Job Overview

This chapter is the cumulative capstone for Book 5. The finished work product is a complete, inspected asphalt-shingle roofing and drainage system installed on the framed and roof-sheathed 8-foot by 10-foot shed structure completed in Book 4, or an approved equivalent practice structure built to the same approved project specification.

You will carry forward every competency taught in Chapters 1 through 19: deck inspection and readiness, roof access and fall protection, edge metal, self-adhered membrane, synthetic underlayment, layout, starter strips, field shingles, valley construction where the structure includes a valley, sidewall and headwall flashing where the structure includes those conditions, penetration flashing, ridge-cap shingles, ridge-vent installation, fascia and soffit ventilation, and gutters and downspouts. You will assemble those systems in the actual water-shedding and manufacturer-controlled construction sequence rather than in chapter-number order, complete a full closeout inspection, and issue a formal handoff to the building-envelope work that follows in Book 6.

This is the last chapter in the book. It does not introduce new material systems; it integrates the systems already taught into one complete, inspected roof.

Skills You Will Demonstrate

  • RF-115 — Integrate deck inspection, edge metal, and self-adhered membrane and underlayment installation into one coordinated capstone sequence.
  • RF-116 — Install starter strips and asphalt-shingle field courses on the capstone roof planes using the approved layout, exposure, and fastening schedule.
  • RF-117 — Integrate required flashing — valley, sidewall, headwall, or penetration — with the shingle field as each condition is encountered on the capstone structure.
  • RF-118 — Install a ridge-vent system and compatible ridge-cap shingles and verify the intake-to-exhaust attic airflow path.
  • RF-119 — Install gutters, downspouts, and an approved discharge extension on the designated capstone eaves.
  • RF-120 — Conduct a full capstone inspection, correct every failed or incomplete item, and complete the project documentation and handoff to Book 6.

Where This Skill Fits

Every chapter in this book fed into this one. Chapter 1 established the deck-readiness discipline used again here. Chapter 2 established the access and fall-protection plan every capstone step depends on. Chapters 3 through 6 established the edge-metal, membrane, underlayment, and layout sequence. Chapters 7 through 9 established starter strips, field shingles, and valley construction. Chapters 10 through 12 established sidewall, headwall, apron, and penetration flashing. Chapters 13 and 14 established ridge-cap and ridge-vent work. Chapter 15 established fascia, soffit, and edge ventilation. Chapter 16 established gutters and downspouts. Chapters 17 through 19 established repair, diagnosis, and deck-replacement skills that inform the correction step of this capstone.

This chapter does not reopen those skills individually. It requires you to sequence and integrate them correctly on one real structure, and it hands the completed, weather-protected shed off to Book 6, which begins the building-envelope work — siding, trim, and related wall systems — on the same structure.

Scope and Intended Use

This chapter covers:

  • confirming that the Book 4 shed structure is complete, stable, square, braced, sheathed, and released for roofing work
  • establishing the complete roof-access, fall-protection, material-staging, dropped-object-control, weather-monitoring, and rescue plan for the capstone roof
  • inspecting the deck and correcting only authorized minor deficiencies, escalating anything structural or moisture-related
  • preparing a complete material takeoff, bundle-distribution plan, flashing schedule, fastener schedule, and work sequence before materials are installed
  • installing fascia, soffit, and intake ventilation where those components must precede edge metal
  • installing eave drip edge, self-adhered membrane, synthetic underlayment, and rake drip edge in the required water-shedding order
  • establishing shingle layout controls, installing starter strips, and installing the asphalt-shingle field on both roof planes
  • integrating penetration flashing and any sidewall, headwall, or valley flashing that the approved capstone design actually contains
  • cutting the ridge-vent slot, installing the ridge vent, and installing ridge-cap shingles over it
  • installing gutters, downspouts, and approved discharge extensions
  • conducting the full closeout inspection, completing documentation, and handing the structure off to Book 6

This chapter does not authorize the learner to:

  • rebuild the roof frame or roof deck completed in Book 4, except for authorized corrections identified during the readiness inspection in Step 4 of the required sequence
  • invent a valley, sidewall, headwall, or penetration condition that is not part of the approved capstone structure; install only the flashing types the actual structure requires
  • substitute a hose test or visual check for proof of whole-building watertightness; the closeout inspection uses only the approved local water-flow observation methods established in earlier chapters
  • begin building-envelope work — siding, trim, or wall-cladding systems — covered in Book 6, except where this chapter's handoff explicitly identifies exposed interfaces that must be protected until that work begins

Any deficiency identified during the closeout inspection must be corrected under the authority that governs it — the relevant chapter procedure for a roofing defect, or an escalation to a structural or environmental authority for framing, decay, or hazardous-material findings — before the handoff is issued.

Reference Conventions

Establish these references before beginning the capstone sequence, and use them consistently across the material takeoff, flashing schedule, and closeout inspection.

TermDefinition
Capstone structureThe framed and roof-sheathed 8-foot by 10-foot shed completed in Book 4, or an inspected equivalent built to the same approved project specification
Water-shedding sequenceThe actual order in which roofing layers must be installed so each upper layer sheds onto the layer below it, regardless of chapter numbering
Readiness inspectionThe Chapter 1 deck-inspection procedure, repeated here against the capstone structure before any roofing material is installed
Flashing scheduleThe document identifying every valley, sidewall, headwall, apron, and penetration flashing condition actually present on the capstone structure, with product, dimensions, and integration sequence for each
Handoff recordThe formal document transferring the completed roofing system and any remaining building-envelope interfaces to Book 6

Capstone Project and Closeout Record

Before beginning the capstone sequence, record the controlling documents and structure identification directly on the capstone documentation set:

Project / structure ID: ______     Capstone roof plan revision: ______     Book 4 structural release reference: ______

Date started: ____________     Crew / inspector name(s): ____________

Prerequisites

Common Field Fundamentals

The capstone does not introduce new roofing theory. It requires you to hold the entire book's sequence in view at once: deck readiness and access first, then edge metal and water-control base layers in their required order, then layout and shingle installation, then flashing integrated course-by-course rather than added afterward, then ridge ventilation and cap shingles, then fascia, soffit, and gutters, and finally a closeout inspection that checks every one of those systems together rather than one at a time.

Readiness & accessRepeat Chapter 1 inspection and Chapter 2 fall-protection setup on the capstone structure
Base water-control layersEave metal, membrane, underlayment, rake metal in required order (Chapters 3–5)
Layout & field shinglesChapter 6 layout, Chapter 7 starter, Chapter 8 field course installation
Integrated flashingValley, sidewall, headwall, apron, and penetration flashing installed with the surrounding courses (Chapters 9–12)
Ridge & ventilationRidge-vent slot and vent before cap shingles (Chapters 13–14)
Edges & drainageFascia, soffit, intake ventilation, gutters, and downspouts (Chapters 15–16)
Correction authorityUse Chapters 17–19 procedures for any repair, diagnosis, or deck correction found during closeout
Closeout & handoffFull inspection, documentation, and formal transfer to Book 6

Coordinating the Actual Construction Sequence

Fascia, soffit, ventilation, edge metal, roof covering, and gutters must be coordinated according to the approved assembly rather than installed blindly in chapter-number order. Where the approved system requires underlayment over eave drip edge and beneath rake drip edge, install eave metal before the underlayment course and rake metal immediately after it. Integrate valley, step, headwall, and penetration flashings while the surrounding shingles are installed; do not insert them after the shingle field is complete. Install the ridge vent before the ridge-cap shingles that cover it.

D. Required Project Sequence

  1. Obtain the approved capstone roof plan, roof slope, deck specification, roofing-system instructions, ventilation design, edge details, penetration details, gutter plan, permit requirements, and inspection criteria. Confirm the revision or date on each document and record the confirmation on the governing-documents table above.
  2. Confirm that the Book 4 structure is complete, stable, square, braced, sheathed, and released for roofing work. Locate the signed Book 4 structural release. If it cannot be located or shows an open item, stop this chapter and route the structure back to the responsible authority before continuing.
  3. Establish the complete roof-access, fall-protection, material-staging, dropped-object-control, weather-monitoring, and rescue plan. Apply the full Chapter 2 procedure to the capstone structure and record the completed daily roof-safety readiness record before any roof-surface step begins.
  4. Inspect the deck from attic, ground, edge, and approved roof positions. Apply the full Chapter 1 procedure to the capstone structure and produce a deficiency list using the same format.
  5. Correct authorized raised fasteners, debris, minor gaps, and surface defects; escalate structural or moisture damage. Complete only corrections authorized under Chapter 1's scope; route anything beyond that scope to Chapter 19 or the applicable structural or environmental authority before proceeding.
  6. Verify roof slope, eave and rake dimensions, ridge condition, fascia, soffit, ventilation openings, and planned penetrations. Compare each measured value to the approved capstone roof plan and record any deviation as a deficiency requiring resolution before the affected system is installed.
  7. Prepare the complete material takeoff, bundle distribution plan, flashing schedule, fastener schedule, and work sequence. Identify every valley, sidewall, headwall, apron, and penetration condition actually present on the capstone structure and assign each to its governing chapter procedure before ordering or staging materials.
  8. Install or verify fascia, soffit, intake ventilation, and other edge components that must precede edge metal. Apply the Chapter 15 procedure and acceptance standards where the capstone design requires new or corrected fascia, soffit, or intake ventilation.
  9. Install eave drip edge according to the approved roof system. Apply the Chapter 3 procedure, positioning eave metal below the underlayment where the approved system requires that relationship.
  10. Install required self-adhered membrane at eaves, penetrations, and other designated vulnerable areas. Apply the Chapter 4 procedure and confirm coverage against the approved climate and product requirements.
  11. Install synthetic underlayment from low point to high point with required laps and fastening. Apply the Chapter 5 procedure, maintaining shingle-lap water flow from deck to discharge.
  12. Install rake drip edge in the required relationship to the underlayment. Complete the Chapter 3 rake-metal installation immediately after the applicable underlayment course, as required by the System-Sequence Control governing this book.
  13. Establish horizontal and vertical shingle layout controls. Apply the Chapter 6 procedure to both roof planes of the capstone structure, verifying symmetry and avoiding narrow final courses.
  14. Install starter strips along required eaves and rakes. Apply the Chapter 7 procedure and confirm joint offset from the first field-shingle course.
  15. Install asphalt-shingle field courses on both roof planes with approved exposure, offset, fastening, edge cuts, and bundle blending. Apply the Chapter 8 procedure, checking alignment against the layout grid at regular intervals.
  16. Integrate one approved plumbing-vent or training penetration flashing when included in the capstone design. Apply the Chapter 12 procedure while the surrounding shingle courses are installed, not after the field is complete.
  17. Install any applicable sidewall, headwall, valley, or other flashing only where the approved capstone structure contains that condition. Apply the governing Chapter 9, 10, or 11 procedure for each condition actually present, integrated course-by-course with the surrounding shingles.
  18. Cut the approved ridge-vent slot without damaging framing. Apply the Chapter 14 procedure, stopping work immediately if the proposed slot would cut trusses, rafters, ridge beams, connectors, wiring, or other structural or service components.
  19. Install the ridge vent and verify the intake-to-exhaust airflow path. Apply the Chapter 14 procedure and confirm that intake vents, baffles, and rafter channels remain unobstructed.
  20. Install compatible ridge-cap shingles over the vent using the required fastening method. Apply the Chapter 13 procedure, confirming the ridge vent is fully installed before capping begins.
  21. Install gutters, outlets, downspouts, and approved discharge extensions on designated eaves. Apply the Chapter 16 procedure, establishing slope from measured high- and low-point references and confirming the discharge route will not create foundation saturation, erosion, icing, or hazards.
  22. Clean roof planes, gutters, attic, work zones, and surrounding property of nails, cutoffs, packaging, and debris. Complete this cleanup before beginning the closeout inspection so debris does not obscure inspection findings.
  23. Inspect deck preparation records, edge metal, membranes, underlayment, layout, starter strips, field shingles, flashings, ridge vent, cap shingles, fascia, soffit, gutters, downspouts, and discharge. Use the Capstone Inspection Checklist below and the acceptance standards from each governing chapter.
  24. Correct every failed or incomplete item within the authorized scope. Route any item beyond this chapter's authorized scope to the applicable chapter procedure or outside authority, and record the referral.
  25. Conduct approved local water-flow observations at gutters, downspouts, flashings, and transitions without overstating the results. Apply the governing chapter's test procedure for each system and record the observed result; do not represent these observations as proof of whole-building watertightness.
  26. Complete the competency assessment, daily safety records, product records, photographs, concealed-work records, inspection documents, and punch list. Assemble the full capstone documentation set referenced throughout this chapter.
  27. Protect unfinished building-envelope interfaces for transfer to Book 6. Identify and weather-protect any wall, trim, or siding interface left incomplete by this book's scope.
  28. Conduct a formal handoff identifying completed roofing, remaining wall-envelope work, maintenance requirements, product limitations, and warranty documentation. Sign and date the handoff record before releasing the structure to Book 6 work.

Failure Points and Troubleshooting

Cleanup

This chapter ends with a signed handoff record and an organized project file, not a pile of loose bundles and cutoffs.

Skill Check

  1. Why must the Book 4 structural release be confirmed before any capstone roofing load is staged?
  2. In what order must eave metal, self-adhered membrane, synthetic underlayment, and rake metal be installed, and why does that order matter?
  3. Why must valley, sidewall, headwall, and penetration flashing be integrated while the surrounding shingle courses are installed rather than afterward?
  4. What must be verified before ridge-cap shingles are installed over a ridge-vent slot?
  5. What is the purpose of the flashing schedule prepared in Step 7, and what happens if a flashing condition is discovered after that step is skipped?
  6. What must a learner do upon finding a deck deficiency during the capstone readiness inspection that exceeds this chapter's authorized correction scope?
  7. Why does the closeout inspection check every roofing system together rather than one chapter's system at a time?
  8. What must the handoff record identify before the structure is released to Book 6?
  9. Why is a local water-flow observation not the same as proof of whole-building watertightness?
  10. What five pieces of information does the closeout deficiency list require for each finding, and where was that format first established in this book?

Performance Check

With the capstone roof complete, review the Capstone Roof Closeout Record against the Acceptance Standards table and confirm every governing chapter's system has been installed in the required water-shedding order, every flashing condition actually present on the structure has been integrated course-by-course, the ridge vent was installed and verified before the ridge-cap shingles were placed over it, gutters and downspouts have passed the required water-flow test, every deficiency has a recorded location, condition, correction, responsible authority, and reinspection method, and all authorized corrections have been completed and rechecked. Issue and sign the capstone readiness decision and the handoff record before releasing the structure to Book 6.

Chapter Closeout

You have completed the capstone project for Book 5: a full asphalt-shingle roofing and drainage system installed on the framed and roof-sheathed shed structure carried forward from Book 4. This chapter required you to integrate deck inspection, edge metal, membrane, and underlayment (RF-115), install starter strips and field shingles (RF-116), integrate every flashing condition present on the structure (RF-117), install the ridge-vent system and ridge-cap shingles (RF-118), install gutters and downspouts (RF-119), and conduct the full closeout inspection, correction, and handoff (RF-120).

You now have a complete, documented, weather-protected small roof system with a signed handoff record. That record carries directly into Book 6, which begins the building-envelope work — siding, trim, and related wall systems — on the same structure, using the roofing, drainage, and ventilation systems you installed and inspected in this chapter as its starting condition.

Store the completed capstone documentation set — deficiency list, competency rubric, safety records, photographs, and handoff record — with the project record. Book 6 requires this record before beginning building-envelope work.
