exterior wall section built here carries the structural load path established by the floor framing in Projects 02 through 05 up to the ceiling and roof framing built in Projects 13 through 16. A wall built off its layout line, framed with the wrong corner configuration, or raised without the specified hold-down studs, carries that error into the rough openings, headers, sheathing, and roof bearing that depend on it.

The corner configuration built in this project is compared against an alternate corner type and intersecting-wall backing in Project 08. The rough openings framed into a wall of this type are addressed in Project 09, and the structural headers that span those openings are addressed in Project 10. This project does not frame openings; it produces the plate layout and stud framework that Project 09 will modify.

Scope and Intended Use

This project covers:

  • reviewing the approved exterior wall plan, including load-bearing designation, wall height, stud size and spacing, corner type, and connection schedule
  • laying out and marking both plates from the approved reference end
  • preparing, crowning, and installing studs, corner assemblies, and intersecting-wall backing at their labeled locations
  • assembling, squaring, raising, plumbing, and temporarily bracing the completed wall section
  • aligning the wall with the established floor wall line and completing the approved foundation or floor connection
  • inspecting and recording wall dimensions, corner geometry, plumb, and connection completeness

This project does not authorize the learner to:

  • select stud size, spacing, corner type, or hold-down requirements without the approved exterior wall plan; these values must come from the plan, not from field judgment
  • frame or cut a door or window rough opening; rough openings are framed under the supplied opening schedule in Project 09
  • size or install a structural header; header sizing and installation are covered in Project 10
  • remove temporary bracing installed in this project before the permanent connections, adjacent walls, and sheathing required by later chapters are complete
  • substitute a corner configuration, stud grade, or connector type not shown on the approved plan

Any wall section whose plan-specified dimensions, load-bearing designation, or connection schedule cannot be confirmed on site must stop for direction from the responsible design professional before framing begins.

Reference Conventions

Establish these references before any layout begins, and do not change them once framing has started.

TermDefinition
Controlling wall endThe plan-identified end of the wall section from which all plate layout marks are measured and referenced
Reference faceThe exterior or interior face of the plate used consistently for every layout measurement on that wall
Common studA full-height stud placed at the regular plan-specified spacing along the wall
King studA full-height stud placed at the side of a rough opening, extending from bottom plate to top plate
Hold-down studA stud identified by the plan to receive a hold-down connector, requiring its own labeled location and connection detail
Second top plateThe additional top plate installed over the first top plate where the approved plan requires a doubled top plate for splice and lap continuity
Wall lineThe marked floor reference, established in Project 01 and referenced throughout this book, that defines the bottom-plate location of this wall

Wall Section Data Record

Before marking any plate, record the controlling wall data directly on the wall-framing record:

Wall identification / plan reference: ______     Load-bearing designation: ______     Overall wall length: ______     Wall height: ______

Stud size and species/grade: ______     Stud spacing: ______     Corner type specified: ______     Second top plate required (Y/N): ______

Prerequisites

Common Field Fundamentals

Every exterior wall section in this book, from this chapter's single wall through the raised and connected wall system in Project 11, follows the same build sequence: lay out both plates together, prepare and crown studs, assemble the wall flat, square it, raise it into position on its wall line, plumb and brace it, and verify the result against the plan. Learning that sequence on a single controlled wall section, before coordinating multiple walls, protects the corner and intersection work built in Project 08 and the raising sequence built in Project 11.

Plate layoutStuds, corners, intersections, and hold-downs marked on both plates together
Component preparationStuds cut to height, crowned, and oriented; corner assembly built
Flat assemblyWall built flat on the subfloor and squared before raising
Raise and secureWall lifted, aligned to its wall line, plumbed, and temporarily braced

Load-Bearing Designation and Corner Configuration

An exterior wall carries structural load from the floor, ceiling, or roof framing above it unless the approved plan specifically designates it otherwise. Confirm the load-bearing designation on the plan before framing, because it governs stud size, spacing, corner configuration, and connection requirements. The corner configuration specified for this wall — for example, a three-stud corner or a California corner — must be built exactly as shown on the plan; Project 08 compares corner types side by side, but this project builds only the type the plan specifies for this wall's actual corners.

C. Material Takeoff and Fastener/Hardware Schedule

Confirm the complete material takeoff — plate and stud stock lengths and quantities, corner and backing component quantities, hold-down and strap hardware, and fastener types, sizes, and quantities per joint — against the approved exterior wall plan and connection schedule before cutting any material. Do not substitute a fastener, connector, or hardware item not listed on the approved schedule. Record the confirmed takeoff on the wall-framing record before staging material.

D. Acceptance Standards

CheckStandard
Wall length and heightWithin the tolerance stated on the approved plan; if no project-specific tolerance is stated, obtain it from the design professional before proceeding
Stud spacingMatches the approved plan spacing at every location, including corners, intersections, and hold-down studs
Corner geometryMatches the plan-specified corner type exactly; no substitution of corner configuration
Diagonal comparison (flat assembly)The two diagonals of the assembled wall differ by no more than the tolerance stated on the approved plan or design professional's direction
Plumb after raisingWithin the tolerance stated on the approved plan at the ends, openings, and specified intervals
Bottom-plate alignmentBottom plate matches the established wall line for its full length
Connection completenessEvery hold-down, strap, and foundation or floor connection specified on the connection schedule is installed and seated per manufacturer instructions

E. Document Review and Preparation (Steps 1–5)

  1. Review the exterior wall plan, load-bearing designation, wall height, stud size and spacing, openings, corners, sheathing, hold-downs, and connection schedule. Confirm the revision date against the project's document-control log and record it on the wall-framing record.
  2. Verify the subfloor, wall lines, edge protection, material staging, and raising area. Confirm the subfloor has passed the inspection required in Project 05 and that the wall line for this section is marked and legible.
  3. Identify the controlling wall end and direction of layout. Mark the controlling end on the plan copy used for field reference.
  4. Select plate and stud material matching the approved grade, species or category, treatment, and moisture requirements. Reject stock that does not match the specification or shows defects prohibited by the project specification.
  5. Align the top and bottom plates and mark reference ends. Place both plates together with their reference ends flush before any layout mark is made.

F. Plate Layout and Stud Preparation (Steps 6–9)

  1. Lay out end studs, common studs, corners, intersecting walls, openings, hold-down studs, and concentrated-load locations. Mark every location on both plates in the same pass using the approved spacing.
  2. Transfer layout marks across both plates and label each location. Label each mark with its component type (common stud, king stud, corner, hold-down) as shown on the plan.
  3. Measure and prepare studs to the specified wall height. Cut every stud square from a consistent reference end at the height confirmed in Step 1.
  4. Crown and orient solid-sawn studs consistently. Sight each stud, mark the crown, and orient all crowns in the same direction per the project specification.

G. Corner, Backing, and Wall Assembly (Steps 10–15)

  1. Assemble the approved corner configuration without substituting another corner type. Build the corner exactly as detailed on the plan; do not select a different corner type for convenience.
  2. Assemble intersecting-wall backing or ladder backing where shown. Build backing components per the plan detail before installing them in the wall assembly.
  3. Place common studs and special studs at their labeled locations. Position every stud at its marked location with crowns oriented per Step 9.
  4. Install the bottom plate, top plate, and required second top plate in the approved sequence. Install the second top plate only after the wall is raised and aligned, unless the approved sequence specifies otherwise.
  5. Install straps, hold-down studs, post assemblies, or connector framing that must be built into the wall. Position and label each per the connection schedule before fastening.
  6. Fasten joints according to the approved wall schedule. Use the fastener type, size, and pattern confirmed in Section C for every joint.

H. Squaring and Raising (Steps 16–22)

  1. Verify that studs remain on layout and faces remain flush. Check every stud location against the plate layout marks before squaring.
  2. Measure diagonals and square the wall section. Adjust the assembly until both diagonals match within the tolerance confirmed in Section D.
  3. Install temporary restraint to preserve square during raising. Fasten a diagonal brace across the flat assembly before lifting.
  4. Plan the wall lift, worker positions, equipment, and temporary bracing. Confirm the required worker count, lifting method, and bracing materials are staged before raising begins.
  5. Raise the wall and secure it immediately against overturning. Lift the wall using the planned method and install temporary restraint before releasing the lift.
  6. Align the bottom plate with the wall line and install approved foundation or floor connections. Confirm the bottom plate matches the wall line for its full length before fastening.
  7. Plumb the wall and install temporary braces. Plumb at the ends, openings, and specified intervals, and install braces sufficient to hold the wall stable until permanent connections are complete.

I. Verification and Documentation (Steps 23–25)

  1. Verify wall length, height, stud spacing, corner geometry, plate alignment, plumb, straightness, and connection completeness. Check every item against the Acceptance Standards table.
  2. Correct authorized deficiencies before adjacent walls or sheathing are installed. Re-verify any corrected item before proceeding.
  3. Record wall identification, dimensions, connectors, temporary bracing, and inspection results. Complete the wall-framing record before releasing the wall for the next project.

Common Verification Inspection

Inspect the completed wall section using the same checks regardless of wall length or corner type.

Skill Check

  1. Why must the top and bottom plates be marked together rather than marked separately and transferred?
  2. What must the learner confirm about a wall's load-bearing designation before selecting stud size and spacing?
  3. Why must the plan-specified corner configuration be built exactly, rather than substituted with a different corner type the learner considers equivalent?
  4. What must be true of the flat wall assembly's diagonals before the wall is raised?
  5. What must happen immediately after a wall section is raised, before workers release it?
  6. What must the learner verify about the bottom plate before completing the foundation or floor connection?
  7. Why must a generic fastener never be substituted for a listed hold-down or connector fastener?
  8. What conditions require the learner to stop work and obtain direction before continuing wall assembly or raising?
  9. What must be true of temporary bracing before it may be modified or removed?
  10. Why does this project not authorize framing a door or window rough opening?

Performance Check

With plate layout, stud preparation, corner and backing assembly, squaring, raising, plumbing, bracing, and connection installation complete, review the finished wall section against the Acceptance Standards table and confirm wall length and height are within the approved plan tolerance, stud spacing and corner geometry match the plan exactly, the bottom plate aligns with the established wall line for its full length, the wall is plumb at the required locations, every hold-down and connector matches the connection schedule, and temporary bracing is installed and stable. Complete and sign the wall-framing record before adjacent wall sections or sheathing proceed. If a discrepancy remains open, identify the responsible authority and required decision before proceeding.

Project Closeout

You have completed the seventh project in the residential framing sequence: framing an exterior wall section. This project required you to lay out exterior wall plates from the approved plan (FR-037), select, prepare, and install studs to the specified height, spacing, and crown orientation (FR-038), build the plan-specified corner configuration without substitution (FR-039), install the bottom plate, top plate, and second top plate in the approved sequence (FR-040), square, raise, plumb, and temporarily brace the wall section (FR-041), and inspect the completed assembly for length, height, spacing, corner geometry, plumb, and connection completeness (FR-042).

You now have a stable, plumb, connected exterior wall section, temporarily braced and aligned with the established wall line. That wall section carries directly into the next project: building and comparing three-stud and California corner assemblies and intersecting-wall backing, and installing the designated configuration in the framing project.

Protect the temporary bracing installed on this wall section. Do not modify or remove it until the permanent connections, adjacent walls, and sheathing required by later chapters are complete.
